This one is tough for me because the proprietor that I met was a lovely nice person. I got there too early before they opened because yelp advertises they open at 11am when they don't open until noon. Nonetheless, she allowed me to enter and purchase 6 cupcakes. Now for the tough part, they are quite small and pricey. I can't apeak for the cakes; but the cupcakes are no better than any local baker's. Regretfully, it just was not worth the price nor the gas. read more

They used to be solid but the last 3 time I ordered their cake I get pieces of plastic in my cake. I even called about a year ago and they were very indifferent about it. I'm never gonna order here again. Such a shame. read more

Yes, as seen on TV--this woman's story is truly triumphant. She's a living legend, and if you're lucky enough to stop by her shop or catch her at the farmers market, you might even get to see her in person! The warmth of her and her team really shines through, and their recipes are absolutely fantastic. The food is top-quality and truly puts Teaneck, New Jersey, on the map! It's also worth noting that their treats ship beautifully, making them a perfect option for unique holiday gifts. They also handle corporate and book orders--and yes, everything is kosher! The story behind this place is a satisfactory one and a story of achieving something great through adversity... However, this happened over a decade ago and unfortunately, from my first impression of this place, there is seriously some need for marketing and a change tailored to incentivizing a newer generation of people to discovering this place. I was dissatisfied with the lack of desire to accept any of the coupons or online promotions offered by sites such as groupon and restaurant.com... The owner claimed that she had not been involved with the marketing departments from these sites, however, that is the only reason I discovered this place in the first place, and she refused to honor the coupons that we had purchased with our own money through the site. I wound up purchasing one of her famous apple cakes, which, in my opinion was extremely overpriced for the size, but I was sympathetic to her story and the hard work that went behind the business enough to purchase it. The cake was delicious, but not something groundbreaking. I know this is a brutal review, but I think it's important that the business makes some attempt going forward to clarify marketing directives and try to appeal to a newer audience instead of living within the same time period and not changing with the times. The owner is living over and over again what happened over 10 years ago and I'm looking for more creativity and expansion and collaboration from third party affiliates otherwise I see the business struggling due to lack of outside promotion and internal customer satisfaction initiatives. read more

My taste buds were calling out to me for cupcakes. So, I was looking for a shoppe that would satisfy this craving. While heading for the Provident Bank, I saw Mortgage Apple Cake sign. So, I decided to go in. Angela was gracious and the cupcakes looked absolutely divine. I chose the carrot cake cupcake and coconut. Well, it was like my taste buds were jumping for joy!! These cupcakes are to die for. Mouth-watering and absolutely delicious. You have GOT to try these cupcakes. The oatmeal raisin cookies are fabulous, too! Cakes were delicious!! I wanted to try a variety to I ordered 2 small cakes - original and rum, along with an assortment of cupcakes. I brought them to a friend's house for a get together and we all loved them!! My personal favorites are the original and vanilla cupcake with vanilla icing! So good. Picked up an apple cake (looks exactly like a carrot cake) . Also grabbed a gorgeous looking rum cake (slightly over cooked and half price) to pop into freezer for holiday whenever. Ordered a slice of the original mortgage Apple cake and a slide of the Apple pound cake through grub hub. Delicious, moist, and a very large portion for the reasonable Price of $5 a slice. This is a hidden gem spot , I'm surprised this place wasn't on yelp . The owner was very nice , pleasant and was very professional talking about her business and how it saved her house and how they is also a movie out as well . My husband and I tryed a variety of different cupcakes and different types of cakes it's all very delicious and we loved in how there wasnt any artificial flavors it was all natural ingredients. I recently bought an apple cake from Angela and WOW!!!! This cake is moist, fresh and full of apples. Now, the cream cheese icing is the best cream cheese frosting I have ever tasted (and I have tasted a lot!) Thankfully, I have an appointment in that area once a month so I get to stop there on my way home! The cherry on top was meeting Angela. She was so sweet and patient as I asked a few questions. I walked out with a whole cake (this was not ordered but already made) and a few cupcakes. The chocolate overload cupcake was also fresh and delicious. Stopped in this place after hearing Angela's story. I was lucky enough to meet her the day I stopped in. I bought the famous apple cake but in a cupcake form and it was perfectly moist, I felt like I was eating something straight out of the oven. There is no artificial after taste what so ever. The apple cake is moist with just the right amount of frosting and not overtly sweet. I hate when all you taste is sugar, this is nothing like it. I already knew the story, but to watch it and see the story come to life really touched my heart because she never gave up and she stays humble, which is something many lack. I love this bakery and Angela. I'm definitely a regular here and for good reason. The apple cake is absolutely divine and the service is amazing. Angela and her family will make you feel at home at this bakery and keep you coming back. I've ordered individual cake slices, small cakes, and big cakes. Purchased an 8 inch cake for a birthday and it was a nice experience at the shop. The shop space was small but the staff made the place very warm and welcoming. They would usually decorate the cake for special occasions, but unfortunately Angela was out at that time. Found the cake to be too sweet for personal preference though. On the upside, the icing is to die for and the apple flavor definitely comes through. Texture was very similar to a good carrot cake expect I think using apple instead of carrot make cake retain even more moisture. A bit too sweet to have on routine basis but will definitely consider getting this again for holiday gatherings and special occasions since it's more unique. read more

Wow i think i died and went to heaven because these cupcakes and cakes are too good to be real. I have been to many a bakeries in my day, my sweet tooth is actually bigger than my head. I live for dessert and Angela's bakery is truly a g"d-sent. My dentist will not be happy that i found this place. Easily can say that this is one of the best bakeries i have ever ordered from. Chocolate cake is not my favorite. As a matter of fact I usually only eat it if I have vanilla ice cream to go along. It is a small space, but makes you feel at home as soon as you step in. They have a limited but tasty selection of baked goods for walk-in customers. We tried the famous mortgage cake and were not disappointed. The cake was fresh, soft and you could taste the apple bits in it along with a hint of cinnamon. The butter cream frosting on the cake was also delicious, and perfect for this cake. One slice cost around $4. And I can only imagine how delicious their custom made-to-order cakes must be! It is strictly a bakery so they don't offer any specialty coffee/tea but just good ole hot coffee and water. read more

Five years ago, Angela Logan was faced with foreclosure. She set a goal to sell 100 apple cakes in 10 days and asked her friends to buy them. vVhen her story became national news, orders for her apple cakes came from all over the United States, saving her homefromforeclosure. Today, Angela heads her own company, Mortgage Apple Cakes, LLC.

Meet the Business Owner: Angela L.

In 2009, I was losing my home to foreclosure. I set a goal to sell 100 Apple Cakes in 10 days to qualify for a loan modification. When I got to 42 cakes, my friends told a reporter and when the story was published, it went viral. From the news coverage I sold over 900 cakes coast to coast. I partnered with a cake distributor and everybody that paid for a cake, got a cake. When that partnership ended, I continued to sell my cakes in farmers markets and street fairs because everyone loved the cake so much. In 2014 there was a movie made about my story called "Apple Mortgage Cake" starring Kimberly Elise on the UP network. In 2015, I opened the first Mortgage Apple Cake Bakery & Cafe in Teaneck, NJ. Once upon a time, their coffee was delicious, with rich, chocolatey notes, but the last few visits left me with bitter, almost burnt-tasting drinks, and no amount of milk could fix it. This was surprising, since they supposedly use LavAzza beans. I also never loved their cakes; I often found them too heavy on icing and light on actual cake. However, on a recent trip while shopping at 99 Ranch Market (which is conveniently right next door), we decided to give Paris Baguette another try and treat ourselves to pastries. I was immediately impressed by their selection and how frequently the display was refilled. Every item was behind a glass case, which felt very clean and hygienic. The cashiers were great at making the hot beverages, and they asked if we had a rewards program with them. We gave them our phone numbers, and it turned out none of us had signed up or that they expired. Here's what we purchased: - Cafe Mocha - 5/5 stars. Perfect balance of espresso and chocolate. The barista even made a heart on top. Although the lid covered it, the gesture was appreciated. - Cold Brew - 5/5 stars. Smooth and refreshing. - Chausson aux Pommes - 4/5 stars. A French apple turnover with a perfectly crisp crust and tender, flavorful apples that weren't mushy. - Croissant Donut - 5/5 stars. Flaky, buttery croissant-like in shape of a donut, filled with custard that was bright due to the citrus, and well-balanced between sweet and savory. - Blueberry & Cream Brioche - 5/5 stars. Then a woman from a U-Haul vehicle yelled that they were not open and said that, because they are kosher, they could not sell anything until 1:00 p.m. I completely understand that businesses may have religious observances or adjusted hours, but those hours should be clearly posted online and on the door. After making two trips and receiving conflicting information, I was extremely frustrated. Unfortunately, I will not be trying to visit this location again.

I drove home, opened the box. there was one apple turnover, two Boston cream, and two crullers NOT French crullers! I now understood why the bill was so high. So now I drove back in the car to the bakery to return the wrong order. Once I got back to the bakery, I spoke to the gentleman who filled my order and he proceeded to argue with me that in his defense, he gave me two plain crullers and that they did not have plain French crullers only vanilla or chocolate topped ones. Obviously, since they were both technically Crullers, I was at fault. He had no explanation for the Boston creams. I never ordered. After a brief argument, he gave me my correct order and a refund for the excessive amount of pastries he charged me for. I have ordered French Cruellers for years at this bakery I usually bought chocolate or vanilla coated, but today my wife's asked me to see if they had plain ones, this is the first time I ever received pastries I never asked for. My advice to this bakery is to only put people dealing with the public who can understand English as their second language.

I met with owner 2 months prior to the event, and provided the attached photo. The owner quoted me a price, and stated she could accomplish this cake, using air brush paint, and stated that she could put a special message, on edible paper inside of the cake, for the reveal. All of this sounded amazing, so with no hesitation, I left a deposit, and started planning. The cake was paid in full, 3 weeks before the event, which I regret, because she failed to produce, and she's now refusing to reimburse me. The cake was picked up on the day the of the event, and looked nothing like the photo. The cake was supposed to be airbrushed, with mint green, lavender, and gold, yet this was not accomplished. Plus the special message was plastered on top of the cake, and the "father to be" saw this, when he picked up the cake. When I called her, she apologized for placing the message on the cake, despite the 3 meetings we had. She also informed me that she didn't own an airbrush machine and had no plans on renting one. However, 6-8 weeks is enough time to rent an airbrush machine, if it's what you promised your customers. After 3 private discussions, and stating that she understood the vision, the owner put no effort into making our cake, despite being paid in full. In addition, she failed us, by placing the special message on top of the cake, for all of the attendees at the party to see, although it was intended to be an intimate message inside of the cake to the parents. The owner was well aware, that this was a rainbow baby, and plastered it, on top of the couple's cake. She ruined the gender reveal, and has apologized, but refused to reimburse us. When I asked for a full reimbursement, due to her failure to produce, she blamed it on my expectations, rather than taking responsibility for her inability to produce. Apparently my expectations were too high. This cake costed me hundreds. I will never buy from this bakery/owner again. We had intentions on using her for the shower, however, it's obvious that she is incapable of producing, so we can't take any chances. This couple deserved better, and she showed no humility for ruining their cake, and almost ruining their day. Never Again!
