This is what the cushion looked like when I first contacted B & D

I went to B & D based on a recommendation from someone and their great reviews on Yelp. From the start there were some issues, like telling me the fabric was ordered when I gave them the deposit, only to hear three weeks later that it was not in stock. That was a little disappointing, but they are a busy shop and it's not unusual to not make deadlines with supply chain issues these days. In my experience, it's easy to get 5 star reviews when everything goes well, but real customer service is when things do not go well and you really see how a company stands behind their work. This is my reason for two stars. I had B & D reupholster my couch and loveseat. It was pretty expensive, but the couch has built in recliners and non removable cushions so that probably added to the cost. When they finally were done with them months later, they looked great! That is until a puckering of the fabric started to appear on the middle couch cushion. I immediately contacted Lothar and sent him a picture. He responded quickly and said I could drop off the cushion, but I reminded him that the cushions were not removable. I then waited another couple of weeks without being contacted before I wrote him again. He wrote back quickly to ask where I was located and I told him. Another two weeks went by without hearing from him, so I wrote again. All my texts were courteous and I asked if he had any thoughts yet on how to handle my cushion. Another two weeks went by so I wrote him again acknowledging that he was likely busy, but asked if he was willing to help me with the cushion since we paid $$$ and this was a workmanship issue. He wrote back and said he would come back by and pick up the couch shortly. I was really relieved. They came to get the couch and within a week told me it was done and would be delivered back. I thought that was fast considering how long it took to be done the first time, but really pleased. Imagine my disappointment when Lothar dropped the couch off and said that they had taken it all apart and re stretched the fabric but couldn't fix the puckering. He said the company was out of stock for the fabric so they couldn't reorder it to redo it. A designer friend looked at the before picture and the couch after and said there was basically nothing that was done to the couch. I felt the same way. I called the fabric company and was told there were over 100 yards of the fabric that Lothar said was not in stock. The rep at the company told me that it had not been out of stock in recent months. I tried to contact Lothar again a few times, always respectfully, but have never heard back. Perhaps he was miffed that I checked on the fabric and saw that what he told me was untrue. It was just very suspect how fast their turnaround was and the fact that the puckering looked just as bad as when it went in to the shop for repairs. One picture was taken when the puckering was first noticed and the second after it came back "repaired". To be fair, the puckering in the second picture got worse over the three months before B & D picked it up and returned it. But it definitely doesn't look repaired at all. So, two stars because customer service is really when a company cares enough about their workmanship to make things right

Queen Anne "Cow" Chair reupholstered in 2011

We had two Queen Anne chairs reupholstered here and couldn't be happier. The chairs were in pretty rough shape and they were able to clean them up and make them look amazing. We picked a kind of unusual fabric and design that turned out beautiful and we get compliments on them all the time. We are waiting on a rocking chair to be reupholstered now and know we will be more than happy with the results. It's not cheap, but if you have a chair you love and want to give it a new life, take it here!

We had a pair of bar stools that the original leather had disintegrated on. I searched Yelp reviews for some options to get them reupholstered and came across B&D. Even they could not duplicate the same stitching that was on the original leather I was told what they could do. We were able to pick out our own material and had them do the work. I was told that it would take 2 weeks and they did it in one! I am very, very with how they turned out! Better and cheaper than buying new! I highly recommend B&D! They do great work for a reasonable price!

Lazyboy electric recliner after its makeover by B&D. The original Lazyboy stuffing material was cheap. Now it's better than it was new!

Lothar did an outstanding job of reupholstering both a wingback recliner as well as an electric LazyBoy recliner. They both needed to be completely redone. He picked up and delivered and I couldn't be more pleased. He delivered slightly ahead of the date promised too.

B & D reupholstered my 35-year-old sectional sofas and I couldn't be happier with the work. They look and feel brand new. The fabric is perfect and the workmanship is top-notch. If you are looking for quality craftsmanship at a fair price, look no further.

Look at the difference. It's amazing!

Excellent job. We refurbished a 100 year old chair that was my husband's great grandparents. It looks brand new and carries the sentimental value that can be passed down generations! The owner is very nice and knowledgeable with lots of suggestions and carries a lot of varieties of fabrics. They also deliver! I definitely would recommend this place to anyone!

I am very pleased with the craftsmanship!

These guys do quality work at competitive prices. I needed two cushions on my mid-century lounge chair to be reupholstered. I purchased my own fabric so the quotes I received were strictly for labor. B&D quoted the best price. I received a quote for $300 from a shop in Berkeley, $175 from another Concord shop and $130 from the good folks at B&D. Need I say more? Superb craftsmanship for a fair price.

The bottom was falling out. The springs were so far gone that every time you sat in it you felt like you might actually fall through. Artisan Interiors rebuilt the interior completely, eight-way hand-tied springs, the whole structure, and saved the original fabric his grandmother had chosen. All of it. They polished the wood while they had it. Two to three weeks, reasonable price, no drama. David runs the operation and was easy to talk to from the first conversation. Knowledgeable, straightforward, no overselling. It's a family business -- his father is the upholsterer -- and it shows in how they treat what you bring them. I didn't fully understand how damaged it was until I got it back. Now it feels the way it was supposed to feel. Solid. Sturdy. You can sit in it comfortably without holding your breath. It's been around for two hundred years, and with good care it'll be around for two hundred more. Thank you Artisan Interiors!

I had a Chippendale chair with a broken seat base that needed to be replaced, but wanted to keep the fabric. Most places weren't interested in fixing something 'so small'.. So, I got on Yelp and decided to use their AI Assistant to find someone who could help. The responses came faster than I could have anticipated. The first one was from Leo at Leo's Upholstery. This was a business I was already considering, being somewhat close after 2 in Oakland. Leo's reviews are what sold me, outside of how responsive Leo was to my inquiry. I dropped off the chair, had a great chat with Leo about the chair, what we had done with it and other topics. He said it would be ready by Monday or Tuesday. I receive a text early on Tuesday morning, letting me know the chair was ready. We arranged a time and I came to get the chair. It was as promised. It's fixed (after many months of being damaged), it looks great, feels solid and I couldn't be happier with the experience. Leo will be my Go-To Furniture repair going forward.

Leo, Sr managed the upholstery department for a high-end contract furniture manufacturer based in Oakland. After that company closed Leo started his own company and brought his son, Leo, Jr into this new business. Their knowledge of upholstery and reupholstery is broader and deeper than you will find at most companies their size. We made a mistake in buying a Mitchell Gold sofa and specifying a down seat and back. We sunk into the sofa in a way that was uncomfortable. We sought out Leo's Upholstery to firm up the seat and back pillows. Leo came to our house with several different foam density samples and wraps. He spoke very knowledgeably about the pros and cons of each. Leo took our cushions back to his shop and 10 days later we have a firmer, more comfortable sofa. Since then we've sent him 8 Pottery Barn dining chairs that have "bottomed" (i.e. lost the firmness of their seat cushion). We look forward to reusing these chairs rather than replacing them.
