I found a beautifully crafted hair tie and asked if there were more, so my daughter and I would have matching ties. She looked through the basket and said that she would make one on the spot! We had a bit more shopping to do, so we returned to discover a pair of beautifully matched hair ties in a beautiful, sturdy fabric that will last for years. Luckily I checked the receipt because the young dude had not given me the discount. When I requested the discount, he explained that they only give the discount for people using them for WORK, assuming that my darling daughter would not be using them for work. He smugly noted that some people buy them and don't actually use them for work. I assured him that they would, indeed, be used for work and after a few more back and forths, he relented and gave me a discount. Like many of us in the valley, we own a vineyard and a winery plus two of us have jobs in conservation, so yeah, our entire family wears Redbacks. The weird sexist and possibly racist assumptions and patronizing attitude made me very sad. It's cool that they are in the valley but I'm not sure I'm headed back. See the photo? This year I decided it was finally time to order my own. She takes a duct-tape measurement of your feet (both of them - which is great because my feet have almost a half-size difference) and then crafts a pair of boots to your exact specifications. If you order during the busy summer season it can take awhile (I ordered in early July and my boots were finished in late October), but it was well well worth the wait. The quality and skill that went into making these shoes is obvious. Besides being beautiful, they are immensely comfortable beyond any shoes I have ever worn before. The soles are made of repurposed shredded rubber that allows your feet to really feel the texture of the ground while still protecting you from sharp bits. And you can patch them yourself. Yes, they were expensive, but if you take care of them they should last decades. I don't plan to buy any other daily wear or outdoorsy/hiking shoes for the foreseeable future. Yay!

I showed her the shoes I liked and tried them on. At the time, they felt fine, but I've tried to wear them and they're way too narrow for my Fred Flintstone feet. I went and got them widened, and I've been wearing them around the house with thick socks on, but they're still too narrow and hurting one foot (the bigger one). This bums me out because the shoes weren't cheap and I don't live in the area - so now I'm stuck with shoes that don't fit because the salesperson who's an expert in this area sold me shoes that really weren't the right size. I'd been to Sole Desire before and worked with another salesperson who was AWESOME and near exactly what I needed. When I'm there, I always splurge and buy a couple pair because this store is so good and the service is usually top notch, but I feel like that last visit was a major exception to the rule and that the salesperson was about the SALE and not the service. Now I'm stuck with a pair super cute and expensive shoes that don't work for my fat feet. Wah.
