That was my experience last night at Sports Basement. I was there for an in-store event (so much fun!) and decided to sneak away from the party for a few minutes to finally research a backpack I've been needing -- one strong and comfortable enough to serve as my Wildfire Go-Bag. Every employee I spoke with was helpful and upbeat. Paul, in the backpack section, was exceptional. He listened carefully to what I needed, explained the differences between models, and taught me how to fit a pack properly so it wouldn't strain my back. Within 20 minutes! After trying the first, I was astonished how comfortable the second was: the Osprey Aura AG LT 50. It's a mid-range pack that fit my body better than the Osprey Renn 50. It feels supportive, and the deep burgundy color is stunning. It's even adjustable, so if for some reason someone else needs to carry my bag, it can be adapted to protect their back, too. Thanks to the event's 20% discount, I was able to get the ideal match for my needs at the price of a lower-range model that didn't fit me as well. Paul also suggested a couple of brilliant extras--like the portable Cleanwaste toilet kit and the Katadyn BeFree water filter. For my wildfire go-bag, they're exactly the kinds of things that will make a difference. I appreciated how thoughtful and practical his recommendations were. It's rare to leave a store feeling both educated and excited about a purchase -- but that's exactly how I felt. Luckily I checked the receipt because the young dude had not given me the discount. When I requested the discount, he explained that they only give the discount for people using them for WORK, assuming that my darling daughter would not be using them for work. He smugly noted that some people buy them and don't actually use them for work. I assured him that they would, indeed, be used for work and after a few more back and forths, he relented and gave me a discount. Like many of us in the valley, we own a vineyard and a winery plus two of us have jobs in conservation, so yeah, our entire family wears Redbacks. The weird sexist and possibly racist assumptions and patronizing attitude made me very sad. It's cool that they are in the valley but I'm not sure I'm headed back. See the photo? Kayaking the Russian River is something I've had on my to do list for years. This summer, with the…read moreriver still flowing nicely well in to July, I decided to finally make it a priority for a weekend adventure. In reading, Yelp and other reviews all signs indicated that King's was THE place. I had stopped in the shop during other trips to Guerneville to check out their outdoor clothing and accessories, so I was familiar with them. I had decided on what's labeled as their Trip #2 on the website which is a 5 mile kayak (self guided) from Johnson's Beach to Monte Rio. I called and reserved a tandem kayak about 4 days in advance and was given a few options of a start time. I choose 11 am since we were driving in from the East Bay and didn't want to leave home too early. They were super friendly and helpful when calling and made sure we understood the trip details and were booking the right package for our skills and needs. A credit card number is required to hold your reservation. We arrived closer to 10::30 and luckily found parking on the street right near the shop-I was worried about that on a summer Sunday but maybe getting there earlier helped. The girl who checked us in was super knowledgeable and made sure she showed us a map of our route, which includes a small section where you need to get out of your kayak and walk it about 200 yards around the dam to circumvent it and then launch back in. We were provided a dry bag, paddles, kayak and life vests. They have you walk a few blocks down to Johnson's Beach and they meet you there with the kayak. This year, after the 2023 rainy winter, the river was flowing nicely-we had a mostly smooth paddle down the river. For quite a while we had quite a bit of solitude and it was so peaceful and lovely with the river and redwoods. Things got a little busier towards Monte Rio beach and downright chaotic as we had to navigate hoards of people swimming with no situational awareness of our kayak and others coming through. It was a relief to get past it and get our kayak to the boat launch. You call Kings as you approach Monte Rio to schedule your pick up. They were there for us to shuttle us back to Guerneville within 5 minutes of us leaving the water. I had the most wonderful day out on the river. We saw lots of water birds and turtles and for the most part it was a very serene trip, Highly recommend Kings and would 100% use them again. They know the river well and gave us advice about certain areas and seem like they truly love what they do!
