Waited in line to get cookies and a dog treat all to be told when I get to the register that they don't allow dogs. This lady came from the back and walked in and shouts in front of everyone "sorry no dogs allowed thank you." But you serve dogs treats??? Then walks away without even acknowledging me. 1) they have no sign that states animals aren't allowed. If that was the case I would've obliged. 2) they don't accept cash.. it's CASH. If you want more customers I would suggest allowing cash and you NEED A SIGN THAT STATES DOGS ARENT ALLOWED. Oh and last this lady came to the front to put more cookies and she wasn't wearing gloves, so who knows if she even washed her hands but even so at least use tongs or parchment paper so customers don't get a wrong impression. Food and drink is great but the staff absolutely ruins this place. The ladies who work here in the front of house are so rude it takes all the fun out of going here. The last few times I came here the sandwich I order has taken 25 minutes so I ordered ahead. I get to the cafe and it's not made. Ok, that's a bit frustrating but I point it out to the barista and immediately she starts yelling that it's not their fault that the app didn't tell them to make it. I proceeded to wait 45 minutes and one of the baristas screamed in my face when I tried to ask for the order to be made/refunded for the inconvenience. I'm really starting to hate this place which is a shame because it could be so good. I wish I could get the good coffee/food without the terrible people in front ruining it. At this point I can't even be mad at the baristas here because it's an issue of management or lack there of. When childish, volatile people work for you and don't know that there will be consequences for treating your customers like dog poo it's not gonna go well for your business long-term. All I have to say is...I don't usually eat sweets. If I am going to eat something sweet, it really needs to be worth my while; and I have got to say that this place is definitely worth it. My friends and I stopped by during our two day visit to San Diego, and I put this place on my list of a handful of places that needed to be visited before heading back to Ventura. I am so glad I stopped by. I ended up picking up a lot of goodies because I wanted to try a variety of things and Azucar was the last stop before the drive home. I picked up the guava cheese, mango cheesecake, pistachio macaron, cielo de limon, mojito cookie, and something else I can't find the name of anywhere (but it had pineapple chunks in it and resembled the cielo de limon). I absolutely loved it all! (Of course I shared this all with friends and family, as I mainly wanted to try a taste of everything). My favorites were the pistachio macaron (the passion fruit filling was so tart, which was amazing), and the cielo de limon. Also tart. However, everything was delicious. Needless to say, this is going to be a location I stop by every time I visit San Diego! Haven't been here in years but felt compelled in leaving a review since I just watched a video on Porto's (which receives a LOT of hype). I was introduced to Azucar about 5 years ago from a former boss. I fell in love with the place - the Cuban meat pies, Guava Cheese pastry...so delicious. I remembered there being more filling in the guava cheese pastry at Azucar compared to Porto's. However, Azucar is on the pricier side, unfortunately. Did I think it was worth it? Yes. I've also visited the store in person a few times, too, and tried their passion fruit macaron, which was pretty darn good. However, I do remember having questions and concerns regarding sanitation when I was there, per the one-star review that someone left on Yelp on 3/22/2020. I remembered plates being dirty and seeing flies. I tried to overlook it because I really loved the products that this place produced. Great find for us. We love Cuban sandwiches and since Embargo Grill closed we've been looking for a replacement. I wasn't a huge fan of my first bite because the roasted pork has cumin but after I dipped it in the garlic sauce that came with it, I was sold. We also had the pastelito with guava and cheese. The pastry was perfect but one side had guava and one side had cream cheese (unsweetened). Had they been together it would have been perfection. I prefer salty over sweet. Therefore I didn't come here looking for cupcakes or cookies. I (only!) wanted a meat pie, croquettes and a papa rellena....oh and a cuban sandwich. Unfortunately there weren't any papa rellenas left but 2 out of 3 isn't so bad. I ordered the espana sandwich but they were all out so I settled on the havana. The sandwich consisted of turkey, cream cheese, and a guava marmalade--it was really creamy and good. The bread was not too dense and toasted perfectly. The side salad was very fresh and the dressing was nice and light. The croquettes were ok but soggy and kept getting smushed when i picked them up. On the other hand, the meat pie was pretty fantastic. The meat was moist and flavorful while the pastry was light and flaky. The space is cute but very small. I think they can optimize their space better by having square tables instead of round ones and benches instead of chairs. There was also some sort of fly and fruit fly problem. It was a bit of an annoyance fighting over my own food with these pesky pests. I have to agree with Lyn P's review that the sitting space makes for a quick bite out rather than a comfortable leisurely meal. I've been a fan of this place for a while, so it's tuff to write a negative review about them, but I'm a long-time SD foodie, and I've seen toooo many places that started out great lose their way ... hoping this isn't another. First: stop wasting everyone's time trying to prepare hot food. You don't have the set-up for it, and you don't have the help. Be a bakery. That's what you're good at, and what you're set-up for. Second: Hire a barrista for the weekends. Expecting the cashier to do it isn't good customer service, and causes a huge backup. Third: In case you forgot, the door to your kitchen is open. Watching people in the kitchen rubbing their eyes, noses, touching their mouths, and playing with their hair, and then preparing food? It's fn digusting....btw, where is the sink? I didn't see a single person wash their hands.... Last: I don't need to spend $30+ on pastries, and get an attitude from some petulant teenager. If your people aren't happy, fire them. This isn't the first time have had poor service and an attitude. I generally don't complain; I just don't go back. This is the first time - however - I have actually PAID FOR MY food AND THEN LEFT 20 minutes later when it came out 1) wrong, 2) burnt. I left without asking for a refund, without asking for my food to be remade. Why? Because I'm sooooo over your snotty stuck-up help, and I don't need the BS and the drama for a lousy $6 bucks. This is hardly the only place in SoCal to get a good pastry. I'll try it again if I'm in OB, but I won't bring friends/clients .,.. it's too embarrasing... . Iloveazucar, yes I do. I love that I can nibble on a variety of goodies and that I don't have succumb to the traditional slice of cake or pie when going out for dessert. It's perfect during my quiet times of desperation and when a snickers bar just will not satisssfy. Rather, it's when I just want a little some, some. Some....thing sweet that is. (get yer minds outta the gutta!). They got such great assortments of pastries, cookies, cupcakes and other eye catching treats as well as what sounds to be (but, I have yet to try) their delightfully tasty Cuban sammiches and coffee drinks. Though as awesome as this place is, it does have few flaws which prevents it from being 5 stars worthy in my book: Red Velvet Cupcake - Besides it's silky frosting, nothing about it stands out. Lacks a bit in flavor and needs to be left in the oven for probably another minute or so. Each bite left an after taste of dough. Nope, that ain't done. Mojito Cookie - What most have Yelped about. It's a simple sugar cookie for the most part, with a distinct lime favor to it. Also would do them good to keep it in the oven for another minute. After a few bites into it, you can see it was undercooked. Yup, that ain't done either. Guava and Cheese Pastry - My favorite of all Cuban sweetness that pairs perfectly with their morning cup of joe. Now with this, they had done just right! Nicely glazed and crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. The taste factor of the guava and cheese...heavenly. But....the filling is unevenly distributed and not enough. I came here yesterday off of a recommendation from a friend and am so happy I did! Parking was a little challenging to find, but I'll chalk that up to it being a holiday weekend. We got inside and we're struck by the beautiful pastries and baked goods inside- yummmm! It was my birthday, so I really wanted the birthday cake, but decided that 8:30 am was a little too early for that haha. I ended up getting a latte and the Cuban pastry- which was delicious and demolished in about one minute flat! My girlfriend had the chia muffin - which was gluten-free- and loved it! She said it was moist and fluffy, she would get it again. The coffee was decently smooth and seemed to be a medium roast. I must preface this review by stating that I was raised by a Cuban family and grew up in Miami, FL. You will not beat the Cuban bakeries in Miami EVER. However, as for southern California, this is the BEST you will find. I have been to other so-called Cuban eateries in SoCal like Andre's in S.D. and Porto's in L.A. This place is smaller and blows them all out of the water. This joint calls themselves a "patisserie" ; interesting but acceptable. For my true-blooded Americano's the word Pastel is spanish for Pastry. Cubans call their pasties Pastelitos; they are similar to turnovers but much more savory & delicious. Azucar has all the goods, croquettas, pastelitos and Cuban toast. For those of you that are not familiar with the goodies you find at a Cuban bakery you must try the following: Pastelilto de Queso (AKA - Cream Cheese Rolls) Pastelito de Carne (AKA - "Meat Pies" - weird English name =P ) Pastelito de Guayaba y Queso (AKA - Guava & Cheese Pastry) Croquetta de Jamon (a delightful fried goody made with a ham paste-don't doubt it) Papa Rellena (another delightful fried goody that can be described as a mashed potato ball with a savory ground meat center) Cuban Toast (Closest thing to real Cuban bread you will find in California and they press the toast - unlike Porto's in L.A; what a joke!) Make sure to enjoy all the above-mentioned goodies with a Cafe con Leche, which is basically a Cuban latte (milk & Cuban espresso). If you wanna to get truly authentic, dip your buttery cuban toast in your cafe con leche; trust me on this. I have yet to try the sandwiches or fancy desserts. This is due to fact that I have to get my bakery fix each time I've visited. The only thing I miss about my hometown are the Cuban bakeries. Thank the universe for Azucar, its there to fill the void. Lovely bakery with amazing desserts. In addition to being a bakery, Azucar is also a café with sandwiches and such. Started out with savory meat pastries - ground beef with spices inside a pastry topped with a slightly sweet glaze. This warmed-up appetizer was phenomenal and was my favorite item during my visit. Mango upside-down cake was delicious and satisfying, albeit the portion was a bit small. Mojito sugar cookie was delightfully soft and chewy with plenty of mint and lime flavor. Could have used a tad less sugar on top but that's just a personal preference. Was slightly disappointed with the unavailability of Chai latte, but then again this is a Cuban-style bakery and there were plenty of other caffeine options. I've been meaning to update this review because I have been back here, oh I don't know, like every week since I first walked through the door. I keep trying things from the menu and continue to be amazed. First of all - the manchego and ham quiche is incredibly good. It's not the french style quiche most people are used to eating. This has a flaky crust and the layers of ham, egg and cheese are more separated. But they come together in your mouth perfectly. The mojito cookie that everyone raves about is a must-have. I love mojitos and to capture the essence of a mojito in a cookie is nothing short of brilliant. And as for the cupcakes. I've tried so many more flavors - the chocolate, the carrot cake, the pumpkin and yes, yes, the red velvet. All of them good. The red velvet was more chocolatey than I am used to, but it is still heavenly. I am thinking that I will have a long love affair with Azucar. Now where is the rest of that cupcake??? read more

Driving 25 miles is expensive now days! Getting my mojito Cuban cookie fix priceless! Azucar It's a Cuban bakery with an elegant touch of France. I love the pastries but they also have Cuban sandwiches with a side garlic/sauce to die for. When you order your sandwich they ask if you want chips and they serve you banana ones they are so good. They also have empanadas de carne and croquetas for those who miss cuban food. If you like cuban coffee this is the place. It is pretty strong but it goes excellent with most pastries. So far my favorite dessert there was the mojito cookie which is almost like a sugar cookie with mint leaves in it so different but outstanding. That's what disappoints me. However, upon arrival, I saw merely a handful of authentic Cuban items. Among other things there were muffins & scones. SCONES? I scoffed at the idea of scones at a Cuban Bakery. What was this world coming to???? BUUUUUUUUT....the food that they have is very good. And upon further investigation I did see that they describe themselves as a "Cuban Style Patisserie" and not a Cuban Bakery. Have had the Cuban ( pulled pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickle, mustard), the Berto (serano ham, machego cheese, arugala), & the Cuban in Paris (Brie, arugula, pear, Ginger spread)...all great. The Havana ( turkey breast, guava marmalade, cream cheese)... I found to be too sweet. Sandwiches are made w/ freshly baked organic flat bread & then pressed which gives the sandwiches a nice crunch. Comes w/ a nice side salad or plantain chips ( I always go w/ the chips). The mojito cookie is excellent & unique with a hint of lime & mint. My puppy devoured the monolo dog biscuit. Had the meat pie... Tasty in a puff pastry shell...wish it was bigger. Service was fast even though they were busy. Nice, cute place. This rating is for the service, not the food. We went in to get a couple desserts to try in the hopes that we might potentially order a wedding cake from here in the future. We ordered three small desserts, which they put in a large (probably holds 6-10 desserts) pastry box. We also ordered a small meat pie and a coffee along with dog treats. Evidently, my fiancé lost his balance in the store while leaving. He now realizes the desserts had shifted quickly in the box as he walked, causing him to try to correct the box, and he dropped the box while seeking to correct it because he was holding a cup of water in his other hand. The staff was friendly about the spill which was appreciated, and they attempted to "repair" the damaged desserts. However, the girl behind the counter asked me what happened, and I said I didn't know because I was outside with our dogs. She said they only could save two desserts, but she did not offer to replace the third one. She asked how I wanted her to box them and I said to put them in individual boxes in a bag. She accommodated my request. To me, these desserts (which aren't cheap), should be boxed individually and bagged together to ensure they don't become damaged during travel. This seems important since a large portion of their clientele walk here with their dogs, and large boxes won't prevent the smaller desserts from sliding during travel. Disappointingly, I opened the boxes when we got home to see that both desserts still pretty damaged. I know they are a small business, but I have never been to any food establishment/coffee joint where they did not offer to replace a damaged good. Why does it matter what happened?! Our interaction turned from friendly/accommodating into accusatory/non-accommodating. She also forgot to give me my meat pie, which I had to go back for and she didn't apologize for it. If they are this nit-picky about a couple desserts, then we certainly won't use them for our wedding cake or patronize their business in the future. read more

First off the cookie was free because someone from work brought them in. +1 straight off the bat. However I would pay the price to get the cookie I just ate back into my mouth again. It was a oatmeal toffee cookie with salt sprinkled on top. Salty, sweet, textural goodness. The cookie wasn't greasy and didn't taste artificial like some cookies can be. To my great sad surprise, the tummy had no more room, but the eyes were certainly a different story. Therefore, my friend and I decided to buy the flan and share it. Was that enough for me? Nope! I bought the Artemisa and Divina to go. Ate it later that evening and oh my goodness, Azucar kicked extraordinary desserts butt. I know, you're thinking how is this possible? But yes, it is possible!
