This is a rare 5 star review from me! A local restaurant that is far enough away from the tourist areas or downtown that you want to go for a nice sit down without a long wait or huge menu. The most impressive thing is the works of art that are deserts in the showcase. Knowing that the draw is the sweets I was pleasantly surprised that they have food, beer and wine to set up a nice full meal. Our order was so complete that we had to take home th desert that we camefor in togo boxes. if you are a soup or tomato love I highly suggest getting there cup of tomatoes soup and salad. my eyes popped out of my head when they brought me salad that seemed big enough for two people. With a side of smoked salmon I couldn't fit everything in. My partner had a sandwich that was bigger than the size of her head and a crazy nice strawberry spritzer. The cheesecake smob that I am I took home something that I took a a chance on because I am trying not to be a creature of habits. A lemon strudel cheesecake out of the refrigerator the next day is probably better freshly made. When I go back I will defiantly make space for everything. The desserts at both locations are indeed extraordinary. Every dessert is lush and decadent and definitely a treat. This location is much smaller than the other and just as popular so it can feel hectic when busy. Highly recommend the Le Bette Noir, Black Velvet and The Viking cakes. It's impossible to stop in here and not leave with something. We weren't planning to get anything, but couldn't help but take a peek. The desserts really are extraordinarily beautiful. We left with a lemonade with kiwi, and a chocolate chip cookie with cherries and walnuts. The lemonade! Fresh crushed kiwi will now need to be in every lemonade I drink :). Brendan was so helpful explaining the ingredients in each dessert and my friend and I enjoyed chatting with him about them. We quickly decided on a tortamisu for me and a fruit tart for her and our drinks were for me iced brown sugar with oat milk and she had an iced matcha with strawberry. A Very Disappointing and Uncomfortable Experience I honestly had an awful day and, at the end of it, I simply wanted to get a slice of cake to cheer myself up. It was something small, but I was looking forward to having a little treat and ending the day on a better note. I placed my order at 8:59 p.m., just one minute before the establishment was scheduled to close at 9:00 p.m. I completely understand that placing an order right before closing may not be ideal for the employees, and I understand that everyone wants to get home at the end of their shift. However, the business was still open, and I was simply ordering something that was available. What happened afterward really caught me off guard. Immediately after my order ticket printed, I heard an employee say something very loudly. The timing was so immediate that I couldn't help but feel that the comment was about my order or about me. I don't want to put words in anyone's mouth or claim to know exactly what they meant, but hearing it loudly enough for me to clearly hear, immediately after placing my order, made me feel extremely uncomfortable. And honestly, given the kind of day I had already been having, it really affected me. I wasn't looking for anything complicated. I wasn't asking for special treatment. I just wanted a slice of cake to make myself feel a little better after having a terrible day. Instead, I ended up sitting there feeling embarrassed, uncomfortable, and honestly disgusted by what I had heard. I've worked in hospitality myself, so I understand what it's like to have a long shift and to be ready to close. I understand the frustration that can come with getting an order at 8:59 p.m. But I've also learned that customers shouldn't be made to feel like they're a problem or a burden for ordering while a business is still open. If your posted closing time is 9:00 p.m., someone ordering at 8:59 p.m. shouldn't be made to feel guilty or uncomfortable for doing so. I'm not writing this to attack the employee personally, and I can't speak to their intentions. I'm simply sharing my experience and how it made me feel. The timing, the volume of the comment, and the fact that it happened immediately after my ticket printed made me feel incredibly unwelcome. Sometimes people don't realize how much a seemingly casual comment can affect someone. You never know what kind of day the person on the other side of the counter has had or how much that small interaction might mean to them. Wedding cake tasting #3 of 3 - have heard good things about the taste and visual appeal of this dessert spot, but hadn't stopped by in many years. The shop is sleek, long and modern. We were surprised that many of the cakes were not available in slices - a whole case, in fact. There was only one case that had sliceable cakes, all of which seemed to have a fruit element. We tried the blood orange ricotta and the chocolate blackberry. Unfortunately, while beautifully presented and substantial in portion, neither of the flavors wowed us. Their selections of desserts look amazing, beautiful and the most difficult part is figuring out which to get. Had a $50 gift card to use with my mom for her birthday and only going $0.61 over, we were able to order four petite desserts and a Strawberry Rose Lemonade to go. There was a line reaching the door, but it wasn't a long wait and actually gave us enough time to pick which desserts we wanted to bring home. Parking took a bit longer (fortunately free on Sundays), but we were able to find a space a block down. After making our selection, the desserts were all wrapped and well-fitted into a white box. Initially, I was worried about the appearance after unfolding the wrapping. However, only the cake slice seemed to be affected with a small crack near the tip (totally okay with us). It is worth noting the desserts took an hour drive and were refrigerated for a couple more hours before we were all able to try them. There were four of us in our family trying an equally cut piece of each dessert, and the lemonade was tried by only my mom and myself. Our go to lunch and dessert spot everytime we come to SD. It is a must! This is our first time at this location but the food and desserts were just as good and consistent. For sandwiches we ordered the BLT grilled cheese with the tomato basil soup and a mushroom grilled cheese sandwich. Then ordered about 3 different desserts including the black velvet, strawberry pastry and lemon tart. With a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The black velvet cake had more of a marscapone filling compared to cake. The strawberry pastry was delicious and warm. The lemon tart was also delicious and had a tarty filling. My favorite. I also tried their strawberry rose lemonade, which is basically what it tasted like. A carbonated lemonade with a strawberry rose flavor. Husband ordered a blueberry cheesecake type of tarte. Daughter and I split bread pudding. It took well over 15 mins to put it all together. This shop is very lively, and they usually have a long line. They also do take a while to have your order ready, so patience is definitely needed here. So good! Our blueberry coffee cake and the custard filled pastry were to die for! Also the tomato soup and grilled cheese was extremely delicious!! The coffee came out cold so we asked them to remake (which then came out actually steaming). Could tell the gal who brought it out was annoyed because she dropped it off without saying a word (awkward). Ambiance- horrible! They have a nice outdoor patio area (only a few tables inside) and they have MASSIVE construction about 25 feet away in the street in front of them. Once inside the shop/cafe, you'll be allured by the dessert creations; they are visually remarkable. While this is a small restaurant offering a limited menu of coffee, tea, wine soups, salads sandwiches and desserts. I've only had the desserts here and desserts will be the focal point of my review. A glance at the display case, all so tempestuous, some even offered in gluten free options, flour free, but not calorie free :( It's a constant battle to resist the temptation of sweet treats but there times you simply surrender to the weakness for these confections. Despite high caloric content, I like cake and I just have to taste. There are several signature whole cakes offered: ShangriLa, Viking, Tres Leches, Ivoire Royale, Tortamisu Truffle Framboise, just to name a few and more...When a slice of their specialty cakes is available, I sometimes indulge. Limited street parking is sometimes challenging. This shop offers fantastic desserts, but sometimes the service is not consistent in terms of being cordial niceness and efficiency to match its moniker. Most recently, when the Viking cake was available by the slice, I had to have it. This decadent chocolate cake was plated and presented nicely by the staff server. The review is in the name of the business!! They are all extraordinary desserts. It wasn't busy when we got there but soon after there was a line out the door around 7pm. My family/book club crew stopped by for dessert and coffee. I opted for a glass of wine. They were out of the wine I ordered but offered me some tastes to choose a replacement.
