Late night ice cream craving led us here during our trip to SD. Was super happy they were still open when many other places were already closed. So we braved the one-way downtown streets and dodged paid parking lots, thankfully found a free parking space, and walked as fast as we could to Figaro, just in time. Our efforts paid off. We rewarded ourselves with delicious gelato - Chai, Tiramisu, Nutella, Peanut Butter. All great and yummy flavors. I also got me a Brownie Cheesecake - it was good, although a bit dense and firm. I would've liked it a little better if it were softer. They have so many cute and colorful dessert choices. Wish I could have tried more but it was almost 11PM, I didn't want to eat too much sweets. We walked in and the places looked amazing! The aesthetic was on point. The desserts looked amazing and we were so excited to have some. I ordered the Berry Cream Cheese Crepe. When I got it the crepe itself was overcooked, it was almost burnt. The filling tasted nothing like cream cheese it was more of a custard filling. It was like the inside of a custard donut. The presentation was nice but there is no créame cheese filling. I also ordered a cheese cake and was very sad, it was hard, dry and it tasted like it had been frozen and just thawed before putting on display. We also ordered the chocolate tart and coconut tart and it was just about the same. All in all I spent close to $60.00 and was very disappointed. Stopped by on a Saturday night with a friend for a sweet treat and had a great time! The atmosphere was super cute and there was plenty of outdoor seating to choose from. We were helped very quickly, and the line was not very long. in fact, we took longer to decide what we even wanted than it did to get to the front. My friend got the mixed berry, vanilla cake, I got the Oreo cheesecake, and we split the red velvet marquise the mixed, very vanilla cake was phenomenal, same with the Oreo. I love gelato. Today was a very good day. We'd had some dinner and we decided we wanted dessert so we took a walk. We saw some interesting places, and I saw the gelato sign. Many gelato places will also have espresso. This place, however, has a wonderful variety of goodies. They do crêpes, they have all sorts of little chocolates and some other pastries, but I ordered gelato. They had a really nice variety of flavors and I appreciate that It didn't have that artificial color enhanced look. I decided to have a single scoop of a mango and it was delicious. Now I'm not an expert so I couldn't tell you how authentic it is, but I will tell you it was yummy. Sometimes dessert is a work of art, sometimes it's just something yummy to satisfy a sweet tooth. This visit proved to be more on the artistic side than just sweet. Everything in the display case is absolutely beautiful and I wish I had time and physical capacity to try them all. But alas, I have my limits and had to stick with what I came for-the crepe. The nice man behind the counter whipped up a couple of delicious crepes for us-I had the banana, strawberry and Nutella and my wife had a cheesecake something or other. They were both sooo good and plenty large to share. I should have stopped halfway through, but I pushed myself to finish it. The whole thing. Yup, I ate it all. I tried the lavender blackberry cake. It's about $10. And out of all the $10 cake I have tried here in San Diego, the experience here felt elementary. $10 cakes are usually complex and has few layers of entertaining ideas in there. Very cute speciality dessert spot in North Park with tons of adorable little treats, cake slices and gelato as well. I was ordering for a group and got a bunch of different options, including the Pumpkin, Apple tart, Mango Cheesecake, and Lemon. My personal pick was the classic "Cheesecake" that was shaped like a piece of cheese - So cute! There are a couple seats inside and a little patio out front. Parking is hard to find but that's typical for North Park. Only downside was that there was only 1 person working so service was a little slow. There was only 1 party ahead of me and in total I waited about 20 minutes from the time I walked in to the time I walked out. The guy before us took his time and ended up not getting any and the owner was totally chill. We each ordered a scoop and truly enjoyed out experience. Their delicious treats are so nicely displayed, you end up wanting to eat everything, but also don't want to spoil their prettiness by eating them! I ordered the horchata latte and my friend ordered the orange and mango dessert pastry. The horchata was warm, sweet, milky, slightly powdered, with a slight amount of foam and cinnamon powder dusted. It was perfect. I like that the desserts aren't one-note here, instead combining multiple flavor profiles into each confectionary. The desserts are expensive at around $10 a piece, which is why I think it'd make a great gift or a treat for a special occasion. The Hillcrest location is much better than the North Park location, which has fewer tables and can get pretty hectic. 4 stars out of 5 because of the price point and also because I had a banana butterscotch dessert here that had a off-putting sour taste from the banana filling. read more

We walked to Figaro Dessert Cafe after having dinner at an Italian restaurant further south on Fifth Ave in Hillcrest. The map was wrongly guiding us toward the North Park shop which also happened to be on University Ave. I have actually come to this location before when the business was known for "munchies." The space has been nicely upgraded with a modern look compared to a Bohemian theme previously. The menu board on the wall behind the service counter was gigantic. I don't recall seeing a bakery or dessert place list every single item and its price like how they did here. It was rather overwhelming to study the board because of how extensive it was. Plenty of products, including gelato, were on display in glass cases surrounding the counter. We took a seat at one of the few tables inside after ordering slices of the Tiramisu and Mango Cake which was my choice. I ate the Mango Cake first before sampling the Tiramisu since the latter had a sweeter flavor profile. Two blackberries and three blueberries adorned the top of the multilayer fruity cake. The mango topping was smooth and neither tart nor too sweet. The coffee tone in the Tiramisu was rather subtle. Ladyfingers decorated the decorated the edge while large chocolate flakes topped the dessert. These two items each cost just under $10 so they were not cheap, however the quality was very good. read more
