Everything that I have tried here has been excellent. My favorites are the guava pastry, meat pie and the scones. I like that I can buy slices of cakes and desserts and don't have to get the whole cake. Of course, the coffees are always good. read more

This is truly a gem in the heart of downtown Ocean Beach. We literally went every single morning for Cuban coffee and a pastry (Cuban meat, pickle and mustard was to die for). We also tried the guava pastry and a mango cheesecake. You'll want to arrive early as the like for this hot spot gets super long. Totally walkable if you are staying in the immediate area. Otherwise they have convenient bike parking right out front. The staff are kind, patient and personable. While they are super busy they still take the time to genuinely greet and chat with every single guest. Highly recommend! read more

Above and beyond as always, food and service at Azucar!!!! Today I was picking up an order I put online for a lot of meat pies, and pastries for my staff. While waiting for some of the scones to finish in the oven, I ordered a Latte and this amazing quiche. Everything was amazing, clean little café, as always the food & service excellent! Wow everything is so good. I can't remember what this strawberry pastry was called but it was amazing 10/10 recommend. The scone was also really good, just hard to compare to the pastry. They make their own vanilla syrup, my vanilla latte was so good. Also my friends tried the sandwiches and said they were good as well. Also located on a cute street. read more

I recently had a guava and cheese pastilito and a cappuccino. The pastry was rich, heavenly flaky and delicious. The espresso was bold, well balanced and not too acidic. The cappuccino was served at the perfect temperature and delivered with hospitality. I'm glad to see that nothing g changed since the last time I was here a few years ago. read more

First time here and already a fan. We came here early on a Sunday morning and glad we came early because it got packed quick. The ladies behind the counter were super knowledgeable and nice. The coffee and pastries were amazing. The coffee is super strong which I love. I got the meat pie and peach champagne scone. Both so good, fresh and flavorful. The meat pie was flaky and tasty. It also comes with a dude of hot sauce. The inside is pretty small but the smell of all the pastries being baked smelled so good. I like that they have outdoor seating so you can enjoy the baked good and your coffee. If you're in the area come try this spot out it will not disappoint. I can't wait to come back and try some of their pastries and mini cakes. Thank you Azucar for a tasty first time. read more

Pleasantly surprised by how good these desserts were we had a guava bread that was like a toaster strudel with guava and cream cheese. The marshmallow lemon was really good toasted marshmallow around the whole dessert almost. The lemon coconut cake was absolutely delicious and the lemon was just the right tart with the fluffy cake around it. The toddler loved it a lot. The chocolate one was pretty good, but I gravitate towards the other desserts more. The bread was pretty good. Could use a bit more corn and maybe a bit crispy but overall I enjoyed it. read more

I'm not sure if this place counts as a hidden gem but it's DEFINITELY a gem! A cute little shop with a cozy interior, it was a little busy when we went and there's not much room to wait (if you're ordering a sandwich/food) but the line moves pretty quickly. The staff were so friendly and had some great recommendations! Now for the food: Cheese rolls- 10/10 dare I say even better than Porto's! Generous cream cheese filling and crispy sugar coating. Cuban meat pie- 100/10 it was piping hot from the oven with the juiciest pulled pork ever! How they kept the pastry so crispy with the meat so juicy amazes me, it was so good! Chocolate croissant- 1000/10 the best I've ever had, huge chunks of chocolate and my new favorite pastry! read more

Arrived about 10 minutes early on a Sunday. Good thing I did, because there was a long line by the time they opened at 8am. Everything behind the glass counter looked great. I just grabbed a few items to try: Passion fruit scone. The most soft and flavorful scone I've had. Buttery but not too buttery, and not overly sweet with just enough passion fruit running through. Cuban meat pie. So good. Stuffed with meat, but it also had depth of flavor with some mustard and other spices. I could've eaten a few more. The "Divina" cake. It has a bunch of my favorite dessert components, white chocolate cake, passion fruit, semi sweet toasted marshmallow meringue-like exterior. I would definitely return to SD just for this cake and bakery. read more

Food delicious service ridiculous. Rather than dividing labor so that they have someone at register, someone at coffee making, and someone boxing ordered items, Azúcar has one person doing all three tasks. Sometimes they have a person dedicated to coffee, but not usually. Line out the door that takes soooooo long is avoidable through proper management. read more

Cute little Cuban bakery & cafe with amazing food. The cubano sandwich was delicious. The cubano pastry was also divine, so flakey. The salted toffee cookie was by far my favorite. Mojito cookie was definitely a different flavor but still very good. The triple chocolate espresso cookie... so rich but so delicious. Staff was friendly as well. A must stop when in OB! read more

Exceptional! Stopped before we headed back to Vegas to take home some goodies. Arrived around 830 on a Thursday morning and was about 10-15 min wait. I picked a bunch of things and everything was so good. The shining stars were of course the meat pies and the pistachio cherry tart. I ordered 4 meat pies and I should have ordered 20! Haha! Such a sweet (pun intended) spot! As expected, there was a decent line midday on the weekend, but the friendly and efficient staff moved things quickly. We ordered a Havana and Cubano sandwich - one with the greens and champagne vinaigrette, and one with plantain chips and mojo. We both love a Cubano, but the Hanana was a surprise delight! The cream cheese and candied guava flavors with roasted turkey were wonderful. The bread is perfect for these classic sandwiches. Allll of the desserts looked beautiful, but I went specifically for the pastelito de guava. I picked up one of those, and also added a giant passion fruit & pistachio macaron. One of my favorite patisserie's in San Diego. It's a small store but they offer some seating indoors and outdoors. I recently visited on a weekday, mid morning and there was a short line to the door. The wait wasn't too long and moved pretty quickly. I ordered the meat pie, guava pastry, guava and cheese pastry and passion fruit raspberry scone. It was all delicious. The pastries and scones were both moist and not overly sweet. read more

So happy that Redditors recommended this place to me when I was planning a trip to ocean beach. Such an amazing place: friendly service and super delicious selections. I ordered the carrot cake: ate it all in one seating. It was delicious! Perfect sweetness and loved the crunchy cookies on top. Definitely one of the best I've had in San Diego. I also ordered 2 meat pies and a guava pastry. Everything hit the spot. I've so glad I spent the first part of day fasting and hiking in Torrey Pines. This was the best end to my day. I walked here as I was staying in Ocean beach but there are plenty of spots on the street near by. If you are craving some delicious Cuban pasteries and yummy desserts, definitely come here! read more

I tried the Coconut Cake...best I've ever had. The Mango Cheesecake was delicious! To drink, I had a Double Cortadito, so good! What brought me here were the Guava and Guava Cheese Pastelitos. I have only ever had these from Portos. Sadly, they were too rich! Not the Guava or Cheese, they were way too buttery! The amount of butter used over powered the Guava. Hopefully it's just the batch I had. I will be back to try their other cakes and sandwiches. read more

Loved the pastries here. Cashier was a bit curt, likely due to the long line, but excuses are excuses. Tres leches was decadent! I'll be coming back to try out their plain guava pastry without the cream cheese since I felt the ratio was off in the combination one. The guava jelly was SO yummy. 5 Star food!!!!! The guava pastry is Delicious and scones,,,absolutely the Best. Hands down Azúcar has amazing bakery. I waited 30 min in line, but I would have waited even longer for the delicious goodies. 1 Star Service for customer service I hope the owner reads this. The Customer service of the young lady who helped me today, was terrible. She was annoyed and very dismissive. I asked for certain pastry but it was loud so she couldn't hear me. She was so rude, and frustrated about what I wanted. The level of rudeness was so disgraceful and disappointing. I understand there is a long line, and super busy, thats a great thing for any business. Being rude to your customers when you finally get to the front of the, after waiting 30 minutes. It's so unprofessional. I recommend this bakery to all my friends and family. It's sad that's it's an amazing bakery but the customer service is so bad. Not a good combination. Azúcar is so busy and the pastries are in high demand so I guess having rude employees doesn't matter??? I was so excited and happy to go into Azucar and get my favorite pastries. The customer service I received was so bad and unprofessional today. it really bummed me out, coming from north county to stand in line, is not an issue. The way the employees are so rude, and won't even greet you. Wow! I remember when Azúcar first opened and the owners were there, helping customers. Absolutely amazing bakery. What happened???? I really hope, this gets handled and fixed. Azúcar is a fantastic bakery, I'm so sad that customer service is so bad. read more

This is a very small cafe right on the Main Street in OB, and when you try the food, it's easy to understand why there's always a line. Came on a Sunday and the line was out the door. We tried a few pastry items, a corn cookie, some of the meat options, and I had to try a Cubano sandwich. I still think of this sandwich even a month after having it. All the pastry items we tried were delicious but that sandwich, and the sauces it comes with are still stuck in my head. This place is a must try and believe me when I say it's definitely one of the best Cuban bakeries with better pastries than some of the more well known competitors. read more

I went here on a whim in seeking pastries. I did not expect my pastries be so warm! Both the peach tart with almond cream and the guava with cheese were delicious. I don't know if at baseline pastries at this place are always warm but that's what made this place special to me. Highly recommend. read more

I LOVE AZÚCAR!!! They seriously have the best scones I have ever had-- HIGHLY recommend the passionfruit & raspberry one-- I get it every time! All of their other pastries are amazing too! Today, we tried their sandwiches for the first time & I was extremely impressed. I got the Havana and my boyfriend got (I can't remember the name) one with a potato omelet inside. Everything was served extremely fresh & was very flavorful. The sandwich portions are HUGE for the price. Give this little hole in the wall some serious support. Horrible staff. Extremely rude. We went to purchase some pastries on a Saturday morning. We waited in the usual line (which takes approximately 10-15 mins, sometimes longer sometimes shorter). We ended up purchasing $60 in baked goods and two coffees. The staff member who checked us out didn't provide any ticket to the baristas. We ended up waiting for over 20 mins waiting for our drinks. When I went and asked about them, the barista was extremely rude and confrontational. When I had expressed that I had been waiting and didn't understand how they couldn't have a ticket for my drinks when it's on the receipt. She barked at me that I should have figure this out sooner and that I should have come back to speak with someone sooner instead of waiting. Which is very hard to determine because of the number of orders going through. Unfortunately she was very unpleasant and rude through our interaction. A few more drinks were made before ours eventually came out. When we mentioned that we needed napkins the same staff member rudely said "did you even check the napkin container? (WHICH WAS EMPTY!) If you don't want to be courteous to customers, then you shouldn't be working customer service. Needless to say we won't be going back to Azucar or endorsing them in any capacity. Sad this is the new normal for them, especially since their pastries and baked goods are extremely overpriced. read more

Wow this might be the best cheesecake I've ever had. Was visiting SD and stopped by this cute bakery for treats and was blown away. We even came back on our last day to take treats back home Mango cheesecake - amazing !!! So fresh and tangy it was Devine. Had a coconut crust on the bottom. Tiramisu - classic was very very good - good notes of Espresso and flavors Also we got the guava and cheese pastry and their chocolate chip cookies which were all amazing. Their coffee was very good as well. Can't wait to go back one day ! read more

AZÚCAR IS BORN! Continuing to make wedding cakes and desserts from home, Vivian decided to make this a full-time career. She felt San Diego needed a more tropical style of dessert. So, Vivian decided to combine her European training and Cuban roots to create Azúcar. Azúcar means sugar in Spanish and it is what gives life to Vivian's creations! Azúcar specializes in hand-decorated sweet works of art including cakes, cupcakes, cookies and desserts. Azúcar offers some specialty Cuban items such as croquetas, pastelitos, and of course Cuban sandwiches. Each one of a kind item is hand-made with only the finest ingredients.

Azúcar is the fulfillment of a life-long dream for Vivian Hernandez-Jackson. Vivian has combined her classical French training with her Cuban roots to develop a unnique product line of cakes and pastries that combines traditional favorites with new flavors and designs. Born and raised in Miami to Cuban parents, Vivian Hernandez has been baking since the age of seven. Dessert was always a huge part of growing up and every meal was followed by something sweet. When you step inside it overwhelming because their are so many good looking items but we had to keep it cute and just grab a couple of items we got the cinnamon bun and too egg sausage jalapeno kolachis. I wasnt paying attention or I wouldve got the banana bread latte but life goes on. The kolachis were great seasoned and warm the jalapenos weren't crazy hot but added flavor, the cinnamon roll was good and I like that it was made with sourdough the tang that is added gives the bun a nice balance.

But I was able to find parking right in front of OB Noodle House, and though it was tempting, there wasn't any seats in the front patio. Plus we were hungry...for Lu's! LOL! No one was sitting in front, which was good for us! I had to have that meatball sandwich! I don't know if it's the toasted bread, delicious sauce, or melted cheese...and meaty balls....LOL! I know I need to explore the menu more, but the meatball sub is soooooo good! I think it's the best in San Diego! Cako still Approves!

Rosemary Lemon Zest Sourdough Bread had an interesting combination of flavors. I liked the outer crust which was harder than Hawaiian bread but not as hard as a baguette. It contrasted with the silky insides. A really good bread. Butter croissant had a thin crunchy outer layer and silky smooth inside. Loved the buttery flavor. Baguette was quite different than the French baguettes I'm use to. The crust didn't have a crunchy layer and the flavor was light sourdough. Very tasty. Sea salt bagel is the first sourdough bagel I've had. Texture was dense like other bagels I've tried. The sourdough flavor with the light sea salt combined to result in one of the best bagels I've had. This is my favorite treat here so far. Small round sourdough had the same delicious flavor as the baguette. I do prefer the crust of the baguette. Staff was nice and efficient. In the old days my mom and brother would take me fishing off the Ocean Beach Pier a couple blocks away. Sadly the pier is closed and scheduled for replacement. Would have been great if Sourdough & Moore was around back then.

If you want to display the food, please keep it covered and have a fly fan to keep the flies out. Now onto the food: I think having an option to have pasties reheated would be great, some of the pasties were made long before it was served so it got quite hard. Butter croissant: 4/5 it was good, nothing really that stood out Giant cinnamon roll: 3/5 it was given to us cold and hard, sorry I prefer my cinnamon roll warm. I went home to reheat it and it was alright. The icing was way too sweet and honestly kind of generic tasting. I love cinnamon rolls and this was okay at best, it's just giant but other bakeries have better. I didn't try their sourdough bread and that's what they're known for, eh not worth my time or money to try.
