This makes Azucar one of my top places to go my neighborhood of OB! I try to come once a week for a café con leche, a cheese roll, the best chocolate croissant in San Diego (right out of the oven!), cookies and little cakes/tarts to share with friends. It is a joy to come in here and be warmly greeted, no matter how busy it gets. I try to order online so I can enjoy my favorites without the wait (of course, once walk over there, I see new stuff and end up getting in line)! Love Azucar and their amazing staff!! There was a line, 15 minute wait, no problem. Friendly staff but very small place. What I wanted; Cuban sandwich, guava pastry and some deserts to take home. What I ordered Cuban sandwich and cookies. Deserts and pastries are way over priced, I was disappointed but had to opt to skip. The Cuban sandwich was OK but didn't taste much like a Cuban sandwich, the pork lacked flavor and the bread did not taste like Cuban bread. The sandwiches are average price for touristy area. The banana chips seemed as if they had come out of a bag and not made there. The garlic sauce was good and made the Cuban sandwich taste a little more like a Cuban sandwich. Yum! Stumbled across this place in Ocean Beach, and were pleasantly surprised. A Cuban bakery with some delectable looking goodies. We grabbed a Cuban sandwich to split and two cookies. I'm still wishing I could have bought an entire box of sweets. The Cuban was very good, all the parts were flavorful and the bread was actually Cuban bread- delicious. My husband enjoyed the plantain chips and the super spicy mojo sauce! I had a chocolate chunk cookie, which was loaded with big pieces of chocolate and baked to perfection, not underdone and not overdone. My husband had the salted toffee oatmeal cookie, and it was superb! I'll be looking for a similar recipe to make for him. WOW, if there is a place to go for desserts, its here. Cielo de Limon: This was a small dessert with pistachio cake, lemon cream, and pistachio cookie crumbs. This was AMAZING. Every bite was packed full of flavor. The brightness of the lemon hit you with every bite, but it never got too much. The pistachio isn't as obvious, but the cake and cookie complemented the cream so well! Passion Fruit and Raspberry Scone: I had never had this combination with my scone before. Usually, scones can be a hit of miss with how soft/hard the bread is. This one, was a perfect flurry scone that had raspberries embedded into the bread, and passion fruit syrup drizzled over it. I have been to this cute little place in OB several times. It has seriously good pastries and coffee. Don't let the line deter you- it moves fast. My coworker have been raving about this place for a long time. I decided to drive to OB and try it one weekend. The place was a lot smaller than I expected, drove past it a couple of times still couldn't find it. =) My bad. Regardless, we could find the place after we parked and walked there. First impression, good looking pasties and cakes. Great! Then we ordered. They ran out of decaf coffee, and they said they could make a new pot. I said, sure! I'd wait. Then we ordered a cake, a cheese roll and a little piece of chocolate. The food was nice. Cake (Divina) was great, cheese roll was ok not as good as the ones from porto but still good. Chocolate was good. Now...where's the coffee. After waiting for a long time, I went in to ask for the coffee. Sill brewing....I asked for a box to take half of Divina back home. The box I got was kinda dirty both inside and outside so I didn't pack it up and Divina went into the trash. (at that point, I didn't want to deal with them anymore). Coffee came out eventually but instead of drinking there, I got it to go. With people being on high alert on COVID19, I am paying more attention to the hygiene of restaurants. And I have to say that I was surprised to see somebody moving around and putting cakes into the display box with her bare hands. I hope that she's a pastry chef and doesn't handle money. The silverware has a lot of stains which I tried not to look. The cashier who handles money uses her hand to make to-go boxes. I never realized how good Cuban coffee and pastries were. Acuzar was one of the must-go places listed for San Diego. So we took a chance and glad we did. Finally a local bakery that I can go to in Ocean Beach. After living in OB for about 5 years, it's safe to say that Azucar has been the missing piece to this amazing little beach town. This place is a must-have, I go at least twice a week to get their meat pies and scones and on weekends I also indulge on their donut muffins which is a weekend only special. We were traveling from Dallas for a 1 week anniversary trip to San Diego. Our Airbnb host highly recommended this place for a coffee and pastry when we felt like it. The first time we went there, we were very impressed! I was happy to find my oat milk cappuccino with decaf . We also loved the guava puff pastry and the chocolate chip cookies. We decided to do another visit before we left, however, this time the experience was so different. The lady at the counter who was also the one who took my order and served coffee, did not seem to be in a good mood. I noticed a fly sitting on one of the quiches and I mentioned it to her, for which she simply shooed it away and did not acknowledge or explain anything. In fact one customer who came after me ordered a quiche and she gave him the one which had the fly on it ! She also made my coffee in between orders and it was sitting there for a while which made it colder than I would have liked. I can understand we all have bad days, but lady, you just lost a possible 5 star review from a traveler by that attitude. I really love their pastries and coffee, however this is the second time I received very poor service or in this case NO SERVICE at all. I walked this morning with my dog (dogs aren't allowed in the shop which I understand) I asked politely if the cashier could take my order from the door and I would hand my debit card ( they take no cash), the shop was empty, and he said in a very unpleasant tone that he rather not, and I had to tie my dog from a post outside. Happy with this bakery but some mixed feelings. Great: Flavors. My 2 favorite things: the raspberry passionfruit cupcake, the salted toffee oatmeal cookie. Theyve got this passionfruit thing down. The passionfruit filling in the enormous pistachio macaron was delish. The pistachio flavor was authentic and pronounced. The key lime bar was also very good. But the latter two were not without problems. Eh: the pistachio macaron was the size of your head. I was shocked that this wasnt a key mention anywhere in pics or reviews. That said there was a tonnn of filling. Disproportionate which 1. Overpowered the pistachio and 2. Resulted in too much goop which wasnt pleasant and we ended up scooping most out. The key lime bar was very good but the crust was missing something major: sugar, and the nuts it was comprised of werent ground finely enough so the crust was bland nuts, throwing off the dessert as a whole. I also got the multilayered chocolate ganache crunch wedge thing and it was too much somehow, but maybe that ones just on me. Not worth the drive if you are not in Ocean Beach. They don't take Azucar lightly which is Spanish for sugar. The most sugared pastries and lattes I have tasted. I ordered a pumpkin loaf and a peppermint mocha latte. Both were extremely sweetened for my taste. If you like extra sweetened pastries and lattes then this place is for you. read more

If you're Airbnbing it in "OB" as it's known by locals, It's quite possible that you (a) have dogs, (b) enjoy the funky throwback vibe of the town, or (c) you just want to beat the line at Hodad's when it opens daily. No matter, intrepid traveler, sooner or later you'll need coffee. And when you do, leash up the hounds and hotfoot it to Azucar, a delightful Cuban-themed coffee house and bakery. Situated on OB's main drag, Newport Ave, at the corner of busy Sunset Cliffs Blvd., it's easy to find and just a few blocks away from the cliff beach trail. There is inside seating and you'll also find a couple tables out front on the sidewalk. CCs accepted, gluten free options available. Once you step inside, you can't miss the glass display counter featuring empanadas, cakes and cookies, muffins and other baked goods that taste every bit as good as they look! Over our four visits, we tried an array of items and fell in love with each one. First, the coffee. Purist: Café Cubano, dark, rich and just a hint of bitterness. Hedonist: Café con leche, intense, thick and similar to what you'd find in a Havana café. Cubano sandwich, just enough of the panini press to give it a delicate crust. Pastelito de guayaba - we had these on every visit! Pastelitos de carne - savory empanadas that, while warm, are worth fighting over. Great coffee and bakery items! There is quite the selection of baked goods and desserts, and they all look amazing. The times I've been they had a couple gluten free baked goods and several gluten free desserts available, all clearly marked. The pumpkin scone and bourbon butterscotch custard I had were soooo good. Really good coffee too. The dulce de leche actually had a little too much dulce de leche in it for me personally, but was delicious. The cafe con leche is outstanding.
