What can I say?!!! This place is amazing!! Even though they are in a shared space at AMP 16-the staff makes you feel like a guest in their home! The two times I've visited, I've had their Shrimp arepas and both times have been amazing. The young man walked me through the process and made a recommendation. The!first time I had my arepa with the fried cheese (if I'm remembering correctly) and let me tell you!!!! Amazing. The shrimp was plump, veggie condiments-fresh and the arepa was delicious. Before the movie, Encanto, I had not idea what an arepa was! Now Azúcar Morena has fully educated and ridden me of my ignorance and allowed me to experience it first hand! On my second visit-I was craving the same dish I had the first time-but my friend at the counter (I think he's the owner's son) asked if he could do something different. This time-he fried the dough!!!! Listen to me! I never knew fried corn dough could taste so good!!!! It was fresh, crispy but not too much and it really worked with the Shrimp and pico filling. 10 outta 10 definitely! I could only post one pic cuz I was so ready to dive in!!! Definitely check this place out if you're in the are. Even if you're not, make the trip! I promise you will not be disappointed. Tell him I sent you

I was at AMP and like Venezuelan so I decided to try the chicken Avacado arepa with garlic aoli . I was so disappointed . I poured the entire little tiny cups of spicy and Avocado sauces and just no flavor. It LOOKED so good but was so bland. My neighbor had some kind of cheese stick that she let me taste and that was very good. I have no idea what it was called and can't find it on the menu The lady taking the order lacked flavor as well. I guess you just have to know what you want. I'm not saying don't try it, just saying what I had did not excite me. On top of it the cost was like $16!

These are the best arepas I have had! I've only had them twice and it's interesting that Azucar Morenas are quite different from the other place I tried. A really good variety to choose from - I went with the pabellon, which has a fried plantain, cheese, black beansand shredded beef inside. The outer "shell" is crunchy and is a nice compliment to the ingredients inside. My only complaint is that it needs a spicy sauce - flavors were so good and I would have loved to have had just an extra kick to take it to the next level. Employees were also very friendly and I definitely recommend this spot in The AMP!

I've been to their location at The Garage on Mass Ave and finally tried it at The Amp. I went a couple times when they were supposed to be open but weren't so that was a bummer. The Amp is still seeming like it's struggling to open and get clientele. Friday lunch = pretty busy (my first visit) but Monday lunch visit I had no wait for my arepa and there were very few people in general at The Amp. Anyways the arepas are great! This is a Venezuelan restaurant and previously I've only had Colombian arepas. My palate is not refined enough to know the difference, but it's good! I love getting the shredded beef with Gouda. I got the plantains once and they had some syrupy sauce over them that I hated. But at the Mass Ave locations I visited a couple times, the sweet plantains (maduros) were better without that syrupy stuff. Anyways, more people should go!

Located inside the AMP at 16 Tech. On my first visit to the AMP, I was looking at all the vendors and this is the one that caught my eye. I used to live in Miami and haven't had arepas in a while. Also, I LOVE fried plantains. I ended up ordered the pabellon, which is white cheese, black beans, plantains and shredded beef in the thick corn pancake (arepa), for $12. It was good except that it needed some salsa or something a little sauce or liquid because the overall effect was a bit dry. But the flavor was otherwise good and my plantains in particular did not disappoint. #yum #ReviewsByRL

The staff at Azucar Morena are so friendly and recognize customers visit-to-visit. The arepas are fresh, and the menu has a variety of options. For freshly made food, the waiting time is very minimal, especially at this location compared to at The Garage. Some of the AMP's vendors close before dinner time, but Azucar Morena is open. Paid parking and free street parking are both available.

At some point, maybe now, maybe millions did years in the future, the world will come to an end. If you've broken out of your COVID shell, get yourself to The Garage for a great meal and a rousing good time. With so many choices, I strongly recommend overeating. While you're there, visit Azucar Moreno for some delicious and (mostly) healthy Venezuelan cuisine in the quick. Azucar Moreno's restaurant is in the coolest, classiest food court in the land. Served by a true Venezuelan chef, the shop offers a smattering of dishes from different regions of the nation. I was hungry on my last visit, and I chose none other than the cachapas, which was a yellow corn pancake stuffed with white cheese, shredded chicken, and lots of veggie fixings. I was concerned when I didn't order two, but one was plenty. Ready in ten minutes, it's a large sandwich, best eaten with a fork -- and it's absolutely delicious. With it, I got a side of pico de gallo, which I felt was too heavy on the onions (and I like those). It gave me a bout of indigestion. Would I eat at Azucar Moreno again? You bet'cha! I'd just skip the pico.

When you find a food you could eat any time, any day.. be afraid. DO NOT go to Azucar Morena or you might get hooked on Arrepas! Consider yourself warned!

I convinced my wife to make a drive downtown to Tech 16 so that we could try some of the new places inside the AMP. We have been watching it via its website and this was our third visit. Since it was approaching lunch time, we each picked a spot that appealed to us and I selected Azucar Morena, a Venezuelan inspired restaurant. It can be found on the north end of the AMP (near the stage and restrooms) The business opted for one of the finished restaurant stalls as well as the standard transport stalls, so there appears to be lots of room for the staff to set up a food line. The order counter is about midway along their space and has an information board nearby on how to order an Arepas that you pick the items. I decided to play it safe and go with one of the predetermined combinations which was called the Reina Pepeada which means "Curvy Queen". The sandwich is served on a rounded white cornmeal biscuit with shredded chicken breast, cilantro and avocado as the primary flavors. The selection came with a side. I opted for the house pico de galo which I then added as it fit onto the sandwich. Really yummy and I found that the chicken, though only lightly seasoned, was good. I picked a sweetened tea which was huge as my beverage. They have a lot of juices available too, but decided to try those on another visit. The sandwich flavors are mild so very approachable to someone unfamiliar with the cuisine. No "heat" worry here. The wait time was about ten minutes, so not too bad. They give you a number with your receipt so you need to stay fairly close to hear them call it out so you can pick up your order. Once you get it, you can sit anywhere in the AMP. Try something different today and give Azucar a try! Review #3934

    Peluda arepa & plantains.

I had a peluda arepa with chimichurri sauce and enjoyed EVERY bite! I also got a side of plantains and ate every piece, despite my intentions to save some for later. Looking forward to trying more items from the menu soon.

Holy Moley, what an amazing lunch! I am used to eating Colombian arepas, but these Venezuelan arepas did not disappoint. The restaurant we went to is located inside the new food hall called the AMP off of Indiana Avenue downtown. They are located in a cute decorated shipping container and you can watch them make the food in front of you. There are a variety of options from vegetarian to chicken to beef including cheese, plantains, and other toppings. As you can see, I ordered the option of chicken, black beans, and plantains without cheese and added avocado sauce. If you are unfamiliar with arepas, they are essentially a thick corn pancake that is cut in half and filled with whatever you choose. The avocado sauce was outstanding and I wish I would have gotten more. The plantains were cooked to perfection and there was plenty of meat on my arepa, so much so, that I ended up eating all that fell out of it with a fork. We will 100% be back several more times as this is a nice taste of home for my husband.

It's just off Allisonville and 96th, with plenty of parking. We could tell right away that there was only one staff member working the register and the grill and the tables (apparently other staff had called off), so we knew there might be a little wait. He kept apologizing, but honestly it did not take that long to get our food. And the food is such a #yum! (Because of a Yelp item, I had a free Pabellon Arepa - it had a really good size portion of shredded beef, beans, cheese, and, my favorite, sweet plantains.) But outside of that, my husband was with me and we ordered more food: The Don Luis bowl (chicken fajita with rice & beans), and a side of fried yuca. We also got a side of tequenos - the delicious little fried cheese sticks wrapped in a thicker dough. Everything was tasty, and we have enough leftovers that I have lunch the next two days! #yum #ReviewsByRL

TLDR: Love it. Visited today for breakfast with a friend, and it wasn't busy when I arrived, but was surprised at how many people arrived as we ate. It was a workday, and I thought there might be some breakfast meetings taking place, but the crowd trickled in a bit later as the morning lingered. Coffee options abound. As do smoothies and 'wellness shots' which aren't my thing but if you'd like a shot of healthy greens and a spice I've never heard of, enjoy! I had black coffee and it tasted better than most breakfast shots. They have a wide variety of lattes and other fancy custom options like the strawberry shortcake latte, etc. Ordered the breakfast burrito (sausage) and it was very good. I think I had the hangover burrito before (same thing but with gravy on top) and would opt for that one again next time. I had the strawberry banana pancakes at a prior visit as well, and remember them fondly. My dining companion had biscuits and gravy and said they were good. He is a man of few words. For dinner, they have a great menu that is 'latin flavors' as they say - everything from traditional Mexican food you'd find elsewhere to Argentinian options and more. They have great food. On a nice day, the patio is great other than the street traffic noise. This is a great option if you're wanting to get away from the other Mexican restaurants in town but still want something along those lines.
