I had a horrendous experience with a botched highlight session from another salon. I called AYA Salon to set up a color consultation to see how it could be fixed. They set me up with their senior color specialist-- Danielle. She was so empathetic and AMAZING. She gave me her recommendations, but asked what I wanted to do ultimately. A year ago I started my journey of going blonde with my very skilled Stylist named Monica who I HIGHLY recommend, her work speaks for itself go check out her page Instagram page : hair_wm When I started I was a virgin brunette and I told Monica that I wanted to be red without having to use bleach. I was super afraid of bleach. Seeing how Monica was super skilled and kept my hair extremely healthy I was convinced to do a big change and decided to do a brown to blonde ombre. Of course playing around with a ombré turned into going more and more blonde. But this did not happen over night. She was super careful and knowledgeable with the process of getting me lighter every session. about 6months into my journey Monica was no longer with AYA and I went to her outside of the salon. The time and money I spent getting my hair from a deep red to a beautiful blonde was all totally worth it because every-time I sat in Monica's chair and left her I felt so fucking fabulous and my hair was just stunning and healthy. I could not believe how healthy my hair was being so blonde! It was shiny, bouncy, sleek and oh so smooth. As I mentioned My maintenance with Monica was pricey but worth every fucking dollar and I highly recommend going to her studio if you can get a spot in her busy books. fast forward to the day I fcking regret with all my heart. I could not get into Monica's chair because her books are always busy and I needed my hair done ASAP for work shots I decided to go back to AYA because they are a "Elegant Salon devoted to innovation and blah blah blah" The MAIN thing I told the stylist Arianna was my goal is to be more blonde than what I am now. I told Arianna, that I have been at this for a year getting lighter and lighter every session. I understand that going blonde is a process and I have been super patient and was finally at a blonde I was super happy with. But as I told Arianna, the goal is blonder. As soon as Arianna took the towel off my head I knew something was wrong, but my hair was wet so I tried not to look in the mirror as she continued to blow dry my hair. As soon as my hair was dry I wanted to fcking break down and cry. "This is brown", I told Arianna and she kept telling me it was a ashy blonde. I kept looking in the mirror like WTF ???Does this girl think I'm a fucking idiot or something? I told her over and over that my hair was brown. She kept trying to convince me it was not. I told her I'm not happy and she said it would lighten. Like one thing I can't stand is someone who feeds you complete BS. If you do something wrong take accountability for it. Feeding someone BS is a bad look on you, your work and the place you represent. I emailed the salon owner immediately She was completely unsympathetic, did not apologize or ask any question. She just sent me a message saying if I can come in Tomorrow at 2:30. The next day I come back in and they make me see Arianna again for a "color cleanse" Arianna takes me to the sink and starts the "color cleanse" she's washing my hair for about 15 mins adding whatever let's me sit and comes back to rinse my hair and than tells me their is a second part to the color cleanse. At this point I'm texting my step mother who is a stylist in Hollywood to ask WTF a color cleanse is. Arianna come back and starts applying the second part to the color cleanse and tells me she's going to let it sit. My head and scalp start to tingle and I realize she's basically giving my head a bleach wash (as my step mother explained to me). I ask Arianna what she's doing and what's she's using and she tells me again it's a color cleanse and that it's a alternative to bleach but it's not bleach. I'm sitting there cooking for another 15 mins and than Arianna washes the bleach out of my hair and tells me someone else is going to condition my hair because she had another client coming in. I told her are we even going to tone my hair because I'm pretty sure my hair was going to be super yellow after letting my hair sit in bleach. She says she's not going to apply a toner because my hair has been through alot of processing and the shampoo she used had a little bit of toner in it. The minute the towel came off my head I was Fcking pissed off. My hair was yellow, dry, shorter and felt super sticky. My hair is totally Fcked up now. The color is awful, there is a bunch of random yellow, orange, brassy stripes all around my head. The fcking texture is horrible now, even when I wash my hair in the shower with conditioner it is hard to get my fingers through. I been having trouble this entire week styling my hair because it is just so sticky and brittle and dry. I've lost inches, my hair is breaking off. My hair is uneven. This Salon and Stylist completely ruined my life. Making the transition to go blonde was such a big life decision. Not to mention the financial commitment you make to maintain the color! read more

Been going to aya for years. See below I've given excellent review in past. Had an appt booked with my usual stylist Elon, then noticed aya had removed the appt without notifying me. I reached out via email to enquire why and got no response. Called the salon and they said Elon moved away. No apology for canceling my appt without a notification. They recommended Michelle so I made an appt. Also made an appt for my daughter at same time with another stylist. Well last minute they told daughter she needed to come 15 mins early. I called and explained we were coming together and wanted appts at same time. They assured me it basically would be the same time. Nope. I had to wait 30 mins past my appt time by which time daughter was nearly done. Someone took me for shampoo because stylist was running so late , but that meant stylist who I'd never met never got to look at my hair dry or go over what I wanted. Gal washing hair was lovely (sorry don't recall name) then Michelle comes over doesn't even introduce self, or apologize for being late, pours cold water on my head and is kinda rough. I then explain what I'm looking for, keeping the length with a bit of face framing and soft layers and a bang trim. Well good grief, she cut my bangs way back into the side of my head in a way I didn't even know was possible. I have layers several inches apart. I look like I have a toupe on top of my head or something. The whole thing is a complete mess. I came out looking like a 70s male rock star. It will take me a full year or more to grow out some of these insane "layers". Wtf. And my daughter had to sit and wait for ages for me. During the cut Michelle made multiple unnecessarily bitchy comments. We talked about the weather and I mentioned being in the uk this summer and she said twice something like "no need to brag". She kept calling herself an "old lady" when I'm clearly significantly older than her. She made zero attempt to get to know me or my hair and seemed to have zero interest in building a new client relationship. This place is NOT cheap and I would have had an experience ten times better at supercuts. Not sure wtf I was paying for. Oh and the gal who did the shampoo was so nice to ask if I'm sensitive to scents and I told her I am. Michelle then went and not only used products without asking me but came spraying something very strong all over my hair and face at the end for "texture" without asking giving me a full on asthma attack. I had to go straight home and wash everything out of my hair. I honestly left that salon wondering what I've done to piss them off so badly that they set me up for the worst haircut I ever had. I've been going there for years, given literally thousands of $ to them, bought their products, tipped decently, brought my daughter, didn't complain when they canceled my appt or were super late, and I get treated like absolute shit. Oh and the icing on the cake!!! Despite waiting 45 mins for appt all they offered was tea and water and my daughter says after, did you notice everyone else was being given mimosas?! wtf aya. Never again . ETA the owner emailed me to offer to have another stylist adjust my cut , no offer of a refund. Given that Michelle cut my hair from shoulder length to literally a 3 inch bowl around the top of my head I'm not letting anyone else there touch it. No apology for her lateness. Interesting that there were no reviews of Michelle here but 2 have popped up since my review a few days ago raving about her. My hair would beg to differ. read more

I was struggling to get the color I wanted at another salon, so I called Aya in a panic after a rather green toned color was applied at this other place. They asked for pics and details and when I arrived two days later to for a free consultation with Hillary, she had already spent time planning on how to fix my color and had pictures to show me. I loved that she took the time before I even was there! Then she squeezed me into her calendar a week later and my hair color has never been prettier!! I've been going to Aya for about 6 years now and seeing Hilary for my cut and color. I've always been a fan of Aveda and transitioned to Berkeley after going to a few different salons in San Francisco where I always hit traffic and parking was expensive. Aya is a lovely, inviting salon that smells delightfully like Aveda and Hilary feels like a friend I'm catching up with at each appointment. I leave my appointments with a bounce in my step, feeling better about life than when I first walked in.
