I had a very disappointing experience with Rick's work. We've had ongoing issues, including roof leaks and dry rot that was left unaddressed. Communication was poor -- my calls weren't returned until I filed a complaint with the California State License Board. Interactions since then have felt combative and unprofessional, including being talked down to and yelled at while I was trying to calmly resolve the problems. Award roofing came to fix a roof leak and stated if it continues to leak after their fix, they would keep fixing at no additional cost or they would issue a refund. The leak continued and they noted a team would be out in the next 3 weeks. 4 weeks passed and no one had stopped by. I called and I received the general voicemail. It has been almost 3 years of constant calling and leaving voicemails, and I have still not received a response from them. I find this very unprofessional. read more

In 9/2019, at a going market rate, Rick Ward (Owner of Award Roofing) replaced the entire roof of our house in Glen Ellen. By 8/2024, we began noticing cracks in the ceiling of our family Sunroom, and apparent water damage in our Guest Bathroom. Ward's first remedial visit to the house was in 9/2024 to discuss both issues. He denied responsibility for the Sunroom damages, including approximately 126 protruding nails across the 500 sq. ft. white ceiling. However, he did agree to patch a small section of roof over the Guest Bathroom. On Ward's second visit (10/17/25), the Homeowners again complained about the Sunroom which by now had large ugly ceiling cracks (along the roof edge) and obvious water leakage into the room itself. (We also told Ward that we had recently met with six other reputable roofing contractors/estimators to "audit" Ward's work and estimate our damages to date.) We asked Ward to simply fix all the cracks and leaks, which were still "well-covered" by his Ten-Year Workmanship Guarantee. He verbally agreed he would replace all of the damaged ceiling boards and remove all of the surrounding rotten wood. The Homeowners viewed this as a sign of good faith and progress. Ward had earlier asserted (without any evidence) that the Sunroom damages/leakages were clearly the fault of the careless Homeowners who, he inferred, were not smart or disciplined enough to clean their own gutters! Not factual or very diplomatic. On his third remedial visit (11/5/25), Ward looked at the Guest Bathroom where the Homeowners directed him to cut out two pieces of wallboard from the ceiling and sidewall, respectively. No signs of water or any more black mold (good). Moving over to the Sunroom, Ward again focused on whether the ceiling holes and leaks were ACTUALLY his fault or not. Rather than just FIXING what he and the Homeowners verbally agreed on 10/17/25, he began to "more carefully" look at the gutters along the roof leakage area. He then asserted (without evidence) that there were two or three gutter screws that were "suspicious" and "needed to be caulked". Without producing any evidence or himself having professional gutter (versus roofing) qualifications, he proclaimed that: "the true source of the leaks is suspect". In fact, as the original Contract specifically stated: "Award Roofing expressly refrains from guaranteeing caulking of any kind and repairs to gutters." With language like that, the Homeowners certainly did not want Ward meddling with their gutters. And over the prior two years, he (and our independent roofing and gutter consultants) never once mentioned the gutters as the cause of our Sunroom cracks and leakages. When the Homeowners then said he seemed to be again trying to escape his Ten-Year Workmanship Guarantee responsibilities, Ward turned bright red and became scarily angry. Shouting "That's it, I won't put up with this!", he stomped off the roof, packed his things, got into his truck, and said he was now "finished with the project". He said he would do this "the hard way in court" and smugly added: "It will not be my first time". P.S. In a separate email of 11/25/25, Ward proceeded to blame the Homeowners for never having told him about the roughly 126 protruding (and now very rusty) nails across our white Sunroom ceiling ("I would have fixed it for you six years ago if you had made me aware of the issue.") This last statement was even more remarkable since the Homeowners had shown him the obvious damages during his first remedial visit in 9/2024. At that time, he first denied that his workers even did it, shrugged it off, and did not (then) offer to repair the damage. He later changed that position on 10/17/2025 after our outside "auditors" had all chuckled at the "rookie mistakes". Homeowners Advice: Buyer beware, Buyer prepare! read more

Rick is rude, and he will burn you...he didn't tell me that he was going to sublet the gutter work out. The gutter folks put a gawdy looking piece of metal on the roof to act as a water diverter, instead of putting gutter on the corner of the house. When I told Rick that I wasn't happy with it because it looked awful, and that if I knew that he was going to sublet the gutter work out, and that my neighbor got the same gutter job, from the same company for $2,000 instead of $3,500 I wouldn't have agreed to it. Rick then transferred the subject saying, "Look at your front lawn, it looks like crap"! I told him that comment was uncalled for, and had nothing to do with his shoddy roof & gutter job. So basically he just put the additional $1,500 right in his pocket off the sublet gutter job. Also, I pointed out a crooked piece of metal flashing at the very focal point of the front of the house. And, I told him that I asked his roofer's to fix it, but they didn't. Rick blew me off on that concern as well, saying "you can just paint over that". He could have just took his ladder out and fixed it, instead he took his payment for the crappy job he did, and left in an angry huff. Very unprofessional, aggressive, & poor attitude. He acted like he wanted to fight. I would not recommend him to anybody. The guy is a rip off, and was very disrespectful. Karma will catch up with him. I signed contract with this clown on 12/12/23, he didn't start the job until 04/10/24. read more

Super nice and flexible guy!! We had a home (lost it in the October fires) that had solar panels and water heating equipment on it. Rick worked with the solar guy to coordinate the removal of the solar equipment and then the replacement of those panels. He was absolutely great and really made that situation less stressful. Four words. Lazy and doesn't care ! Rick Ward from Award Roofing turned up late after being recommended to me by our neighbor. Our house has a roof size possibly twice the size of our neighbor. From the moment he turned up he was very negative, roof too big, roof too high, continued to try to see every downside of the job without even stepping one foot on a ladder to have a look...I was dumb founded by his terrible attitude...I even said to him : " hey :) ? Are you trying to talk yourself out of the job, you have not even had a look ? He said "well its just alot of work" ??!! Really ! I replied : Well you are not doing it for free so..... He went on to just shrug and said "you know we already have a lot of work" - meaning I do not need this. Wow ! and sadly this is what we have to deal with today. Lazy contractors like Rick who only pick the easy jobs . I am actually grateful I told him not to waste my time any further and walked away. Can you imagine what this guy would be like if heaven forbid your roof job becomes difficult and needs additional work that he didn't plan on. He might bail half way through ! His last statement to me of " I've been in the business 20 years blah blah blah "... well something is not right as today You do not care to provide customer service , or help people if the job looks too hard for you or maybe there is something else to it ? Maybe he doesn't have the right insurance to protect his workers when going on an extra high roof ? Who knows, it was very strange...consumers be aware about this one, do your homework.
