I had never heard of nor tried Indonesian ice cream until we went to Awan after having dinner nearby. They are a naturally plant-based ice cream shop with a very creative vibe and excellent flavors. They offer a variety of seasonal flavors, many of which incorporates different spices and ingredients often found within the region. I got to sample a couple including hojicha and mango while we were visiting. Everything tasted fresh, creamy, and tantalizing. It doesn't matter whether it's plant based or not- this is just really delicious ice cream that anyone deserves to try. The shop itself is fairly small but they do have some standing room with tables if you want to enjoy your ice cream inside. If it's not cold, I'd say it's better to hang out outside.

Awan is a modern ice cream concept that blends Americanized techniques with Asian flavors within a cave-like interior. The menu is not too exhaustive, but it has most of the primary flavors you'd find at other places + some other fruity ones like passionfruit and lychee. The texture is smooth, and it's the perfect plan to go here during a hot summer day. One of LA's best :)

Cute little ice cream shop with window service. I love that it's dairy free since I'm lactose intolerant so I love this alternative.

Oh my goodness. We are STOKED to have stumbled on Awan! The gentleman that helps us-- was to patient with the kiddos letting them try flavors. It's a small little walk through counter with very limited seating. We loved and appreciated all of the Indo flavors. The matcha was the best earthy matcha we've had in ice cream. The mandarin was SUPER refreshing and a crowd pleaser. The sesame was also super tasty and unique from most other black sesame ice cream. The ice cream base was so silky for coconut. The kiddos loved the Oreo-- but the parentals really enjoyed all the specialty flavors. Do yourself a favor, if you're close, stop by, and try all the seasonal because they surely won't disappoint.

Let me start by saying I'm an Awan Day 1. I remember when it was just the little window in WeHo and the owner was serving the desserts himself! I've been an unpaid spokesperson ever since because I genuinely believe Awan is unmatched. Everywhere I travel, I'm always searching for great--not just good--not ice cream, and Awan is still one of my favorites. That said, today's experience was disappointing. Between 6 and 7 p.m., my friends and I stopped by while I'm visiting from NorCal. The gentleman working was on his laptop when we walked up. We stood there waiting until I finally called out for service. When he came over, he seemed short, annoyed, and honestly acted like we were inconveniencing him just by being there. I was still friendly, but it left a bad impression. If you work there, please don't make customers feel like they're bothering you because you have to do your job. The flavors, as always, were incredible. That's why I'm still giving 3 stars. I'm genuinely happy Awan has expanded to more locations because they deserve the success. I just hope this location doesn't fall into the stereotypical "too cool for you" Melrose customer service vibe. The not ice cream is exceptional--let the service match it. Be friendly. It makes all the difference.

Love the unique flavors they have here and love it even more bc it's all non dairy!!!! (Shout out to my lactose intolerant kings and queens) also love how each Awan store has the most interesting architecture and vibe. They only let you sample a couple flavors so choose wisely. Their flavors change pretty often but they do have a few flavors that are a staple there. My siblings like to get pints and drive it all the way back to Orange County (yes, seriously) I can never say no to Awan if I'm in the area.

One of the best ice creams I've had! The gaviota strawberry and chocolate Oreo are amazing, texture is unique. Good service even late at night , and the interior looks cool.

My favorite vegan ice cream in LA! I've tried their West Hollywood location and I'm so glad they've added one to Venice! Their flavors are so unique with very thoughtfully sourced ingredients, and the portions are perfect. I highly recommend any of their fruit flavors, the gaviota strawberry is divine and their pineapple pandan is the perfect balance of tart and creamy! I like how none of their flavors are too sweet either, and even though they do use a coconut cream base there isn't a super strong or overpowering coconut flavor. There's little standing tables inside and a bench outside, but this is definitely more of a to-go window with limited seating.

AWAN is one of my favorite ice cream places! It's high quality Indonesian ice cream that's vegan and delicious (and I'm not even vegan)!! Their seasonal flavors are ALWAYS worth getting even if it's $1 extra. I personally love all their fruit flavors when I'm a chocolate and milk ice cream kinda gal so this says a lot. They have the best unique flavors rotating from their seasonal menu. I really love the Venice location because they had all the flavors to try whereas other locations they run out fast. My favorite was the: Shinko Pear and Ginger (5/5): It had a sweet, fruity shinko Asian pear base that was tangy and tasted like butterscotch undertones with the creaminess. I loved that it has tiny bits of crystallized ginger that went SO well with the refreshing and creamy pear base. Was a perfect pick me up to satisfy my sweet tooth.

No offense but when I think vegan I don't necessarily think Ice cream, but Awan definitely made this work! (You can taste test all the flavors!) I had Balinese Vanilla and for a vegan, dairy-free ice cream, the texture was insanely rich and creamy. You still get that smooth, indulgent feel without it tasting artificial or watered down like a lot of dairy-free spots. There's a slight coconut aftertaste from the base, but it's subtle and actually complements the flavor instead of overpowering it. The Indonesian-inspired concept makes it feel unique compared to your average ice cream shop. Definitely worth checking out if you want something different that still tastes legit.

Finally got to try Awan after hearing about the hype and uniqueness of the flavors. Flavors were definetly made with real ingredients and You can't find these flavors anywhere, definetly very unique. I think they rotate flavors. The flavors today weren't the same ones I saw on yelp before. They let you sample. Tried shinko pear and ginger. It had the sweetness of the pear paired with a touch of ginger. The ginger lingers in the after taste. I didn't get this one but I like the concept. The Thai tea and black sesame butter was pretty good as well. I'd say the black sesame butter was the dominant flavor. You still get that Thai tea flavor, but not as bold as the black sesame Strawberry had a bit of tart to it, mentioned it was organic. For a price of a single scoop is $8, which is kind of expensive. Also parking in the neighborhood is a bit hard, good if you get lucky finding street parking, but if not you might have to walk a little further The workers were nice let you try all the flavors if needed so that you can select the one that fits your taste. They were really nice and understand that these aren't your typical ice cream flavors so they let you try as much as you need to pick your favorite.

Delicious vegan ice cream! I've been wanting to try Awan for a while now and after seeing the collab with REM beauty, I had to check it out. I went on a Sunday morning and there wasn't a line. Staff were super friendly with helping me sample and choose flavors. The Love Spell flavor was super delicious. It was the perfectly blend of fruity and tart. Overall, great spot for a treat!

Where have you been all my life Awan? Awan has officially become my go-to for something sweet, creamy and delicious. The Venice space is slightly small but it's fine. The merch in my opinion is a tad overpriced and won't be buying anything soon except maybe some pints of ice cream. In terms of the actual ice cream. The scoops are actually pretty generous and it's like elevated in terms presentation etc. I happen to be vegan but if you aren't you simply cannot argue with me over how creamy and tasty it is. I'm a vanilla lover and I found the vanilla to be one of the best vegan vanillas I've ever had. The pineapple is also amazing. The strawberry wasn't life changing but all the flavors are just so creamy and decadent in their own way; that you can count on. To note, there is also a little window you go to to get your ice cream, which can be annoying if it's crowded and you literally can't get over there. In my opinion they could just hand it to you, but sure. All in all I want and Awan in every city. Obsessed :)

However, we walked in a little after 3:00 PM and found out we couldn't order smoothies (which end at 3:00) or breakfast items (which end much earlier at 11:00). For an "all-day cafe," that felt like a bit of a misrepresentation. Since it was very, very hot outside, I was disappointed that they were serving lukewarm water. Unfortunately, there was no vegan pizza on the menu, but our first waiter was very, very nice and friendly, and he had the kitchen accommodate us by omitting the cheese, substituting olive oil for chili oil, and adding spinach. The pizza turned out to be very thin, but yummy, and my party also enjoyed the ceviche. I had an iced coconut coffee that was absolutely delicious. After our first waiter ended his shift, our second waiter, Mike H., took over the table and never checked on us not even one single time after someone dropped off the food. When a small issue came up with one of the plates, he was just so nonchalant and dismissive, and Mike didn't add to the ambiance of the place at all. Fortunately, I believe it was a manager who then stepped in with a smile and addressed the issue, which was really nice. Aside from that unfortunate service experience, the food and drinks were tasty, but the misleading menu hours, lukewarm water on a hot day, and inattentive waiter definitely left room for improvement.

I had the pasta Bolognese and my friend had the fish and chips which we shared and we both loved each of them. He is a legitimate wine connoisseur. I asked a couple of ridiculous questions, yet he answered them so politely with his highly knowledgable answer. He was such a wonderful SOMM as well as a very friendly and personable server... with a wonderful sense of humor. So. I want people who are not gluten-free to know it's good to try to try this place. Everything is not only tasty but beautifully presented and the room is so cozy. If you're worried about trying gluten-free don't be. I asked Cameron's opinions on the food and I'll tell you he did not steer us wrong. Highly recommended by both of us; My friend with Celiac disease and myself who professors to be 'normal' (not gluten free). Oh.. we could not fit in dessert, but are very sad not to have been able to. There was a a beautiful display of luscious looking desserts that we will also have to go back for tonight, we must try to make room for one this evening or at least take a couple to go. Enjoy it!
