I found the most adorable baby bib recently as a present for a newborn. It was green and had owls - how cute. In the past I have bought presents for people who I was visiting abroad, from woollen scarves to woollen blankets. And in the present I buy dinner, bring it home and serve it up in no time. This morning, I enjoyed brunch at Avoca with a couple girlfriends. We rolled in at noon and had no problem getting a table for three (though if you come after 1, you might have to wait a bit). Our table was made from an old wine barrel and contained a plaque that read: "Good Food, Good Friends, Good Times." I thought the saying was so cute and apropos that I snapped a photo. Upon closer inspection, I realized that the fourth word was spelled as "freinds" (remember, "i" before "e" except after "c!"). Still cute though. I ordered the herbed wild & field mushrooms on toasted cheese bread with roasted cherry tomatoes (so many mushrooms, so much deliciousness) and a cappuccino (the camera came out again because it had an awesome smiley face in the foam). I also stole a bite of my pal's french toast with crispy American style bacon, and this Californian was very pleased. After brunch, I headed downstairs and realized that I've become my mother. Why, you may ask? Because I left the store with a garlic press and silicone egg poachers. All jokes aside, this store does have an incredible assortment of kitchen gadgets, clothes, jewelry, and toys. I'll be back again, Avoca! read more

I love the shop - every single nook and cranny - but, the basement cafe is where the real 'treats' are! After you've filled your shopping bag with unique items for the home or yourself, head downstairs for a very reasonable and exceptionally tasty bite to eat! We ordered the fish/potato cakes and the smoked chicken caesar wrap. This totaled only about nine euro! And, let me tell you, it was a fabulous meal for two - on the cheap! The dining area is first-come, first-serve and a bit tight; but, it's just a lovely spot to meet a friend for a bite to eat and some conversation while surrounded by all sorts of mouth-watering goodies... in fact we enjoyed some tasty samples of Olvi pesto and Olvi black olive paste courtesy of the 'sample lady' and stocked up on these before we departed. Avoca is somewhere I could happily spend a couple of hours and a couple of hundred or even thousand Euro, had I the time and money, the inclination is very present. I find the café, which I understand to be the downstairs part, a little confusing. Allow me to explain, when you come down the stairs you go over to a counter and place your order, then you are expected to know to go to the very far end of the counter to pick up your food, then navigate your way around the grocery section to the tables. However, I wouldn't change it for anything as it is part of the charm of the Avoca café and I adore sitting amongst the recipe books, mars bar squares and pasta of various shapes, colours and sizes. Another thing I love about the Avoca café is that you are free to take as much tap water or milk to have with your lunch as you see fit. At last onto the food, which though pricey is worth the treat. Soups are always so creamy and different, served with a choice of breads, quiches are yummy and served with a nice little side salad and different dressing depending on quiche choice. There's also lots of other choices, salads and goodies, such as the mars bar squares I referred to earlier, big cookies, meringues you could dive into and various other things that will help you put your dentist's kids through college, but sooo worth it! read more

Christmas is on it's way, so buying gifts is on my mind. Avoca is the sort of store that takes a lot of the stress out of present-buying though. It's a real one-stop shop if you want to get some curious and unique gifts. Plus they cater for most of the obsessions of the modern Irish person. Kitchen gadgets, check. Cute gardening tools, check. Tea and coffee bits and pieces, check. Kids toys with a slightly pretentious educational aspect, oh yeah. For years I've always popped in during the week to Avoca for my morning scone fix. The best berry scones with a sugary top taste amazing with some dairy gold butter (drool). The salads, although abit expensive compared to most places, are still the freshest and most tasty salads you can get in a cafe in my opinion. The cakes also A++! They have a sandwhich counter downstairs that makes sambos and rolls and you pick your meat (rotisserie chicken, roast beef, honey roasted ham, pork with crackling) I've never tried them yet but they look And smell amazing. I've had their new juices that have loadsa good greens in them and they were really refreshing. If I had tons of money I'd be here all the time for food and the beautiful things that await upstairs (home appliances, clothes, jewellery) read more

This is the store I would create if I were creative enough. There is domestic charm wherever you look, and look I did. Then I bought. There are several levels of goods separated by short stairs, and apparently a cafe on the bottom, though I didn't enter. There is also a surprise terrace upstairs with outdoor effects like birdcages and trellises. The highlight is the mix and match porcelain on the third floor. This is seriously an idea I had a few years ago, but Avoca's people actually did something about it. That's it in a nutshell: this is the store that does the legwork for you, and for a few euros (well, a few more than a few) you can take the credit for an adorable, inspired home. I bought some gifts there but cannot tell you about them because they have not been given yet and I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise. Avoca is kind of an hybrid trade: half restaurant, half store. We only went to the shop (and apparently local people know this place for the food!) that makes me think a little bit of a small Urban Outfitters without being one ... There is a little bit of everything: gadgets, books, various gift boxes, accessories and cooking utensils, fashion from small productions ... Do not hesitate to come here if you are in the neighborhood and test the food (and let me know how it was!) because it seems that it is very good. We probably missed an opportunity here! read more

Had a really pleasant experience upstairs in the restaurant. I went for breakfast and although the menu isn't incredibly extensive, they had some really solid offerings and had trouble choosing between the poached eggs on sourdough toast w/ avocado & smoked salmon or the pancakes with fresh blueberries. I'm a bit of a berry snob after spending some time on an organic farm which, despite it's peculiar decision to ignore child labour laws, had the most flavourful berries I've ever eaten. Once you've written with a luxurious pen, it's very difficult to go back to a standard ball point, and I found that after tasting that farm's blueberries I now can't really take your average one seriously. I went with the poached eggs. The poached eggs were nice although one was slightly overdone. I didn't have a problem with this but I could imagine a fan of the ooze not being impressed. The avocado was chunky, oily and shimmery with great seasoning. I was a little let down by the sourdough as I expected it to really pack some flavour, but it fell a little short. The roast tomatoes, my least favourite part of any breakfast, were actually really quite tasty. The salmon was on a side plate, which I also really appreciated. The atmosphere was really nice and although the large place was nearly at maximum capacity it wasn't too loud. The high ceilings and big windows give it a very airy feel and I found the ambience to be relaxed and easy going. The filtered coffee was great too. Staff were friendly, attentive. Also, I should note that we had no trouble getting a table for two at 10:45 on a Saturday morning. read more

Avoca brings out mixed feelings in me. I kind of feel like I shouldn't like it. It's pricey and probably designed to appeal to tourists. You have to walk through an Aladdin's cave of tempting pretty things to get to the upstairs café and really risk a major blow-out on fancy bits and pieces. Despite all this....I really like this café! It's busy...but they somehow manage to find you a seat quickly regardless. I've gone with between one and five others and didn't have to wait. The food is fresh and very tasty. Soups taste wholesome and the bread has that just baked texture and taste. Salads are crisp and filling. Scones are divine. My last trip included a mixed berry one which was spicy and served with jam and cream. Mmmm :-) There is a selection of delicious cakes to indulge in. If you're on a diet it may be best to close your eyes while passing the display. You WILL want them. Staff are friendly and efficient. It's not cheap but is a very pleasant place to meet up for a little treat.. Very happy to see takeaway soup, scones, bread and salads on the ground floor. No escape from the deliciousness! Epitome of fashion in the heart of Dublin! This store is like an Anthropolgie and Sur la Table mixed together. We were in Dublin for a week and I walked by this store daily. I went in three times and finally purchased a set of 6 espresso mugs with matching saucers. The prices are a little steep (hence the comparison to the two mentioned stores) but it's really one of the most unique shops in the area. I couldn't walk away from it without buying anything. While I like the store itself (although a tad bit overpriced on their clothing...), the reason I come here quite regularly is their Brunch! A little bit hidden on the third floor, they have a Café that serves Lunch during the week and Brunch on the Weekends. Everything here is prepared fresh, and the portions are more than generous. Whether you feel like a Full Irish Breakfast or just some (delicious and creamy!) Porridge, there's something for everyone on the menu. Prices are reasonable and great value for what you get; €8.65 for a BIG portion of scrambled eggs on homemade brown bread, served with Rocket and Tomatoes is pretty good if you ask me. I also love that you get freshly squeezed Orange Juice here as opposed to some places that serve you the "Innocent" branded OJ. Service here is usually good and super friendly, although it can sometimes take a while to ask for the bill if they're super busy. Generally, they tend to be quite packed on the weekends so be here early or reserve a table. If you come here on a Saturday you should know that they switch to their Lunch menu at 11.30 am so make sure to be here before that if you want Breakfast. Also, it gets pretty noisy here - lots of families with kids come here for Brunch, so if you're looking for a quiet place to Brunch at to cure your Hangover, this is not the place for you. read more

I've seen some photos of food at Avoca before, but never realized it was also a store. Today, as I was in the neighborhood I walked in front of this shop and decided to get in. As soon as I stepped inside this store I enjoyed it. I love those kind of places where everywhere you look everything looks so cute. I always want to buy nearly everything in it, and I think it's just the perfect spot to buy present for a whole family. I'm really sad that I did not know this store before christmas thought... Definitely going to come back here next time I have to find a present idea. Or buy some new stuff for my own kitchen, since all they have is very very cute ! Their bathroom products looks very good too and smell amazingly good, can't wait to try some ! The clothe section is definitely not my style thought, except the scarves that looks awesome and seems to be from a very good quality. Also, I was really happy to find out that they had Dr Coy's products, those gluten and dairy free chocolate bars are just sooooo good and so tasty !! This is a great store with all sorts of knick knacks, stationery, jewellery, kitchenware, clothes and toys. However, there is also a lovely restaurant on the top floor which is good for lunch or brunch. My friend and I had the burger and chips and the organic meat was excellent, as were the chunky chips and condiments (aioli, onions and ketchup). We also had homemade lemonade and a carrot cake and a mascarpone tart. With service of 10% the bill was approximately €44 I think. The service was good - nothing special. There's lots of Irish fare on the menu - the fish pie looked particularly good. You can have a full Irish breakfast too or just a scone and tea. The city centre location is handy and the room itself is bright and airy. Worth a look, but get there early as it was very busy by 1.45 on Sunday when we were leaving. read more

I'm not sure where to start, this has been my favorite store since I moved to Dublin. It's always part of my Dublin tour for out-of-town guests. It's so fun to browse, and way too tempting to buy. They have really nice soaps, and are known for their wool scarves, blankets and other woolen items. It's the perfect store to get any girl in your life a nice gift. Not to mention there is a deli downstairs with delicious snacks, treats, sandwichs, and baked good. And, a restaurant on the top floor. Any Avoca store has to be judged as a full experience encompassing its cafe, its fashion and household furnishings section, as well as its tantalising food pantry. Based on the sum of all parts I think it deserves 4 stars, but to rate each facet individually might deliver varying results depending on your own predisposition for all things pastel and fluffy. As pointed out by other reviewers, Avoca is really selling a "lifestyle", one that does feel a little privelaged and perhaps not to everyone's tastes either. You could easily spend an hour just walking around though. There are enough interesting, homely things to catch your attention: lavish soaps and toiletries, pretty hand-carved bird feeders and garden lanterns, scented candles, knitted cardigans, scarves and gloves, wooden childrens toys, amusing books about the challenges of being over 50, scented candles, recipe books, exotic teas and coffees, scrumptious confectionary, kitchen ware, scented candles.....etc, etc. Werther you BUY anything or not is another story, as it's grossly expensive. €5.00 for a bar of soap, expensive. But they do make lovely gifts. The cafe serves organic, home-madey delights of which the most enjoyable are the scones, served warm with cream and jam. Huge plates of salad and couscous, moderately expensive quiches and wraps abound. If you just want to bypass everything else and stop for a coffee, this is a perfectly acceptable place to do it, just be prepared to walk up 4 flights of stairs. It is also worth noting that there are several Avoca stores within the Dublin and Wicklow region. The Avoca Handweavers of Kilmacanogue and the Avoca in Powerscourt Gardens, Enniskerry, are easily the most magical of the lot, owed largely to the amazingly beautiful surroundings in which they are situated. However Suffolk St. Avoca certainly provides a cosy haven for shoppers on a rainy day and deserves a visit. read more

A delicious healthy spot, great for lunch! My fiancé, my cousin's wife and her 11 month old daughter found this place one day as we were walking around window shopping in Dublin. Our waitress was a pleasure, she was from Italy and was the sweetest! We got light lunches, I got the crab salad and my cousin's wife got a salad with chicken. This review is for the basement cafe. As most people know Avoca's food is delicious and generous with the portion sizes. It is also a little more expensive than I'd normally spend on lunch during the week. Having said that the choices of sandwiches, salads, quiches, fish cakes and more are wonderful, large and appetizing to look at as well as eat. They also have tasty treats to take away or eat there. The basement serves also as the place to take away dinners, soups, and baked goods so if that's what you're in Avoca for head to the basement. Word of warning though... I work a late shift once a week and get my lunch/dinner break at 4pm which is awkward. As a treat to myself I went to grab some take away food in the basement. Avoca is a lovely store with a lot of unique Irish goods. They stock lots of pretty home and kitchenware, books, children's toys and some great gift items. I'd say anyone would love a present from Avoca! They have a dining room in the basement that serves some really tasty healthy salads, sandwiches, quiche as well as a few preserves such as jam. Everything tastes really nice and the quality is high. The restaurant upstairs is a little different, mainly serving breakfast/ brunch meals, but they do have 2 or 3 lunch items. The best thing is the soup and desserts though, really yummy! Although it can be a little on the pricy side, it's still affordable. Expect to wait in a queue if you go on a Saturday around lunch time. read more

I agree with Melanie that there are some fantastic things in Avoca, but I find that a lot of the items are overpriced. For example, the wellies cost twice as much here as they would in a large department store. Maybe the prices are higher because the customers who shop here are mostly tourists. The food that the deli sells downstairs tastes great. However, what they charge is ridiculous. I'm convinced that the deli is for people who don't know how to cook. I mean, if you know how to make chutney or how to bake an apple tart then you would waste your money here. Plus, the homemade stuff would probably tastes better. The times that I have been to Avoca I have never found the staff to be particularly friendly. The sales assistants are mainly behind the till or restocking merchandise. It would be nice to get greeted or to have someone offer to help you. Nonetheless, I'm giving this shop a 3 out 5 stars because their stuff is original and arty. Also, I once bought my mother a beautiful mohair multicoloured blanket here and to this day she shows it to everyone telling them that it's from Ireland. read more

Avoca has one of the most inviting shop fronts in Dublin, in my opinion. I LOVE checking out the stuff here, but I try not to venture inside too often, because a lot of that stuff is way beyond my budget. I love the way everything seems to be placed haphazardly around the store, but it still manages to look fantastic. Whoever designs the shop displays is obviously very good at their job! The shop is spread out over several levels, and it's so cool how the stock manages to weave its way up staircases and to all levels of the shop, up to the cafe. Came here just at 11:59 and was confused when the waitress came over right away asking what we wanted saying that we had to order then. We went back and forth a few times before she finally said 'the kitchen is changing over from breakfast to lunch, you will be the last order'. Would have been nice to know when we were seated or been the first thing she said.... I'm pretty sure that the scrambled eggs were 6 eggs--who can eat that much? Great value for the price, though! The side salad and tomatoes were great tasting too--but the tomatoes were connected to the vine making it difficult to eat. Friend got the Full Irish breakfast which came with about 3 eggs and 5 strips of bacon! Also a side salad, tomatoes and mushrooms--we said it was the healthiest Irish breakfast ever. OJ was great as well. Got carrot cake for desert (after not finishing my 6 eggs) which was amazing. Fresh cream with it as well. That I finished. So, the downstairs store is adorable, and while I truly wish I could buy all the cute little trinkets and dresses it has to offer, it is simply out of my price-range. That being said, it's still a great place to browse around, especially since... THE UPSTAIRS CAFE IS AN ABSOLUTE DELIGHT! (Sorry for the caps) But this place truly calls for caps. I went there for a lovely brunch with a few friends from university. We immediately felt as if we'd been invited to someone's house for a tea party. The decor of the cafe perfectly mirrors the clothing products they sell - trendy, classy, adorable. Our waiter was so accommodating (for those who don't know, four uni students take FOREVER to make a decision on what they're going to eat), and while the prices were a bit north of my normal budget, there were definitely deals (such as the soup of the day) that made the meal completely doable. Plus, the food was so tasty! You'd pay the same (or more) for some crappy dish in a touristy Temple Bar pub. I ordered: the soup of the day - a delicious mushroom cream soup a coconut, pineapple, and other medley of fruits smoothie and a delicious chocolate raspberry dessert Those courses, paired with the complementary cucumber and mint infused water, made this meal one of the best I've had in quite a while. The presentation was absolutely so elegant! (yeah, I instagrammed my food, judge away). Everything was scrumptious. I can't wait to return to this heavenly, little spot! P.S. We came for the scones, we stayed for the lunch. The minced lamb pitas was to die for. The portions were so huge that we didn't even have dinner that night. The scones was the best in Ireland, and we were extremely impressed with them. The wait can be long as it gets really packed but its worth it. Avoca always makes me think of a desperate house wife exploding and her guts n other bits transforming into this pretty in pastel store. Really, no joke, everything in this store is beautiful in it's pastel pink, purple, and green colors. It has everything from over priced clothes (49 euros for a thin tank top?!) to tea pots, dishes, books, soaps, bath salts, candles, notebooks, scarves, jewelry (my last purchase was a bling-bling shiny ring for 28 euro) to stain remover (grandma's secret). It has a cookware section, where I bought a kitchen timer that sucked, but two silicone ice trays that turned out to be marvelous. They have a kids section up stairs, and a little garden you can walk around in past the kids section, and let's not forgot about the cafe down stairs. Now to be fair I've never eaten at the cafe, but I've purchased some of their cheese/breads, and pre-made pastas, all of which were delicious, but just as good as Marks and Spencer (as in, nothing too special). All in all I REALLY like this store,SO IF I were a desperate house wife, I THEN could afford to shop here....most of the time I go in to see the pretty things that are overpriced and I can't really afford. Ahhhhh Avoca! The smell of freshly made bread wafting through throughout the 6+ storey building while you sift through their goodies. Brownies? Yes. Kitchen utensils? You betcha. Kids toys? Of course. Nick-nack books? THEY HAVE IT ALL!!! Avoca is an absolute must for our overseas friends. And almost every Irish man, woman or child resonates with this Irish power house. Locations at Suffolk street, kilmacanogue, Powerscourt and along the N7*. The staff are the best in the business, and I get the impression that they really enjoy working there. Was brought here by a friend who sometimes thinks expensive means great, but when got me into the women's store I was confused, we kept climbing up until we reached the cafe. (Still kept my doubts why he brought me here). Staff where very courteous and happy, tap on the shoulder and welcome lads I saw a lot of French fries in every table and some salads (still ugh, okay¡) Menu was concise and clear, ordered the toonsbridge halloumi salad. (With the reservations of "why am I here???" My nose was still up waiting to show some disdain, which was terrible of me) How deliciously mixed, I know it is only a salad, but most of my days, that is what I eat, so I was so pleasantly surprised of having a salad with a variety of flavors without fatty dressings or other things which could turn it all the way to unhealthy. The ingredients were all in the right amount, very good balance of ingredients for the flavor too, therefore ended up with a healthy salad with the right amount of greens and extras, and with flavor to match. Lunch in the Avoca Cafe on Suffolk Street today. Out of all the Avoca's (and there are many at this stage...) this one is my favourite, friendly staff, fast service and gorgeous food on the menu. Nothing is too much trouble, the waiting time was barely 10 minutes at 1.00 on a Saturday afternoon with names taken and a comfy seating area to bide your time. There's ample seating room, no tables seem too close together, we were brought water with mint and cucumber slices in it which was a lovely touch along with our menus and our order was taken swiftly. Despite being packed our food came out within 5 or 6 minutes and boy was it delicious... lamb tagine with couscous, pitta and tzatziki for me and the crab salad for my companion..... both were delicious although the crab was a little salty and personally I didn't like the wholegrain mustard on the leaves accompanying my tagine.... but that's personal preference and may not be the case for everyone... the ingredients are local and good quality as always. We managed to resist dessert even though the most divine Normandy cake (I think it's called) was on the menu... almond sponge with fresh berries which is amazing from previous visits and also making it myself from one of the numerous Avoca cookbooks. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend, nothing seemed too much trouble even me asking for the breakfast menu just to have a wee look at what awaits us on Christmas Eve morning... go and enjoy!!! read more

Cool, cool, cool, expensive, cool. If I could do my kitchen purely from Avoca then I'd be a happy woman. Unfortunately, I can maybe afford a salt shaker or two, but not much else. The quirkiness here is to die for, but the prices will kill you. However, it's still worth a look, and is a great place for little presents or stocking fillers (or from cheapskates like me, the entire present!). The clothes are also beautiful, but overpriced doesn't even really cover them, as the prices are astronomical. The cards and homeware are well worth a look, and even one or two pieces will really brighten up your life, or at least your home. read more
