I rented a car for a road trip down the Connecticut coast with my husband and some friends a few weeks ago. We picked up our car after we landed at Hartford (around 9pm on a Thursday - but of a holiday weekend; July 4 was the next day). Although it was a later arrival time and the airport seemed dead, Avis was not. There was quite a long line. I was on the Avis Preferred board, which normally means a faster check-in process, but there was no one manning the desk when we arrived (they were on their break). It wasn't the longest rental car line I've waited in (LAX on a weekend we didn't realize was a Coachella weekend will probably never be beat), but it was long enough on a late night after traveling and a rough flight. Getting the car was easy enough once we got to the front of the line. The car wasn't as nice as most I've rented through Avis (older GPS system that I couldn't connect to with my phone, a gravel guard not fully connected that made a bunch of noise when driving, etc.). Pretty standard for a car rental place anyway. If you need a car, it'll have to do. read more

Being an avis preferred member seems to have no benefit when it comes to the quality of vehicle you are getting. As you can see in the photos attached to this review the vehicle had never gone through any type of QC (quality control). The vehicle use to be a zip car before Avis purchased the vehicle and introduced it into their fleet of rentals. The vehicle had dents all throughout the body, check engine light, interior looks like it's never seen any type of cleaning chemical. As a preferred member with Avis I'm looking for quality and service and both of those I did not receive. read more

I wish I could give this place 0 stars. Rented a car from here. The battery died so the car was now a useless brick. Called roadside assistance through Avis who towed the car but apparently the car doesn't get marked as returned until it returns from the repair shop. Called customer service and I'm now billed daily since the car wasn't marked as returned through their idiotic roadside assistance process. When I arrived in Chicago, I had reserved another car. Avis will not rent me any cars until the previous car is returned. When will that be? Who knows. So called customer service again and they said if I cancel I am still charged the cost of the second car even though it's their busted ass process that the first car wasn't marked as returned in the first place Avis Preferred means absolutely nothing. Landed late on my flight and was in a rush. The car was already selected and waiting for me to run through and drive off. The car had been in an obvious fender bender as the right front trim was warped/scraped and the inner fender was not even attached in a majority of the locations. Inside the car, the carpet at the drivers door was completely pulled away from the trim and looked horrible. As soon as I left the rental car center, the service engine soon light came on as well as the wiper fluid low. I have had great luck with Avis over the years, but this center has so many issues as this is not the first car issue I've had out of this location. read more

I have been a loyal Avis supporter for several years, however they have just gone down the tubes. Since June 2024, I have rented from the Windsor locks Bradley International location 4 times. Car# 1: dodge charger with 70,000 miles and bald front tires, informed the attendant checking it back in after drop off Car#2: Dodge Hornet chargeable hybrid. Trash in the car, battery wasn't charged so used gas the entire time. I left the car at drop off, no one around to check it in, I left the keys in the cup holder and got an email 3 days later saying to return the car and I'm being charged for the days over. Got that cleared up eventually. Car# 3: Mazda CZ 50 had trash in the trunk area Car# 4 ... and 5: Infinity SUV, left parking garage, car was stuck in 4 wheel drive and would it come out, had lights flashing on dash, front end collision system light was on, RPMs stuck at 4.5 going 70 on the highway. Turned around 5 minutes down the road to return to Avis and the check engine light came on. Traded it in, they gave me GMC Yukon Denali... leaving parking garage, low oil light came on.... Screw it, let the engine get screwed, so we kept dismissing it. Second to last day, going down the highway a crap ton of lights come on, parking brake, traction, loss of braking system, can't drive over 62 mph, anti collision light on, and whatever else decided to join the party! We stopped, shut it down and restarted, everything went away. We got to the return, told attendant, MAYBE they will do something, or maybe it will go back in rotation. RENTERS BEWARE!!!! Time to find another different rental company for my rentals. read more

Not sure why we keep renting from Avis? Maybe it's because we are Preferred Gold and the rates are usually good, but not sure if a lower price is worth their terrible service. I rented a car in Albany on November 5th. On my drive down to Hartford on November 6th, I could tell there was something wrong with the car. It would not go over 60mph on the highway. When I called Avis to ask about switching the car, four different people told me I had to drive 2 1/2 hours back to Albany to make the switch. How absurd to ask a customer to drive almost 3 hours with a bad car? There was was no way I could or would do that. I finally got someone with a brain who said I could return the car to Hartford Airport and gave me a reference number. The staff at the Hartford airport on November 6th could not have been more unfriendly and less helpful. They did not apologize or inquire about my safety. They were just concerned about and kept mentioning that they were charging me for the gas that I had forgotten to refill during this stressful situation. They did switch the car and gave me a downgraded vehicle without the Sirius radio I had paid for. I had a similar situation last summer with Hertz and their staff could not have been nicer. I had to switch out a car and they apologized, gave me an upgraded vehicle, and a free tank of gas. Avis really needs to do some customer training. read more

literally every time I come here early in the morning, they've got no agent at the front desk and i have to go walk around the parking lot and search for one. then when i actually get my car, they ALWAYS either have multiple cars blocking the exit gate and i need to do the same exact thing (hey guys you left several non-customer cars parked right in front of the customer gate) or i need to go find someone to open the gate. first time i was here they didn't send me the QR code to open the gate, second time they did. i always end up having to plan 45 minutes ahead. read more

I rented a full sized car that I needed for work travel. The first car I received was a Toyota Camry with 65,000 miles. Certainly well worn but fit the bill. I got ten minutes up the road and all of the sudden the "maintenance required" light went on. So, I turned the car around and went back to Avis (frustrating). They put me in car #2, a Nissan Altima - which as soon as I started the car, the "oil change" light came on. I don't know who is checking on these cars and keeping them up and running but there is something seriously lacking in this location. This wasted almost an HOUR of my time. Then I asked for a manager and spoke with Joe who told me he would "upgrade me" (which by this time I should have been able to pick any car off the lot of my choosing, but alas that did not happen) and "upgraded me" from a Toyota Camry to a Volkswagen Passat. I am sure that you, like me, are confused as to how that is any upgrade of ANY sort to compensate me for the trouble of not one, but two unfunctional cars. Had I gotten on the road with either of these cars, I could have had a breakdown en-route to Boston and that could have been dangerous to me. I just wanted to message my frustration with the way that this was handled and I am acutely aware that I was not "upgraded." I paid for a Toyota Camry and got another full size car. Upon return, do the same & capture every detail. 3. Insist someone from the office looks at the car with you and signs a receipt stating that there's no damage. AVIS ripped us off in a car rental in Central America--they claim no responsibility outside the US and Canada, although we booked on the AVIS website--our card was used by the "independent" outlet for a clothing store swipe and even the credit card company says they are not responsible because the card was not stolen. On top of overcharged, the car was filthy, in disrepair and the emergency phone numbers were out-of-order. I guess we were lucky to live through, But advice to all NEVER USE AVIS anywhere. read more

Picked up the intermediate SUV I reserved. Next day found multiple cockroaches in the car, called to get a replacement. Made sure to ask the agent for a similar size vehicle because I was traveling with my spouse, our two young children, two car seats, two strollers and lots of luggage, they said yes would not be a problem. He was very professional and apologized for the inconvenience and offered me a partial refund and transferred me to someone else who set up the exchange. The tow truck arrived later that day with a Toyota Camry. I called customer service again because I wouldn't be able to get my family and all our stuff back the 90 miles back to Tampa with the Camry and the agent said there was nothing she could do even before she heard the situation. She was very rude and short. After being transferred another two times someone finally was able to help me. The whole process of exchanging a vehicle for a problem that I was not responsible for was ridiculous. I was asked over and over by the agent if I could drive the 90 miles back to Tampa to return the car but I couldn't. If the rental place was close by maybe but I'm not wasting 3 hours of my vacation exchanging cars. The agent should have asked once and then it should not have been asked again. I am completely dissatisfied and will share my experience and photos of the bugs next time anyone asks about can rental company preferences. read more

Your dealer at BDL selected options against my wishes. I did not choose these options when I prepaid for my rental, yet they chose these options - insurance and gas - when I explicitly said I did not want any other options. My bill went from $89/day - prepaid - to $157/day. Due to flight cancellation, I needed to extend my rental by a day. Prior to extending my rental for one day, I called Avis and was told that the charges were removed and the reservation was corrected. I then opted to extend my rental for one day rather than return the car and get a rental elsewhere. Avis was wrong and outright lied. The changes weren't made and the bill ended up at $310 instead of under $200. Finally, I repeatedly asked if the TOTAL was $215 including my prepaid $89, or if it was $215 PLUS $89. Repeatedly I was told the former, which would indicate that the billing error was corrected and that the difference was due to a different rate for the weekend. They outright lied. They outright chose options after I chose the opposite and repeated said I did not want to pay anything more than my prepaid amount. Now I'm still trying to have this corrected. These people are terrible. Try harder. read more

So here's my story. I picked up my car. Drove 10-15miles.. and snap.. car troubles. I called Avis customer service (which was the hardest part of this ordeal.... finding someone to talk to), they told me where the nearest rental office was. Gave me the address and assured me, that the vehicle was safe to drive, but it did need to get switched out. I got there, the nice young man working, swapped out the car and made sure it was the same model. Which didn't matter to me. However his attention to detail was noticed. In 4 days I put about 1500 miles on the car. I returned it to the airport. The staff was so friendly. I saw what I though was an error on the bill, and they looked at it, explained it and made it right. I would highly recommend Avis and this particular location. Horrible customer service experience with the manager, Andrew. The car had to be exchanged after the staff said the changed the battery in the key fob but didn't which left me stranded. Had to use their roadside assistance which was another service failure. The replacement vehicle was gross, not cleaned, smelled and was in disrepair. No option to use my iPhone with CarPlay, the wheels shook when the car reached 70 mph. Do not rent from Avis or Budget. read more

First, I am not a big Avis fan. The only reason that I use them is my company has a contract with them. I travel about 3 weeks each month so I visit a number of Avis locations and most are sub-par. This location at Bradley is one of the best. The agents are friendly. The cars are ready and clean. The lot is easy to navigate. It is easy to return the car. The shuttle bus runs frequently and the bus drivers are friendly. Avis should model all of their locations after the BDL location. read more

They have everything you need: Lazy shuttle drivers who don't help with your bags or even talk to you... they got them. Rude service clerks that don't communicate or help you solve any problems... got those too. No instructions about where or how to get your car.. you bet! And don't forget the attitude, they throw that in for free. They're lucky they are on a busy road and have barbed wire or I would've taken my business to Budget next door. This review is for Corporate, Not the location - Hey, What an incredible experience I just had with Payless / Avis Car Rental! After I returned the car - they didn't process it, so 3 days later, I got a text asking if I wanted to Extend the Rental. I tried to call the location where I dropped it off, but their phone is set to go to corporate '1-800- who knows where' after 3 rings - so I could never reach them. I called the number on the text - useless. I literally spent HOURS calling different Customer Support numbers - all useless. One person filed a report (hey here's an idea: CALL THE LOCATION WHERE I DROPPED IT OFF!!!). Oh no, we can't do That. But let me transfer you. Cold transfers, so you have to give the new person on the line ALL the SAME information you JUST GAVE the Last person! Meanwhile I keep getting texts. 6 days later, the texts are threatening me with Legal Action. People have filed reports, talked to me, transferred me - I must have talked to a dozen people - wasted ALL that time for ALL those people, when a SINGLE phone call to the rental location could have solved EVERYTHING. I kept getting told that my confirmation number was for a different person. Turns out - they were checking my reservation under Avis, but the rental was through Payless. THEN, when I finally got someone who HELPED me, he says, 'oh, looks like there's an additional $77 charged on the rental. I'm like, ABSOLUTELY NOT - You people should be giving me a free Jaguar rental for a month after this mess. He can't fix it - tell me 'it should be resolved in 3-5 business days.' I usually hate to fly into airports that have the rental lots offsite... however, BDL is an exception! After picking up my bag from baggage claim, I walked out the door to a waiting Avis shuttle, the driver loaded my bad for me and it was a short ride to the lot. The driver asked if I had my space number, I did and he took me to my car, he loaded my bag into my car and waited until I checked the car out for previous damage and started the car. He was exceptionally curious and it was appreciated for a woman traveling alone. The vehicle was clean and sufficient for my needs. read more

Very friendly staff, reasonable prices, and good service. I came off my plane into Bradley airport and only had to wait a few minutes for the Avis shuttle. The driver was friendly and offered to help with my bags. It was a quick 5-10 minute drive to the Avis rental location where they had a great selection of cars. The staff was friendly and it was a seamless process to check-in and get my car, which had the keys and everything in it waiting for me. The return was also quick and painless as they had a specific lane for you to pull into, the staff scanned and checked the gas, and I was on my way in less than 30 seconds. This is more about Avis as a whole, but the main point of contention happened at Bradley. I got a flat tire on the way to Connecticut after picking up in a different location. I put on the spare, called the number on the keychain and was told to drive the car to the nearest location. Then when I told her where I was, she told me I wouldn't make it to that location before it closed. So I had to find a place to spend the night. I woke up the next day and drove to the nearest (45 minutes) location on the spare tire. The guy there told me there were no cars available at his location and to drive to the airport. I then drove another 30 minutes to Bradley. When I got there I was told that I would have to pay for the flat tire. I was flustered at this point and felt the need to explain my ordeal, but there was zero sympathy offered, only blame. "When you put on the spare tire, you became responsible for the cost of the flat tire", "I'm not the one who drove over a nail or whatever you drove over", "You should've told customer service that you needed someone to bring a car to you", "You should've called different locations to find out who had a car available". I explained that I did exactly what customer service instructed me to do. The overall attitude from the employee was "Oh well". So they swapped out my car and I left. Not long after that trip was over, I got billed $40 for the 2 tolls I drove through. I used the e-toll in both cars. I understand the e-toll convenience fee, but they charged the cars separately so they were able to charge me twice their $20 max. This was my first and last Avis experience. read more

Here's how it went: 1st - went to my space to get my car... nothing but pavement (no car there). Went back to counter... 2nd - got the car and drove out the lot... low tire pressure indicator as soon as I exited the gate. Back to car rental return and back to the counter. 3rd - "upgraded" to a better car. Smells like a flowery ashtray inside *sigh*. I tell the attendant to make a note that it smells like an ashtray so I dont get charged for it later. I drive off with it because it's 1:30am and I am in no mood to go back a 4th time. And it wasn't just me - the renter after me came back to the desk also to say the entire driver side of the car was damaged. Management - get your act together and fix this. read more

BEWARE. When you search Avis for "Hartford airport" location, the downtown Avis pops up (as what is called 'Hartford" by Southwest Airlines is apparently not in Hartford!),. I dropped my car off at the airport Avis and they added over $2300 to my $233 rental (this is not a typo_! Which I only discovered on my credit card statement. And they are totally giving me the runaround about fixing it. No one can take billing questions on Sundays, 30 minutes on hold Monday, now she is refunding so of my money but can't tell me what the total charges are, says I will have to call back in 5-10 business days to see what the taxes and fees are.... Came here a month ago and used Avis. Drove a vehicle and ended up not liking it. When I came back and made my reservation I specifically asked to not be put in the same make and model. Upon arrival the second time, they said there were no notes. We were placed in the same vehicle and they had no other vehicle to put us in. When we got to the vehicle there were bags of trash still in it. When we started driving we saw the gas tank was on empty and we were told that we had to bring it back full or else we would be charged. After waiting 5 minutes on hold, someone finally answered and said to just bring it back on empty. Can't wait to comeback and not rent from this place! read more

Overall, I had a pretty good experience with this location. This Avis is not on site at the airport, however, there are PROMPT shuttles that will take you to and from the airport. I rented an Elite SUV, and there were a few options to chose from (I appreciated knowing my options vice being told what I was going to get). I chose a Ford Explorer and was happy to find a Ford Explorer with a FULL tank of gas and a little over 250 miles on it. I was in and out of there in under 10 min. Service was prompt, everyone was professional. I would rent from this location again. read more

I was a bit afraid of renting a car through Avis because I'm not really familiar with this company yet. I signed up to be a preferred member and it was easily the best decision I've ever made. As soon as I landed, got a text saying my car was all ready and parked in a spot #12. Getting to the shuttle from the airport was a breeze, there was one already waiting there. The ride was quick and the driver was extremely friendly. Though I rented a mid size car, they gave me a Jeep Patriot 2wd. Which wasn't bad because it was snowing that day. I would have preferred a car with a back up camera and they were helpful with giving me other available options. The car had a full tank and was clean inside. No complaints with that. I returned the car with a full tank also and they checked my car to make sure everything was fine and I paid my original estimate that I had online. I jumped back in a shuttle and same as the other shuttle driver, they carried my luggage up. Unfortunately, when we arrived to the airport, I realized that I forgot my backpack in the car that I just returned. I told the shuttle driver and he was super helpful. He drove me back to get the backpack. My experience overall was perfect and wonderful. Thank you so much, Avis staff for being so polite and accommodating! It was my first time flying myself and this was a milestone for me. I will be using this company again for my future rentals. I'm looking forward to coming back to visit Connecticut. read more
