Very easy rental process. My only reason for the 4 star rating was because the car reeked of cigarette smoke. Easy pickup and return.

We rented a car through Payless on Expedia during a trip from Hartford to Boston. They definitely seem like they are a smaller and a bit more run down than the other companies, but I have to brag on them and say that we didn't have any issues during our experience. A pretty good deal, and the process to get/return our car didn't take long at all. The shuttle was easy to find right outside of the airport, too. The service was okay, enough to get us what we needed. I watched a guy next to me argue with the manager over who knows what, and it seems they may need a tweak every once in a while. But then again it's hard not to in the car rental industry. We opted for a compact car, one of their cheapest options and it was a really nice Toyota. We drove through three states and only had to fill up once. They also had a special for $2 where we didn't have to refill the tank before returning the car. Once we returned it at Boston Logan all we had to do was drop off the folder and we were done. Great option if you're wanting the cheaper route! read more

This review is for Corporate, Not the location - Hey, What an incredible experience I just had with Payless / Avis Car Rental! After I returned the car - they didn't process it, so 3 days later, I got a text asking if I wanted to Extend the Rental. I tried to call the location where I dropped it off, but their phone is set to go to corporate '1-800- who knows where' after 3 rings - so I could never reach them. I called the number on the text - useless. I literally spent HOURS calling different Customer Support numbers - all useless. One person filed a report (hey here's an idea: CALL THE LOCATION WHERE I DROPPED IT OFF!!!). Oh no, we can't do That. But let me transfer you. Cold transfers, so you have to give the new person on the line ALL the SAME information you JUST GAVE the Last person! Meanwhile I keep getting texts. 6 days later, the texts are threatening me with Legal Action. People have filed reports, talked to me, transferred me - I must have talked to a dozen people - wasted ALL that time for ALL those people, when a SINGLE phone call to the rental location could have solved EVERYTHING. I kept getting told that my confirmation number was for a different person. Turns out - they were checking my reservation under Avis, but the rental was through Payless. THEN, when I finally got someone who HELPED me, he says, 'oh, looks like there's an additional $77 charged on the rental. I'm like, ABSOLUTELY NOT - You people should be giving me a free Jaguar rental for a month after this mess. He can't fix it - tell me 'it should be resolved in 3-5 business days.' This is the Payless Car Rental at the airport (BDL). We rented from Payless for the first time because rental rates seemed to be very high with everyone else. Payless was cheaper, especially if you paid in advance (which we did). First, Payless is the no-frills division of Budget. You right the Budget bus to the remote lot and then you go to the Payless counter inside the Budget office. Everything about the Payless experience is worse than Budget. Payless has only one counter and you have to wait longer. When you return the car, the Budget people can get a receipt outside and get on the bus. Payless renters have to wait in line inside again. Seems frustrating... The worst part was the upwell when we picked up the car. The Payless rep repeatedly tried to upwell us on upgrades, insurance, pre-paid gas, etc. The "upgrade" car was twice the price of what we had already chosen. When we said no, the price kept coming down and she kept finding additional discounts to get the price down until we said "yes." Interestingly, she sold us on the upgrade to a Jeep Cherokee by telling us it was a 7 passenger vehicle -- which would have been useful to us. We threw our luggage in the back and only after we were at our destination did we realize there was no third seat and it was only a 5 passenger vehicle. Too late to fix it, and very frustrating... The upgrade was a waste. She also misrepresented the local gas prices when she tried to sell us the pre-paid fuel. She told us gas "outside" was $4.10 per gallon. We never saw prices that high, and actually filled the car for only $3.35 per gallon just outside the airport. The car itself was fine, but not exactly what I would call clean. I guess there is a reason why you pay less for Payless. You need to decide whether the tradeoffs are worth the price. I think I'm going back to a premium company next time. read more

Representatives lie! I needed a car rental for a week in Connecticut, and the least inexpensive option I could find last minute was through Payless for 184.45 (93 for the week, and about 90 worth of taxes and fees.) When I was checking out I noticed that the rate was increased to 201.97. I asked the representative (Stephen) why that was. He replied that my return time (11:00 am) was later than pick up time (10:30 am) because my arrival flight was early. He was essentially saying that the increase was for an additional day, but if I brought it back by 10:30 am on the return day, that it would bring it back to the 184.45. Because I was in a rush, I accepted this response and signed the screen accepting that increase without reading the fine print. Stephen actually lied about the increase. It was in fact a $2 per day upgrade fee that they charged me for the car that I never requested! I booked an economy and they gave me Nissan Versa, which was a tiny little car, you'd never know what category it fell into. Its not like they gave me an SUV or sports car upgrade. I was later told by the manager that there was no way to confirm that I didn't request this, but that the representatives get paid on commission. Trust me, I would have considered an upgrade if it was offered to me, especially in February in Connecticut in the snow. I was actually considering an SUV for all wheel drive, but was never offered an upgraded car! I bet you are wondering why I would take the time to write this over an increase of $20, but this wasn't even all! I initially booked this car for a week, but before I picked up the car, I found out that I had to cut my trip short and fly out of CT after 4 days instead of the full week. I told this to Stephen at check out, because I was unfamiliar with how it works if you return a car early. He informed me that I would be refunded the prorated amount based on my usage. So in my mind 184.45/7=26.35 a day x 4 days = 105.40 including all taxes. When I returned the car after 4 days, before 10:30 am I may add, the final balance that they were trying to charge me was 172.50. Unfortunately Stephen was not working, so I told the representative about the conversation that we had, and she said unfortunately there was nothing that she could do because I didn't read the contract more carefully. This woman was the worst, one of those people who is looking to start an argument over trying to help the customer. I didn't get her name, but if you ever rent from Payless BDL, please beware of the ugly middle aged woman who thinks shes good looking but in all actuality are disgusting and plasters on all this makeup to attempt to cover up her ugliness, but it doesn't even blend it into her neck so she looks like a clown. Shes the one that will probably be on her phone instead of trying to help the customers. Anyways I was getting nowhere with her so I asked for a manager. He at least attempted to rectify the situation by getting the daily rate down and the total cost for 4 days was 151.93. Still going through Payless customer service to get the additional $50, but based on the response I got, they will be getting back to me in 3-5 business days via email with a response, so it doesn't look promising. I'm so upset I am writing this from the airport instead of doing my work. Its amazing how a situation and negative people can just ruin your mood for the day. Needles to say I will never be renting from Payless again, if there was a negative star amount I would be giving them negative. The manager was OK after talking with him nicely, the guy driving the shuttle was nice, beware of anyone checking you in/out (salesmen that work off commission) and the wicked witch of the west. read more

It was easy to rent a car online, and the location was easy to find in Reykjavik Airport, Iceland. We were recommended to ad an ensurance for 25 euro a day because of the rough climate in Iceland, so we added that. We signed on a ipad. When we returned the car, we had filled the tank, and the receptionist checked the car - and everything looked fine. When we returned to Denmark we got a receipt and the price was 3 times larger ... they'd added 2 other things "additional products" and "a fuel solution" and wanted the additional payment. I think it such BAD SERVICE to claim payment for something you didn't ask for / were told about / or could se when you sign the contract !!! Then we were told to contact customerservice - which we did. But they claimed that we signed for all the extras - which we couldnt see on a contract when we signed. And suddently the also claimed that the tank was not filled - eventhough the lady who checked the car told us that everything was allright when we returned the car. NEVER AGAIN !!! A coworker and I recently rented a car from Payless for a one day business trip right next to the airport. The whole experience was definitely "meh," but with the plethora of rental car companies in the area, we would have both much rather gone to a different company. We waited outside the airport for about 15 minutes and watched multiple shuttles pass by before we realized that the Payless shuttle is the same shuttle as the Budget shuttle (the Payless logo is underneath the giant Budget shuttle, so if you're not looking closely, you'd just assume that it's just the Budget shuttle). Payless shares the same office as Budget, and the Budget line moved significantly faster. After we processed at the counter, we had to go out to the parking lot to find our car, do a walk around, note any dings on the slip, and return the slip to the counter. (Definitely an easier process at Hertz where we rented the day before in another city). We rented a Hyundai Elantra that smelled terribly like smoke (and since it was 10F outside, we weren't keen on opening the windows). We noted this on the slip since there is a fine for smoke smell. My coworker said that if we were renting the car for more than one day, he'd go back to the counter, but for just one day it wasn't worth the hassle. For the return, we drove into the lot, parked in a random lane, and looked around for a few minutes wondering what to do. We were finally greeted by a man in a Budget uniform. While Budget cars can be checked in right at the car, we had to go back to the counter to check out. All in all it wasn't a terrible experience (especially for one day), but i'm sure that there are better cars and easier experiences at other rental companies. read more

This company is criminal! I did a 2 day rental for a car in hartford ct and they charged my card 980 dollars and I reserved with Travelocity and was quoted 35 a day amounting to under 100 for 2.5 days. They refused to take off the over charge. I called the national headquarters and they too were not helpful. This place is the worst business I've ever dealt with. Do not rent a car from Payless and do not let Travelocity or Expedia allow you to utilize this company for any of your car rentals. A very expensive lesson. I dealt with Patrick at the Hartford airport and he was awful and aligned with their corruption. DO NOT RENT FROM HERE. We flew into Bradly and rented a car through Payless. As soon as we pulled out of the rental car company, the car started to tell us that the left front tire was low, so we had to go get air for the tire. Then, two days later, during the 4th of July, we tried to start the car to go to a family gathering and the car would not start. We called Payless and they told us that the best they could do was to wait for the tow truck (which we were told was an hour and a half away) and then somehow get to their closest rental location 45 miles away. Better yet, they would NOT let me go get the new rental car while my fiance waited for the tow truck and were told, again, that the best they could do was for me to go to the rental car location and wait for the confirmation that the tow truck had picked up the keys before getting the new car. So- fast forward two hours in which my fiance was stuck with the car and I had to get a family member to drive me on the 4th of July an hour out of the way, the tow truck comes and picks the car up and I get to the location. Never got an apology or was never offered any money back anything at all while at the rental car location (we were finally able to get some money back after spending an hour on the phone). I cannot believe Payless considered this an acceptable experience for a paying customer to have to lose 3+ hours (and miss a big family event), not get a single apology, and have to beg for some money back.DO NOT RENT FROM HERE. This is literally the worst car rental place I've ever experienced. I've rented here several times and will not again. Woman is not often at counter, today she was outside on her personal cell phone when I walked in and I had to go back outside after a few minutes to ask her to let me check out. No one there to check me out when I pulled in either. When you arrive to get your car, again people are never at the counter. And they don't get the car for you or walk out with you to check car condition. Last car I got was in such poor condition I had to almost circle the whole car to indicate damage. I would definitely recommend another rental agency...anything would be better. read more

I went to Hartford, CT for a work and I had the weekend open so I decided to rent a car for a last minute trip to Boston and I used Payless Car Rental. Payless was not my first choice. I went through four other rental companies (all in the same area) and all the attendants were very rude. It was a last minute trip and I didn't have a reservation, so I didn't expect a great selection from the other companies. They didn't have to be jerks about it. I walked out of four car rental companies before I got to Payless. When I arrived at Payless (it shared the building with another rental company) I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted with a smile. The attendant was very helpful and nice. She gave me a list of all of all the prices and options. She did try to upsell me (I feel that all rental companies do that) but if you say no, they are not pushy about it. I got a fair price and the attendant gave me a bunch of recommendations for my trip (it was my first time in Boston) and even looked up some great information for me. I really enjoy giving my business to companies that still treat their customers with respect. read more

I rented through Payless Car Rental for a weekend in CT and it wasn't the best. Getting the car seemed fine. Instead of going to the Payless counter (no one was there) had to go to the Budget counter. Had a little bumps in the road: system was down and didn't have Payless contracts so wrote on Budget contract. Car was brought to us, and we were on our way. After learning that our early morning flight was cancelled, and our flight was rebooked until the next day, I tried calling Payless. There was no answer. I tried calling Budget...there was no answer. I tried calling both locations 20+ times, and nothing. Either their phones were down, or they didn't want to pick up the phone. Either way, I called the Payless Customer Service number and asked if they can transfer or help out and the gentlemen on the other line was rude. Didn't help and had an attitude the entire time. He tried to look up the rental agreement but couldn't find it, since it was on a Budget contract and not a Payless. We couldn't get a hold of anyone to let them know we had to keep the car an extra day. When I returned the car, they couldn't find the contract in the system. Overall, the car wasn't bad, but the service that we got, or never got was horrible. They were disorganized, and I will never be renting from Payless again. read more

These guys are scam artists. Rented a compact car and the lady tried talking me into a midsize for $16 weekend upgrade. I maintained the small car was fine. She was relentless, but I kept saying "I'll take the small car I rented please". Finally she gave in and told me she'd give me the bigger car anyway for the same price. Turned out she didn't have the smaller car to rent, yet she kept trying to get me to pay for the larger car. It got worse on the pressure she gave me to take the insurance, which I also declined regardless of her high pressure and lie filled sales pitch. Next time I'll probably pay the extra money and go with a name brand. read more

I prepaid for a rental car from Payless. When I arrived, the clerk demanded a deposit of either $200 on a credit card, which I did not have available, or $350 on a debit card. That's right- $350. I had it available but it would have put a serious damper on my trip. Since they share an office with Budget, I decided to rent there. I called to cancel my Payless reservation but only got a dispute number from the phone rep. He told me I'd receive a call in 24 hours. Two days go by and I finally received an email denying my refund. After several go-rounds, I was told that that there is a link on the page with the terms and conditions that has "local renter policies". The font is tiny and it's nowhere near the terms and conditions. Only there does it state that a $350 deposit is required when using a debit card. The title is misleading. I am not a local renter. Even if I had noticed that link, I most likely would not have read it. Payless is slimy. They care more about getting every dollar they can out of you, whether or not you rent a car, then they do about taking care of the customer. I read in another review that Payless is owned by Budget. After being screwed by Payless and renting from Budget, I believe this was a big bait & switch operation. I've already sent a complaint to the CT Attorney General's office. Absolutely the worst and they LIE. We are originally from CT and when we arrived from fla, THE LADY BEHIND THE COUNTER SUGGESTED A UPGRADE SINCE IT WAS GOING TO SNOW AND THE Nissan versa WOULD BE BAD IN THE WEATHER, OK. We do it. #!. STUPID ON OUR PART. Then the insurance, explaining my insurance will cover any damage, she insisted it would NOT.. LIAR...So we end up with a rental which was oringally 95.00 to 375.00!! NEVER NEVER AGAIN... she didn't even vocally tell us what the charge was, we were late for a FUNERAL.. I wrote to them when I got home and read all the paper work,, they could care LESS...
