I flew to California last minute for a family emergency. I rented my car at the San Francisco airport. The staff member told me that if I returned the car to a different location, it would cost $50. Due to the family emergency, I needed to change my return date and return it to the Modesto office. I went on Saturday to change the return date. IIn the parking lot, I was juggling a sleeping baby in a car seat and another child. A staff member came out of the office and offered to help me. After I explained my problem, the staff member entered my information on the computer, the return change fee was $500. She told me to talk to the owner Fernando when I returned the car the next week. Fernando was amazing. He was friendly and courteous. He waived the $500 change fee (which was more than the total rental amount) and found some other discounts so that my final total was less than the original amount when I rented the car. I will definitely use the Modesto Avis location again! read more

Modesto-I am SO PLEASED that I stopped by this Avis store. I was on my way to the Fresno airport to return my rental car. I really did not want to make the 4 hour round trip and wondered if they would take it back at the Modesto shop, instead. Rented me a smelly car that needed an oil change and charged me for detailing after the fact. Garbage company and garbage service.

I have tried both locations in Modesto now. Both need to do way better. I was enticed with a deal to rent again, so I tried. Had an 8 day rental for a great price, took one hour to check out the car. I turned the car in and notice a charge for $50. I tried calling, they just won't answer the phone at all. My review is based on customer service. Horrible, horrible service be aware!!!! This is the first time trying to rent a car here and it will be my last! I had reservation for a rental car i was passed my time frame by not that long! So when i got there i gave them my information and the guy at the front desk looked at me and said "oh you are way past your time frame so we gave your car away. You can go somewhere else and look" I couldn't believe that was the customer service i was getting. Never had i experience this, everything i rent a car somewhere else always friendly even if you are passed your time frame they are usually like no problem that's fine. The new location is on Pelandale Road, so make sure you call if there is confusion. Fernando has always been helpful for my can rentals, though this place can get busy with only one or two employees. Will NEVER EVER use Avis again, nationally or locally especially the Wood Colony location. Several months we secured a rental from Modesto to SF. This was a less than 24 hour rental. We received confirmation of the rental and that payment had been accepted. We went to pick up the car, but was told they would not rent to us. We were told that because we paid with a debit card that a credit check needed to be done. After the check was done we were denied the rental. The man behind the counter told us it was in the fine print on the agreement, but when I asked where he said he could not tell me ie...he did not know. They rental was for $166 the credit check was on a lesser amount. When we got to the local franchise, they did not have the car we asked for. He told us about two other cars, one with gas and another didn't have a full tank. Oh yeah now we are in a dispute over our money cause they want to charge us a cancellation fee. We live in the Bay Area and went to Yosemite in February. We do not have an all wheel drive or 4-wheel drive vehicle and we needed one. So we called all of the rental car companies to find one. All of them with the exception of this location said they can not guarantee that we get an all wheel or 4-wheel drive vehicle. Fernando, who is the owner of this location, assured us that he would have an all wheel or 4-wheel drive vehicle for us when we arrive and he did just that! I can not recommend Fernando enough! Only giving this location one star because the app requires me to give at least one. I made a reservation with Avis over a month before I was arrive in Modesto. I was supposed to get my car at 1pm on a Sunday. When I arrived, Angela told me they had no cars available. They would check another location in town but it would cost me more than the rate I was quoted. She checked anyway and there no cars available in Modesto. I politely declined and asked the woman behind the counter what she could do to rectify the situation. Angela said she couldn't do anything because it wasn't her fault that people weren't bringing the cars back in time. I asked when she thought she could get me a car. She replied maybe tomorrow morning. I asked what time I should be back the next day. She answered, "It's better for me to call you and you will the first call I make when I get a car back." Luckily, Modesto is my hometown and I was able to borrow a car for a couple of days from a friend. When I didn't hear back from her her Monday morning, I called her. Angela looked up my name and asked me why I hadn't shown up at 1pm that day to pick up my car. I reminded her of our previous conversation to which she replied, "No, that's not what I said." I said yes you did. She said no I didn't. This went on far too long. Finally, I said, "Do you have a car for me to pick up?" She said yes and the weekly rate will be the same. I said, "Well it shouldn't be the same because of your mistake I wasn't able to pick up the car yesterday. Why should I pay the same rate for 6 days that I would've for 7? Also, will there be any additional compensation for my inconvenience?" Not from me", she replied. "I'm not authorized to do that. You would have to speak to Customer Service to get a rate adjustment." I told her I had already spoken with 2 separate people in customer service and they both told me rate changes had to be handled by the store. But they would offer me a 15% discount when I returned the car. I continued the conversation by saying that would be satisfactory but I wanted her to change my rate from 7 days to 6 days. She replied, "You already got a discount but you want another one? I CANT BELIEVE THAT YOU WASTED MY TIME WITH THIS PHONE CALL." I explained that I wasn't looking for another discount I wanted her to change my rate from 7 days to 6 days. Finally she yelled, "OBVIOUSLY THIS ISSUE ISNT GOING TO BE RESOLVED." And she hung up on me. Unbelievable. Angela was extremely rude and unhelpful. I have never experienced such unbelievable treatment in my life. By the way, I still (24 hours later) haven't received a call from Avis about a car being available. Thankfully, I have wonderful friends who are letting me use a car for the remainder of my visit. I would avoid Avis at all costs. Not just this store front, but Avis entirely. Because when I tried to get a resolution from their customer service center, there was only ONE agent who apologized and tried to offer a solution out of the 6 or 7 employees (managers are included in this list). Rented the 12 passenger van. Got it later then reserved time cause wasn't cleaned. Just cleaned the inside but the outside was a mess. Said would give me $10 credit if I ran it through a car wash when I brought it back....What's the point of that??? I still didn't get the clean car. Then they charge you $10 a gallon for gas if you don't bring it back with the same amount. I brought it back with excess gas, over a 1/4 tank more, and they gave me $1 a gallon credit! Seriously gas is more expensive then that in CA! So spent $25 in gas to get $9 back. read more

Where do I start. First it was my fault for not checking Yelp first. If I had, I would have seen the bad reviews and gone with Hertz or picked up at the airport. But I went to the Sears outlet, with the infamous Angela (the poster child of rudeness). The car had a smoke free policy but there were holes burned in the seats. Then when I pointed out the stains on the seats and how my guests would have to sit there, she took a towel in a huff and rubbed them a few times and proclaimed to the world that the seats were clean. Hardly, I had to do it again to get them clean. Then half way down California the car would not recognize the key. Pouring rain and we had to swap it our in Bakersfield (who by the way was nice and apologized for our inconvenience). We were given a KIA SUV and upon returning it to Modesto, Angela was once again in her "mood". No "I'm so sorry" or "let me give you back a days rent" or something, just handed me the papers and took the keys. First, this woman needs to be fired. By these reviews Avis has a problem there. Second, Avis needs to take care of its customers or someone else will. And third Avis needs a better Q&A check point for their cars. When I was returning mine, the tow truck was towing one of theirs. Not good. I would suggest you call the location and ask for Angela, if she answers then go somewhere else. Better yet, don't even waist your time, just go somewhere else. Modesto has Hertz. Don't go to Budget or you will deal with "Ms. Personality" again (they are the same company). Even drive over to San Jose and get a BMW from Sixt. HEY AVIS...do something about this! read more

Angela runs a small and busy office of Avis/Budget open seven days a week. She is knowledgable and efficient. Be sure to reserve ahead of time whenever possible as vehicles are typically sold out ahead of time on holidays and some weekends. I rented two vehicles for most of almost four months. The vehicles were clean, full of fuel, and had no body damage. I drove over 1000 miles a month and had no problem whatsoever. Be sure to return the vehicle full of fuel or you will be charged the Avis rate of $10 a gallon surcharge. I am a 100% satisfied customer. read more

Avis/Budget on Dale Road at Vintage Fair Mall is the best location to rent. It is much more convenient for me than renting at the airport and the quality of the customer service is exceptional. Angela is the owner/operator and she always takes great care of me and my wife. We have rented there at least six times. Angela has gone out of her way to help us and is always super friendly and helpful. She will go out of her way to make sure you're taken care of. I would definitely rent from them! read more
