I am going on vacation and need to rent a car. I tried to sign into my Avis account so I could compare their rates with other rental services. I couldn't remember my user name or password and attempted to reset it. Their website said they'd send me a link to reset my user name and password to my email which they had in their records and it was correct. The link was never sent. I tried it again, again the link didn't come. After the third time the link didn't come through, I called customer service. Finding their customer service number was more of a challenge than it needed to be as well. I call customer service, there's no option on their automated system for technical difficulties. So I chose that I want to rent a car. The person I spoke didn't speak English very well and asked me the same questions a couple of times before she transferred me to someone else who didn't speak English very well and asked me the same questions over and over. If I don't know my user name or password, I surely don't know my "Wizard Number". This person told me that if I hadn't used my account in a year, my old account would have been deleted and I needed to set up a new account. Really? A rental car company, that is mainly used when someone's own car isn't working or when they go on vacation, deletes customers if they haven't logged on in a year. How often to most people need another car or go on vacation. Trying to compare rates was so frustrating, I won't bother in the future and will just use Hertz. read more

Please use a different rental company. It was a very busy night for rental cars, but I watched customers who entered the line at a different rental company next to us in the same position reach the front of the line and have keys in 30 minutes. It took us almost an hour and a half to reach the desk. They were only accepting customers who already had reservations so they really needed to do little processing other than payment. Rental car was great, but when we received the bill, it was for double what was expected. Despite verbally rejecting "loss damage waiver" and "roadside assistance", this was included in the numerous sheets we signed and therefore we were charged. Don't rent from them! The service they provide is completely terrible! I've broke down my review into different parts. See below. Car: The car, a Dodge Grand Caravan, was decent. It didn't seem like it was cleaned before I got it. There was an old sock in the inside of the car, sitting on the seat. The car only had about 6,000 miles on it, but it seemed to have an idle issues. What's nice, compared to other cars I've rented, is that the car had leather seats and a remote starter. Gas mileage on the car was great! Pick up service: Terrible! The person was rude! She talked at me and not to me. When I told her I have a reservation, she asked "How old are you?", as if I'm not old enough to rent a car. She gave me a dirty look when I declined insurance, as if I was stupid for not getting it. I booked my reservations via Costco, which gives me a free additional driver and she did not honor it. Overall, the pick up of the car was smooth. Checked in, got the paperwork done, get a paper with where the car is parked, pick up the car (key inside), and drive it to the gate where they scan the car and you drive out. Phone service: Contacted customer service via phone to follow up on them not giving me a free additional driver. They told me they can't do anything and I have to call Costco. They wanted to charge me $50 to add another driver. The guy on the phone seemed like he was reading off a script. Drop off service: Drop off was smooth. Drive the car up, they walk around, scan the car check mileage, and you're done. The worker, however, again just talked at me not to me. Never made any eye contact! Terrible service! They didn't give me a receipt and charged me $30 over the original quoted price. Now I have to dispute the gas fee when I returned the car with a full tank of gas that I got right before returning the car! read more

TSA lines are faster than this place. Kicking myself for not reserving with Hertz! Don't know if it's the staff or the systems they have to use but waiting over 30 min when there are only 5 people in line and 3 agents working is a bit ridiculous IMO. Maybe I'm just spoiled by Hertz, idk. Btw, I reserved online, they have my cc info, my insurance declaration, I downloaded app and checked in....why the need to wait in line to check in? Please simplify the process!! So after 40 minutes in line, I learned that although I did everything correctly online, I still needed to stand in line for a vehicle. Many upset customers were starting to voice their concerns. The agent (stressed but pleasant) said they are out of "Standard" vehicles. we were rented a car that wasn't working properly. we got stuck in the snow due to this fact. when we tried to call and get hep the "customer service" agent (and I use that phrase VERY loosely) didn't speak fluent English, so we were unable to understand him...he transferred the call yo a different department, wait, nope, he transferred us back to HIS line! Then he transferred us again to another agent who ALSO did not speak fluent English!! we finally got a hold of an English speaking agent and swapped cars. we still feel completely u safe driving in the new car...AVIS SUCKS! read more

If I could leave 0 stars, I would. Shorter: Just don't. Or if you do, let it be the very last resort. On 7/31/22, I waited in line for an hour and a half at the Chicago O'Hare Avis. I was the third or fourth customer in line. A crowd formed after me; by the time I left, there was a long line and only one employee at the counter. The employees were stressed out of their minds and I don't blame them. Several people abandoned the line and hopped over to Budget or National and waltzed away with keys in minutes while the rest of us waited. And btw, there were no lines at any of the other car rental agencies--people were just showing up, getting their keys, and trotting off happily when we waited miserably, our wait made even less fun by coming after 12 hours of cross-country travel; by occurring in a pandemic when no one was wearing a mask and people were coughing and sneezing; by the crowd getting restless, so there was a lot of muttering and grumbling. Also, the employee forgot to mention they add $200 for deposit in the charges to your credit card, which was annoying and made me worry until I called to verify the charges. None of this is to blame the employees at all, clearly every problem can be traced to an Avis overbooking/under capacity problem. They should have offered a discount or some free thing to offset the literal pain of the line. Not to mention that the ghastly cost of renting a car these days--but that's everywhere, not specific to Avis. The garage employees were great at pickup and drop-off, and the car was clean and pleasant to drive. Received the worst service at Avis at the Ohare, Chicago Airport. The day we picked up car it took 1 hour to rent the car. They only had 2 staff members on a Saturday morning. When we went to pick up vehicle they only had mini vans and SUVs when we specifically wanted a sedan. Today we came to return the car. The parking attendants said just leave the keys. I said I wanted a printed receipt. Between 3 attendants no one could do it. They then directed me to the office. There I encountered 2 of the rudest employees. Carla and a young man. I asked why they were so rude. They said what are we doing that's so rude. I said I'm coming in here asking for help and you are so standoffish. They finally gave me a receipt for $323 when it was supposed to be $259. They then called the manager Carla who was annoyed at the situation because she needed to take her lunch. She said I was being charged for a tank of gas when i clearly had filled it up about 5 minutes prior. The worst service ever. Don't rent at the O'Hare location with Avis. I have been a loyal AVIS preferred customer for more than 20 yrs. I picked up my car and noticed a very foul odor. Thinking it was disinfectant (smelled like bug spray) and due to limited time, I didn't report it at the time. Upon return, I commented that the car had a bad odor, but was better because I had opened the windows several time during the 5 day rental. Avis sent a letter to me 3 weeks later that they were charging me $479.00 to clean the car! I called customer service and was told there was documentation of ashes in ash tray (I'm a non-smoker) and they could not do anything about the charge. I asked for a supervisor and was told someone would call me back....7 hours later, still no call. Is it really so hard to believe a loyal customer? Or to follow up? "Customer Service"?? read more

The Good: 1. Car was in great shape, clean as much a rental can be and had a smooth drive. 2. Staff, whilst tired, did their best to serve me. 3. Buses where quick and the driver was courteous. The Bad: 1. The place could use a renovation. 2. Another staff member for the night shift would help a lot. 3. A Wi-Fi for the lobby and a charging station would be very helpful. Overall: Chicago O'Hare location is a busy one. One should expect it to be fast and easy going, granted, some customers weren't prepared nor had any reservations so that really hold up the line but should have another agent for the night shift. Got to the Avis preferred board only to read my name and the word "ctr," in other words, go to the counter. Well, the Avis preferred counter is closed, as is budget rent- a-car, which means I now have to line up behind 35 other customers instead of going straight to my car. So why use Avis preferred? Why use Avis at all? This is the 6th time I've seen them understaffed at midnight, so I'm pretty sure it's not a surprise. Now there's only 20 people ahead of me, but another 16 renters behind me. Take pictures of interior/exterior before and after! Keep gas receipts. I rented the car for a long weekend and the car was barely used. Two weeks later I get a charge for $250 for smoke smell and cigarettes burns in the seat!! I was with my girlfriend and her 7 year old daughter and none of us smoke! I've looked through these reviews and have so far found three other similar complaints. Can't blame Avis corporate but I do blame Avis O'Hare's shady a**hole employees robbing their customers. Good service on the front end but a total scam on the backend. Brought the car back with tank 1/2 empty. I knew I'd need to pay to fill it back up. Sigh at the counter stares it would be $2.42/gal. I was OK with that. Well, it seems that there us dome hidden clause that if I didn't pay extra on the front end for a "fueling option", I was now obliged to pay for a FULL tank of gas. Avis charged me $50 and change for what would probably amount to 6 gallons of gas. First time I've used Avis. Definitely the last time. read more

My husband received an unexpected letter in the mail a week or so after we returned the car. It stated Avis charged our credit card $297.00 for cleaning fees that were unwarranted. Avis would only return half the money. Avis also charged our credit card days later for tolls charges which we never used. When returning your car take videos and ask the person taking the car back in to verify there is no damage on video. I really question their business ethics. read more

When I arrived to pick up my car, Juan was quick to get me checked in and I walked out the door in less than 5 minutes. Him and the manager were extremely helpful and kind. I'm not sure where the negative reviews came from, or perhaps they have new employees now. I'm glad I decided to rent with them, originally I was skeptical due to the negative reviews. I was lied to by the agent at ORD concerning gas coverage. I was told I had have it at $68, fill the rental back up at a gas station near the airport, bring my receipt and maybe they could waive the gas fee. She said her printer was down and could not give me a printed bill, she scribbled a few things on a pamphlet and sent me on my way. When I got to the car the front passenger seat had a big chocolate stain on it, the attendant who walked me to the car said there was nothing she could do and just take a picture of it and show it when I returned the car. I had a family emergency and needed to return the car at a different location and was charged an additional $70 for the change. The overall experience was awful and costly, the took advantage of a person who was dealing with a life and death situation and up-charged me on anything they could read more

I can not believe it! I prepaid $400+ for a 4 day rental for a Jeep Renegade. Then Avis charged me $217 extra. They claimed that I agreed to pay all those extra expensive liability coverage at the counter. Never in a million years! I know these tricks. I used the American Express Gold card to rent the car, the card have enough coverage for rental cars, and you need to decline the car rental company's offer to qualify for Amex coverage. So I always decline those extra liability BS at he counter. Again this time, I made it very clear at the counter that I decline these extras. Now they claim that they have my signature! Scam artists! Worst rental experience ever in my 20 plus years of traveling for work. Shuttle bus decides not to stop for us at airport forcing us to wait another 20 mins for the next one. App tells me my car (upgraded me to a Camaro - very nice) is in a certain space. No car in that space. No one at the counter either. Finally some one shows up but I'm customer #2 in line. 20 more mins and I get a carolla in the farthest space possible. Car is dirty and doesn't smell great, but I don't want to go back in line. On the road and it has a bad thumping sound while driving. Bad tire, bad wheel bearing - not sure. By the way - no one answers their phones. The budget rental counter in the same building was well staffed and helping people very quickly. I'm trying them next time. read more

I'd never rented a car that was not entirely clean before this trip. Floor had pieces of popcorn from previous passengers. I wouldn't've cared enough to write a review though if it wasn't for the fact that they tried to charge $100 for a tank of gas that we'd just filled up at the nearest gas station. Their fast break app is a joke, the car and space it told me to go to did not exist. When I went to turn the car in, the employees were too busy having a personal conversation to help me. Horrible rental experience. I have always rented from Enterprise but Avis had a good rate when we went to Chicago. Car was returned and inspected on time on September 14, 2019. On October 17, 2019, I received an e-mail from Avis that the car incurred additional damage and was charged automatically an additional $265.84. This is without any proof and after it was thoroughly inspected by their personnel upon return. I disputed the charges via e-mail and never received a response, just an auto charge on my credit card. I am sorely disappointed and have filed a dispute with the credit card company and will file a complaint with the consumer affairs and the FTC. We examined the car before returning and have witnesses and photos to boot. It is a hassle AND A WASTE OF OUR TIME to deal with this scam of a company. read more

Can I give something a negative review?!?! This was THE WORST CAR RENTAL EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD. The whole time we were thinking to ourselve are we being punked? First of all, we had to wait two hours to even rent the car. Then we finally got the car. As soon as we got in there was a TERRIBLE smoke smell. We complained to the person working in the booth. There were also several pieces of the car missing. He didn't even get out of his booth and told us it was fine. Honestly it was like talking to a wall dealing with every representative. Well what comes in the mail? But a fine of $450 dollars FOR THE SMOKE SMELL. The smoke smell was there BEFORE we bought the car. It was bad enough having to drive around with such an embarassing god-awful smell. But to charge us $450 dollars after the worst experience we have ever had?! Seriously this company is a joke. Zero stars, but of course you can't give that. It appears I have also been a victim of the fraudulent actions of the Chicago O'Hare location, where they claim the vehicle is returned in poor condition and charge hundreds of dollars in cleaning fees. I have only searched Google and Yelp reviews, which turned up several similar situations. This is no coincidence. They claim our van had a heavy smoke odor and sent blurry pictures that seemed to insinuate ashes on the surfaces. Nobody in my family smokes, nor would my wife have gotten in any vehicle that smelled of smoke. Our van had not been recently cleaned and had a couple of pieces of trash, yet nothing too serious to request another one. It certainly didn't smell of smoke when we picked it up or dropped it off, so where did the smoke smell come from? There either wasn't any smoke smell or it happened after I dropped it off. There was one attendant trying to return approximately 40 vehicles, so they do not inspect your vehicle while you are there and 99% of people do not have the time luxury to wait for hours to get an inspection. This is exactly what they want. After you leave, they can claim whatever they want and you have no ability to dispute it. Even if I had pictures or a video , it would not dispute a claim of odor. I have already filed a complaint and been totally dismissed by two different agents. I even provided a picture of my own vehicle showing the exact same dust and flakes as they claim are ashes. I can guarantee my vehicle has never been smoked in. I find their actions appalling and will not settle for this treatment. I was charged $450 and after my Google review, they are giving me a $90 refund. Since these charges and accusations are completely false, anything short of a full refund is unacceptable. I'm heading to the Better Business Bureau and my lawyer next. I will never do business with Avis again. read more

I rented a car here just for several hours. The process was super easy! I booked on-line via Priceline (just a couple hours before pick-up), got a great deal and I was on my way. Once I arrived to the airport location, the line was non-existent, so I was able to get to the counter right away. The gentleman behind the counter was super nice and helped process my order in a quickly. Within a few minutes, I was signed, sealed and delivered. Just outside the building where the cars and mine was a speedy walk from the rental building. At the exit, the clerk checked my ID and the rental agreement and I was out of there right away. Even though getting back to the airport car rental facility got me all sorts of crazy lost because I had to gas up the car, the return process was also pretty easy, so I was done fairly quick. Beware because O'Hare airport is huge and busy, so plan accordingly, folks! read more
