Beware what the agent is offering and make sure to review each screen carefully. I reserved and paid for a car through another website (Priceline). Avis found my reservation no problem and then came the up sales. No problem, I get it, it's part of business. -Do I want the prepaid gas? -No. -Do I want insurance? -Already got it through a 3rd party. Then we got to the toll transponder. Never having driven in the Chicago area, I didn't think I needed one but decided to hear the agent out on why I might need one. I indicated to him that I was looking to keep this rental as cheap as possible. He said there was no extra fee for the transponder unless I used it, and then there would be a nominal fee plus the cost of the toll. I decided it would be a good idea to have just in case, after again confirming there was no extra charge unless I used it. We then went through a series of screens on the keypad where you agree to things. The agent talked me through it. "This one says you're not getting insurance." "This one says you're not doing the gas plan." I just kept clicking "Ok." In retrospect, I know, I should have reviewed more carefully. But I had worked all day, gotten on a 5 hour flight. I just wanted to get my car, get to my destination, and pass out. The car itself was fine. I ended up using toll roads and didn't quite have a full tank of gas so I knew there would be an extra charge from Avis. I expected that. What I was NOT expecting was to see a charge from Avis for nearly the price of the whole rental. I thought maybe it was a "hold" amount or something so I waited a few days to see if it would adjust. Nothing. So I contacted Avis to see what the charge was about. After having to send two or three emails to even get someone to respond, I find that the rental agreement says I agreed to an upgraded vehicle. I said no - there was no mention of an upgrade, I specifically told the agent I didn't want to spend more money. Avis' response was - it says you agreed to it, you can talk to a manager if you want. I called the number given and was told that there was an extended wait to speak to a manager. The agent I was speaking to though said he could authorize a partial refund plus a voucher towards a future rental. I doubt I'll rent from Avis again but in the interest of getting this resolved and not wasting any more time, I agreed. The agent said it could take a few days for the refund to appear. Fast forward nearly a week, the refund is still not showing and Avis has instead made an additional charge for the tolls. So I have had to once again contact Avis to see what the hell is going on. I know this is a long story but the moral is, be careful what you are agreeing to. Obviously, this location has at least one employee willing to prey on the fatigue of its customers and sneak unwanted and unauthorized upgrades. On top of that, dealing with their customer service has been a nightmare. Fair or not, I will be avoiding renting from all Avis locations in the future. While the practices of the Chicago O'Hare location are the only ones I know of that are suspect, it is the company's handling of my complaint that has me turning away from them completely. read more

Warning.. Do not use Avis or Budget. They charged us $450 for a non existent smoke smell at Chicago Ohare. Neither of us smoke and the car was used lightly. When calling back to dispute they gave us the runaround and offered a 50% discount and refused to waive the fee. This is a scam and you should try one of the others. So booked though Costco at noon flight was delay, luggage was delayed, then came to Avis with my reservation the customer Svc agent is yelling at her co-workers and they are also delayed. There was five workers at the counter then only two. When we got up to the counter we find out we can't return the car tomorrow at 2:25pm but at noon because its Costco's reservation and Avis can't change it. Avis customer service then tells us she needs to go outside to find the car because she doesn't know where it's at. My feet are so sore I have to go have a sit from waiting so long. I reserved a car 3 weeks ago and paid for it along w a car seat rental for my 3 year old to arrive and the rep rudely share the rental isn't there and there is no car seat. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! Like other reviewers mentioned, they will SCAM you on the fuel charge. They'll tack it onto your bill and say they'll refund you, but when you return the car, unless you tell them that you're returning it full and MAKE SURE TO CHECK YOUR RECEIPT, they will leave the charge on there. It's a $50-$60 charge!! The person that comes to check your car will go to your wife (or someone that looks easy) and quickly try to get them to sign off on the bill. MAKE SURE THEY DO NOT DO IT!!! I was busy unloading our luggage and she approved the charge only to find out that they had tacked that charge on there. I had to literally run and yell at the guy (he was walking away as fast as humanly possible on purpose because he knew what he did!) that we had a FULL tank of gas and his response was he can't do anything about it and that I had to go to the counter. They'll hope you go to counter (which has a long line for this very purpose!) and see the long wait and just decide to eat the cost. DON'T! Proceed directly to the counter (Budget or Avis, doesn't matter) and tell them that you were incorrectly charged and that you have a plane to catch and if you're late, THEY WILL PAY FOR IT. Again, this was one of the worst rental car place I've every had to deal with. They will get you in on there low rates, but will try to scam you on these hidden charges. Overall the experience at Avis was good. They offered to fill up our tank for cheaper than ANY gas station I could find for 15 miles. I checked! The man who helped us check in was very friendly and helpful. I did get irritated at drop off. I showed up 2 hours before my flight left so that I would have enough time. When I pulled into the lot it was very unorganized and there were employees running around everywhere. When I asked what the next step was to check out I was told 3 different answers by 3 different employees. I was frustrated walking back and forth in the heat multiple times because the employees were not on the same page, but they ended up getting me checked out and on my way. I would definitely rent from them again, just wish things were more clearly marked and employees were trained on the proper procedures. read more

I called to cancel and was told it was $150 when on the website it said $50. The woman I was speaking with transferred me to a "supervisor" who was no help and told me I can dispute it and was going to give me the contact information and then hung up on me as I was talking... and he didnt give me the information. This place adds charges you don't request. It was late at night. We had a 3 hour drive ahead of us. We got severely overcharged. When the agent presented us with a GPS unit, we BOTH asked "Is there an extra charge for this?" and the agent responded "No, it's in the rate". This was an outright lie. In addition to the car rental fees, we were charged $43 for gas, $7 for roadside assistance and $30 for the GPS. We found out later that this deception is a common practice at this location in order for an agent to boost his/her commission. Avis corporate refunded the gas charge, but this location is not owned and operated by Avis Corp so they couldn't undo the GPS and roadside assistance charge. read more

Renting while black? Then pass on Avis car rental. I rented a car today and to my surprise, the employees didn't believe that I was the renter even though my wife and I had already paid. Maybe everyone won't have the same experience but this type of microaggression is the lived experience for many black people and other people of color. I will be on the lookout for this from other car rental companies but rest assured, Avis/Budget won't be receiving my hard-earned money from this point forward. It absolutely kills me to write this review because I "had" a five star experience with this facility when my Mom was dying in December of '07 and I had to get cars for my self and my brother as mine was in the shop and he was holding a vigil with me. The staff here was super accommodating and even upgraded the vehicle for me as a courtesy given the circumstances. They were fast, efficient and friendly. When the SUV got a flat tire at my Mom's funeral (thats how things go for me. Sad but true), they gladly allowed me to switch cars with the spare tire on and kindly helped me transfer all the flowers and things from the ordeal when I returned the car. They were so thoughtful and caring. So much so that I brought them a beautiful Fruit Flower arrangement as a thank you when our business dealings were concluded. So I bet you are wondering why on earth I would give them a one star review aren't you? Well, today, March 5, 2009 I received a bill from them claiming there was bumper damage from the car I returned (with the flat tire) on the day of the funeral and exchanged for a new one, which I returned five days later. I caused no damage to the car and only drove it back and forth from the hospice care set up and home three times in the two week period, with occasional stops at my restaurant to check in on my business. There was no accident or valet service or close parking situations. There was no damage when I returned it. But they sent me a bill for $1,200.00 in damage that wasn't documented until December 27 '07, more than a week after I returned the car in question and two days after I returned the other car. Not to mention the repairs they had done were charged at excessive rates. And they notified me on March 5, 2009 that there was an issue. Unfortunately for them, I actually think I still have the paper work in a file somewhere. The paperwork that they signed off on stating the vehicle was returned as rented, save the flat tire which wasn't even mentioned as an issue. No one will answer the phone at the claim center. Just a bunch of forms and copies of the estimates and no letter of explanation Interesting. I may call the manager of this location and see if he can intervene. They picked the wrong person to try and pin this on, especially given the circumstances that required my need for a rental. read more

Awful awful awful place. The other reviewers nailed it - they quote reasonable prices online then they majorly screw you with the fees. The guy at the Avis counter could barely see the screen. He couldn't tell me anything about the minimum day requirements bc his vision was too poor. Told me to call the 1800 number, which I did, but their servers were down for hours. No one tried to help me - the operators were just sitting around waiting. They kept telling me to call back in 20 min. One outsourced operator tried to be very friendly but had absolutely no power to help me. All he could do is transfer me to a domestic operator who also had no power to do anything. Ugh. With so much competition out there, so much technology, and so many outlets for users to be heard - it's just shocking to get customer service like this in freaking 2013. I have to say that I am completely and unexpectedly surprised with Avis here at O'Hare. When it comes to big airports, you usually get impersonal service at best. The crew at this station, however, must be one the best rental car crews anywhere. Whatever each worker is doing, they all do their jobs well. My status with Avis does confer special considerations (and I won't bore you with them ), but time and time again the level of service is consistently good. One example I will share... during some torrential rains in September that caused flooding at the airport's lower arrival levels, they sent a shuttle just to pick me up from the upper levels. I had reserved an intermediate car, but they insisted that I take a Hummer H3 just in case. And I'm glad I did, as I had to ford a few waterlogged streets that day. Outstanding service probably because of my status, but I do believe that trickles down to the regular renter as well. Also important... they have tons of shuttle buses circulating so that I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes to be picked up from the terminals. If you're a road warrior, then you understand how important this is. Not only would I rent from them again, I would highly recommend them... which is a big deal considering it's a car rental company! read more

When I arrived, the taxes and fees were 3 times higher than estimated and my overall rental was 40% higher than the quoted price. They get away with this since after a long flight, the last thing a person wants to do is shop around for a rental. Plus, you just took their bus to get there. Uneven counter help - some seemed like zombies (it was midnight, but still). LOOOOONG wait to get the car - no, I'm not Avis an anything-worth-spit instant-getaway lookout member. Nor will I be. The zombies leave the counter frequently in mid-dialog with other putrefying travelers, walking aimlessly outside in lot.... (this can't be good... I start anticipating the rehearsed CS line that will tell me there ARE NO CARS YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME IT'S MIDNIGHT! Actually, I thought I lucked out... when I finally get to the front of the line my rep (not a zombie, thanks) sadly informs me I'd have to take a minivan... and I said, "hallelujah, it has wheels and a motor let's go!" but he said "no, let me try" and disappeared before I could keep him there. More minutes pass. Proud agent returns, I GOT YOU A COROLLA!!! Now THAT makes my early morning! You know, like when your cat leaves a mess of rodent entrails on the mat outside your door? Finish paperwork, sprint to car, set mirrors, get tollway change and bills ready (frack) and head for the EXIT... but, NOOOOO! there is another line, about 8-10 cars not moving at the one open exit lane. After about 10-15 minutes, kid you not, a manager comes out of the doomed building and heads to the zombie-staffed exit kiosk... i don't know what he found there but it couldn't have been too good because he started examining rental agreements and radioing (50'!) to open the bus gate to let a car out at a time. finally my turn, he waves me to the bus gate and radios in... but wait, but wait, but wait... WHY AM I WAITING? I'm thinking of just crashing thru the little wood board separating me from my drive to some sleep, when the zombie is heard to radio ... "uh, that one?"..... Seriously the worst customer service in the history of customer service. I give them more than a star due to the fact that a) they had my car ready and b) it was an automatic upgrade. But while I'm at it, why is it that anytime I reserve a friggin economy car and I automatically get an SUV??? I mean, I'm not complaining, since I don't get an upcharge. But still, I want an economy car, give me a damn economy car. Anyway getting back was a complete debacle. Now, I returned my car off hours (after midnight). Usually you drop the car off, someone on staff comes up, checks the gas gauge, checks the mileage and you're on your way. The signs had you go WAY out of the way (I actually rented from the Budget side, not the Avis). So I parked it, had to flag an attendant down (did I mention it was 1 in the morning???) and the person tells me, "Oh you need to go inside." OK. It would have been nice to know that BEFORE I parked the damn thing. So I go inside, after walking like a 1/4 mile to the office. Then they say, "Oh you didn't see the sign?" uh, what sign. There's a green arrow you park the car here. Hmmm. It's fucking DARK and there's poor LIGHTING in the parking lot and you expect me to distinguish a green arrow (meanwhile there were like 800 signs pointing to where I left the damn car). So I bring it around (did I mention it was 1 am?), and bring the contract to the place. The guys asks me about mileage. I say "8320" - hubby says "Oh, I thought it was 8230". It wouldn't be beyond me to transpose the numbers, I do that sometimes. So the guy disgustingly grabs my keys and says "***SIGH*** Be right back." I mean, hey, you want me to say THANKS FOR DOING YOUR JOB, I won't. Because by all accounts you fucking people need to CHECK MY GAS GAUGE (so that I'm not charged six hundred dollars for having a full tank because you're an asshole) and my mileage...you need to check that shit anyway. Oh and the other redeeming quality is that even at 1 am, the shuttle bus to the airport still ran. Miss Tiffany Taylor was our driver. She was very polite and courteous. And dropped us off at the hotel transportation stop, which was not supposed to be her stop, but she was still good about it. She gets at least the other 1/2 star. Maybe the full star. As always, I booked a reservation through priceline. Named my price and got the vehicle I wanted. No problems there. Priceline is fantastic for rental cars! Get to the rental counter and Avis is so backed up that the Budget guy says he can help me. They are partners and share the space so of course I go over. The guy is pleasant enough, asks me where I'm going... "Oh, you'll want a vehicle with a toll transponder. Sure. We have a Toyota Venza with that. Is that big enough? (I paid for an SUV - Ford Escape) Yes. OK." What he didn't tell me was that he was going to charge $35/day for an upgrade! That is what I was already paying per day. I didn't even catch wind of the extra charge until I saw it on my statement. As if I wanted to double my bill by switching from an Escape to a freakin' Venza? The good news is: I called customer service and was politely treated and refunded the "upgrade charge." So 5 stars for customer service on the phone, but screw the in airport counter for trying to pull a fast one on me. read more

Very convenient, the shuttle runs very often. Takes directly to their lot. Avis and Budget shares the same building. They'll get you right in doesn't take long to get out. Same thing about returning your vehicle. Easy out, jump on the shuttle and they'll drop you off at your terminal. Really have no complaints. read more

It's clear that many things about O'Hare are quiet chaotic and poorly planned. Unfortunately, renting a car at O'Hare is just as much of a hassle as everything else. The location in relation to the terminal is a pain. But this isn't unique to Avis. All of the rental cars are well removed from the terminals and a shuttle bus is required. It's a good 10 minutes from terminal to the main rental car facilities plus the wait for the bus. It was nice that there was a dedicated Avis Preferred station to move things along once I arrived. But exiting the property took a while as there was only one exit lane available and lots of exiting cars. Service wasn't memorable; not good or bad. Just prompt. I suppose that's all I can ask for. Now if only they could do something about those high taxes and fees! read more

I reserved a brand new Mustang Convertible for pickup at Avis's Chicago O'Hare location this past week to take on a roadtrip to Florida. I was originally quoted a price of $60.15 per day, with unlimited mileage. It took nearly two hours for me to get a car and I did not get the convertible that I was promised. Instead, I got a Camaro with over 37,000 miles, very dirty interiors to the point where the stick shift, steering wheel, and handles to open the doors were very sticky with some type of syrup. The carpeting had not been vacuumed and it looked like they had just hosed the car down before handing it over to me. Mechanically, the vehicle clearly needed a tune up. Whenever I'd come to a stop light, the car would shake a lot. When I first took it for a fill-up at a gas station, I checked the oil and it needed a full quart! The tires also had very little tread on them. It's apparent that Avis does not put a premium on maintenance of their fleet. I was so disappointed with this rental that I decided to return it 3 days early in Florida. The attendant at the Naples, FL location, David, did not want to listen to what I had to say. Instead, he hit me with a rental charge for 5 days instead of 4 days and at $100.99 per day instead of the $60.15 price that I was originally quoted on my reservation. I used Priceline.com to rent a car from AVIS/Budget at O'Hare airport. The original plan was to pick up the car on a Wednesday at 3pm and return the car by Friday at 3pm. However, my holiday plans changed. I no longer needed to wait until three to pick up the car. I went to the airport, this morning, thinking that AVIS/Budget rental would allow me to adjust my reservation to Wednesday 10am - Friday 10am. At the counter, I was told by two employees that I would have to pay an extra fee, since my actually Priceline reservation didn't start until 3pm. I thought AVIS/Budget had the same policy as HERTZ. Very rarely I spend the time to write reviews. Like most of you it takes extremely bad service to motivate me to jump online. Its frustrating and disheartening to be treated so poorly and bullied by corporations like these. Generally, I rent my vehicles from Hertz. They were sold out! This forced me to scramble and do business with Avis. Initially, I was happy that Avis had cars available. When I got to the counter I was happy to see they sold car chargers! That was the end of my pleasant experience. Once I spoke to the Avis employee it immediately became a battle over insurance and other add ons. I clearly stated I only needed the vehicle and that my corporate rate included basic coverage. She continued to "dance" of sorts around the topic to obtain my basic approval on insurance to justify adding on larger coverage's. Eventually I had to keep responding "I only need basic coverage- I don't want to pay anything extra". After 30 minutes the contract prints! She added additional coverage! I had to wait another 10 minutes for her to reprocess the rental agreement and take off the addons. What's sad is that she was a nice lady. I blame the culture of Avis and this particular management staff. I rent cars regularly and I understand that they are all pushed to sale insurance packages. This was clearly slamming premiums onto peoples rentals without approval. I know this happens to less aggressive people every single day. This particular branch must be taking advantage of people who just rather get out of the airport. Don't let them slam these additional add ons onto your rate... THE NIGHTMARE continues... I picked up the vehicle June 26th and returned it on the 28th. When I arrived back in LA I received a $600 charge on my card. I called customer care and was transferred to the local branch. They never answered their phone. After calling back to customer care and escalating my complaint eventually they were able to get in touch with someone at the branch. I explained the situation to (Jamella) and was told that they called me for additional information and because I did not answer they were not able to close my reservation. Very odd due to the fact that when I dropped off the car the associate told me everything was good to go. I was traveling on a plane it shouldn't be a surprise that they could not get a hold of me. What is there to talk about? The car had no damage and I filled up the gas tank. I asked for a manager when I was speaking to Jamella but she insisted on handling the situation. She determined that I was in fault and directed me to speak to Loss Prevention. At that point I asked for the manager directly. I escalated the call to the manager, Bradley . He explained that I should have waited for a receipt and despite dropping the keys off and being told I was "good to go" by the associate... I was in the wrong. (NOTHING to do with obtaining additional information) He went on to say the contract is closed and he could not reverse the $600 charge. He would have to email his adjustment department and request the credit. Who knows how long this will take but I suppose its better then nothing. This was a very disappointing experience. From the rude clerk, to the awful car. I've rented many times from Avis with no problems, but this was not good. The car was in very bad condition, scratches and dents everywhere, and smelled horrible. I picked it up in the middle of the night, so it was dark and couldn't see the extent of the filth until the nest day. But first, when I first started it, the tire pressure light was on, 17 lbs on 1 tire and 20 on the rest. It had already taken an hour to get through the line and could not imagine getting in line again, so I went to a gas station to put air in the tires, which I had to do every day while I had the car. The washer fluid was empty, and another alarm kept sounding because evidently there was a headlight out. Then in daylight I could see how filthy the car was. And it sounded awful going up hills, I was afraid a couple times that it wouldn't make it...and this is just Illinois little hills!! I'm very disappointed with this entire experience. My issues with Avis aren't regarding their selection of cars, because they are good, nor is it the cleanliness of their cars, which is also good. My problem is that it looks like Avis, along with many of their competitors engage in a fuel scam. My wife and I returned our car with a full tank of gas. The gas guage was clearly full when the employee printed out our final receipt and said I was good to go. I then noticed that the receipt listed that the tank was half full. I explained this to the employee and she attempted to correct it with a new receipt. However, this one came out as half full as well. She directed me to the office, where a very disinterested man fixed it for us without so much as an apology. If 100 people a day are conned by this, just think of the money Avis is making off of this, just think of the money Avis is raking in. Oh, and if you are thinking of going to another rental car company at O'Hare, Hertz O'Hare does the same thing. Only difference is it took two weeks for them to correct their mistake. read more

11 PM one cashier and 5 people in the line. Each person takes 15 min to get out. They don't have enough cashier or vans. Last time I came I rented through my company an intermediate car... They gave me a luxury one without letting me know they were giving me something more expensive. Conclusion: my company won't reimburse and I will have to pay from my pocket $200. WAY TO GO, Avis. Avis is pretty good in general.. I like the free upgrades and the ability to change cars. Chicago avis was a bit disappointing.. We were given a minivan with no other choices of upgrade at preferred. we managed to get the standard avis rep to upgrade us to an Escalade for $20 bucks a day well worth it. I wish the preferred rep had offered it to us. Also the drive to the terminal is about 15 minutes, along with all of the other car companies and the parking lot is confusing. read more

Our rental was hit in the parking lot at the High Ridge Y in Chicago. We came out, saw the damage and called the manager of this location on Thursday, 3/17/16. I left a detailed message as to what happened, my rental agreement number, my name and phone number. It is now five days later, and the manager has yet to return my phone call. It was almost impossible to reach an agent on the local Avis number, and the 800 number wasn't much better. It took several calls and almost thirty minutes to speak to anyone. On the other hand, our rep Ernesto, upon checking out the car on 3/15/16, was a shining example of customer service. Our car was clean but dinged up. Chicago weather is brutal on vehicles, so I'm giving them a pass on that. Returning our damaged rental was a breeze too, miraculously we had collision on our rental which I'm sure made it easy. read more

DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM HERE! I am amazed by all of the good reviews for this Avis. In 2009 I reserved a Trail Blazer Intermediate SUV months in advance but when I went to pick it up they had a Dodge Journey waiting for me. Yes, you read that correctly, a Dodge Journey. Please note that the SUV was going to be used to transport 5 adults and several pieces of luggage. Essentially, there was NO way we would have fit in the Journey (which is essentially the size of a freaking station wagon) and would certainly not have reserved a vehicle of that size. Of course when we noticed the mistake and mentioned it to the Avis store manger he assured us that the two vehicles were INDEED comparable or in Avis terms, "similar." Wow Avis, really? So, with our logic against theirs our only option was a $200 upgrade to a Mountaineer. We got taken and couldn't do shit about it. I am sure the manager gets some sort of kickback for every upgrade they are able to con or convince a customer into making. Oh! And when we returned the car we had the customer service lady call us a cab and after waiting a ridiculous 40 minutes (the airport is teaming with cabs!) a man shows up in a Lincoln Town Car (with no meter) and tells us that he is our driver. This shop pulled a fast one on my senior citizen husband and scammed us. We had prepaid the bill with Satellite Radio, and of course I told the AARP-Expedia rep, who was booking for us, that we DID not need any other Optional Services. But what happened? Since we got a nice discount ($250) for booking through AARP-Expedia, the Avis Dallas Love Field counter rep charged us for Roadside Assistance ($47.94) even though he never asked my husband at time of signing. And of course, the husband never thought to review the document before he signed because I told him exactly what we were paying for before the trip commenced So AVIS will try to get as much discount back. BEWARE!. I plan on contacting AARP and Expedia to let them know how this shop scammed us. read more
