I received a letter from AVIS dated 7/18/22 claiming that I was being charged $125.00 due to "excessive interior dirt-sand." When I complained, they sent me a report with photos. The photos do NOT show anything "excessive" as claimed in that letter. There was "no excessive dirt" noted in these photos, nor any "sand" as claimed in the report. In fact, AVIS's own report which allegedly supports this charge specifically uses the term "light" in reference to the alleged dirt. So its own report admits there was nothing excessive. When I complained, the Cust Service Rep asked me if I had any photos to show the car's condition. Why would anyone do that? She also suggested I take photos next time I rent. There will not be a next time as I will no longer use AVIS. read more

Avoid this company. Especially if you're renting from a third party (Priceline, Kayak, etc). Avis will charge you taxes and fees that you already paid the third party. Avis will mislead you into getting optional services. And then when you question it while signing the agreement, you'll be told "it's just a formality and the charges won't appear once the car is returned". And then when you contact customer service about it, they point you back to the agreement and say there's nothing they can do. read more

I had a reservation with Avis for the end of April 2021. Booked the vehicle for $425 out of Fort Myers FL. Doing some pre vacation checking I realized I forgot to add a car seat for my 2 yr old. Went on the Avis website to add, charge of $70 plus tax. Received a new email confirmation of the booking for $508. Logged back in to my Avis account to check only to see a new balance of $1,147. After calling Avis they told me that because I "modified" the booking, I had to pay the new rate. Over an hour on the phone and they refused to adjust the price, or honor the original. To make matters worse, when I asked what would they have done if I had just shown up and asked for a car seat at the airport, their response was "you would just pay the daily rate for it" read more

Rental car broke down in middle of downtown Boston. Took several hours to get towed to airport for another vehicle. A few weeks later, AVIS charged my credit card for $346 for the roadside service. Their car broke down and I get billed to tow the vehicle. I will NEVER use AVIS (or their affiliate Budget) again! read more

Timely pick by the shuttle at the airport.. the staff is always friendly and courteous... All special requests for the car were taken care of (winter travel as well as toll road package)... If I could give a negative for their "service" it would be at least a -45. Not only was my RESERVED car not available for pickup the "substitute" had completely bald tires which almost caused an accident. The replacement car I received after almost a full day on the phone with several different people turned out not to be safe to drive either. They clearly don't service their cars at all. So another half the day I spoke to several different people about actually getting a safe car to drive it was impossible to arrange because I could never get the same person back on the phone and apparently she didn't put anything in the notes about our hour and a half conversation. The vehicle that eventually got dropped off is all banged up and has obvious body damage. If you're looking for a rental place for a car AVIS SHOULD BE THE LAST OPTION. I'd rather take an Uber from North Carolina to Chicago than try to get a car from those people. If you can even call them that. read more

Avis O'Hare consistently disappoints. Cars are often dirty on the inside and/or noticeably scratched on the outside. Don't be surprised if the gas is not full when you pick up or there are error messages flashing on the dashboard. Avis is a decent company, just not at this location. read more

Pathetic pathetic pathetic service. Marketa is the name of lady who was assisting us and she was horrribbbbblllle She kept on talking to other people and we were standing there. She was not even talking business but some random stuff to her colleagues as if she is in a cafe. Then she told us some different rates from what we got at rental.com and said our manager is not honoring those rates . Then we were thinking about it and she said we will have to make a decision right away or come back in line. TO MY SURPRISE, SHE MEANT US TO COME AFER 20 CUSTOMERS AND JOIN THE LINE AGAIN. I MEAN WTFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!! Like we can take 5 mins to decide and what happened when we were waiting for you to finish your fucking stupid conversation. We are running late and it took us more than an hour to just get the rental from Payless. Yup we took a different rental. Moreover, they have changed their location which is not even updated. Seriously sooooooo disappointed. Have been to car rentals at many places but this was horrible. read more

Rented vehicle for a family member's out of state wedding in North Carolina: Vehicle reserved at Raleigh International Airport: Besides the over 1 hour wait in line & the horrible customer service with "Trainee" with the nastiest attitude to pick up my reserved van. Not only did they give me a Hybrid vehicle I did not request, turns out it was not fully charged & my family & I ended up getting stranded at 8pm on a very busy dark highway, left there waiting for over 2 hours for the road side assistance NOT to show up! Those 2 hours of waiting hungry & cold, no luck reaching customer service! Once you do, they hang up on you! Once you do, they lie to you! State Patrol showed up & told us we could no longer wait at side of road. Had to contact a family member to pick us up. The following morning I attempted many many failed times to obtain a replacement vehicle, was told a share ride would be me up to take me to pick up another vehicle. Which they never did, they lied! By that time it was already 12pm. I had to obtain an Uber myself to drive me to another airport an hour away to pick up the vehicle. When we arrived around 1pm, they did not have a vehicle registered for me to pick up!! It was a coincidence there was a vehicle available. By the time we arrived back, I had an hour to get ready for the wedding. Very disappointed with AVIS, I will never rent a vehicle from them. They left us in a very dangerous situation! read more

Avis is a horrible company and their practices border on insane. I am Avid Preferred which is just complete rubbish. Their customer service is non-existent. they do not care at all about taking your money and offering crap service. The cars are old and unsafe. at ORD airport in Chicago right now and it is a giant mess. the Avis Preferred line is out the door which begs the question why have a loyalty service if you don't know how to make it work. Please avoid Avis at all locations. It is not worth it at all!! read more

This is the worst Avis I've ever been to. Long lines, employees seem very unhappy and worst of all, THEY ADD FRAUDULENT CHARGES when you turn in the car. I returned the car with a completely full tank of gas and they charged me just under $100 for gas! When I contacted them, they refused to help. I contested the charge with my American Express card and they couldn't help as it's in the Avis contract at this location. I love Avis in California and I'm shocked at how terrible the one at O'hare is and how shockingly different it is run. Horrible experience. read more

Well let's see...let's just say that all the reviews that are 1 star are correct, the service is awful. Once again, if you don't like your job and you are unhappy with your life...change it! I saved $200 by canceling my reservation and going to enterprise. They don't tell you that it costs an extra $140 to rent from the airport. I took a $14 Uber to a different location that wasn't located at the airport and the service was outstanding!! After reading all of the reviews, the one star reviews are not lying. I went through the whole thing and couldn't even leave the parking garage because they gave me the wrong contract and my name did not match with my drivers license. This is after I went to my parking spot and there was no car. I had had to go back to the front desk to get another car and then had to go back again because of the wrong contract. The car smelled pretty bad, like someone used it to deliver pizza...it did not run good at all. The whole experience was eye opening, I have learned now. Somebody needs to remove their head from their butt and pay attention to who they hire. This is your managers fault, fire him or her. That person is costing you thousands of dollars. I'm in front of thousands of people everyday and I'm going to make a shirt that says AVIS SUCKS! So I can send the message about this scam company. I will never use Avis!!! Or Budget!! Ever again!!! And I promise to tell every single person that I know not to use your company's!! read more

SCAMMERS !! Experience similar to others but at Budget which is the same company and run by the same employees at O'Hare. 2 weeks after dropping off the vehicle at ORD we were informed via mail that our credit card would be charged 450 USD due to ash and smoke in the vehicle. My wife and I rented the vehicle for a day. We landed in the am, stopped for breakfast, and then parked the car in the NBC tower for a few hours till our business was done and then we had lunch and made a couple of stops and then dropped the car at the airport. Neither of us smoked in the car nor ever smoked in our lives; nor did we even eat in the car. Neither our house nor our clothes smell of smoke. Their agent even sat in our car after we dropped it off and never said a word about ash or smoke. After I called up to protest this charge, I was told it was legitimate. I requested to speak to a manager and none was available and they told me one would call me back and so far no one has. Similar scams by this outfit are being reported on Yelp for Budget and Avis. Interestingly I found the Avis-Budget Code of Conduct online which refers to competing fairly, not tolerating corruption, integrity, etc. read more

So this was the first time that I had ever rented from this particular Avis so all of it was new to me.  There's a downstairs counter, so that's where I headed first after getting off the bus from the airport (because that's how you have to get here). Michelle was at the counter, it was early in the morning, but 'good morning' was not the first thing out of her mouth. In fact she didn't even say 'hello'. I said, "Hello, I have a reservation" and handed her my confirmation number and she just asked for my ID. When she ran my ID she said that because I was a preferred member that I needed to go upstairs, she gave me directions and I thanked her, she didn't say anything, not 'you're welcome', not 'have a good day', nothing.  Upstairs was a lovely experience! When you get upstairs, there is a digital board with your name on it and the parking space that your car is in. Head to that spot, the keys are already in it. They will check you out at the gate. It's super easy!  When I returned the rental, there is a gas station near by and so you can fill the car up there. Take the car back to level two and pull up to the return lanes. Leave the keys in the car and hand the attendant your reservation papers. That's it. Then you can head downstairs to the shuttle area to get a ride to your terminal. They will email you the receipt. read more

I don't know why I rent with anyone else - ever! Airport: After a previous unsatisfactory experience with Routes Car rental and over an hour of my life gone FOREVER - I arrived at Avis rental counter (see my other review). Made a reservation via priceline.com while at counter of Routes Car Rental. Routes Office: You know the counters at the airport? Well, this is should be familiar to you. Pick a counter; pick a line. Customer Experience: Met with a nice lady. She pulled up my reservation that I made all of 20- or 30-minutes prior. She confirmed my reservation; ran my credit card for my $100-dollar deposit; confirmed the fuel-efficient car reserved was available and I was on my way in less than 30 minutes. I love that you finish at the counter and just go up the escalator, locate your car and get in to drive. So easy! AND it is equipped with the e-Toll boxes, so you don't need to stress about the cashless tolls - when Avis is billed it is simply posted to your previous method of payment. Ok. I like that. No extra administrative costs? Nope. OK - gotta love that. Dropoff? Drive your car to return; get out, leave the keys in the car; attendant checks you out; you are on your way to the terminal. Easy peasy! Head to the plane. read more

I'm generally intimidated by O'Hare. The airport is big, you walk long distances to the gate, and nothing is worse than being stuck here due to weather. And then there's the traffic. Actually, when I travel from ORD to Michigan City, it's not too bad and with a nearby Oasis to gas up before returning the rental car. And in some ways, it's an easier option that Midway via Cicero Avenue. The Avis lot and the shuttle bus service is not so intimidating. It's pretty straightforward to reach and to plot your destination path. The bus runs frequently, the bus drivers are nice and polite, and the extra burden after and before a flight are manageable. One big word of caution: Make sure your car has a toll road transponder. Otherwise, you may be in trouble within the first few miles of leaving O'Hare. read more

My husband and I decided to rent an SUV with Avis on our week long visit to Chicago. We waited for the shuttle on a real early Wednesday morning (a little before 6 am Chicago time) and were eventually whisked away to the Avis Rent A Car place in no time. We ended up getting a black Nissan Rogue that was clean and had a full tank of gas ready to go for us. The only thing that I thought was kind of funny about our rental was that it had an out of state license plate, from New Jersey (so if we drove badly or cut someone off, a local Chicagoan probably thought 'darn you lousy Jersey people'). Anyways, the car drove like a dream. We found no problems with our rental and was pleased with the assigned car. But when we were returning the car back, we had a hard time trying to figure out where to enter to return it. There were no signs to direct us to return the car and the GPS could only take us so far. So that was rather frustrating and a little stressful as we were trying to make sure we would make our flight in time. Service for when we picked up the car was a long wait but friendly. Returning the car was quick and easy. The employees who drove the shuttle to and from were also friendly and helpful. I would rent a car from Avis again (by the way, they share the same lot as Budget). read more

BEWARE! I booked my wife's rental for 26 days via Costco Travel expect it to be a smooth experience. My wife had to return her car a few days sooner and was charged a different rate for it, we ended up was charged more for the trip. A few days later, we were charged with $450, we contacted Costco and was told that's due to spill and SMOKE DAMAGE. My wife does not smoke, she did not spill anything in the car, barely drive the car. AVIS WOULD NOT REIMBURSE the charge, wanted to give us a $322.99 credit and 3 days rental credit. i DON'T WANT A CREDIT, I DON'T WANT TO EVER RENT WITH AVIS again. The email correspondence is pretty dead set on not giving us a refund - Jason O. 1 month later, we get charge another $450 for the same thing! Costco travel wasn't helpful and let Avis charge whatever they want. I still have not received my proof of damage yet! you know why? because there's never any damage to start with! AVOID AT ALL COST! Update: they got back to us, claiming that there's animal hair in the car, stains on seat, still no proof of damage yet... read more

I wanted to give them a second chance but was a big mistake. This is my absolutely last time renting with Avis ! Besides my check engine light coming on, I was 1 hour late in retuning the car due to the check engine light and they charged me for another whole day. I had prepaid 393.98 for my usage. And added tolls at 12 a day even though I only used one toll one day, they charged me for 5 days at 12.00. I told rude ass girl the issues we were having and she cut me off and called the manager who said they wasn't much he could do besides take off 50% for one extra day even though again I was 1 hour late in retiring the car. Does what it says on the tin. Nothing special, nothing out of the ordinary. I've put Avis on my "no-fly" list based on a previous experience (pre-Yelp) but for this engagement, my customer chose the itinerary and I had no choice. O'Hare has several terminals and the rental car areas are a short shuttle bus ride away - I had to find the right exit and wait outside in the cold while everyone else's shuttle bus went by until mine (full, of course) arrived. Competent driver who got us to the parking area with a minimum of swaying or hard stops. Rental counter agent (since I'm not in the Avis elite group that gets to go straight to the car) went over the paperwork politely and didn't try to upsell me on the insurance. The car was a standard rental - a Nissan something with four doors. It was clean and didn't smell of the stuff they use to remove cigarette smoke. Gas tank was full and all the electronics worked fine. It was a reasonable and completely forgettable car. Exiting from the lot to the highway and finding the car to return it was easy - plenty of signs and lots of arrows. The return agent asked to see my fill-up receipt and then handed me my return slip. I can't say I would rent from them again - I still won't do Avis - but if you do, then you'll be fine. read more

I accidentally locked my keys in my trunk, and it turned into a $1000 mistake, and stranded me in a city with no housing, transport, or luggage. I left my hotel at 7am for an 11am flight. At 7:30 I realized I locked my keys in the trunk. I figured shouldn't be a problem I just need to get a new key from AVIS and open the trunk and i'll be on my way. Nope. Avis does not allow you to get an extra key. So instead their solution was to have me towed and have the trunk opened at the rental location. I later learned that there was no one at this location that could open the trunk. I went through 5 service companies. Finally 7 hours later that 5th tow company was able to get it towed to the AVIS rental lot at the airport. where I was instructed to bring the car. In between everyone of these tow companies I had to start from scratch with a new customer service representaive that has no idea what was going on. During this time I must have waited well over 6 hours in total on hold, I missed my flight, and when I finally got the car to the location AVIS told me to bring it, they coudn't open the trunk, so they told me to submit a lost item report and just wait (mind you I'm visiting and every day I "just wait" I'm spending a lot of money. What they didn't tell me was that they were continuing to charge me for the car I had already returned to the location they specified. This has been one of the most stressful days of my life, and AVIS has done nothing to help me, direct me, or inform me about what needs to happen. Getting in touch with customer servie is next to impossibe and when you do get them, they're just reading off of a script like a robot would. No human touch. No critical thinking skills. I will never. EVER. Use AVIS again. Quite honestly no one should. Even the smallest of issues will cause you problems. The customer service is abysmal - almost less helpful than the 1000 robo menus you have to go through that redirect you to the wrong department over and over again. Not enough terrible words to put here. read more

Avis is my car rental company of choice and usually they provide decent service. Avis at O'Hare Airport does not come close to meeting the standard I've come to expect. For starters the bus pickup at the terminal takes FOREVER. I stand there and watch buses for all the other companies go by 2-3 times. Unacceptable Avis. Next, I'm an Avis Preferred member and Avis offers us a service where once the flight lands they send an email with the specifics of the rental (car info and space numbers where the car is located). It's a great service if/when they send the email. Two out of my last 3 rentals at O'Hare I've not received an email. And to make matters worse, my name was not on the Preferred board. I end up in line with other 'Preferred' customers who've encountered the same issue. This results in an additional ~30 minute delay as there's only one person working the 'Preferred' counter. And it always seems the person at the counter is new or in training as they're always calling someone else to get instructions on what to do. And they do this for each customer in line. The car return process is usually smoother. Occasionally they are swamped with a large number of returns an only have 2 people on staff to handle the volume. C'mon Avis, please get it together at O'Hare so you can remain my 'Preferred' car rental company of choice. read more

In 2020 I rented from Avis in ORD and two months after I returned the car a $450 charge appeared on my CC for "Smoking in the vehicle". I am a non-smoker who would not drive a car that smelled of smoke. It took many letters to their Customer Service Manager to finally get the charges reversed. I was in a bind in ORD this weekend and foolishly rented from them again. I had the agent upon return (I have his name) verify the vehicle was in good shape and no additional charges would appear on my e-receipt. First time renting from this new facility at O'Hare airport and I was surprised at the ease and efficiency compared to the last several times I rented at the previous location. Didn't take 10 min from walking in to sitting in the car. It was later in the evening so I'm sure that played a part but nevertheless it was streamlined very well. Car was great, price was decent. What else can you hope for? Counter rep was polite, explained what I needed to know clearly and I had no issues with the vehicle during my stay. I have yet to return the vehicle but I'm sure it will be just as easy. Update..... The car rental return was even easier than the pickup. It's a Monday morning, at one of the busiest airports in the country, and they don't have any cars. If you can't handle the business of providing people with short term car rentals based on the reservations they made (so they gave you a hint they were coming) then for God's sake get out of the business and make way for somebody competent to take over the business. This was was a pathetic display of just how badly the car rental business has gone down the tubes. Oh - and for extra credit - the outside "Preferred Line" was out the door and not moving. If i could give zero stars i certainly would. So my husband and i rented a car at avis ohare location. The check-in process went smooth. We were given lot #c47 to pickup the vehicle. So we walk from lot j to c47 and when we get there NO CAR!!!!!. We go to the customer service counter, the lady quickly rushes us to another car. We ask for a free upgrade due to the inconvenience, she proceeds to get an attitude and states "this is an upgrade." So i inquire about the car next to the one she had offered us and she, with no hesitation says "no unless you want to pay the $30 upcharge." So we settle for what was offered. So when we start the vehicle the service light was on. We walk back to the counter. They then offer us a Ford Titanium, wtf is that. This was the smallest, ugliest car i had ever seen in my life.
