I'm in shock that I haven't written a review for Avignone's yet. Embarassing, because I LOVE THIS BAR...it's one of those places where you don't have to give a rat's @$$ about how you look, because honestly nobody gives a sh*t. It's a hole in the wall bar that's decorated with cheesy (but i love them) jumbo christmas lights, old red leather booths, and a restroom that hasn't been updated since Reagan was in office. BUT you come here for the cheap drinks ($3-5 a drink), dive bar atmosphere, juke box/pool tables, and bring good company. It's definitely a local's hangout and I absolutely love it. Kim is a really sweet and personable bartender and you can tell she's been at this place for a while because she knows EVERYBODY. Whether you're here to get a night cap alone, with a group of friends, or whether you're here to get MESSED UP, it doesn't matter. It'll be a good time if you're in good company. Side note: CASH ONLY, but there's a chase and a BoA across the street so it's not really a big deal. read more

I love this place. The bartender is always awesome, the jukebox is pricey but at least is one of those computer dealios where you can pick whatever god-awful music you want (me? I'm a Cracker fan, thanks), there's pool and darts, and, the highlight of it all... REAL NAUGAHYDE. I know many of you are probably "Save the Naugas" activists, but there's nothing like real naugahyde against my thighs to really make me feel at home. I've met some of the friendliest, most interesting people in this bar. This bar singlehandedly made me like my general region (even though I'm closer to the Sundown). I think they've stopped letting people smoke in the bar, so if you're into that, you should not assume it's allowed. And no, there's no beer on tap. Avignone's used to be the place to meet on Friday nights and have a few drinks and socialize with friends. I had not been there since the new owners took over. Unfortunately I would not come back, don't get me wrong the cleanup of the bar was well overdue and it came out great. However, the service and the bartending skills lack tremendously. I went in to check it out after attending a play for a simple margarita....The bartender was not welcoming nor proficient. I got a small, did I say small glass of ice with little to none of the required ingredients. Such a disappointment for $9.00. I don't mind paying for a drink but let it be a drink I enjoy and have some substance to it. When confronted, I got well thats the way we make them.... My money can be well spent at somewhere that values me as a customer. read more

This is my absolute favorite new spot to hang out with my friends. I have been looking for a place where I can go relax and listen to music and this is it! I always loved the "dive vibe" of this place... but wow do I love it more under this new ownership! Somehow they managed to retain the comfortable atmosphere while transforming it into a super clean and hip place to grab a drink. Personal fave aspects: fully loaded juke box, pool table, friendly and knowledgable bartenders, BEAUTIFUL design, modern and classic - the red leather booths are still there, but immaculate now. Under new ownership. Totally different vibe (in a good way). Great place. Went in today for a Steelers game and both the owner and his wife came and chatted with me at length. The bartender is awesome. Vibe was solid but it's not a sports bar. They're all about music, too. They have live music nights and an 80's Night. $8 "shot and a beer" special, $3 beers. The decor is gorgeous (old school red booths, stunning blue walls, rock and roll memorabilia, high tech juke box, fun art in the bathrooms), the service was excellent and the drinks were made to complete perfection. Always walked by this spot while getting ice cream next store never knew how cool it was until recently. Pool table, board games, dope decor....this place is super fun. Usually an older crowd and make sure you bring cash. If you aren't thrown off after the first ten minutes, then you will love this place. Drinks are actually reasonably priced, like up th hill. I usually come here with just a couple of friends or my brother in law. I really like this spot and tend to find it easy to get on the pool table. Don't just walk by this place. I grew up in La Crescenta/ Montrose. I've been going to this bar for 10 years now and it never changes.... WHICH IS GREAT!!! The bar is very laid back and never too crowded. Some of the other bars in Montrose have gone "hipster" and try to have a young image. This bar is a classic and love that they are keeping it that way. Some may recognize it from movies such as The Wedding Singer ;) Love this place!!! Definitely check this place out and if you have a great time, pull out a $1 bill and write on it!! New ownership and a new feel. Great prices, great service, clean bathrooms and a neon 'welcome to the jungle' sign! Nothing else like it in the Montrose/La Canada area. Great for an early business drink or a night out with friends. Service was great and the new owners were personally greeting the customers. Great dive bar in Montrose, the new ownership group have cleaned up and pumped a whole new energy into it. They have a great 80's DJ and pour a stiff drink. I don't know who the guy is who is saying the new "investors" just want to own a bar. The guys are in there everyday making sure their customers are happy. I've seen them cleaning, answering questions and doing whatever it takes as they figure out how great Avignone's will become. I love a good dive bar close to home, even if I've never been able to pronounce its name. I'm not a beer drinker, so I can't comment on that, but the booze is cheap and strong (Jack and diet for $5? Yes please), and there's always enough seating for large groups. If you go on a weekend, you're bound to run into some hometown douchebags, but eh, it's Montrose; I would expect nothing less. The juke box has everything you could ever want to hear and then some, and there is a pool table if you feel so inclined. I've never been in at a time when at least five old dudes weren't sitting at the bar, but they've probably been there since 1970, so they don't bother anyone. Worst part of the deal: old timey towel thing to dry your hands on in the bathroom. Dry your hands on your pants and bring some hand sanitizer. You're good to go. Best part of the deal: there's a Pac-Man machine in front of a fireplace! OH YEAH! Bring cash because that's all they accept. There are three different banks across the street though, so you'll be ok if you forget. read more

Some may call it a "dive bar" but most know it as the local bar everyone goes to either meet up with friends to talk & shoot pool, relax by the fireplace when it's cold outside or just have fun & get crazy once in a while it all depends on who's there and what you make of it, sometimes it's almost like 2 bars at once. For the most part the "regulars" will be anyone's friend (for some this can be scary I know) but if you're new in town or visiting isn't that what you want? And yes there's no beer on tap and it's cash only but it's been here 30 years, open 7 days a week, 9am - 2am, if ain't broke don't fix it. It's pretty much like Cheers, but watch out for predators , especially one bartender that is a snake. So basically he will hook you up with thousands of dollars worth of drinks until he decides one day not to serve you for personal reasons which by the way is against the law to discriminate. You really need to know what you are getting yourself into when going here. If it fits what you're looking for then you'll love it, if not you'll be a little grossed out and will probably end up at the Fat Dog consoling yourself with Jalapeno Mac N Cheese and tap beer. Because the "Avignones" sign on the side of the building is hard to read and because anything french and classy sounding have no place near this bar, people come up with their own names, here are the top 5 (in no particular order): 5. We Are Open (because it says so on the sign by the door) 4. The Wedding Singer Bar (because it was filmed there) 3. You Need Cash (for obvious reasons) 2. Megan's Law (because a few of the creepy regulars look like they may have been featured on that website, but that is unsubstantiated) 1. MOB (Montrose Old-man Bar) The highlights are: 1. CHEAP booze 2. Kimmy the bartender 3. Pool table 4. Good Juke box 5. Easy place to hang out, no one will judge you if you are alone, drunk by noon, or even wearing sweats (also falls under the low-lights category) Low-lights: 1. Go on the wrong night and you'll be surrounded by douche bags, a guy who has been there since the bar open at 9am and drunk since 1983, and girls who think tube tops and muffin tops are the perfect combo 2. Smelly and dirty 3. Not a place where you would ever want to take someone home that you met there 4. Distinct possibility of needing antibiotics after a trip to the bathroom If you are in the area and looking for a quick place for a cheap drink and maybe listen to a decent juke box and shoot pool, then its a pretty decent place. From creepy weirdos who make up ridiculous excuses to cut on you in line to play pool, to owners who are blatantly rude when you're playing pool and don't miraculously know when they do want you to play/not play, to "security" that throws away your items with made up rules. This place sucks, the bartender Melissa is rude as hell. She ignores you unless she knows you. I've given this place a chance a few times and all she does it ignore you. I stool at the bar with friends to order a drink for 15 minutes and not once did she help us. She helped everybody else except us. Didn't even bother to acknowledge us. The best part about it all was that there was less then 8 people in the bar total including her. I'll never step foot inside that place again and tell everyone I know not to go as well. I thought Yelp is there for customers to give their honest opinion about a place they visit. Anyhow, this bar is nothing special, expensive jukebox, pool tables and gentrified drink prices.
