We tried a few things and everything was solid, but the white pizza definitely stole the show, so flavorful and perfectly done. The Hawaiian was good too, but the white pizza was easily my favorite between the two. We also ordered empanadas (spinach with cheese and short rib), and both were really delicious. Tried this place on a recent Friday night at 8:00pm, and it was a pleasant experience. It is located in Downtown Downey, which houses lots of restaurants, bars, stores, etc. There's mostly structure lot parking in this area, but you may be able to find street parking too. The ambiance of Avenue Pizzeria is quaint and quiet, compared to all of the louder bar/club restaurants nearby. It's a nice contrast, if that's what you're looking for. Came in today, ordered a whole pepperoni. When it came to the table it was undercooked. Picked up a slice, and it was so floppy, you couldn't hold any part up. Folded like cooked lasagna sheets. We asked if that's how it usually is, the woman said it's bc it's fresh. Then asked if we wanted to have it cooked a little longer. We said yes. We put our two slices back on the tray, both each had a bite in it, and gave it back to them. They put it back in the oven, yes with bites in them. They warned us cooking it longer will make it look ugly and mess up the cheese, we said it's ok. When they took it out after a while, it became a good pie with crispy bottom, and had no flop. Kind of sucks they were ready to let us continue to eat an undercooked pizza. Over all, the pizza was good after we told them how to fix it, and the salad was good. read more

Sighhh. I was excited to try this place as I've heard good things about it. I went within an hour of closing and so I hope this is the reason it didn't meet my expectations. I had a slice of jalapeño pepperoni - it looked like it had been sitting out for a while and even though they warm it up in the oven, it still tasted old and overcooked. The empanada was also dry and the short rib lacked flavor. The spicy chimichurri was good! The alfajores were also delish! The ambiance is super cute and cozy. Good price, good food, $5 happy hour with piping hot pies and a classic pizzeria setting. There's a limited selection for vegetarians but what I could order did hit the spot, especially the marinara sauce that comes with the garlic knots. I cleaned that little container. And they weren't skimpy with it either. All the food are served steaming hot, soft and crunchy in all the right places. Nothing was too greasy or too cheesy to lick off your fingers after eating. It's a childish habit I'm not sure if I could ever quit. Where times like this, there's no justification on wiping all that flavor off. Those New York slices are humongous. One or two are good enough to fill you up. I also decided to try the short rib empanadas and they were so juicy tender and even better paired with the chimichurri sauce. The service was outstanding, the two ladies Karen and Michaela were so sweet and accommodating. Stopped by for work lunch, been wanting to try this spot since they opened. Weekdays are easier to visit when its not so busy. Tried a couple of slices, pep and the white sauce. Keep in kind when you buy by the slice they are pre-made sitting on a warmer then thrown in the oven to re-heat. Having this in mind pizza was still delicious. Lived the by-the-slice option as its an easier way to sample different signature types with diff toppings. Girl at the counter was nice and helpful. No issues there. Will deg be back with the fam to try a fresh pie. Pro-Tip: If you are ordering by the slice to go, order ahead. Takes about 10-15min to re-heat in the oven. read more

This place is bomb. Incredible delicious beautiful place to eat a pizza at or get it to go. I have nostalgia of a great pizza place in Highland Park (Figueroa and York) named Luigi's Pizza. No longer there but it does live in my brain as a delicious pizza place as a young kid. This place has rekindled my brain cells as this pizza tastes just like Luigi's pizza and is just as good. Oh, they have beer on tap and wine. They have a big screen tv (they should make it larger) so you can watch a sports game while you eat a delicious pizza and drink an ice cold beer. Living in Downey I can say that I wasn't too impressed with another pizza place opening since for me Shakeys is the place (yea yea you may judge my pizza taste buds from this) but I had no choice but to try it since my daughter Daisy had her bday surprise party here. My wife set it up and my minds eye had a vision of how the place must look. Big was I wrong. This place is incredible. This may be my new place to chill and have a beer. Was a regular here a couple years ago. I used to brag that they had the best pizza in the world. Not sure what happened but they went to the opposite side of the spectrum tonight. Firstly I paid for my food, then was told afterward they didn't have the pizza we paid for. Then when we got our food to go, the empanada was literally raw. Straight dough with uncooked cheese. So I went back and told the guy cooking pizza and he handed me another half ass cooked empanada with his bare hands and no gloves. Cochino! Straight up nasties.
