Wow! Yummy! We asked around when we came into town and the locals recommended Avalanche Pizza. It did not disappoint. We had the bbq chicken pizza and also a pep and sausage pizza. The bbq was sweet and Smokey with a little kick. We also had a salad. It was so fresh and delicious. Green leafy lettuce no ice burg lettuce. Can't wait for our next trip to Athens to have this treat again. read more

Between the quality ingredients, fun pizza names, and gluten free crust, this might be the best pizza place in the US!

We were staying at a nearby hotel and ended up getting a pizza from Avalanche to eat in our hotel room after striking out uptown trying to find a done in option due to Covid restrictions. Lots of great specialty options. They have a great set up for contactless pickup. The pizza was quite delicious. read more

Pretty good slices and wings. The skeletonwich and Mt. Philly pizza's were great. I think my favorite was the Mt Philly

While temporarily staying in the OU dorms, I knew I probably wouldn't be able to cook. Eating out would be a staple for me. Avalanche pizza was my saving grace. Roommate and I ordered delivery since we were too lazy to pick up food. It was hard for me to choose which pizza I wanted since everything on the menu looked so good. I ended up getting the steak and potato pizza and it was amazing. Meaty, cheesy, and full of carbs-- everything you would want in a pizza. read more

Avalanche Pizza - The Great Steak and Potato Pie - Pizza Near Me - Athens, Ohio

A small number of outdoor seats. Great gluten-friendly pizza crust and sandwich buns!

My dad is a foodie, so when I wanted to know where I should go to eat on my weekend trip to Athens, he was my go to guy. Without missing a beat he said "Avalanche Pizza! It's world renowned. Literally." Well, as is typical, dad was right. The only mistake I made was assuming the restaurant had a dine-in option. No biggie. We simply got our pie and breadsticks take-out, and headed to the hotel. A fabulous pizza, great breadsticks! I also had a salad, which was perfect, as well. Thanks, Avalanche! read more

I want to start off by saying I love pizza. Even bad pizza is pizza. I had been in town and was looking for something new to try on this trip. The reviews for this place were amazing. We stopped and bought a slice of pizza for $2.00 just so we could finally try it. It didn't look very fresh so I asked the young man behind the counter how old the slice was. He said around 30 minutes. Maybe I was having a bad day or maybe it was bad pizza but I would never go out of my way again for a piece of this pizza. Sorry for the poor review. read more

Just wow! In Athens for a festival and the yelp reviews were great for this place so I picked up my pizza and told the cashier "I'm really excited about this." Ordered the Soilent Pizza (vegetarian) and very green with the spinach, broccoli and pesto (I'm thinking this is a play on the metal band Soilent Green aw yeah)! The feta gave it a nice punch combined with the dense and smooth mozzarella. And the under layer of tomato sauce is what made it complete. IMO, what makes a pizza is the crust and at first I felt the crusty bits left after gobbling that loaded pie slice weren't worth it. But then I ate one and was surprised to find it had a buttery garlic salt flavor even though the crust is more on the doughy side then a hardy crunch. Be aware that this a take out or delivery only pizza joint. read more

We have been eating avalanche pizzas for years n years ! We love all their pizzas.... their lunch specials are the best - in & out in 5 minutes and always great tasting. Thank You Avalanche Our favorite? Teenage Vega Werewolf with several extra pesto sauces We shall order more from Avalanche Pizza read more

My new favorite pizza place! Great flavor combinations with so many toppings they are literally falling off your slice (hence the name).

Best pizza ever. Gluten free options. Many varieties of pizza. Voted best pizza in Athens.

My parents visited Athens a handful of times during my college career at OU. When they visited, all they wanted to eat was Avalanche. They were obsessed. With all the pizza places in Athens, I made Avalanche my special treat. If I had a really good week or did well on an exam, I'd treat myself to The Avalanche Ranch. I'd eat half then have sweet dreams of gooey pizza piled high with toppings. read more

After my pizza slide accident, they've been extremely careful and all of our orders are delivered nicely. Sometimes they're so hot from the oven you have to wait to eat! I'm grateful I didn't give up on Avalanche! read more

The gluten free pizza here is great. The only concerning issue is that they don't really ensure that it hasn't mixed with the regular dough. My last visit here was quite disappointing. I had called ahead and waiting for about 20 minutes before heading over to pick up my order. After getting there, I waited another 20 minutes in the lobby before the pizza was done. I got the impression that they had completely forgotten the order until I arrived. Who has time for that?! If you eat at Dominoes and/or Pizza Hut you are doing yourself and the town a huge disservice. Avalanche really is great pizza, and it's so important to support local restaurants. Plus, you can just come in and pick up a piece by-the-slice if you don't have concerns about gluten. read more

Friday evening was our first time ordering from here. We like to try new pizza Joints from time to time. Sadly this wasn't a very good choice for us. We ordered a medium sausage and pepperoni & pepperoni & mushroom. On both the sauce wasn't very good. More like it came straight out of a can and very bland. Then on the sausage pizza, the sausage was very dry, hard and not much on the pizza at all. Both were short on pepperoni too. The dough seemed doughy or not completely cooked. All and all we would have to say it wasn't very good tasting at all. Might have been a fluke or maybe just not our type of pizza. read more

A must have each time we visit Athens. Just the right amount of toppings. Either plain or gourmet the taste is awesome. Their wings were awesome to. read more

I've had avalanche 3 times. Each time the pizza is missing one of the toppings we have ordered. Workers aren't very friendly.

Hands down, the worst delivery order experience ever. Salad and bread sticks. Middle of the week. OU on break. I call after 45 min and they say it's on the way. Never showed. I call back, verified they had correct address. They did. It's been hour and half since I ordered so I cancel the order and request a refund. I am refused. I ask to speak with manager. He refuses a refund. I insist. He tells me to perform impossible act on myself. I talk next day with general manager. He says it is too late to give refund! Never, ever again does my family order from the joint Update: Response to John, General Manager Well, John, it was never delivered and YOU made the decision. You stole my money and you didn't offer to make it right. So no, thieves don't get a second chance with me. Even now you don't offer to make it right so you're still the one who stole my money. read more

Great pizza variety and high quality. This coming from someone who's picky about pizza

Haven't been in years, but Avalanche is outstanding. Exceptional food, enthusiastic staff. Their monstrous Bride of Wonderboy pie is the best pizza ever conceived by humanity. Don't Google it. Just call and beg them to make you one. Trust me. Don't forget the Rolaids. read more

The hype is real but not really true. It's the town favorite but it's not that great. Go here for novel pizza. They have an award winning "Godzilla" pizza, one named after wolf man, and all of the old music and movies references you could want for names and themes. There have some weird combinations, some of which are the epitome of junk food and are good with beer but too expensive for that purpose to me. Note that while they have gluten free crust, it's pretty well good for a low carb diet or a mild sensitivity only. They make them in the same kitchen, so be warned if this is a concern for you. The pizza crust is too thin for me, and the cheese sometimes has an odd texture. It's usually a little overdone, and the sauce is kind of bland. The toppings are usually pretty good in quality. The pepperoni isn't super greasy. They do sell pizza by the slice, despite being a little far from court street where you would typically expect this. The employees there are fine. The store has a sense of humor with it's signs but sometimes they border inappropriate, making light of political situations or social issues (usually it's a harmless joke though). If you live in Athens it's probably worth a try eventually. Just passing through? You have better options, even if you want to cash out on the "local" eateries. read more

Terrible service and the food is worse. We moved a daughter into OU as she is in the grad program and they had good reviews so we stopped in. The gentleman behind the counter was surly and curt. We were starving so we opted to grab a couple of slices of pizza to go. The pizza was terrible. It tasted like cardboard and it hurt my teeth to rip it off the slice with each bite. Bad food. Bad service. And it literally is a hole in the wall. Who in their right mide voted this place ' best pizza'. They must have been employees or family members. Avoid at all costs and go somewhere else where they might appreciate cutomers and where they know how to make pizza. read more

The entire world has talks about New York Pizza. In New York they talk about. Avalanche!

DELICIOUS! Tons of Signature pizza options. We come to Athens once a year to hunt and we ALWAYS order from Avalanche Pizza. Avalanche Ranch is my favorite. Bacon Cheeseburger is a very close 2nd. Customer service is too notch! Always friendly and efficient! read more

I go hard for pizza. i will go anywhere that has great pizza. Sadly I was super let down by this place. I ordered with Greek with Chicken and it was GREAT. My husband got a NY Style pepperoni that smelled and tasted like rubber. IDK if it was the cheese or what, but it was disgusting. I spit it out. We also got bone-in wings which were barely edible. The breading was soggy from the sauce so I'm not sure how long they were sitting there before we got them. read more

Personally my favorite pizza in Athens! They have a wide variety of pizzas/toppings that are sure to please anyone. The staff are very friendly and the basil pesto sauce is the best part. read more

Avalanche Pizza is voted best pizza in Athens, Ohio pretty much every year. They don't have to try to trick you into thinking they won, like Plus One Pizza. They source a lot of their ingredients locally and care about making a great pie. If you are craving pizza and you're in Athens, this is the place to go. read more

Best pizza in Athens and possibly best in Ohio. A bit pricy and not many vegan options, but their jalapeño poppers are to die for.

Kind of the only game in town, and that is reflected in every aspect of the experience from the actual pie to the service. Another 'award winning' mediocre pizza: definitely don't add fresh basil because they will actually cook it, expect a different cut pattern every time, pies will never be ready when they say, and the online system is down fairly frequently. Also, the New York style, which is a marked improvement over regular, aren't even available to order online. Ultimately, this is a place that doesn't need or want your business and will make sure you know it. Ah well - this is Athens! read more

Great pizza! So many options and great friendly service. Have drove over an hour to eat here twice so far!

Ordered a small pepperoni and onion pizza well done two nights ago. The kid took my money as soon as I walked in and told me it would probably be a few minutes and walked away. Five or so minutes later someone comes from the back with several boxes of pizza. I stand there wondering if one of them is mine as no one is at the counter. I approach the counter study the boxes and locate my pizza. I had to call the kid back to the counter and tell him that my pizza was ready. That I could've dealt with but I was staying at a local hotel and once I got back to my room and opened the pizza I discovered the slices were not cut all the way through and I had nothing to cut it with. I found the crust a bit tough. The toppings were Kind of a greasy mess. I have tried Avalanche many times and really wish I liked it more. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. read more

We stopped by here while traveling back home from the south. The Pizza was fantastic! Fresh ingredients and piping hot. We ordered a chicken, bacon, pineapple pizza and a Calzone with sausage and pepperoni. The pizza was a wonderful thin crust pizza with juicy rotisserie chicken that was well seasoned and the bacon was nice a crisp. My daughter got the calzone and absolutely loved it. Said the crust was thin enough that everything inside was cooked and tasty. This will be a definite stop for us the next time we are driving through. read more

Can't really speak to the quality of the by-the-slice items, but their whole pizzas are incredible and I've never seen so many choices for toppings. Best tomatoes I've ever had on a pizza, by far. It's a walk-in/walk-out sort of place and pretty casual, so don't expect Waldorf Astoria-style waiters or something. But who wants that in a pizza joint? I mostly just want good food and Avalanche is always good. read more

One of my favorite pizza places in the entire world. That's right, the world. When I was a student at OU, I was an Avalanche frequent and no matter where I go, I don't find a place quite like Avalanche. Their BBQ Chicken is still the best I've ever had. The rest of it is pretty good, too! If you're looking for unique specialty pies, this is your place. You won't find some of these offerings anywhere else. And if you want a more standard pizza, this is still the best you can find in Athens County. The crust thickness is satisfying without being too much. I like to get extra sauce and the dough holds it well. The 3-for-1 deal is as good as you'll find anywhere. They're open until 4 on weekends! Living in Houston, I can hardly find a pizza place open that late. read more

"The best pizza in the world?" No. That being said, it's very good, but not the best I've tasted (try Providence Coal-fired Pizza in Rhode Island). Trouble with these places is: they get by on fancy award plaques instead of good old customer service. Doesn't matter if you have the best product in the world; you still need people skills. The wait times are offensively long and needlessly made worse by poor communication and lousy counter service. And hot as all hell inside. Sheesh, people BUY AN AIR CONDITIONER. read more

Meh.......but I'm from Chicago so it would take a lot to impress me. This pizza is Little Caesar's-esque with a definite upgrade in the sauce. I think the main draw here is the kitschy-gimmicky trend now of weird combos atop your pie. Peanut butter and jelly, french fries, cabbage......I'm sure motor oil and engine de-greaser aren't far behind for NASCAR fans. This place has over 50 different specialty combos. If I ever go back I think I'll try a calzone, as every specialty can also be fitted into one. This is carry out-delivery only and the workers were very nice. read more

I saw the menu and reviews and I just HAD to try this place out. I should have listened to our cab driver. Although the toppings were generous the flavors were not there. This place may work in a small college town but they wouldn't knock anyone's socks off in the city. read more

Absolutely hands down the best pizza I've ever had. They nail it at every step of the way, flavorful crust, sauce, and toppings. It's fresh and you can tell. If you want a standard pie, you'll love it, but the real draw here is the specialty items. The general tso's pizza with chicken, cashews, mandarin oranges, and teriyaki sauce will blow your mind. This is but just one of the amazing and unique pizzas that Avalanche has to offer. I miss a lot of things from Athens Ohio since I moved after college, but Avalanche pizza is in my top five. read more

Best pizza around, it's not even close. Fantastic customer service you can't beat it.
