Their battery was about $30 less, so even if I had a brick, I'd be okay. Testing proved my battery after 45 minutes of being recharged by running engine was now ALIVE! "Ha ha ha! Give my battery LIFE"! (Thanks to Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder). So, they fine folds at Advance did not charge me, sent me on my way and gets my eternal gratitude. Frantic to get it fixed before my trip home, I had a family member calling around to find a place that could get me in quickly. We were thankful that they said they would get me in Monday morning (we made about a dozen calls). Anyway, they knew I was from out of state and was rather desperate - a situation other mechanics could take advantage of - but I received great service instead! There was a reasonable diagnostic fee of $42 (to be expected) and they quickly discovered I had just fried my relay which they had in stock. Honestly, I was expecting a full clearing out of my AC system and at least an hour or two of labor. Transmission issues resolved!…read more While driving from Seattle to Los Angeles, our 2016 Forester's Check Engine and ATL Oil Temp lights came on. After getting towed 70 miles back to Kendall Subaru, the problem was diagnosed (along with a thorough overview of some other, less critical issues) on Saturday. The tech stayed late, and came in early on Monday to get us back on the road. I rented one of Kendall's cars for use while ours was in the shop, so we got to enjoy Eugene's restaurants and nearby hiking trails. Dylan, the service writer, was clear and concise on the issue, accepted my deferral of the other issues, and kept me up to date on progress. Nice! Costs for the transmission repair came out precisely on estimate. The diagnostic cost was folded in to the overall charge. While wandering around the showroom, Matt came out, recognized that I had a car being serviced, and showed me a 2025 hybrid Forester - snazzy! Matt was patient, explained Kendall's sales process, and took me out on a test drive. Calm, professional, informative. If we were to contemplate a new car purchase, we'd seriously consider buying from Matt at Kendall, flying up, spending a nice weekend, and driving back.

Oakmont Service Center came recommended by a respected transmission expert, and my first interaction with Jerremy, the manager, was positive. My initial visit--radiator exchange, exhaust leak repair, and a minor carburetor adjustment--went smoothly, and meeting the two mechanics who handle classics gave me confidence in the referral. That confidence didn't last. A Breakdown and a Missed Diagnosis During a casual weekend drive, my Chevy wouldn't start after a coffee stop. After checking the usual suspects with no luck, I called Jerremy. The car was towed in, and it took two days before Eric looked at it. Because I'd had a starter issue in the past, he removed and reinstalled the starter without performing a full diagnostic. A professional approach would have been to verify the actual cause rather than rely on history. The real issue was the distributor. I chose to upgrade to an electronic module and coil. Eric removed the distributor and sent it to a shop in Cottage Grove for the upgrade. When it returned, I made it clear--in front of Eric, Jerremy, and Mike (the owner)--that if there were any questions, they should call the builder directly. No call was ever made. Critical Steps Missed The builder later informed me that Oakmont suggested they "needed to get into the engine," which was unnecessary and incorrect. The distributor had been installed improperly, and a firewall-mounted module was still running six volts--something any experienced classic mechanic would have caught immediately. The car would never have started without correcting that. To suggest engine work without completing basic diagnostic steps was a bad call. Lack of Accountability When I stopped by to speak with Mike about the missed steps, he was "too busy" to talk. Jerremy took my number, but no one followed up. When I reached out again, I was offered a $100 refund--an acknowledgment that mistakes were made, but not a meaningful resolution. I was also disappointed to walk in and see Eric working on my classic without a fender mat. That alone speaks volumes about attention to detail and respect for the vehicle. A Referral That Didn't Hold Up This referral fell short. As another reviewer, Von Sellz, pointed out--we don't all have dash cams to monitor what happens behind the shop doors. Some shops, like Joe's Garage, take thorough check-in photos and run a professional, accountable operation. They've been doing it right since 1952. Oakmont Service Center had an opportunity to live up to their reputation and the trust placed in them through referrals. Instead, they missed critical steps, failed to communicate, and didn't take ownership of their mistakes.

This being a time-sensitive matter, as rats could end up chewing through wires the longer they live in your engine compartment, Sun Automotive thankfully made space for my poor car the same day I called. They kept my car for 3 days and were able to work it in around other customers. They found the nest in my heater box and removed it and sanitized everything and changed the air filter where the rats had started another nest. After all of that, they sprayed herbal rat repellent and sent me on my way. They're pretty expensive, the rat repellent they sprayed was about $140, but they do good work, communicate updates well, and they worked me in same-day when other mechanics I called quoted me a whole week out. Overall, I'm very pleased that they were able to get the rats out before any more damage could occur. My car is now safely in a garage, so this will hopefully never happen again. I plan to return to Sun Automotive for regular maintenance.

You might see some positive reviews and that's only because the people that are writing them still don't know they got ripped off. I arrived in Eugene OR five years ago and the engine light went on in my SUV. I happen to be near an auto parts store and knew they had some testing device. They said they I needed some part replaced, I don't remember what it was called now, but it was $200 and easy to install. I didn't buy it then but went to Sun Automotive on Rustic Pl., to get an estimate to fix it. they looked me in the face and said it was gonna cost $900. I told him how the auto parts store said it would only cost $200 for the part and that would be easy to install. but Sun Automotive said the auto parts store didn't know what they were talking about and to replace it would be very difficult to get to. I suspected a rip off and went to a different auto repair company down the road. Not only did they tell me it was easy to replace that part, but when they checked out the car, the only thing that was wrong was that the gas cap was loose. I'm telling you folks and I have nothing to gain for making this up. These are conniving thieves. BUYER BEWARE !
