It's been over a month now, and everything's running fine, so it's time to post this:
I was complaining to a friend about how bad the service was at my GM dealership and he pulled out one of Rick's cards and said "This guy's honest," which was good enough for me to try them out.
My dealer had replaced the BCM on my 2002 Rendezvous, and all heck broke loose with it after that. (Four trips back and things only got WORSE....) It needed new belts, hoses and plugs, too, what with 140,000 on it, plus it had started to leak on my garage floor.
I knew it was going to cost a pretty penny - maybe a couple grand - to get back into shape, so I wasn't surprised by Rick's $1000+ estimate. He spelled out the estimate to me over the phone, and even added a few other things, like a good pressure cleaning under the hood to cap it all off. Then I sat down and called (my former) two GM dealerships, and two other auto repair places nearby and got quotes for just the basic belts, hoses, and plugs alone. Every one of them was almost/over TWICE the estimate I had from Rick, and that's not even counting other work he was going to do as well!
I HAD to give them a try, because if this worked out, I knew where I'd be going from now on!
A day for parts and another for the work to be done, and I had my car back, even all pretty UNDER the hood again, too!
However, the next day I noticed that it was idling strangely, randomly (high enough to have to brake on a 35 mph stretch a few times) and was sometimes losing power accelerating up steep slopes.
I called Rick right away, and he asked me to bring it in right away that afternoon. I went in, he hopped in the car, and had me drive it around so he could see the symptoms. (FYI: That was a first for me: Someone actually RIDING with me to see what the problem was like! Well done!) We'd only gone a mile or so when he announced he thought he knew what it was, and could diagnose it if I could leave it over night. (It was near closing time when I'd gotten to their shop, and had planned ahead with a ride waiting to take me home, so no problem.)
Rick called first thing the next morning and told me to come in and pick it up, it was all fixed!
It turns out that my TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) had bit the dust - likely coincidentally, given everything's age and having been all wet and worked around the day before - and they'd replaced the TPS, tested it, drove it, and confirmed that fixed the problem!
...And he fixed it free of charge, too!
Yeah, I'm taking all my vehicles to Automotive Consultants from now on, and I'm recommending them highly as well.
Pros:
- Very reasonable rates
- Any additional recommended work was sensible, not "fluff"/extra $$
- Friendly / courteous / professional
- Bonus follow-up work handled well
Cons:
- Need to extend their hours! (They're getting busy!)
- Didn't get a call right away upon completion (I.e. When I called to check it was "Ready to go.") NBD read more
