AUTOMOTIVE AUTHORITY REVIEW This shop was personally recommended to me; I really wanted to like them. However, bottom line: the issue I took my car in for was NEVER FIXED - across several visits. Nick & Tim are very nice and seemingly easy to work with; however, if the issue is never fixed, and new issues keep showing up, what's the point? VISIT 1: On 01/26/2026, I took my 2014 Subaru Outback (200k mi) because the engine was shuddering upon braking, the car then stalling itself off while driving. They test drove it and did a diagnostic, telling me what I already knew: the catalytic converter (CAT) was due to be replaced. I was not ready to commit to that repair at the time; the current issue was something new that hadn't happened previously. They couldn't find anything else wrong. They insisted fixing the CAT would surely take care of this NEW PROBLEM and offered to use an aftermarket part to lower the price. The codes were reset and I left. Less than a week later, all lights on dash turned back on. VISIT 2: Forced to make a decision between the pricey CAT repair and having to start over elsewhere, I begrudgingly agreed to the CAT replacement BELIEVING that it would, indeed, fix the problem, as I'd been told. However, within 72 hrs of this 'repair', the engine shuddering (original complaint) happened again AND it turned all the engine lights associated with the catalytic converter back on. VERY CLEARLY, the problem I brought the car in for had NOT BEEN FIXED. VISIT 3: I was told to bring it back in on a Friday evening (01/30/2026), so they could drive it cold in am to better diagnose it. They FORGOT to test drive it cold. They ran the diagnostic but still didn't know what the problem was. They cleaned out the air manifold, a GUESS as to what may help, then reset the codes. 2 weeks later: HUGE engine shudder causing a stall in traffic; all warning lights back on. Also: violent shaking on the freeway; an entirely new problem. VISIT 4 (2/20/2026): After running another diagnostic, they told me they still had no idea what was causing the initial engine shuddering/stalling issue; they literally said "It ain't broke enough yet!" for them to fix it! They said the highway shaking was caused by 2 control arms needing to be replaced, a safety issue that should be fixed immediately but that I had not been alerted to at any previous visit. Every time I picked up my car, I was assured that it had been vigorously test-driven before it was approved to leave, yet new problems showed themselves each time I had it back. After having the control arms replaced, I was again assured that the car was ready to go, no visible/diagnosable problems present, (save the ORIGINAL COMPLAINT which was 'not broken enough to fix'). I had given them about $3000 of my money at this point; the ORIGINAL COMPLAINT yet to be fixed! Here, I vowed that I would go elsewhere should the original problem repeat itself again. Clearly, Automotive Authority had no intention of actually fixing the original complaint! Immediately upon leaving that time, I knew something was VERY WRONG with the brakes. I thought "No way would they let me leave the shop with brakes about to fail; I must be mistaken". I KNOW the brakes were not in that condition when I dropped the car off. There was a tactile and audible grinding of the brakes from the moment I left that shop after the 3rd unnecessary repair. On March 3, 2026, the brakes completely cut out WHILE I WAS DRIVING. I had to use the paddle shifters on my Subaru to get home safely. What had they done to my brakes?!? I dropped the car off with normal brakes, lots of wear left, and after picking it up from an unrelated repair, the brakes were worn to the point of failing. I have no answers. But, they certainly didn't test drive it before giving it back to me; there was no way they could have missed it! After $3000 already paid for unnecessary repairs, I was not going to pay AA to fix it again. I reached out one last time to tell AA the brakes had died while driving and to ask if they would take any parts back that they sold to me and I didn't need. I never heard from them again. I got ONLY $900 trade for that Subaru and had to buy a new car in the end. My advice: never trust these guys without a 2nd opinion...or, just don't bother at all. read more

Before approving such a major repair, I brought my car to Automotive Authority for a second opinion. They took the time to do a full PSI pressure test, a complete visual inspection, and a thorough check of all connections and components. The inspection took nearly an hour -- not five minutes, not a quick glance -- a real, professional evaluation. Their conclusion: No leak. No failure. No radiator issue. No repair needed. They told me my car was "pristine" and in exceptional condition for a five-year-old vehicle. That kind of honesty is rare. Automotive Authority could have easily gone along with the false diagnosis -- instead, they protected me from an unnecessary $2,000 repair. This is a shop built on integrity, not upselling. If you want a place that actually tells you the truth about your car, this is it. read more

Poor diagnosis. Slow service. Waste of time. Waste of money ~$700. Poor customer service. No reason to go to this shop when there are so many others nearby. I came in with a P0171 lean condition check engine light and rough idle. They wanted to fix it by replacing the intake manifold and turbo. There was no underboost P0299 code for the turbo and the turbo does not seem to explain the rough idle (when turbo is not spooled up). They replaced the intake manifold. I went to pick up my car. Before payment, I asked if it was all fixed. Vince told me it was fixed as far as he could tell. I asked whether the car still had a rough idle. He said no. This was false and likely intentional deception. There's no way they didn't know the rough idle was still present. Vince was also avoiding eye contact which should have tipped me off to his deception. I paid $1043.57. As soon as I start up the car it was idling rough but I thought I would drive it home since the check engine light was off. On my drive home the check engine light came on. They just cleared the code and replaced parts I didn't need to fix the issue. I later discovered that I been incorrectly charged sales tax. They also charged me for changing my oil which I never authorized them to do. I went in again to get my money back. Vince refused to give me my money back and told me to come back the next day to speak with the owner. I went back the next day. The owner only refunded me via check for incorrectly charged sales tax, oil change, and diagnostic fee. It looks like he was still about $10 off with his refund but I've wasted enough time with this shop and disrupting my family for this shop. My wife drove over there twice with me and our 1 year old daughter who was sick. I also asked the owner if I had gotten both the turbo and intake manifold replaced and they did not fix my issue (rough idle, check engine light, P0171 code) whether he would have given me my money back. He said no. I'm glad I didn't drop the nearly $4000 dollars they originally wanted. Don't waste your time or money with this shop. Find a shop that tests and doesn't guess. Find a shop that doesn't throw a bunch of unnecessary things on their repair estimate just so they will have an excuse to not give you your money back. They were also slow with service. It took them about 1 week to get my car back to me. I would have appreciated telling me they don't know how to fix the issue instead of wasting $700 dollars. read more

Automotive Authority (and its predecessor All night Auto) has serviced both my daily drivers and my classic cars for over 20 years and I have never had a bad experience. While there have been times when a part was not available, he worked to find one even though my car was not ready immediately. The technicians and management do not shoot the parts cannon at my repairs and advises me of wearing items that may need attention in the future, unlike some competitors who look for as much work as possible while the car is in the shop. Tim is also involved in the community through supporting school events and awards a scholarship every year to a Troy student who is pursuing an automotive technology career. read more

What was originally estimated as several weeks job turned into months of a waiting fiasco. Took my Audi vehicle into Automotive Authority for a door repair after a botched job by Dotten Collision in November 2022 but didn't get the vehicle back working until April 2023. Owner apologized for foreign parts shortage and supply delays understandably but such an extensive delay without much constructive progress cost me in more ways than one. Vehicle switching, rental cars and wasted trips for multiple delays and consistently missed targets on the repair progress. One of my most frustrating automotive experiences of a lifetime. Having the vehicle stored outdoors on their lot for months and scratched up by who-knows-what didn't help matters as I needed to address those out-of-pocket at Service King. I also incurred a dead battery cost that the owner still charged me after not being operated so long even after I suggested the vehicle be operated weekly to avoid that situation - what a kick in the gutt. Nearly $1600 after 6 months of grief, hundreds in rental + wasted insurance payments + looks like at least $1K more to address paint scratches. It would've cost me less overall by originally just heading to the dealership and saved us all that grief that no one needed to experience. Pros - open late hours, owed up to ultimately complete repair without necessitating legal action. Cons - poor communication, damage exposure, inconsistent estimates. Unfortunately I would not return for any service after so many mishaps and lost confidence from this encounter. Why fret or take a chance when there are so many other choices that take pride and deliver positive results. read more

I took my car in over some weird mishap where I filled my tank seemingly yet no gas went in so my car would not run because to my surprise was still on empty when I thought it was full with a broken gas gauge. Anyway my point is I needed a thermostat so I got that done but did not realize their $105.00 diagnosis fee is added on top if the final cost I understood it as it had to at least be over that amount to work on of maybe I would owe it if it was less then that and for them to look it over. Anyway it cost me $340.00 to fix my thermostat which was done at the end of the second day my car was there. So I waited 2 days and like I have never experienced anywhere else I had to pay the extra $105.00 on top of the total cost. They also charged me $25.00's for gas yet the gauge was just above empty as soon as I got in it and I drove 12 miles and the empty light came on. My mini van in the City gets 16 miles to the gallon so less then a gallon and they told me they put 6 gallons in, like I told them that is a bold face lie! They also said you were out of gas we put some in and drove for 8 miles, why would you have to drive for 8 miles to check anything out?! Zero recommendations here plus they are very short with you when asking any questions. read more

I went here for an oil change and tire rotation. The prices were about the going rate around metro Detroit. Apparently sometimes they have coupons, but I've never come across one. The waiting area had a TV, magazines, water cooler, and Keurig coffee maker. Oh, and ottomans (awesome). The person said it would take an hour, but it ended up being faster than that, which is nice. He also did a vehicle inspection, topped off fluids, and filled the tires. He didn't try to sell me anything, although he did point out that my battery was on its way out. "Not an emergency, but just a heads up." He then gave me a vehicle inspection sheet, battery test results, and an estimate for a battery replacement. Appointments are recommended. read more

This automotive center has top notch car care. I have been here with with multiple cars over the past few years, by recommendation of a relative, who only takes cars to places after heavy 3rd degree questioning of mechanical knowledge. Coming from a former big 3 employee that's a big recommendation. The guys here take such great care and really help you understand your issues. They will do your warranty work too if your warranty allows for their center to handle it, you just need to bring your warranty to them. I have had oil changes here and small and large issues fixed. Never any issues with the work completed or service team.Having a mechanic in the family who double checks things and approves means they have to be doing something right. I have never had anyone here try to sell me anything I didn't want or make a suggestion that wasn't warranted. Look they know chances are you are there for something you don't want to spend money on. It's such an inconvenience to have your car gone for even a few hours. Sure, they have labor costs, but over the years I have realized that good work costs money. You are paying for the experience and workmanship of the certified technicians. The guys here don't talk down to you or make you feel stupid for any issue you describe to them. You also are paying for the guarantee that if for some reason your issue comes back, their parts and service has a guarantee to rectify that situation. I felt I needed to write this because most people just want to find a guy to fix their car as cheaply as possible. That doesn't mean someone can't, but just because you pay a little more at a licensed repair shop doesn't mean you got ripped off. It means you had a quality person inspect, troubleshoot and repair your car so it's in tip top condition to cart your butt around all over town. You wouldn't pay $20 to some guy on the street with WebMD to diagnose your health, you shouldn't do that for cars either. They have flexible hours so if you need to get in -call, don't assume that because they close in 30 minutes they won't work with you. They have a great seating area and entertainment area too if you are staying while they fix you up so it's a win for you. read more

The first time I went to Automotive Authority it was about 5:30 PM, I was hoping to get at least a diagnosis of my car's problem. Then I found out they were open until 10:00 PM. I not only got a diagnosis, I got all the knowledgeable explanation about the problem and by 9:30 PM, I went home with my car repaired and very happy to have found such a reliable place where I can go knowing that they are honest. They charged me way over than expected. They disassembled the parts and didnt even care to assemble but still charged me a big amount just to say that the car needed a new engine. They threw all the open parts in a box and kept it in the rear seat. I told them that I am going to give away to Charity Motors and they agreed to keep my vehicle for that week. They did not mention about any stocking fee ,but later they charged me that fee and forced me to pay it. I do not recommend this place to anyone since they are cheating the customer. read more

Sold me a car that broke down less than 3 months later , they were very shady and I became the victim of a really bad purchase ended up pouring another 1500$ into it less than 3 months of purchase!! They were able to plug the tire after removing the "S" hook that had been lodged in my tire during a storm. These gentlemen are kind professional and courteous. A few days ago, my window fell off track (on the coldest day of the year!). My mom suggested I take my car into Automotive Authority because Tim has always taken good care of her there. Tim got me in first thing the next day (and ordered the part right after we scheduled the appointment so he would have it ready to install when I got there!). I went here to replace my coolant housing and they did not do a good job. It was replaced in October and I just had it replaced again, its now December. They did not properly take care of my coolant housing and probably dropped it. They put a damaged coolant housing in my car without even inspecting to see if it was okay or not. Its not worth the money or the headache to come here. Keep looking for a mechanic, if you are trying to find one still. This is not the place for you. read more

They took more than six tries and over a year to rebuild my transmission. Each time the vehicle broke down within two weeks. For the last six months, they agreed to provide a rental car,. I am now being pursued by Hertz because Auto Authority stiffed them for the last part of the bill. A collection agency has shown me documentation where they have not paid the bill even though AA claims they did. AA tells the collection agent that I need to take them to court if I want them to pay. They also received payment for this from thier insurance company filing a warranty claim. I will take their advice a contact local consumer advocated and our attorney. read more
