Had some break problems with my 2008 Ford Escape. A friend of mine suggested Top Tech. I've been to another place down the street from me, in Madison Heights. They did a good job but their prices seemed too high, so I decided to have my car towed to Top Tech. These guys are awesome! They did a full inspection, found several problems with my car, but the total was so much cheaper than I thought it would be. My husband is a retired firefighter and has great knowledge of cars, and thought the cost for all the repairs would end up being at least $2K. They charged me less than $1300, and gave me a AAA discount, as I'm a AAA member. The other place I had taken my car wanted $400 to repair my tie rods; Top Tech charged me $105 for the same thing! We told them to take their time with the repairs, we didn't need my car back right away. They had it back to me in a day, less than 24 hours later. Convenience was the original decision for using Top Tech...trust, efficiency, professionalism and friendliness is the reason I continue to go back. Mark at the Rochester Road RO location is always extremely courteous and has my car back when promised. With every repair, I've been able to drop it off that day and have it back the same day...a much different story then when I utilized the dealership. UPDATE: I ened up taking my second car there for an oil leak. They guy there (not Doug) said my rear main seal went bad and it would cost $850 with 8.5 hrs of labor. I got a second opinion from my father-in-law and found the leak coming from the oil pressure sensor. He replaced that and made sure it was tight. $20 later my car doesn't leak anymore. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE!!!!!! I took my Saturn Sw1 for a wheel bearing replacement and was very satisfied. I coummicated with Doug the entire time from drop off to pick up. The cost was exactly what I expected and fair. I knew it would be done because I was referred to this place by several people in the area. I haven't has any issues since the bearing was replaced. I will be taking another car there in the Spring to fix the air conditioning. read more

Fantastic Service! Mark Matthews, Master Mechanic helped me change a tire in the parking lot of a Royal Oak convenience store. I had a sidewall blowout and was able to park safely, and had one of the (ridiculously overtightened) lugs loose when he came upon me and offered to give me a hand. We traded off getting the lugs loose and he helped me get back on the road in less than 10 minutes. Let's be clear: I don't know Mark. I'm not a regular customer of his. I'm a total stranger that he ran into on the street and he was kind enough to help. Keep that in mind the next time you need a good mechanic. Highly recommended! read more

Oh mechanics... you don't every actually want to see them, but you sure hope you have a good one when you do! On my way to work one day, I happened to glance at my car and noticed something hanging off the bottom... sure looked like my muffler! I started hunting for a mechanic, but figured I was really in a bind since we are essentially a one-car family, and I hated to miss work in order to sit with my car. Luckily, I remembered Top Tech is within walking distance of my house. I gave them a call and got a quote and discussed timing. I believe I spoke to Doug, and he was great! He worked with me to find a time when I could drop off my car and they would have the party so I would be inconvenienced to as little time as possible. The top tech auto repair shop in Royal oak was closed today, so I decided to try the sister shop at 664 s Rochester rd, clawson, mi 48017. Best decision! Their service was great! After I dropped my car for repair I was given a ride home, called when my car was fixed and ready to run, and picked up from home back to the shop! If that is not great service, I don't know what is. I just bought a used car from Volunteers of America and took it to get checked out by a mechanic. I won't name them because I'd rather not hurt anyone. They told me a number of parts needed to be worked on or replaced but were drivable for now. They told me my wiper fluid pump was broken but when I had a friend look, it was just empty and working perfectly. They also told me my front struts needed to be worked on and would cost over $700. My family recently discovered Top Tech Auto Repair. They're honest people who do good work at reasonable prices. When I went to them thinking I needed my struts done, the price they gave me was over $100 less expensive. Then when I actually took my car in they were truthful and told me that my struts were fine, and let me know what actually needed to be done. It saved me hundreds of dollars when they could have just done the work and taken my money. My entire family and I will be going to them from now on. read more

Worst place to get car fixed in state. This place sold my fiance over $1200 of repairs quessing at the problem over sevreal visits. The car still has the same problem. The last time the car was towed in they let it sit for over a week then they said they dont know whats wrong and cant fix it. No matter how good a place is, getting charged for repair that doesn't fix your car is a kick in the teeth.

After having the same mechanic for years, i was referred to Top Tech from a royal oak neighborhood social site. Everyone seemed to rave but upon taking my vehicle there, i was more than disappointed. I brought my vehicle in with the request of them diagnosing only the issues i communicated with them. After explaining the issue I was having,the end result and diagnosis was FAR from what i asked for. I came back to find out that he had done an entire inspection of the vehicle INCLUDING tires(did not ask for) and wiper blades(did not ask for)equaling out to $3500 worth of repairs. Now,i understand the sales tactic..i understand that's how they make money but if he would've just done what i originally had asked for, he would've had my business but In turn he not only tried to get me to replace a strut that i had done 8mo ago, a radiator flush that after a second opinion was NOT needed, charged me for TWO alignments and wrote up the diagnosis as an alignment charge for the strut replacement and another alignment for a ball joint replacement...why would i need to be charged twice? And no, there was no such write up for a "front" and/or "rear" alignment. I had asked for a print out of the diagnosis and also asked him what the diagnosis alone would cost for the visit, he replied free. When i then told him that i would have to go thru the list,prioritize the importance of repairs due to a limited budget and bring my vehicle back the following day, it went from a free diagnostic to $100 "but he'll give me a break and only charge $50". Now I'm not saying that they did not deserve payment for a service they providedto me...I'm saying as a professional,he should've not opened his mouth so quickly to offer something for free and then tell me there's a charge to it. If it weren't for there's issues, i would've possibly had them do the workthat i COULD afford. Instead, i took my vehicle to Midas in royal oak on Woodward and they were INCREDIBLE! They not only took the list Top Tech provided, prioritized the importance, told me the things that were inaccurate they also quoted me for the work at a fraction of what Top Tech was going to charge me. My thermostat alone only cost me maybe $150-$200 with Midas,where it would've cost me over $300 with Top Tech according to my receipt. Ethically i feel this repair shop probably takes excellent care of their regulars but me as a newbie coming in with the definite few issues needing to be addressed, they saw me as an ignorant female meal ticket. Thought they would make a killing off of me. If anyone wants a reliable, morally sound, efficient and reasonably priced place...go to midas,talk to Steve because they are incredible! read more

I do not recommend anyone go to Top Tech as I feel they grossly overcharged me for a part. Although this shop was legally in the right to charge me the $250.92 NAPA recommended list price for the new MAF sensor AF10140 that they purchased for approximately $120, they could have decided that the list price markup of 52% wasn't fair and only charged me a markup of 20-30%. I don't know if it standard practice to sell parts at more than 50% markup at Top Tech but in my case that is what happened and I would not recommend anyone else risk being this grossly overcharged. Full details below. My 2010 Mercury Mariner (71,131 miles on vehicle) suddenly would not accelerate and needed to be towed to Top Tech Auto Repair (3110 Rochester Rd, Royal Oak, Mi, 48073). The shop ran diagnostics and determined the MAF sensor had failed. They said they purchased the replacement part from the NAPA store and told me the part cost was $250.92. I looked this part up on the NAPA website and it was being sold for $159 (currently on sale for $143.10 and only a $100.99 at AutoZone). This is the exact same part that Top Tech purchased. When I asked Mark at Top Tech why the mark-up was so much he informed me that is the NAPA list price (what NAPA recommends that shop owners charge their customers). He said they never charge more than the NAPA list price and in fact sometimes charge less than list. He said for example brake pads cost us $66 and NAPA list price is $90 but we only charge customers $70 - so the price a shop charges a customer for parts is up to their discretion. I understand that shops need to make money and part of their revenue is made on marking up the cost of parts, however, in this case I feel the markup was unreasonably excessive -on a part I could have purchased for $159 at the same NAPA store that Top Tech purchased the part, the mark-up was at a minimum 36%, but closer to 52% since the shop likely only paid $120. On top of the part price, I paid a $90 diagnostic fee and a $40 labor fee for the installation of a part that takes no more than 10 minutes to complete for a total of $401.88.
