The food is phenomenal and speaks for itself. Their subs are made with fresh ingredients and more than a meal for anyone. And the pizza is heavenly. But.....their staff that I have encountered the last two days are the man reason I will remain loyal to them. The personableness and kindness I received the entire time I was there is what is missing in a lot of the world these days. They are two blocks from the hospital and I was going to stay the night with my grandmother. Like most college towns (I suppose), Athens maxes out the quantity on pizza choices, but the quality often lags behind. That's been true for as long as I can remember, because I grew up here and I'm pretty damn old. Automatic Pizza has to be on the high end of the Athens pizza quality scale, though. Enough so that, as I explain in most recent Yelp review I wrote, we'd drive halfway across Athens to pick up a pizza from here even though there was a neighborhood pizza joint just up our old street. Housed in an old corner gas station that has since served time as the Black Forest Bake Shop, among other things, Automatic goes for the New York style and does it better than most places outside of New York and the Northeast do it. Good sturdy, flavorful crust with zesty sauce, the large size (18 inches) is massive clown-shoe pizza that is totally foldable, the way I want to eat this style of pizza. The staff has always been friendly, too. Parking is a bit of an annoyance. There are like three parking spots, and the cross-streets don't have much in the way of street parking. We had a party of 7 at 7:30 on a Friday night. There's very limited seating, but they have the option of getting it delivered or just bringing it over to Normal Bar, right next door. The table that opened up at Automatic wasn't big enough for all of us plus our pizza, so it worked out very well! We got 2 20" pizzas to split between 6 people. One person got the chicken parmesan sandwich that looked delicious. The pizzas were perfectly cooked and generously topped. We got mushrooms, olives, and pineapples on one of the pizzas (plus a couple slices with the Beyond sausage--the vegetarian in the group gave it a thumbs up). On the other pizza, we got pineapples and peppers. It's a cute local place with good pizza. Great for splitting between big groups. We stuffed ourselves and still had a slice leftover. I have made a decision. And that is that Automatic is officially my favorite pizza joint in Athens. Okay, there isn't a whole, whole lot of parking spaces (but I think that's just a problem that Normaltown has as a whole); there's maybe three spaces in front and three behind the restaurant. With that being said, I would suggest finding some street parking near the Health Sciences campus or near Ike and Jane's bakery (after their store hours of course). Right in the front of the restaurant are two red, rad, retro gas pumps. They're just soo cool in my opinion. I love how the owners of Automatic decided to keep some parts of the old gas station and have it embedded into their restaurant. As with parking, this place doesn't have the most seats inside. The whole entire place could probably sit no more than 20 people inside and 24 outside (if you were to fill all 4 outdoor benches with 6 people). BUT it does have some pretty delicious pizza. After you order, you're handed a little rubber dinosaur, mammal, fish-friend to take with you. After a couple of minutes, you'll trade it in for your food once the waiter comes by your table. (My favorite one is the Stegosaurus). You could either get pizza by the whole or by slice. Each slice is probably around $2-3 and you can add on a variety of toppings for a couple cents each. I usually don't spend more than $6 for two slices and a nice cold, Coke to wash it down. With all the times I have gone to Automatic, they've never been stingy with their toppings so you get your money's worth. But to be honest, I usually stick with plain, cheese pizza. It just has the perfect balance of gooey cheese, thin crust covered in sweet tomato sauce. Just three ingredients to create a masterpiece. Pizza might seem easy to make.. but oh goodness.. I've had some bad pizza in my lifetime, but Automatic has got their recipe down and I will be forever grateful. Moving along! They also sell other things such as calzones and salads. But neither calzones or salads are part of Automatic's name so I've just stuck with the pizza. I'm sure they're just as yummy though. I'll probably try them out one day. After Starland closed, I was sad that I wouldn't find a decent pizza place in Athens. I had been meaning to try Automatic and it's absolutely amazing. Automatic Pizza is located just outside of downtown Athens in the best neighborhood that the city has to offer, normaltown. This old gas station has been converted into a pizza restaurant and is one of the top two pizza places in Athens. Honestly, the title for best pizza is a toss up between here and Ted's Most Best which is located about a mile away in downtown. One of the other things that I love about Automatic Pizza is that if you're hanging out at Normal Bar next door they will deliver it over to you so there is a helpful tip if you are looking for some late night food. My favorite thing to do when eating here is to order a salad and two slices of pizza. This is the quickest, cheapest and easiest way to get your food rather than ordering an entire pie. My go-to toppings are chicken, spinach, and tomato on one along with green pepper and Italian sausage on the other. Along with the food, they also usually have a good selection of local craft beer (many from creature comforts) if you're in the mood for a beer with your pizza. I can't stress enough the great value that this place offers for their food. How easily they have fit into this eclectic neighborhood is one of the beautiful things about Athens and the reason I'll give it four stars. read more

Terrible service. We waited for 55 minutes and didn't even get our pizza. We sat on the patio and watched so many people who ordered after us get served first. After asking staff multiple times about the status of our pizza, we simply got an "oh they called in their order so they got it quicker". Very disappointed in their lack of customer service. The soda machine was also not working which was a bummer since I had paid for a soda with my food order and didn't get that either. We also went on a Sunday evening and they weren't even that busy. Ended up asking for a refund and leaving since we had waited so long for our food and didn't even get it! Staff didn't even seem to care that we were upset and asking for a refund. They just gave it to us and didn't even ask any questions about why. I don't think I'll be coming back here anytime soon after the treatment we received from staff. read more

But something has changed, the ingredients are different and seem to be lower quality, not even the sauce or dough taste the same. First time at Automatic Pizza. It's an old gas station in the Normaltown area, and the aura is definitely one of the finest qualities. You can sit outside on a nice day and watch cars buzz by on the busy Prince Avenue, while you enjoy your Italian dish. Pizza slices start at $2, and it's $0.40 for each topping. My family of 3 ate for $15, including the sharing of a cannoli. The slice tasted pretty good. I think I would want to try the sandwiches next time, or a calzone. read more

We tried to call in an order to Depalmas on Timothy on a Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, as this was a game day (even against LA Lafayette), they advised us it would be a 1.5 hour wait which is bonkers and their pizza is not THAT great. So I remembered the Automatic which renovated the old Pizza Hut and we called in an order and was told 20 minutes for a large pepperoni and extra cheese, which was $23 seemed a bit on the spendy side for a large pizza. Whatever, we went ahead with the order and specifically requested Well Done which was acknowledged. When we picked it up, it was sitting on top of the oven ready and the box was huge. That had to be like 20 inches. Unfortunately, when we got home the bottom crust/dough was far from well done and more like Papa John's doughy and frankly the pizza was ... fine. Not good, not bad, and hardly as good as Little Italy (on a good day) or Ted's any day but we were not headed downtown to the zoo that is Gameday. We spent $28 on a large pizza with 3 toppings and a can of coke. It took no less than an hour after ordering before we got it. I understand sometimes it's busy (must have been to-go orders cause hardly anyone was there), but there was no acknowledgement of how long we had to wait or any updates given until we asked for one 55 mins after waiting.
