I would've saved a lot of frustration & a PILE of money if I had known about Auto Tek sooner. Gotta tell the story of how I came to Auto Tek, some years ago now: PRE AUTO TEK: My car's original engine croaked at 200,000+ miles; I needed a new engine, or the existing rebuilt. I was using Ben White Automotive at the time; PLEASE read my review of them BEFORE taking your car there, if you're thinking about it! I had the option of either getting my current rebuilt or swapping for a rebuilt engine. I chose the latter; a bad choice, turned out. Ben White Automotive never got it to run right after the swap, so I eventually took it to another shop. I won't name THAT shop here, because they do very good work. However, as good as they are, they couldn't get to the root of whatever was wrong with MY car. Somewhere along the way, either the second shop or someone else mentioned Auto Tek. I had noticed them before; I like to visit the Taqueria next door (you can read my review about them if ya want, highly recommended) & had driven by Auto Tek more times than I could count. It's a smaller looking shop, and for some reason, I never bothered to check 'em out even though they're closer to my house. Anyway, I took my car to Auto Tek, and after a couple dozen previous mechanics gave up, perplexed, AUTO TEK FIXED MY CAR! Now, I got a bum engine from the rebuilder BW Automotive chose, but considering that, my car ran closer to how it was supposed to for the first time since getting the replacement motor. I've been taking my car there ever since; that was years ago now. I'll be writing a review of the motor rebuilding company; still trying to locate their current location. They have moved. Every other reviewer is right: These guys are the best in town! The only reason I might hesitate to shower 'em with praise, is because I don't want them to get TOO busy! It's a family-owned business. Leonard and Aaron Fehrle are the backbone of a top-flite crew. As has already been said by others , they will NOT suggest work you don't need done. You will go away with ONLY the work you need, and maybe some advice as to what might be needed down the road, so you can plan ahead. And courteous to a fault. I had to learn this next thing over time, but I'm gonna share a bit of advice that will save you timer: These guys are REALLY GOOD! That's why they're so popular. So, unless it's an EMERGENCY and either your car is just dead or driving it would cause further damage, MAKE AN APPOINTMENT if it's still driveable. If you just show up unannounced and drop off, you're probably gonna wait several days to a week or more to get it back. They usually have a severe backlog; they're IN DEMAND, folks, the mark of a superior shop. If you will follow this advice, you'll likely have your car back same day, depending on parts availability and severity of the problem, of course. And this is if you, like me, have an AVERAGE car. But if you have a PERFORMANCE car, especially an SS or R/T, Corvette, Camaro or vintage American Muscle-Car, or antique, there is NO PLACE IN AUSTIN AND BEYOND that's better! What I'm trying to say is if you have an average car, you'll get a repair at the least possible expense, done right the first time. But if you want a "spare-no-expense" hot rod or road car, you gotta come HERE. I brought my Jeep Liberty in to Auto Tek based on Yelp reviews and was not disappointed. I needed to get an oil change, and I requested a mini tune up and for them to check out an issue I had starting my car on a couple occasions. I needed my car after 4pm so they broke up my service over two days during the day: the first day to do a complete once-over, and the next to do the actual work. They called me and told me what they found and I authorized the work. However, when I came to pick my car up the check engine light was on! They pulled it to the back and found that my battery was on the decline. I pointed out my battery was not identified as a problem during our earlier call, which they agreed and noted I could keep driving with the battery, but it would continue to decline. I opted to be proactive, so they replaced my battery at cost, no labor charge at all. They also replaced my missing hood prop for me after contacting a local dealer (at a charge cheaper than what I found online), and the rest of the work was done on my car without a problem. Plus they gave me rides back and forth, from home to the shop, when needed and were accomodating of my schedule. Everyone I met was great, and it's obvious they stand behind their work. These guys seem very straightforward and above board, and it's no surprise they have been in business for decades. I'll definitely be back. read more

The staff is extremely friendly, helpful and transparent. They have always gotten me my car back in a timely manner as well as kept my in the loop with updates when my car was there. I was referred over by Discount Tire for an alignment problem. The service writer at the desk quickly and politely made me an appointment for later that morning. I returned, was there less than half an hour, and Jarad reported to me that my car was in alignment (I'm still not sure what the mysterous ailment was), and since they only tested it, he wouldn't charge me the full alignment. That may not sound like that much, but it was handled so pleasantly and professionally. And being in the lobby for a while, I got to here all the other customers rave about how long they had been coming and how great it was. I just moved to Austin last August and have been to a few mechanics for minor car repairs and haven't been impressed yet. This time I chose to go to Auto Tek because I could walk there and, if I wasn't going to be super impressed by my auto mechanic, I might as well be able to walk back to my house while they are working on it instead of sitting there for hours with a 1 year old. Let me tell you- I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY THEIR SERVICE AND KINDNESS. First of all I was a walk-in so I was grateful enough that they took me in the first place. A few hours later I received an email and a call describing the work that they suggested to be done. I don't know much about cars besides their color so I was super pleased when Aaron politely described in laymen terms what the issues were. We had the work done there and even though they said they would need to keep the car until the next day they had it done that evening before they closed. And then to top it off- a week later I received a call from Aaron making sure everything was still going well with the car! That's great customer service. I got my car back this morning after 2 days in the shop. Everything seems fine. Aaron is extremely professional and courteous, and sends estimates by e-mail as well as a general "here's what we got done by day's end" e-mail which was very unexpected and quite welcome. I was never put on hold and in general the front of the house/reception seems well-managed. I'm gonna be honest, I'm a pretty tightly wound Type A person, so the first six or seven hours after towing my car there when they opened (7:30 am) til they actually popped my hood open (3 pm or so) felt like torture to me. I sent an e-mail in the morning asking how long they thought it would take til they could do the initial inspection, and never received a reply. They sounded extremely busy and I was worried I would kill an entire day without any work done. I phoned around noon and was given an enigmatic "Your car is in the rotation" reply. However, after that, I bit my tongue and forced myself to not spam them with phone calls, since it doesn't help anyone to tie up the phone lines with questions that can't be answered. They're within walking distance from my house AND have great reviews, I wasn't trying to piss anyone off by being an over-demanding customer. I waited and finally nearer to the end of the day was given a phone call. Everything after that moment went smoothly. Aaron made clear what was essential and what other minor issues they had discovered during the diagnosis. I only have grade school car knowledge, like, checking your oil, changing a tire, cleaning your battery terminals...other than that I don't know nothin' about nothin', so there's always the fear of getting taken advantage of or made to fix things that aren't broken. But I decided to trust them and trust the reviews on Yelp and let them do all the recommended minor fixes. I'll update if anything seems iffy but as of now, I have positive feelings about the transaction, and would return for any other needed service. read more

I'm new to the Austin area and was referred by my uncle who used Autotek before. I brought my Infinite G35 into Autotek this morning. Being new to the area I was skeptical about what to expect. I was blown away by the level of professionalism and service Arron the service manager give me. I dropped off my car first thing in the morning, though i did not have an appointment. I had a pretty serious oil leak, thinking it was going to cost me an arm and leg. Arron had his team properly diagnose my problem and realized it was much more minor than the previous place I took it. Arron kept me in the loop of what was going on and before the end of the work day he had my car running as good as new. They pin pointed problems that I think most mechanics would have over looked. I'm a car guy so I know my stuff pretty well and the solution for the problem made complete sense. My bill was exactly as Arron quoted me earlier in the day. The price was completely fair for the work performed and I feel like I was treated as a VIP customer instead of a walk in they didn't know. I noticed they also went above and beyond what was required of them. My brakes (which i never mentioned) were actually cleaned and adjusted free of charge and work better than they ever have. Before I left, Arron informed me he wanted me to monitor the situation for a few weeks and if there was a problem they would handle it for free. And if there wasn't a problem he still wanted me to call and let him know everything worked out perfectly. With that said, I feel like customer service is Autotek's number 1 priority and they met and exceeded my expectations. I have traded with Autotek for many years, with foreign and domestic vehicles. They have done a lot of work for me on the three different A4s I have owned ( 1.8t fwd, V6 quattro, 1.8t quattro) with better quotes and results than VW/Audi specialists I have been too. They provide customers with a repair "triage". What needs to be done NOW, for safety. What needs to be done, but is not a safety or catastrophic failure issue. What needs to be done, but will only be an annoyance until it finally just breaks. They don't hesitate to give you the big bad news, "it's not worth fixing, your money would be better spent looking for another car" instead of some shops that would love to just keep fixing one thing after another on a car that they know damn well is just going to be a money pit for you. I can go in there today and have invoices printed for every dollar I have ever spent there. And I have done so in the past, when looking to sell a vehicle to attest to it's condition. When there has been an issue with a repair (once ever), they have taken responsibility, re-done the work (as a priority, not next week when the schedule is empty) with cost of only the additional part needed, and no charge for labor. Fixing it is great, fixing it free, is better, fixing it right now, today is the best you can get. They have free wi-fi, they take you where you need to go if you need a ride (usually Leonard himself), there's a great little Mexican food place next door, and with all due respect to the 1(one) negative reviewer, I have never even heard Leonard raise his voice to a customer, let alone to me. As a regular customer, I can also say, that in an economic environment where businesses are shrinking they have grown, and their shop is always busy. They must be doing something right. With nearly, if not all 5 star reviews I had high expectations for this place and they were certainly met. I just got my truck out of the shop today and at a much quicker rate than I expected. My truck went out on Tuesday and I'm getting it back on Friday, that being said they didn't even get to looking at it til Wednesday morning. They were extremely quick and had great communication. Michael called me along every step of the rate. I usually call around and look for cheapest prices, but I felt very comfortable right from the start so I didn't even bother to do this. Right from the beginning the lady who helped me out when I first arrived was so kind. The waiting area and shop office in general was very nice and much unlike your typical auto shop. They put your car in behind gates at night for safety, they have 16 bays and 7 mechanics so work gets done quick and their customer service was top of the line. They didn't want to charge me for that work even though they easily could. It saved me $400. They are also super pleasant people and you don't get that shark vibe like with most shops in town. I dropped off my Subaru yesterday after work to have a wheel bearing looked at. They had diagnosed and quoted for the repair within an hour or so. Out of curiosity, I looked into it and found out that those parts were actually still under warranty so I ended up not having Auto Tek do the repairs out of pocket. I will say though that the staff was extremely courteous, prompt, and helpful. The quote they gave me was in line with what it should have cost and they spoke to me like they actually cared about me and my car rather than like I was a walking piggy bank. They were clearly very busy which usually leads to lackluster customer engagement, but somehow they were able to be kind AND very quick. I have brought in 3 cars with various issues over the past couple of years, and every time not only do they treat us with respect and are over the top courteous...but the suggested plan of action to fix the issue is explained and discussed, accompanied with a detailed breakdown of costs emailed over at the same time. Every time I bring my vehicle to these amazing people, I feel absolute confidence that the problem will be resolved. No bubblegum fixes here. My pickup had some more problems -- really, it was deferred maintenance -- and they went way, way beyond their call of duty. They are *NOT* a body shop, but they did hang a new bumper on my truck, so it will pass inspection. They traced down an electrical problem that I'd never have found. They serviced the A/C -- Ice Cold now. It's a 23 year old pickup, with a lot of miles on it; I do not intend for anyone else to work on it; if you're fortunate enough to find a good mechanix outfit I say stay with them. Last. They open @ 7 AM, I dropped the truck @ 5:45, there were already ppl there; the owner and his son, Aaron. Turns out they show up every morning @ 5:30 AM, just to check everything out, to keep on top of things. That explains a *lot* to me, about how they are the best -- they are on top of things, in any way, every day. I love to spread the gospel of AutoTEK to every person I come across. My clutch was not working properly. I had to have it towed to Auto Tek. When they checked it over it the issue had resolved itself. It's been months since I brought my car in, but now that I've got some (unrelated) repairs to take care of, I'm recalling the great service I received at my last visit to Auto Tek. I barely squeezed through the door at 6pm (closing) to drop off my car. I think most places would still take your service at that point, but what I really appreciated is that I was invited to remain inside to wait for my ride. I think it was more than 40 minutes past close by the time my husband showed up, but Michael stayed with me and chatted the entire wait rather than put me out to parking lot so he could get home to his family. (Sorry Mike's family.) The fact that the quote I received from them the next day was several hundred dollars less than the dealership just made the experience that much better. They ran a diagnosis on the issue, broke down the price to fix it for me, and after it took longer than expected because Ford sent them a bad part (literally zero percent Auto Tek's fault) they offered to pay for a rental for the weekend so I could have wheels. I need to preface this review by saying I have had outstanding experiences with Auto Tek in the past. Recently, the alternator went out in my car and I had it towed to Auto Tek. I happened to run in to the owner outside (it was on the weekend) and after describing what was going on, he accurately diagnosed it without even looking at it. We were in and out by the next day. I've also had some pretty major engine work done and they were great to work with. It all went downhill on our latest trip to them. I took my car in for a "whining" noise, almost sure that it had to do with the power steering. We dropped the car off and I later got a phone call stating that I was required to do an entire brake job on my car before they're able to diagnose the cause of the whining noise. I was told my brakes were "metal on metal" in the front and "paper thin" in the back. Total cost was about $1,000.00. After such repair, he could tell me what was wrong with the car. No thanks, as neither my husband or I had any indication that brakes were "metal on metal" (trust me....we would know). As a precaution and second opinion, we took the car to another mechanic the next day. Definitely were not metal on metal and in fact, the front brake pads had 2ml left and the back had about 1ml. Yes....needed to be done....however, I didn't need to get them done before even diagnosing the problem. By the way, the new mechanic was able to tell me that yes, it was a power steering leak just by looking at it and we got that fixed as well WHILE they did the brakes. In and out of the second place at a lower cost than my estimated brake job. I say all this for one reason.....I feel like it was an attempt to scare me into work that could have been done either WHILE diagnosing my car or AFTER. Being told that he wouldn't even look at it until my brakes were fixed made me feel like I was being told I was stuck, couldn't drive the car ANYWHERE for fear that it'd break apart and HAD to spend money with them to do the brakes. This is why I have lost faith in Auto Tek. It's unfortunate because I truly trusted them and hoped that I could continue with such trust in a good mechanic. Update: 10/16/2019 I received a call from Aaron regarding the review. The mere fact that he acknowledged what happened and apologized re-enforces my trust in these guys. Aaron, thank you for the call and thank you for the apology. We will definitely be back. read more

These guys do fantastic work and stand by it 100%. I had an after-market steering rack put on over 2 years ago that wasnt working out for me. I gave Aaron a call and he ordered a brand new GM steering rack, had it put on, adjusted and back on the road within a day- free of charge! My car wasn't starting so I had it towed to the shop. In the same day, they diagnosed the problem (a broken fuel pump), got the part, and fixed it, IN JUST A FEW HOURS! It was unbelievable. I love this place! I've been taking my cars here for years. I know very little about cars, but every repair they've done has been confirmed as necessary by a friend that is a former mechanic. Their front office is super clean with free really great coffee, the staff is competent and friendly, and they explain everything so well even I understand it. They keep in constant contact on the state of your repairs, always call if something new comes up, or if there is going to be a delay. They will do anything they can to make you leave with a smile on your face and a happy car. They also take AAA discounts. We trust folks at Auto Tek (Aaron, Michael and Andreah) more than any repair shop in Austin. They don't upsell you on unnecessary services, charge very reasonably, and are a gold standard for customer service. They always go the extra mile, including reaching out to the neighboring Discount Tire store in case repair works extends to tire replacement. Our Hyundai and Fiat are past the 8-10 year age. If not for Auto Tek, we'd have replaced our cars, something we will do some day, but not before folks at Auto Tek tell us we should.
