After calling a few mechanics in the Fairfield area about having a pre-purchase inspection on a Volvo, I decided to go with Auto Repair Solutions because it had the highest number of Yelp Reviews in the area for European cars. After arranging the inspection on a Friday morning, I waited to hear back from the mechanic after the buyer told me the car had been inspected--NOTHING for hours. I tried calling Jeff (the mechanic) several times, leaving messages each time without so much as a callback. When he finally called me back, he didn't tell me anything about the car except "it looked good". I asked if he had taken any photos of the car or if he had any kind of report he could email or text me and he said "no". I asked if there was anything specifically about the car that I should be aware of for the future--something every mechanic can comment on--to which his reply was, "Not really." As someone who has had several PPIs from different mechanics over the years, I've never been told that there was no inspection report at all--nothing about the tires or the brake pads or the filters or fluid levels or the body of the car or the interior. NOTHING. So, by the time I rescheduled anther PPI with a different mechanic on the following workday in the area, the owner ended up selling the car I planned on buying. read more

I've been looking for a new mechanic. I have a Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG, which is a high performance roadster with over 600 hp. Jeff's shop was recommended to me, Ironically, by a tow company. They said he worked on European exotics, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Took my car in for shock replacement on a Thursday. Got my car back Sunday morning, which included a new shock being overnighted, delivered and installed Saturday. Jeff did a great job. 3 things stood out regarding this shop. 1.his outgoing voicemail message is updated daily with the day, date and next appointment availability. That is huge because you know The approximately lead time you're looking at. 2. he's open on weekends, which is fantastic. Most shops are closed on weekends which is when bad things happen. LOL. 3. Just got my car back recently! My car's shifter cable snapped which is unfortunately a common thing for porsche 987/997s. Jeff tried to get the fix covered by my warranty but my third party warranty people would not budge so after a couple weeks of my car being kept at his shop, I just bought aftermarket shifter cables and a short shift kit. Jeff installed it pretty quick and for 2/3rds of what other shops charged for the install. Shift feels great and alot more engaged now! I am driving back to Seattle from the bay area in what is now an old BMW. Somewhere near Vacaville one of the cylinders starts to misfire (I did not recognize this at the time - the entire car shuddered). Jeff was open on Sunday and he did a very thorough job. There was no bullshit. It was direct. His approach was analytical and diagnostic. He knew his stuff, found the ignition coil that was busted, replaced it, gave sound advice on how to handle the problem if it happens again (I had 700 miles to go on I-5 till I reached home). Fair, honest, and human. Those are three words you hope for but rarely speak after you need and have car repairs done, especially if your car is European. However, Jeff, the owner/operator/mechanic at Auto Repair Solutions is just that and a whole bunch of other positive adjectives. One of my vehicles, a 2005 (B6) Audi A4 Quattro 3.0 V-6 with very low mileage. This era model of this vehicle needs to have the timing belt changed every 75,000 miles. Most forums suggest getting it changed before then. This is because if it goes bad on you, it could result in a blown engine. Basically the car would be junk because a new engine would cost more than the car is worth (with a good engine). So about 10 months ago the decision was made to get the repair done with the car having about 68,000 miles on it. I did my research on YELP as to area repair shops, after getting quotes from a couple of dealerships (just to gauge the price). Jeff was friendly from the start and I was satisfied that his work would correspond with his great reviews. Jeff has/had a similar vehicle so I was even more ready to put my trust in him. This was a relatively large job as it required a water pump, thermostat, which requires more than 8 hours of labor partly because of parts needed to removed in order to gain access to get the work done. Anyway, to make a long story short, Jeff saved me at least $600 off of the dealer cost for the repair. A couple of weeks ago, the window regulator went on the front passenger window of the Audi. I called Jeff was able to get the part in and repair it within a day, even stayed past business hours to try and get it programmed correctly (not Jeff's fault as the window motor required cooling down for a long period of time, I programmed it myself in the morning). When I brought the car in for the window regulator, I also told him that I heard a unfamiliar noise coming from the front of the vehicle, it sounded like a helicopter somewhere in the distance. He took a look at that also, but called it normal.... until I was pulling out of his back driveway, he then said that he noticed the sound also, and it sounded as though it may be a loose hose or something, and that if it got worse, to bring the vehicle back to check it out. Well, on the way home though that evening, my power steering went out very close to my house in Vacaville. I called him the next morning and he told me to drive it in if I felt safe doing it (this was a Saturday) and he would look at it. It was very hard to steer as it is an all wheel drive vehicle. I decided to drive it to him. About two miles from my house way to his shop, I heard a noise/clank/bang, at the front of the car and it continued to clunk as I pulled the car over. I opened the hood and one of the pulleys fell off. The serpentine belt was slacked. I called my insurance company and used roadside assistance for the first time ever (cell phone & website made it very user friendly and easy to locate me). Within the hour, the vehicle and I were taken to Jeff's shop. He diagnosed it pretty quickly (harmonic balance off) but didn't receive the part that day (although he said it should get there). He said that the part would cost a certain amount and the labor would be a certain amount, expanded by the fact that he had to remove the bumper and such. I spent most of the day there waiting to see if the part would arrive, but I didn't mind as I enjoyed a couple of the awesome businesses literally within steps of Jeff's shop. They are Formaggi Di Ferrante Cheese Shop (awesome pizza and people, see my Yelp review of them, been there several times), and Heretic Brewery. I just had just one beer, it was called "Shallow Grave", and it was great. I previously enjoyed the same beer previously during fellow a couple of military personnel related functions. Since the car was not ready, a friend gave me a ride home. I went to the football game the next day, and he called to give me an update. He told me that he noticed that the water pump had given up also, but this was a good thing for me because he was able to warranty the water pump and labor for that (since it was less than a year ago that he replaced and installed that part), which included the labor necessary to install the harmonic balance also. So he just charged me for the harmonic balancer (part itself only), the labor for everything was swallowed by the water pump warranty replacement and repair. The power steering which was also affected was now working again. The noise I heard from the engine was gone. Jeff, you're the man, I appreciate you. Thanks for the talks too! I told him I had contemplated selling and getting another new vehicle. He said no need, that he'd keep this one going for a long while & it's in great shape. I told Jeff when I left the other day: "I like you a lot, but I don't really want to see you again for a while (because it would mean I need a repair). Even though it was just before closing, Jeff was friendly, patient and sympathetic.
