Stopped by for brunch on an early Saturday afternoon. The doorway to the restaurant is under a sign for the business on the second floor. Was greeted warmly when we walked in and told we could sit anywhere we liked. The place has a very old-school diner vibe. We sat in one of the booths. We were given menus and our drink orders were taken. We ordered a hot coffee and iced coffee, and we were asked if we wanted water too. We took some time to look over the menu and someone took our order soon after our drinks came out. I got the Greek omelette (feta, tomatoes, onions) with home fries and rye toast (they ask if you would like it buttered). My SO got his usual diner order: 2 eggs over medium, french fries, sausage, and white toast. The food came out nice and hot. My omelette was very tasty and the home fries were well-done, as I had requested. Service was good, with someone coming by to check on us and clear off plates as needed. We would definitely stop in again if we happen to be in the neighborhood. read more

Had brunch there today. Eggs Benedict with fries& decaf coffee. Coffee was so fresh & delish! I asked the waitress to give me well done fries with the dish. Fine. Unfortunately they took it as EVERYTHING to be well done. The eggs Benedict was ALSO so well done. Hollsndaise sauce was thick & cooked, wanted runny egg yellows to stream over the eggs but they were so done, like a hard boiled egg. Very disappointing. read more

I just got charged $26 for 3 eggs over easy, bacon, ham and a coffee. This was my first and last time going there.

Have had OK food there in the past, but the last time I was very "underwhelmed", to say the least. I ordered one of the dinner specials...the chicken cutlets were tough, dry and chewy, like they were old leftovers reheated. Definitely not cooked for the fist time. Very hard to "choke down", Smothered in thick, gelatinous, fake-tasting lemon sauce the consistency of motor oil. $0.15 cents worth of linguini, a few carrots and some canned peas. Fine dining at Rikers Island couldn't be as bad as this. My mother-in-law lived in a rehab facility in Jackson Heights and the food they served her looked much better. I can't even call it cafeteria food or hospital because most cafeterias couldn't get away with serving swill like this. And they have the nerve to charge $25 bucks for it!! There was a time in NYC when great diners existed in every neighborhood, serving home-style food for a reasonable price but apparently that is an era that is long gone and will not return. The good places, like say Jahn's, to name one, are becoming a vanishing species. I really don't know how places like the Austin House stay in business. There seemed to be a lot of senior citizens who dine there, perhaps out of habit? Or maybe they gravitated there since the T-Bone closed and there are no other diners left in the area? I suspect the latter could be the case. AH has a monopoly on tasteless swill, thats for sure Perhaps Austin House is still OK if you stick to staples like breakfast, a sandwich, or a burger but order anything else, like the dinner specials AT YOUR OWN RISK. Do not let the divey, old-time, original 1960, never remodeled look fool you. This band-aid was in the MIDDLE OF MY BLT SANDWICH. We were in town visiting. No time to contact the proper authorities as we were leaving right that night. I literally bit down on this used, nasty, finger wrapped band-aid. Who loses a band-aid and doesn't know it, or say something about it??? Ummm... how stoned were they??? Yes, they comp'd our bill, but with all the diseases in this world, that means nothing! I had to rinse my mouth with boiling hot water, and then call my brother-in-law who is an ER doc for advice. I love this diner so much! I love to come here for dinner. We always order the lemon chicken over rice, broiled salmon. Mashed potatoes, turnips, and sautéed spinach are all my go tos. Management and wait staff are all very kind and hospitable. Soup here is delicious and it's a wonderful place to sit down and relax. Coffee is great, desserts are delicious. Thirty years later the interior remains the same with virtuality no deterioration, so light aqua remains the main color theme. Everything leading up to my plate arriving was properly performed. Water delivered, orders taken and coffee poured. You'll find the five stars and the small details of my experience are heavily correlated. Our table was quickly cleared and cleaned, set and ready in a moment. The coffee came immediately, a wonderful brew, strong and robust. Thinking back, I'm happy that I ordered my two eggs sunny side up, something struck me that there was something different about them. The yellow of the yolk was a noticeable bright yellowish orange, the yolks were quite thick and stood higher, perhaps thicker is a better way of describing it. The corned beef hash was not greasy, very flavorful and was well proportioned to the home fries and the rye bread was perfectly toasted and buttered. This is a member of a class of restaurant that seems to be on the wane here in New York City; the diner. I come here for the brunch specials when I want something a bit different for brunch, such as their corned beef hash or their French toast, which as others have said is... different in a way I can't quite describe, and of course in a good way. The French toast brunch special comes with bacon, one sausage link, and a very thin slice of ham underneath the French toast. I am writing this after having their corned beef hash brunch special, which comes with home fries, two eggs served per your choice, and toast. All brunch specials come with your choice of juice or wine, and coffee with free refills. Two blocks down on Austin St., you can get an organic guacamole and chips appetizer for $10 at a Hispanic restaurant, or a $20 brunch special at a Greek restaurant. Needless to say, I love restaurants that offer great deals. Their extensive menu has matzo ball soup and other such dishes, so if you're ever in the mood for Jewish dishes, they seem to have that on offer. The service is... spotty. I wouldn't say bad, but certainly not good. There is an older waitress I almost every time I come here on a Sunday who just seems... slow and inattentive. I routinely have to flag her down more than once for coffee refills. Also, a hearty laugh at people whining on here about insensitive depictions of Native Americans and calling them Indians, which is outdated and inaccurate. Management seems to have gotten the message at least, for I have never, not once, seen these images. In closing, if you want a good brunch special in Forest Hills and want something a bit different than your usual spots, but not different to the point you head to Roosevelt Ave. and get Filipino or Chinese for breakfast, feel free to give this place a shot. Austin House is 2 blocks away from my sister's place in Forest Hills, but when I checked Yelp, the first review that it had was pretty bad. So I hesitated before actually going there. Quite honestly, it was pretty good. You get fresh juice with any of the orders as well as coffee or tea, or even a fruit salad bowl. I ordered two eggs over easy and ham. My brother-in-law ordered an egg sunny side up with bacon. All came out very good. I guess we found a place to have our breakfasts in Forest Hills. read more

I've read a lot of bad reviews for this place but that was after I stopped in for dinner. The interior of this place is definitely dated and in need of a renovation. Old diners like this are either cool and retro or not so cool and kind of dirty. This one had a dirty vibe. (The bathroom is gross) The salt and pepper shaker on my table looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the 70s. My server was fine, but she was not the friendliest person. She spoke very little ... just took my order and disappeared for a good half hour. Ironically she was the one that told me the place closes at 7:30 when I walked in at 6:30. I thought -- who cares, I have plenty of time. Little did I know my order wasn't going to come out for 30 minutes! It felt like I was sitting there forever. I finished my water and then asked for a drink when she finally came back 30 minutes later. The diner was NOT busy. Maybe 3 other tables had guests. I ordered comfort food -- chopped steak with mashed potatoes and corn. It was a large portion and it was good. The mashed potatoes and gravy had an odd color but everything was tasty. It was the vibe of the place that put me off. A man came in at one point with the food that he had picked up earlier, screaming about how it was undercooked. The owner took the food out of the container and handed it back to the cook. I'm not even sure what it was. It was just so off putting, especially NOW after reading so many reviews about that kind of thing. I worried later, about whether I would have a stomach ache "later" and I did not. I love this mom and pop diner. There Are very few left here in Queens. The wait staff is very helpful and the service is very calm. When you walk in you forget about everything because you feel like you time traveled back to a time when diners were everything. I personally forget about all the terrible fast food on austin street when I'm here. You definitely feel like you've entered an old timers dimension and I love it. ::Bathroom Alert:: Clean bathroom for a mom and pop diner. The soap was filled the toilet paper was stocked. I always have a great time here I always get a burger. I trust them when they give me a rare burger. The plus is I've never gotten sick off their food. My only criticism is that one of the people who frequently answers, though he always gets the order 100% correct, is very gruff. I would recommend not being deterred by this. I suspect he is the owner or manager and has been doing this for so many years that he does not enjoy what he's doing. I'll agree once we got in and seated we started to notice how gross this place was. There were a couple flies buzzing, dirty dishes piled up at one of the hostess stands and uncleaned tables. Service was attentive but not intrusive, my coffee cup was always refilled promptly, and my Greek Omelet was spot on good and my home fries came extra crispy as I had requested. Solid diner food! Stopped by around 2PM on a lazy Monday, place had a few patrons. Service was fast, polite, and helpful. Swapped out fries for mashed potatoes when my boyfriend requested to add a side of the mashed which was super nice of our waitress. Our group changed our mind like 7 times lol, but she stuck with us super kindly. Coffee and water refills were prompt as well. Pancakes were surprisingly fluffy and, dare I say, quality? I had two eggs with bacon, hash browns, toast, all were good. Standard. My boyfriend ordered some sort of steak sandwich, which he enjoyed but I'm not sure I'd recommend lol! We also wanted to substitute a small salad for fries and was told "no" everything is a la cart. The turkey burger was soggy and clearly not fresh. The best old time Queens diner in the area, it's comfortable, homey, relaxed, clean. Service is good. Food is good, prices good. Unhurried, unrushed, uncrowded. The menu was vast with selections from breakfast food to lunch and snacks, but prices reflected that of a dinner time restaurant.
