I have had a great experience here. All the staff are super helpful and answer question after question after question. I am new to aquarium life, and have been in several times as well as called with questions. They always make the time for me and are very accommodating. This is a gem in the city of Austin. Since finding this spot I am here almost every week. They have the largest to my estimation freshwater fish collection in the area. Every time I'm here this place is humming lots of foot traffic lots of purchasing. Because I am an aquarist I signed on to their program which gives me a discount ...it comes in handy. I raise discus fish and they have a great array of Discus and complimentary fish to go in the tank with with my current collection. Again with my discount it can be applied to fish, food and hardware to keep everything running smoothly. My customer service experience here has been great you need to be patient and wait your turn because again these people are in constant motion or on "skates" either trying to help you or with others. read more

We were about to buy two fish so we asked the sales-girl at the cashier if she could help us with the fish. She said, "we're very low-staffed, wait for some minutes, someone will come". She looks pretty pissed too for no reason lol. And later, an old woman came helped us. Great selection... not so great customer service. Had to search for someone to help me get a fish after 15 minutes of waiting. Asked if they knew anything about the goldfish the employee said no but that they were healthy (without even looking at the fish). I mean I don't know about that... some were looking pretty lethargic. The employee seemed annoyed and not helpful at all. I find it irritating as well the percentage they take if you use a debit card. I understand it's a "minimal" percentage, but you're already paying a premium for product (which I don't mind I'll support a local business I understand the up charge for convenience and store costs) but you want more money for using a debit card. (Also money is money right even if it's change. Consumers are all about savings) Who carries cash anymore? Marketing wise I'd say do what specs does. Make the price that 3% higher and put it lower if you use cash so it doesn't seem so greedy and its incentive to use cash. It's just reverse psychology. Same concept but it makes the buyer feel like they're getting a discount rather then being punished. Although if you use a debit card at specs you aren't charged that surcharge it's only when you use the credit option so yeah. Would I come here again? Sure, but not any time soon. Hire people who are enthusiastic fish people that want to help and educate. read more

I asked for six fish but when I got home there was only five. I have a pretty 10 gal planted take with perfect water, filtration, and a heater, 1 week later two of the fish are dead. The other one seems to have parasites and ick. I hope she lives. I would say that there to is amazing,looking wise. The fish look pretty healthy. They have a lot of tanks and stuff. read more

I was there during the coronavirus shelter in place period to buy some mosquito fish (Gambusia). I bought 20 of them. When I got home I counted them, I found only 16. Maybe they were out. The price for 20 was $5, plus tax came to $5.41. I paid by credit card and didn't get a receipt. When I got home, I got a notice from Citibank that $5.55 was charged to my card. Even if you don't want to buy fish, you should stop by because it's not just a goldfish shop. It's built more like an aquarium than a pet shop and it's an architectural mini-wonder (gotta love a geodesic dome). I know nothing about fish, so I can't tell you what exactly they carry there, but they had very exotic varieties and in more colors and shapes than I've ever seen at any other aquarium shop. We just went there to look, so I can't say much about their prices either. Because it's a geodesic dome, the quantity of fish per square foot is amazing. There's a pond there, too, with koi and humongous turtles. Feed them. You're allowed for the price of a quarter. read more

Was greeted with strange looks & silence... The place supplies a lot despite its exterior. They have a large selection of freshwater & saltwater fish. The tanks are well maintained, although I did spot a few dead fish & some tanks were uncomfortably overstocked. The hubby and I went here today to look around. We had heard a lot of good things about this place and that it has a wide selection of saltwater fish. We are beginners so we had a lot of questions. Both the guys we talked to were very friendly and knowledgeable. They gave us a lot of good advice and ideas for the next fish to add to the tank once the 2 we got settle in. The store was well organized and I like that the freshwater and saltwater are clearly separated. The only thing I hated was how the beta fish are treated. They have the poor guys in little jars with closed lids on a shelf off to the side. It seems like the beta fish are put in the store as an after thought. That makes me very sad, because I have seen other aquarium stores with beta set ups that show much happier fish. The beta fish here are sad and neglected looking. read more

Amazing selection and great healthy fish (minus the guppies but what's new). I was in Austin for the weekend and decided to stop by for fun, I actually found some loaches that I've been looking for for quite a while now! I live in San Antonio and the fish made it back home safely. I made sure to keep them out of direct sunlight and opened up the bags at one point to replenish their oxygen. When I got home I drip acclimated them for a couple of hours and then put them into their new tanks. It's been a week now and they are very active and happy! I will definitely have to return for some freshwater gobies and Thai micro crabs! 100% worth the drive and my new favorite aquarium store!! read more

This place has an amazing selection of fish and they are not focused on making a profit. My husband and I went here over the weekend with a sample of our water, and the woman that tested our water told us she would honestly not recommend purchasing any fish until our ammonia levels are down. She told us to come back in a few weeks and she would help us pick some out. I feel confident that other places would have sold us fish instead of cautioning us, so that alone will make me return. read more

Best most friendly staff I have experienced at an aquarium store I can only imagine that you get out what you put in as they always seem to have a full house of customers. Being a veteran of customer service I always make sure to be reasonable and polite to staff when I show up during busy hours. Everyone seem extremely knowledgeable and willing to help me within the limits they have to deal with. I have several tanks both salt and fresh water and find that they almost always have what I'm looking for and if not then they are willing to try and get it in stock for me. Austin Aqua-dome is the BEST! We have been to multiple stores throughout Austin and San Antonio and I can say none even come close to Aqua-dome. They have a huge selection of fish and corals. The staff is very helpful. We especially love Nate, he's extremely knowledgeable in all aspects and has helped us to set up our tank from the start. We are all about going local and supporting Mom and Pop stores, but this stores literally robs you. We had a terrible experience with everything we purchased. We bought a brine shrimp kit which was over $30 in the store, but when you buy it elsewhere, it is $15. $15? For the exact same kit. I can understand upping the charge on products a little bit but two times what it needs to be is robbing people. I would have been completely happy purchasing the kit if it was upped in price a little but this is the craziest I have seen. We also asked for duckweed since I went in with a fellow science teacher. The original guy helping us was awesome and he said he could get us some. It is a weed and all places we have gone to and asked for a little bit of duck weed told us we were doing them a favor by taking some so they gave it to us for free. This store however, a lady came by and saw the duck weed and said it was $4 worth. Are you kidding me? Duckweed is an invasive species and you know it yet you charged two teachers for it? On top of charging us double of what we should had paid for the brine shrimp kit. My heart hurts for these kinds of places because greed takes over and money becomes everything. $1 for a small bag of feed to fed your turtles that you got from turtle pond on campus. Really? You can't pay to feed the free turtles you got? If you want to get robbed of your money, come here. This is a terrible example of going local gone wrong. read more

Shrimp selection not so much...now, the customer service is awful. There's one lady there that's very condescending and rude. Started coming here almost a year and a half ago when I first decided to get into the hobby and it's still my go to fish store! They are super knowledgeable and didn't hesitate to educate on the many beginner mistakes I made. My fish definitely reaped the benefits of my patronage here. Wait times depend on how busy they are and it may feel like you're ignored at times but I've learned that's not the case. They take their time addressing customer questions and really take care when handling aquatic critters, so just be patient! Nowadays I really only come here for ghost shrimp and the occasional loaf of homemade bread. I never tire of the look on my significant others face when he asks where I got the bread! I don't know who makes it but the "Fish Store Bread" is pretty darn good. read more

Best Selection, Staff and Facilities in Central Texas. These people know their stuff. They are always working hard and will answer any of your questions honestly. I see some reviews that customer service isn't great but I disagree. Their top priority is to make sure that the fish are happy and healthy. So they will tell you if the fish you want won't be a good fit and they are ALWAYS CLEANING so you often have to track someone down to get help. But I assure you that's a good thing. Highly recommend Also forgot to mention Hunter! He's always running around cleaning tanks or assisting customers. Very knowledgeable and friendly! He remembered my face after a few visits. read more

I live in Cedar Park. The Aqua Dome is quite far away from me, but I still make the trek there to buy fish because the place just rocks so hard. They have a HUGE selection and a knowledgeable, friendly staff. Prices are about average. The reason to go to the aqua dome is the quality of the fish. Spend some time checking out the tanks and you'll find very few (if any) sick fish. For a place with eleventy-billion stocked tanks, that's really an accomplishment. Of the many stores from which I've purchased aquarium fish, the aqua dome has given me the greatest success. On the one and only occasion where fish died upon addition to my tank, they cheerfully hooked me up with new fish from the next batch, which went on to thrive and even spawn in my tank. I have been patronizing this store for a few years. Until recently I have been into freshwater aquariums, and they have always been helpful with getting me fish etc but I never needed advice. Recently I got into saltwater aquariums and I have bought lots of stuff from them and gotten a handful of advice, and they're great about helping as much as possible. The guy upstairs named Hunter is the most knowledgeable person when it comes to the saltwater aquariums. Everyone in the store has knowledge of some kind about everything if you just ask. If they don't know they will tell you that they don't. However: Read up on your hobby! You have Internet, so use it. Don't blame them for not being able to help you fully if you are a novice. Youtube is a wonderful resource which I have used to gather lots of information about my new saltwater hobby from drilling the glass to making your own sump filter to how to take care of any type of aquatic life form. One thing to note: The weekends can be very busy and you won't get the same attention you would if you were to go there on a weekday. read more

Stopped by Austin Aqua Dome. Really neat store with 2 levels and a huge selection of fresh and salt water species. Tons of fish inverts and corals. They had the biggest selection of wrasses I've ever seen in a store. Their corals all looked healthy and were priced well. I picked up a few things and can't wait to get them in my tank. While I am no real expert on the quality of a local fish shop, the folks at the Aqua-Dome are well-versed in service-oriented manners. This is one of the few places where there is a fair balance of "Can I help you?" and allowing you to browse without being bothered. The fish all look healthy--as do the invertebrates--and the cured live rock I purchased there is settling nicely into my new nano tank. Even though it's a bit crowded and some items are relatively out-of-reach, it's the best store of its nature that I've found in Austin. The staff is helpful and trustworthy--this a big deal in the aquarium industry. Get your fishy on. read more

The animals are beautiful but the staff are either misinformed or uneducated. We wanted to buy several koi and goldfish from here and, being completely ignorant on the subject as we've never owned fish before, we asked what we need to do before we introduce the fish to our new 700 gallon outdoor pond that we'd just built ourselves. The guy behind the counter, an older gentleman, said to just toss them in & they'll be fine. I said, "we don't even need to temper the water or transition them slowly? It's a brand new pond; we don't need to check the water for levels of something or other?" And he said naw, chuck 'me in. It kind of felt like he just wanted to make the sale and get rid of us. Needless to say, all but one of our fish died. Since then, we've studied up on the subject of ponds and pond critters and have created a self-sustaining ecosystem, with no help from any store clerk. We now have two bullfrogs, two turtles, and several koi and goldfish. The rest of the koi, btw, are from petsmart and are twice as big as the one lowly survivor from our first attempt. We initially named her mama-san because of how much bigger she was than all of the minnows we added later, but now the name doesn't suit her since she's now the smallest koi. Maybe the trauma of the whole ordeal stunted her growth, or maybe she's a different species--we don't know. Anyway, not too sure how to feel about this place. read more
