The care they provide for the fish, plants, and the overall organization and layout of the store is glorious. It is the kind of store you could find yourself popping into just to kill a little time, because it's lovely and the vibes are so nice. If you're an aquarist that dies a little inside everytime you see a betta being kept in someone's decorative antique thimble? Rest assured that their bettas are not kept in cups, but in lovely little temporary tank homes, that are all clean and well maintained. I didn't see a single betta that didn't pass the "curious, clear eyed, symmetrical, glide and dart" test. I also heard them teaching a couple about nitrogen cycling, tanks size, and letting them know that they really wouldn't advise buying their betta today. Though if you have the cash to burn they do have pre-cycled tanks ready for purchase. I've been here twice now. Once to get all the gear for my tank and fishless cycle, and then back about a month later to pick up my first betta, Mr. Pants. I'll be going back this weekend for a nerite snail, and the weekend after that for a couple of skrimps provided our betta accepts the snail w/o a fuss. So with all this glowing review, why only four stars and not five? Well, the service could me a smidge better. The lad that helped us on our first visit seemed like he really knew what he was doing, but was super awkward and really hard to talk to. We made it pretty clear that we were totally new to aquarium keeping, had nothing, and needed a full setup, but he left out several things we ended up finding out we needed. The most important of which was a water testing kit, which seems like the first thing that might come to mind if someone is buying all the stuff to do a fishless cycle? The guy that helped us out on our second visit was friendlier and easier to talk to, but did kind of seem like he was in a rush and helping us was a bit of a hassle, even though it was a Tuesday afternoon and there were like four people in the shop. I would normally grant space for a busy, popular store being perhaps understaffed, or overworked, but both times we went there were at least four employees on the floor, it was just that only one of them seemed to actually be there to assist customers. Anyway, none of that is enough to keep me from going back, obviously, but just know that you need to do your own research about what you need before going in, and be willing to overlook some less than stellar service. A small price to pay for access to their incredible and well kept stock.

Someone reached out to me stating the kitty I wanted was still available. I filled out an application, but for some reason, BOTH my references didn't receive their forms. So, we had to forward the form to them to get it filled out ASAP as SOS was indicating they hadn't heard from out references. We had the situation fixed within a day or two (it was during Christmas time). I sent an email to Dee to touch base if they've received the forms from our references and then nothing but crickets chirping. I waited and waited and waited (knowing my references filled out their form and giving them the benefit of the doubt) but then this morning a got an email that the cat we'd been waiting in for 3 weeks+ was adopted. No reason, no explanation, nothing. I even sent an email this morning (giving them the benefit of the doubt) and have not gotten an answer per usual. It's amazing to me, they want to come do a home visit, get our references, want to speak with our vets, want all our pets shot records at a fast rate, but their communication is slow AF. This was supposed to be a Christmas present for our family after losing 2 pets (we used to be a dog family until my son asked for a cat) but now 4 weeks of work is GONE without even an ounce of communication besides an email from Petfinder that the cat we were waiting almost a month for is adopted. I'm officially a proud parent of one Siamese cat! We were on the hunt for our first kitten to adopt…read moreto our family, but wanted something more exotic. We found the Siamese Oriental and Snowshoe Cat Rescue network (SOS) via adoptapet.com. SOS is an incredible non-profit rescue center that takes in exotic breeds who have been abused or neglected. Though their application process is extensive, I appreciate how well they vet their candidates. They want to ensure their kittens find the purrrrfect forever home. In addition to the detailed application questions, you're required to submit your driver's license, a utility bill to verify your address, and 3-4 references (one of which cannot be a friend), along with your current pets' most recent vaccination records. Adoption rates vary depending on the feline's age and breed. Once your application is approved, you'll have a phone interview with a staff member or the executive director, Dee, to discuss the care of your potential new cat and address any lingering questions. Our application process took about 2.5 weeks from start to finish, including the interview. If you're in the area or want to make the trip to meet your potential new cat in person--it's definitely an option! We visited Ms. Dee's home and left that same day with the 9-week-old kitten we had applied for.

We were very…read morehappy with our experience at this small shelter that was attentive to us as soon as we walked into the space. After a long day of waiting on kittens in Austin proper and watching them all get adopted before we got a chance to see them (I say this in the most loving & happy way too), I told my partner we should try coming to Pflugerville and see what the cats there. We were VERY happy we did. From walking in to signing the paperwork for adoption our experience was positive and loving. The volunteer that cared for our cat then was super sweet to us and to our cat as she said her goodbyes to her when she found out we wanted to adopt her. The volunteer took great care of packing our cat in the carrier and even gave us the blanket, a few cat toys, and her cat brush in a nice bag with other goodies, food, and even supplements from Tomilson's Pet Store (a great Austin pet store). We loved the sweet care and transparency around our adoption. Because we adopted a senior cat our adoption fees were waived and the health report the shelter provided to us was informative for us on determining what kind of care we would expect when we adopted her. I really appreciated the transparency from the staff about our adoption. They were professional and were very kind and patient with us on all our questions around our new loving cat. What a great success story it has been for us in adopting Dusty. She was a surrender from her previous owner but now is in our loving home and receives all the treats and wet food she wants in her senior days. Thank you to the staff and kindness of those we met and will not forget at this shelter. We appreciate your care and giving us an opportunity to love her forever.

I reported a vicious dog at a residence nearby that attacked my miniature poodle to both my HOA and…read moreAnimal Control. The HOA would require an owner to get rid of a dog, who is a disturbance, but does nothing about a vicious dog. I would not want to see a person lose their beloved dog, but if someone would address the issue and perhaps, give them a warning, the owner would ensure that the dog behaves better. After speaking with 311, I was informed that they could send the owner brochures on leash laws, since my dog was not bitten. That just doesn't seem to suffice and I implied that. Then, it was mentioned that an officer could go out to speak with the owner. I don't feel confident that this will be addressed. I Pray that this dog doesn't viciously attack another dog or person to the point where it is more detrimental. It seems the dog and his owner are being given a pass because my dog was viciously attacked without being bitten and the owner tried to remove her dog, after the attack. The owner should have removed her dog immediately, when I first asked her to get her dog. I believe that she felt like the course was clear because her dog started off just sniffing my dogs, before viciously attacking my dogs. Just sending leash laws without someone addressing this issue will result in a repeated attack. The dog clearly needs to be trained. Otherwise, this goes across as being acceptable.
