We had eaten there previously and were not at all impressed. We aren't picky but we do know good food. The previous management had mediocre food and poor service so we were hoping the change would be good. We love this area of Michigan and we have a nice cottage on Lake Huron so we are always open to new opportunities to enjoy the area. We were hoping the new management would work to create a great new place to have dinner or just hang out so we went for dinner with optimistic expectations. The service was pretty good - average to poor but that seems to be the norm in this area. Low pay equals low enthusiasm I guess. The owner was friendly and made us feel welcome. I love white fish and he assured me I would never find better. Needless to say I had high expectations but was very disappointed. The portion was tiny, smaller than you would get on a sandwich. It was cooked properly and had good flavor but 3 bites for dinner doesn't make the grade. The other meals were ok, nothing to cheer about. For the cost of this dinner we expected something better. So, this place was a 5-star joint, but I had to change my rating. Since the management change, the food has taken the backseat. Portion sizes are odd on most things (fried pickles/chips too small for the price). The fried pickle basket was raw, then 1/2 raw after we sent it back. My club bbq sandwich was soggy from bread to meat to lettuce. The jalapeno potato salad was small and not really potato salad due to the size of the potatoes. My husband's burger was bland with bland chili on it. It seems like the best thing on the menu is the quesadilla since that's the only meal that was eaten completely. I think management has some tweaking to do. I don't think they should have kept the name because Au Sable Inn is known for their ribs, brisket and French dip - most of which are no longer served. Stopped to grab lunch in between fishing the Au Sable. What a gorgeous and delicious spot! Came during the lull around 3 PM and had the place to ourselves. I was so disappointed I chose this place for a group of friends for dinner. It was 8:30pm so I thought, it'd be nice not to go to a restaurant that closes at 9pm and rush a group of 6 in for dinner. Not many restaurants were open that late, so we opted for this one. Called and reserved for 8:45, in which we got seated quickly. Not sure what our waitress was doing, she was very cool, but we were afraid to ask for things like cream/queso/more coffee etc. She would take 15m between every request and we haven't asked for much or put in our orders yet. We chose an outside seating facing the river which was beautiful, until the sun started to set and it got dark. There was no lighting and we couldn't see, we just all moved ourselves inside after ordering entrees. We were anxious and saw staff cleaning up, it was 9:30 and they closed at 10pm, but was already vacuuming up and putting chairs away. By the time we got our food at 9:45, within 10 minutes we were trying to eat quickly so staff didn't have to stay late. We didn't want to be those "jerks". Everything was extremely underwhelming, not just because it was close to closing time. Salads were iceberg and plain like you can get from a fast food drive thru. Burger was so dry and over cooked, it was hard to swallow without a glass of water. Every entree ordered this night went unfinished, maybe that's why we called quits within 10 minutes, because it was not that good. Was there today at the end of the Canoe Marathon. Very disappointing. They took all the BBQ off the menu when the new owners came in and we went just because we loved the smoked meatloaf sandwich. That was too bad. The new menu really has nothing to distinguish it. I had a burger--which was good enough. Even with the race in town and the place well staffed, service was still very slow. Our waitress was pretty poor and we couldn't find her when we wanted to pay and leave. Overall, we will miss what used to be a great way to end the Marathon. read more

We sat here for over two hours with no food ever showing up. The waitress was phenomenal! She was constantly coming to us telling us she was trying her best! She eventually managed to at least bring us some salads and chips and salsa (which we didn't even order). She was trying to get the cooks to make our food... they never did. We left after waiting for over 2 hours. The manager watched us walk out and never said a word. Obviously the party in the back room took higher priority than everyone else in the restaurant. Went here and was told if I wanted any chance of getting a seat to sit at the bar... even though there were multiple seats open all throughout the place. After sitting down it was about a 10 minute wait to get my menus and order my drink which took about another 10 minutes to get. They forgot us and didn't get our order for a long time. When the owner finally came to get my order I ordered salmon. His response was "Jesus Christ!" This appalled everyone sitting at the bar and myself as well but some people don't deal with stress well so I let it be. A couple minutes later he comes and tells me they are out of salmon and I should try their white fish. I got the white fish and it was awful!! Tasted like it had been sitting in hot water to keep it warm. There was no flavor and I had to salt and pepper it to death. Besides the nice people I met at the bar the experience was horrible. If I could rate it zero stars I would. The owner really needs to get his act together. Also you shouldn't be letting a two and a half year old little girl run around behind the bar and through the dining room. You need to find a babysitter. Hearing her say "dad, daddy" repeatedly and get ignored every time was crushing to watch. read more

I ordered a martini and received a glass with vodka and ice cubes in it, garnished with a salad olive. I've never had a martini served to me like that before! I ordered the prime rib and that was flavorless. The green beans I ordered as a side were not even cooked all the way. Service was absolutely horrible and we had to have the owner bring out condiments that the waitress forgot to bring(and continued to forget even after we asked her repeatedly). The owner even cleaned our table after we had finished with our meal. Four years ago, this used to be a decent restaurant, but now it has gone downhill. read more

Stopped in during a trip. We were welcomed and sat where we liked. There is a view of a river or canal. We sat window side because of the rain. Bartender Tony that welcomed us came over and talked with us. He recommend a beer they had just got and sent a sample over with our drink order. We just had Patty melts since it was lunch. Worst perch dinner that we have ever had! Said It was pan fried lake perch. But it was heavily breaded with no taste at all. Even the sides of potatoes & cole slaw were marginal. They comped the 3 meals. But that's not the point. We were hungry, came for dinner & none of us could eat moe than one piece of fish. Since this is one of the very few restaurants in Oscoda, they need to get their act together. We are up here most of the summer & WILL NOT return. I can cook better with my eyes closed! We have been attending this place for many years the food has always been okay and very nice views. But, last visit we witnessed a scene by the bartender and the manager of the bartender which left a bad taste in our mouths. How BOTH OF THESE WOMEN treated a table next to us will complete disrespect and attitude and made a huge scene . I mean one bartender lean over into this women face and was yelling , it was completely appalling . That just showed us that this place doesn't care about the customer. My husband and I ate at the Au Sable Inn for a second time since it reopened with new owners. We are fans! Great menu, friendly staff, and good food. The white fish was outstanding and the chicken salad on a croissant was really tasty. The she crab soup is super too. I would recommend this restaurant very highly. Appetizers and drinks pit stop while out exploring town. The room is HUGE and the tables spread out. Nice view to the river canal but they need to clean up the patio which had old patio furniture and a long ago broken bean bag toss game. It took a few minutes for drinks to show up. Apps were quick and pretty good. We had flaming cheese which had a little too much oil on it and not enough lemon to put out the flames so I had to blow it out. Wish I could say that the experience never changes. Usually we go to the Inn once or twice during the summer with moderately pleasant meals. Went to dinner Sun.7/8/12 for a birthday dinner and was told right off the bat by our waiter that he didn't know what kind of wines they had. I had to suggest to him that he go ask. Then we were told that they had run out of chardonnay that some of the ladies wanted- couldn't someone have run out to a store before dinner hour and bought a couple of bottles? Hell, I'd have stopped and bought some had I known. After ordering mixed drinks, our waiter told us he didn't know what drinks looked like(not a surprise- he looked about 12) and asked us to just take them off the tray for him. Next we ordered- only to have him tell us that they were out of items that we were ready to order (mussels & BBQ). The shrimp orders were over cooked and the "birthday girl's" salmon was so overcooked that she couldn't finish. When we let the waiter know, he paused for a deer-in-the-headlights look and just walked away. Throughout the meal, we were repeatedly asked, "Are you still workin' on that?" as they try to whisk away side dishes. Let my cole slaw be! All in all, an embarrassingly bad experience for our dinner party. Hey Au Sable owners- train your waitstaff, re-stock your bar, keep an eye on what gets sent out of the kitchen, and have a manager come around to ask if everything is all right. Not impossible, you just have to care seven days a week if you're going to be open seven days a week. read more

The AuSable Inn has recently opened with a new owner and was very busy when we arrived. Service was good with lots of extra waitstaff. We were greeted promptly by a friendly server. I agree with the last reviewer, their Martinis are the worst. I tried the Friday night perch dinner as well. It came out cooked so hard that I could not cut it with a knife. The waitress apologized but the did not offer to correct it. This place is starting to be known more for it's "night-club" atmosphere on the weekends than it is for it's dinning. read more

I've only eaten brunch here. All you can eat brunch on the weekends, starting at 10 am, for $7.00. Breakfast staples like eggs and bacon and hashbrowns are all done very well. My only complaint - no fruit. read more

Was pleasantly surprised. The staff was very friendly. We sat outside near the river but came inside once it got dark as the bugs were bad. They went out of their way to try to satisfy my Gluten free wife. One of my grand kids is very picky and he loved his dinner. I had liver and onions and it was excellent and a full meal for $10. If you're looking for a California-cuisine salad or anything more than standard bar fare, keep looking. Burgers and fries my friends. And the service is friendly. Young, but friendly. We only wish they didn't make the girls wear referee shirts all the time. Maybe on Sundays when there's NFL on. But all year? You can bring your kids here and not worry about them acting like monkeys. They can run around on the grass by the river in back, or play a few video games while you put down a couple of cold beers. When it's 90 degrees outside and the wind has died, the Au Sable Inn keeps the AC kicking. This is a quintessential 3-star joint, and if you don't expect anything more than that you'll have a great time. read more

Three of us, two adults and a teen, ate here on Monday night. It was a pleasant experience. We were able to sit on the patio and enjoy the river. We were quickly seated, and our waiter took our order quickly. Adults ordered wine. The list was not extensive but contained some good choices at very reasonable prices. Our waiter (I believe his name was Aaron) was excellent. He was attentive and friendly but not overbearing. We all ordered fried fish dishes. The food was good but not great. We tried the AYCE fish yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. We have not heard much good about this place for several years but decided to give it a try for lunch. The wattress said although it was early they good do the AYCE Fried Pollack for lunch. Our order was out really fast and was better than expected. The fish was hot and served with just the right amount of batter. The fries were real potatoes and very good. Served with coleslaw it was a decent $10.99 meal. I ordered a second order of fish just because it was all you can eat, although I didn't really need it. Waitress was excellent, management stopped by table to check with us if everything was satisfactory. Overall a good experience. We will be back. read more

We ate here two nights in a row this past weekend and would recommend based on our experience. We sat at the bar, and the bartender Frank was friendly, energetic and entertaining. The lake perch was prepared well and "melted in your mouth." The "Taste of Michigan" salad with cherry vinaigrette also was tasty. There were at least two local beers on tap both nights. Never had any problems with the service here. Staff always seems friendly and attentive. The overall taste of the food is never an issue either. Yummy! HOWEVER, the portions and prices are awful. Ordered a pulled pork sandwich with fries, got an ice cream scoop of pork on a roll about as wide as a coffee cup. Helping of fries didn't make up for it. It was about the size of a kid's menu fry at McDonald's. All this, for $9? I learned my lesson. Sadly, I had to stop at a gas station afterwards to get a snack to fill me up.
