Really nice restaurant located on a hill adjacent to US 23. The restaurant was recommended by some local friends and it did not disappoint! As we entered the restaurant you could see their commercial grade smoker going with inviting aroma's of smoked meats wafting through the air creating both a nice visual and a mouth watering invitation to enter the restaurant. I get a kick out of these these bad boy smokers as too often they are hidden behind the restaurant. Relative to our meal, we got the Cod Fish and chips and the full rack of baby backed smoked ribs. Both entree's were well made and very tasty, especially the ribs, where the the portion size were so large we could easily have split both of these meals into two which is something I would suggest if you are coming here and usually eat a small to moderate portion size. For drinks we got their Old Fashioned which was well made and quite tasty in its own right but a tad small volume wise in my opinion. I normally expect 2 full oz's of Bourbon in my drink and not sure this drink hit that mark. Just a minor gripe here and did not detract from my meal by any means as evidenced by the 5 stars. Relative to staff and facility, the staff was super friendly with great follow up where the facility I would describe as clean, a bit rustic (in a good way) and most importantly a comfy environment to enjoy your meal in. Also, as it was a Friday nite and a band started playing later in the evening that just added another layer of goodness about this business and overall dining experience. Overall, I am a big fan as this business as hits on all cylinders when it comes to a nice dining experience and one not to be missed if you are in the area. As a cautionary note, they get real busy right around 5 pm on a Friday with a waiting list that moves fairly quickly. I am assuming the same thing probably happens on Saturday. if you want to get seated immediately on those evenings you should probably arrive a tad bit in front of 5pm to avoid the wait. read more

The Mountain is a lovely little community gathering place as well as a stop from here to there. While I reside in the Metro Detroit area, I have family in the idyllic environs of Michigan's northeast. I've split my time between "down below" and "up north" for the better part of 30 years and counting. While we don't frequently eat out when in our second home, we do tend to gravitate toward the ones that have been appealing. The Mountain is one of them. On the surface, The Mountain may seem like a run-of-the-mill rural bar-n-grill. Hardwood structure with the classic rural decor, a hunting/camping motif evoking a sense of a lodge or luxurious cabin. The menu may also seem, on the surface, to be all over the place, ranging from the classic burgers-n-fries to steaks and pasta to pizza. It would be a mistake to dismiss The Mountain's menu in a condescending "oh look, they're trying so hard." No, they not only try, but excel. I've been to The Mountain a few times, enough to where I know -- as a down-stater -- that The Mountain's pizzas could easily compete with and oftentimes surpass some of the more celebrated pizza outlets situated in the suburban and urban areas of Michigan. Detroit-style pizza is no longer the exclusive domain of Detroit. What I sampled of what The Mountain calls "deep dish" was easily in the upper echelons of Detroit-style, competing in a field filled with the likes of Buddy's, Green Lantern, Jet's, or any number of independent or franchise chain locations. (I say "what is called" because when I read "deep dish," my instinct was to expect to Chicago-style) I've had their traditional round pizza. I've had burgers and sandwiches. I've yet to be disappointed at the quality of food and prep but also the service, which, for us, has always thus far been kind and accommodating. I've taken my whole family to The Mountain, I've taken just my daughter and mother-in-law for lunch, and I've gone solo later at night. Each time, I've left satisfied with the meal and the experience. Even if there are some improvements to be made with some dishes, they've been open to feedback and constructive criticism (like with any establishment, just don't be a jerk about it). The Mountain is one of this metro-Detroit guy's go-to places. May they always be that gem on US-23. read more

Well worth the 80 minute drive for us!! The food is always delish and the service friendly. Liz was our server this time. She was great! Their blooming onion is sooo good. I ordered a dinner salad and the Alfredo pasta with shrimp. They were huge and it was so creamy! My husband had the perch and seafood Mac & cheese. His fish was a bit over cooked by a minute. A little to crunchy but easy to do with a panko crust. Oh and their carrot cake was delish too!!! Fair prices for a very good meal. We will be back! read more

I was very pleasantly surprised by our visit here. The decor gives off a very different vibe than the food suggests. We came in with a group of 5 right at dinner time and were told it would be a 25 minute wait. Not having been here before, I was nervous because every time I've been told it would be 25 minutes, it was more like 45 minutes to an hour wait. We waited no more than 20 minutes and our table was ready. Service was fantastic. Everyone who works here really hustles and they all seemed so happy to be there. We were so well taken care of. 10/10. We started with the fried pickle chips to share, and they were good. I had the chicken fajitas and tried some of the rattlesnake Mac and cheese, which is what I would have gotten if I didn't get the fajitas. The food was delicious. Nice restaurant in Black River. The server was very friendly and attentive and took our drink order within a few minutes. We ordered the shrimp fajitas, perch dinner, and the St. Andrew's cod dinner. The perch and fajitas were very good but the batter on the cod was too thick, and undercooked as some of the batter was doughy. The fish itself was tasty but they need to go with a lighter batter. My first trip back to The Mountain since the new owners took over. The new, 2-page menu includes food worthy to be called a meal (not a long list of overpriced bar food) and still boasts a full page for their wonderful pizzas. The Bang, Bang Shrimp Tacos were fantastic! It's gonna be hard to break away from these to try anything new from the menu. Service was great. I've always had good service here. We arrived just before the dinner rush and wished we were just a little bit earlier to get a little better quality of food. The spinach and artichoke dip was great, the second best I have had in quite a long time. The clam chowder was fantastic. The nachos were decent, next time I would not add the beef due to it making it extra greasy. The pizza was not quite cooked as long as it should have been. Everything else was as to be expected. All around solid meal, yet nothing that wowed us. We visited The Mountain Bar & Grill on a Thursday evening around 5:00. We were seated immediately and our server was responsive and helpful. The staff were the best part of the dining experience. They would receive a 5 star review. We ordered the sampler appetizer platter and two side salads with ranch. The portions were huge and the prices were reasonable. My husband and I both agreed that there was nothing we didn't like, yet there was nothing that would make us desire to choose this restaurant over others on a return visit. My favorite up north place to eat! I have family in Black River and what luck to have a place like The Mountain so close by. My favorites are the white fish tacos, the reuben, and pizza and I can't wait to try a burger next time I visit. The dining room has a great modern "up north" feel, seats a good number of people, and is clean. They have a nice bar area and clean restrooms. I love seeing the smoker hard at work when I pull into the parking lot. The waitstaff has always been excellent when we've visited and most of the staff has been there for years. It seems like the food quality is getting better and better over time, portions are large and the ingredients are high quality. Plan your arrival time because waits can sometimes get long on weekend nights and holidays. I look forward to going back again! read more

I took my friend there to celebrate her birthday. The waitress was probably one of the best one I have experienced in a long time! The food was amazing and plenty of it. It was a great experience. We weren't rushed as we warned the waitress we wanted to sit chat and catch up. I wish I could remember her name. Cocktails were awesome. If I could give more stars I would. First time visiting Michigan's eastern coast and this is the best sports bar in the area. Great atmosphere and very generous portions.

Went for a birthday dinner and they were very busy, my brother-in-law didn't eat his ribs said they were ok, my wife and I got a pizza and it was burnt on the bottom, still edible but not good, my grand daughter also got a small pizza and wouldn't eat it at all because it was burnt. The service was good and all our food came out at the same time. The atmosphere is very nice , I will give it another chance but not on a Saturday night, I'm sure the issue was they were just too busy to keep up. read more

Hands down the best spinach artichoke dip I've ever had - and I've had a lot! It's my favorite appetizer, and I sometimes make a meal out of it. The little naan breads have parmesan toasted on top - it was so good! I did not get our server's name, but she was fantastic! I wanted a beer, but I know nothing about beer, so she brought me a couple samples before ordering. The burger was good - we got an original with cheese and bacon. I always order hamburger well done, but I wish I had gotten it medium well - it's my fault it was a little dry. The bacon was fantastic and the cheese was on there generously! Published hours list a 9pm closing. We walked in exactly at 8pm and were told to order as fast as possible because the kitchen was closing. I think at 8pm you should be able to walk into a bar and grill that closes at 9pm without risking not being able to order food. Since the fryolator was still hot we ordered fish and chips which were really quite good. The server was kind enough so we may be back, but if we do go back it won't be at 8 o'clock on a Wednesday night. read more

The clam chowder was wonderful and the seafood Mac and cheese was to die for! The service was wonderful. Being a restaurant manager in the past I could see She was the only waitress and was busy but it didn't effect our service. She was very patient attentive and knowledgeable about menu. Love this place. We have property in Barton City and we make sure we come here whenever we're up north! The BLT pizza is the bomb! Not too crazy about the friendliness of the staff. They have a lot of locals that come in at night that must be their friends. Seems like they're more interested in entertaining them than taking care of the their tables. We came in at dinner rush hour on a Sat. and from the time we ordered our appetizers and food we had it in 11 minute's!! The people were friendly and checked on you to make sure you had what you needed. They ALL do a wonderful job! They are an amazing establishment, with great owners that seem to have a great teamwork established between front of house, waiting staff, and kitchen staff. Great JOB to all! I grew up in Alcona County and I've been in the Mountain Inn prior to its Extreme Bar Makeover. It was...a bar. Now it's modern and gorgeous. I was in awe when I stepped in. I was hoping the food tasted as good as the inside now looks. And it does. It's nothing special. It's bar food. But it's bar food done right. I appreciate that. We started off with an artichoke dip appetizer. This dip was good, it was certainly competent. However, it came with these fried pieces of bread as opposed to tortilla chips. I could eat my weight in those things. So so good. I ordered a fish and chips special and my companions ordered burgers. The cod was hand battered and fried to perfection. My companions' burgers looked juicy and SOMEONE ordered onion rings which were out of this world. Really solid. I would go back in an instant. In fact, this will probably be my new go-to place when I go home to visit. read more

I could list the obvious, very friendly staff, super clean, very open and roomy interior etc. But let me say that the items we ordered for dinner were triple A plus. I had ribs, the BBQ sauce was the best I've had in a long time, a little sweet, a little tangy! Perfect. The side vegetables were cooked perfect as well were the red skin potatoes.
