I chose to go to Alpena in a very off-season time (April), so there weren't a whole lot of choices for dinner. After looking for suggestions on Yelp, I decided to try The Black Sheep. This is obviously a neighborhood tavern where people know each other. I felt a little out of place, but still, I slid into a booth (ok, I moved the table and CLIMBED in; they seem to be repurposed pews and the edge is high) and the young woman who was tending the bar -- and who seemed to be the only server working -- came over promptly. I ordered the Westminster -- turkey, bacon, cheese, a cranberry pecan dressing on focaccia. And what the menu doesn't tell you is that the chips that come with it are plentiful, delicious and homemade! It was a good, big sandwich, and I took half of it with me. An odd note: one of the regulars, who had pretty obviously indulged in Happy Hour (actually, nearly everyone did, because as soon as it was 7:00, they all left!) came up to me, looked at my sandwich and said, "That looks good. I'll have to try it some time!" If you're looking for a pub with an English flair, this is the place to stop. read more

Our service was good, but our server was hustling to serve the entire place on a busy day. We didn't feel at all neglected, though. The place is full of locals it seems, like everybody knows your name when you walk in and get looked at for recognition by everyone. The sampler appetizer is the only food picture I took, and it was just mediocre In taste and presentation. My fish and chips was actually walleye, not cod, a pleasant surprise I didn't see mentioned on the menu at all. Have it - for real - it was absolutely delicious! The place is cozy in atmosphere has unique decor and is relatively small. The booths seem to be repurposed from somewhere, and are at an odd height for the bench seating. I had to twist the table to get in and out of the booth but it really wasn't a bother for more than a second. A live local band was playing, which gave the place a great vibe. They were really good, and as I am to understand, many live bands are frequently featured here. read more

Stopped by for a drink and a snack on a busy Tuesday a bit after 6 pm. Sat at the bar. Surly bartender (a guy) approached me with no greeting and asked what I wanted. I could see he was busy but that doesn't give you an excuse to make a customer go away. I ordered boneless wings (Tuesday special, $.75 ea). What eventually came was chicken nugget sized fried chicken bites with a puddle of buffalo sauce dumped on top. Something looking that unappetizing should never have left the kitchen. I heard this place was really good so my co-workers and I thought it would be a great idea to explore. First impression, ambiance, was pretty cool. It has a great vibe, kind of old school feel, brick walls, etc. They will tell you that service is limited so it would take a minute for everything. When we got there, there were two workers at the front of the house. I took a star off for service, not cause the lack of workers (COVID), but because when my friend requested additional items for her meal, his response was "you want more?!" And it was merely lettuce and tomato which didn't come standard like other places. He also forgot her drink, took a really long time for the bills, and didn't come over so my other friend could get another beverage. Then the food came. The food is all bar food and would only recommend when you have nothing else to eat when you've been drinking. Everything is fried. The burger is a frozen patty and small. The sample platter looked like the small tacos were deep fried too long and the insides fell out leaving the outer shell and the cheese sticks weren't melted enough. This is NOT a gastropub so do not think this will be epic food. The fish taco was pretty decent but it's not like usual fish tacos in a 6" shell. It was in a 8" wrap. French fries were on point. We went to eat on October 20 and when or food finally did come it was hard and cold like it was sitting under the heat lamp to long . The waitress was slow and not very friendly . It took 45 minutes to get out second drinks and we had to call her over to get them . She walked right past us twice and we all had empty drinks. read more

In times of COVID, one must temper one's expectations. I stopped in for a weekday lunch, as I was on vacation and was in the Alpena area. Apparently, this 4th of July week, so was everyone else. I sat at the bar, and noted that Susan was the only regular staff on the floor and bar, and she was HUSTLING (in the classic sense of the word, meaning working her tail off, not the modern definition of trying to score side jobs). Most patrons were understanding and patient, though some seemed to forget that we're living in a unique period of history right now. Just because Michigan recently opened up fully for business doesn't mean that businesses can instantly get back up to pre-2020 levels of infrastructure at the snap of impatient customer fingers. Nevertheless, Susan did everything she could for every table, as promptly and as courteously as possible. As the place filled up, they did have to warn a party of 4 that space was limited, and just completely turn away a party of 12. Again, temper your expectations. The same supply chain issues that affect all restaurants didn't spare Black Sheep, of course, so some things on the menu simply weren't available. No matter, it's a bar/pub/tavern in Northern Michigan. So burgers and fried foods are a-plenty. Once more: TEMPER. YOUR. EXPECTATIONS. Don't go in expecting three 3 Michelin Star duck confit and Chilean sea bass. Go in for a good burger and northern Michigan sensibilities with some British Isles decor and malt vinegar for your "chips" (fries), and you'll be alright. read more

Make sure you come in early if you want actual dinner food. Arrived around 915, got our drinks right away but had to wait over 15 minutes for a menu or to even be asked if we wanted food. They only have appetizers now, and they acted annoyed we wanted food. We waited to put in our order but decided to leave after another over 15 minutes of waiting. read more

A northern Michigan take on the British pub, it was nice. Staff (bartender) was polite and helpful. She recommended the beef and noodles. A bit different, with blue cheese in the mix. Tasted OK. The beef was a bit overcooked, so it could have been better. They had instruments set up in the front and ads for live music, which I could only imagine would be pretty loud in this smallish place. Overall, it was alright. I'd probably try another place when I'm back in town. read more

We sat for 10 minutes before we had to ask for menus. Then, rather than giving us menus, she asks us if we are ready to order. I went up to Alpena last weekend to visit my friend's sister's new Pub and I was not disappointed. The Black Sheep is a traditional English Pub with wood booths and a beautiful bar. They serve lunch and appetizers at night, but are mostly a bar and often have live music. We had lunch and it was fantastic! The cheddar, potato soup rocked, and so did the fish and chips! Lastly we had the deep fried green beans - so good ;) However, the greatest thing is their bar selection. I discovered 2 new Hard Ciders here: Crispin and Original Sin. The Crispin will soon be on tap, but the bottles were delish! A wonderful addition to Alpena! read more

A true gem in Alena? Heck yeah! Awesome atmosphere! I've been to some of the best pubs in the country and this place rivals any bar. The staff is very friendly and they take pride in beer and wine. Please don't tell your patrons you are tired or worked multiple shifts the minute you come to their table. And if a wait staff/employee has clearly had enough of serving time? Drugs? Something? SEND THEM HOME. Don't let them proceed to mess up even more by misplacing orders that end up with MULTIPLE issues. And then comp us our drinks?! How is that good business? Awesome fried fish! You have to try the fish dinner. It's hand breaded in their own mixture, and I was truly loving every bite. Not greasy, crispy, and awesome. Also, the sides and cole slaw were great. We stop here every time going North and have never been disappointed. Since Covid wrecked the previous year we were hoping they made it thru the wreckage. As we turned the corner we saw they were open and it was like a fire-new day. Susan regaled us with everything they did to stay afloat and brought us up to date on some local happenings and what she had been doing. Rather than list everything we have ever eaten there, I'll just go with two of the items I always get no matter what else we order that we haven't tried. It may seem mundane to most but the Scotch egg and the fish basket are two my my favorites there. Burgers choices and salads are good and we have yet to order pizza as soon as we can nail down a choice. On the other hand maybe we will rely on Susan's advice. She hasn't led us wrong yet. This is a great place to go and have food and drink. The fish and chips is great, every time. Very consistent. And if your a whiskey drinker, this is the most honest pour you'll get in Alpena. Good selection of top shelf and a wide variety of beers on tap. Thumbs up all the way. read more

I visited Alpena for Air National Guard annual training, and looked for a local pub to eat and enjoy a cold one. I had the great fortune to come across the Black Sheep! I went there twice - the pizza was so good the first time and Jodie (sorry if I misspelled it!) was so nice that it was a no-brainer to go back again. Kris, the owner, waited on us on the second visit and she was just as great and the sandwiches were fantastic (I had fish and my buddies had the Westminster). The apps were fresh as well. Yikes! So annoyed we stopped here. Came here on a Friday night around 8:30 for a drink and a bite to eat. We were unsure how the outdoor seating worked, so we stood at the bar waiting to be acknowledged to ask if we could grab a table. 10 minutes later and 2 other groups of people helped before us (that came in after us) we were told we can grab whatever, ordered our drinks and asked for menus. The bartender told us she'd be right out to take our order. Another 10 minutes later and she finally shows up, only to smoke a cigarette with her buddies at the table literally right next to us. It's fine, we're not hungry, and you certainly aren't busy if you have time to smoke. After her smoke she asked if anybody had helped us- obviously not since you're smoking and not doing your job!! I asked for our check and she apologized and gave us the drinks on the house. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is bc the bartender realized she screwed up and gave us free drinks. I can't rate the food since we never ordered any. The service sucks, even for being a pub. read more

Worst service I've ever experienced. Ordered 2 large pizzas and 2 sandwiches and waited over an hour and a half for them. When asked what was taking so long, the waitress said that she didn't know. 10 minutes later we were told that the pizzas were burnt and that it would take 10 minutes for them to make new pizzas. 15 minutes later, the pizzas were brought out. To end our wonderful meal, we asked for the check 4 separate times and was told that our "check had been lost" and that "they were busy." Eventually the check was brought out and was split wrong, after we had explained how to split it. I then requested a box for our remaining pizza and had to wait another 20 minutes for that, and request a box 3 additional times before I received it. Was certainly not worth our time. read more
