The Ausable Inn was a recommendation from locals. It was a must-try and I agree! The restaurant sits beautifully aside the Ausable River. The views are so pleasant with lots of outdoor seating. The indoor seating looks nice but we didn't want to miss the views and the great weather. The service was excellent. We loved the appetizers that included golden fried mushrooms and the creative and delicious giant pretzel charcuterie. The burgers were juicy and flavorful and the fish and chips were perfectly crispy, light and tasty. We also enjoyed the sweet potato fries. Stopped in after we dropped off our daughter at Ymca for some cold beer and an appetizers. Place is big outdated but our bartender was very friendly and fast. We ordered mushrooms and cheese sticks appetizers. Both were great. They have nice extensive menu to choose from including some local fish dishes. Pool tables are also available in the back. Good meal and nice service. We are here on a Monday evening. We had a pleasant experience with both the atmosphere and food. The food was solid with the fried ravioli and dill tartar sauce the stand outs. The rest of our meal was average (which isn't a bad thing right?). Great place to eat right off the river. Indoor and outdoors dining available with umbrellas for shade. There was a wait for the food but it was all worth it once it arrived. We ordered a cup of the chicken pepperjack soup (which was well seasoned and flavorful), an order of fried mushrooms (that were cut so the ration of batter to mushroom was excellent), an order of spinach artichoke dip (which was fresh, well proportioned and the pita chips were my favorite part of it all)!! After our appetizers, we ordered a fence dip with chili cheese fries. Everything was fresh and hot (hence the wait). The staff were very friendly and attentive! We'll be back!! read more

Worst service ever. We waited a ridiculous amount of time to get our sides. I literally had to go up and ask the hostess. Never asked us how the food was, never brought refills, they ran out of glasses and were service plastic-- it was kind of a wild experience. Food was good though! The service here was great. Location is great. I ordered a Smashburger which was spectacularly mediocre. They did not grill the bun and the burger was very small and unseasoned while the bun was very big. Smashburger should have a crust this had none. The burger was mostly untoasted bread. My husband and I had lunch here yesterday and it was Fabulous. I had the French dip and he had the perch dinner, both delicious! I only wish they had Cole slaw on the menu. It was Father's Day and we pulled in and they were not busy which was promising. Turns out they only had one waitress and one bartender working and this poor girl was running around like crazy. Took forever to get our drinks and take our order. First thing we are told is they are out of several items. Then the appetizer came out with the food but that ended up being a good thing because my burger was burnt, I took one bite and it tasted awful. When our food finally came out the Mac and cheese was cold. Our waitress did not check on us that often or even update us on when our food will be out. Very unacceptable! Dozen plus of tables empty inside, at least 6 tables on deck empty, lots of servers standing around being happy. Really Great Music on deck! SO!, SO my group of six will have to wait ( trying for social distancing for my health reasons Covid), outside in parking lot in sun along with dozen other customers waiting to be seated too! 30-45 minutes! With the comment, we don't have servers? Server have certain tables that they service! What! they can't or will not help on other tables! To take care of customers! What!, You've got to be kidding I can see them, and tables ! totally unacceptable! This would have been third time in a week! Your food and specials are wonderful, and I can kind of understand staffing problems in kitchen, even running out of some dishes, your food was superb, and at time you've stop taking dinner orders for them to catch-up, ok! Bar was open , good! To finish up my comment, I normal just don't return to Restuarant with this level of issues! You have so much good going on at AuSable Inn, and now you need to fix problems, you can't afford to turn away $180. Dinner and bar tab plus tips and stay in business. I hope you do! Ordered carry out once and was good. Decided to stop in a few weeks ago. Waitress was rude & rolled her eyes at us multiple times. I asked if they had a drink menu & she gave me a dirty look like I was asking an odd question and replied "we have a full bar". Then asked what was on draft and she had no idea. While we were eating dinner a wet dog got into the dining areas somehow and jumped up on my fiancés lap while holding our baby. Fish was nice and crispy and flakey, also got the munch and crunch burger which was soooo good I finished the whole thing. And the Michigan salad was also very good especially the cherry vinaigrette dressing! Only reason I gave 4 stars was the wait. Seemed very understaffed and had 1 host 1 waitress and maybe the manager and owner running around trying to get stuff done. Our group stopped in for dinner and enjoyed our experience here. There's a nice menu with a lot of variety, friendly service, a nice drink menu, and good food. We sat in the back patio and had a nice view of the canal and lawn. The staff stayed a bit later than closing to accommodate our group. The wings were pleasantly spicy, nicely sized, and warm. Solid blue cheese sauce too. My fish and chips were delicious! Crispy fries with crispy and non greasy Pollock. The cole slaw was good too. Apparently the place was closed for a while and has new management or new ownership. The owner was a nice guy. He was working behind the bar, served us, and chatted with us last weekend. We had a coupe iced teas, and some fried fish. The food was good overall. The fish and chips were a little on the greasier side, even for fish and chips. My pan fried perch was a little dry, but overall it was good. The place is nice and clean, with friendly people and good food. I'm considering buying a cabin down the street. Ok, where is this fabulous "she crab " chowder on the menu? We came there to try out the new owners and menu. Arrived at 6 pm on a Saturday, and very few people in the restaurant . Asked to sit outside because it was a great summer day! Umbrellas were not set up and it was like a deserted island out there. Owners are sitting on a gold mine with that patio that they are not using! A group of 4 came outside for the view and I overheard them say" 40 minute wait with all these open tables". Obviously the dinner rush started. The menu was very limited. We had only a few options of fish. How about a simple walleye or perch dinner! If you are going to try to be "fine dining" with your fancy menu , then try to do it right. Otherwise stick to the basics. As far as the food is concerned: Had the whitefish with lobster cream sauce. Sauce was so bad! It was a bitter, rancid mustard sauce! Not a single hint of lobster!Fish portion was small for an $18 entree. Service needs improvement. We received our salads with no silverware and waited until the waitress finished taken another tables order before getting them to us. The salads were pre-made with finely diced tomatoes and onions, and we knew this since Two of the four salads that were ordered with "no onions "still got them. This was really a toss up between 3 and 4 stars but I settled on 4 due to the clam chowder this year. You must order it if they have it-not too thick but not watery and chock full of REAL clams. Au Sable Inn is one of the ONLY nic(er) places to eat in Oscoda. The owners know this and sometimes it shows in the service and food. My family has a couple cabins down the street and we eat here a few times a summer. This year the place seems to have stepped up it's game both in terms of service and food quality. The food is your standard pub fare with a few mexican options and (sometimes) dinner specials. Each time I have ordered one of the specials, however, they have been out of it. Now I understand that restaurants in town have difficulty gauging the holiday crowds but at one point I had to ask the server exactly what entrees they DID have that evening... Bottom line, if you're hungry for something other than fast food this is yoru best bet in the area. Fish and chips are amazing, mashed potatoes are homemade and the drinks are well made. I am told the place turns into a night club after dinner but, honestly, who goes up north to club it up when there's plenty of firewood stacked? read more

How embarrassing to bring our out of town guests to the Ausable Inn and the food and service were horrendous!!!!! Everytime we tried to order something they were out of it and we had to order something else Lobster Bisque, salmon, liver and onions etc when we did hit on something they had it was dry, cold and not made right. Patty melt was made with toast and a slice of american cheese...sent back. Philly cheesesteak sandwich was extremely dry and again a slice of american cheese on top......cold Fries were cold and soggy and I could go on and on.. This actually was the second time this happened to us with a group of friends We were told that the truck was coming tomorrow(Monday) Frank if you want to stay open things need to change and quickly or another Oscoda business will close for good. We have been coming to the AuSable Inn for many years with mostly very good results. Tonight was not the case from a service perspective. I ordered a drink from the bartender Donna and she was very rude and did not give me back all my change, building in her own tip, that she did not earn. Our waitress was OK but not very attentive. The food was good but took a long time to get. Overall it does not seem that there is much managing of the business going on. The staff seems to be mostly very young and untrained. I hope that tonight was an exception but I have a feeling that it is more if a rule now. The next night we went to Tait's Bill of Fare just around the corner and had a much better overall experience. The food was very good and the service was excellent. It was an older place with no "Sports Bar" atmosphere, but if you are looking for friendly service and good food, I would recommend going there instead. read more

Really surprised by the poor rating on this place. I've been coming to Oscoda for 35 years and this spot has always been good since it's been open. We had a great sever, and ate the Sinker, Michigan salad, fish and chips and flaming Greek cheese. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone with kids and a large group.
