I've been going to Aunt Pookie's on and off since around 2010, and it's one of those places that just never misses. Every time I come back, it feels familiar in the best way. I usually go with my former coworker--now my best friend--and we always order the same things. We actually stopped by again the other day, and both the guys behind the counter and the lady remembered my order. After almost a decade (and definitely not coming consistently since 2014/2015), that honestly blew my mind. It's such a good feeling to be remembered. I always get the chicken salad with ranch, and I don't know what they do to their chicken or salad, but it's absolutely delicious every single time. We also had the onion and jalapeño, which were great. My best friend tried one of their baked potatoes (I think those might be new) with chicken, and it looked really good--perfect portion size, too. Prices are very reasonable for a BBQ spot, the owner is super nice, and the place is always busy during lunch, which says a lot. They're located in an office area and seem to be open from around 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. The only small thing was a few flies flying around, but honestly, that didn't take away from how good the food and service are. I visited here many years ago and wasn't impressed. A group of friends wanted to come here after a nearby meeting recently and while I told them of my memory of it they still wanted to go so I tagged along. Moving along the serving line I ordered a sliced brisket sandwich with a side of beans and a soft drink. Nothing has changed. The food was bland and uninspiring. The beans tasted like pork n beans out of a can and the brisket had little flavor and the bbq sauce was bland too. This place was cute and I think what people don't like is the ambiance, because even though it was clean and there were a few other families it was deadly quiet in there. Like dead-crickets. Everyone looked as if though they just escaped the Great Depression. The employees were bright and friendly, which doesn't really explain why the customers looked miserable. And not in a rude way mind you, just when I think about all the other barbeque places I go they are lively and fun. This place does have good food, good service, but it's not a lively place, which might turn some people off. I actually liked my simple sandwich it filled me up and was yummy. I know I'm warning you about how quiet and sad the people there looked, but I am telling you I had a good time. I don't need to be around lively people, but I know everyone's not like that. It's not a part of town I frequent and the area looked like it was struggling, so that might explain the behaviors. However, unlike other restaurants, the quietness was refreshing as i got to enjoy lunch better with my husband. If I'm back here again, I'd go have some of their larger plates to have food to take home. read more

Aunt Pookies is a nice place with long time employees that work there. I've been going there for over 10 years. The burger special for 12.99 is good with fries and drink- fresh vs fast food at the same price. The fatty brisket and ribs are good. Their brown gravy is good as well. As far as the barbecue sauce, I have had better for sure, but when I add some Tabasco to it, perfect. I have one word to describe the food at Aunt Pookies, fabulous!!! This is one of my favorite restaurants to go to for barbecue. First of all, you were always greeted with a smile, and a welcome. The food is always freshly made and hot. We have tried every item on the menu, and there is not one item that we do not like. My favorite thing to eat here is the ham. Holy cow. It is amazing. You get enough food to at least either share or take some home for leftovers. The hamburgers are huge and made right in front of you. They slice your beef or ham, right in front of you. Your french fries are not made until you order them just like their onion rings. Holy cow. The onion rings are to die for. I absolutely highly recommend this restaurant to anybody and everybody. Whenever I can, I'll come to aunt Pookies for lunch. This is truly my favorite place to eat at, and I always get the same thing because I'm hooked on their ham. Their salads are huge and they are full of meat and vegetables in. they are just amazing. They're baked potatoes are huge and filled with enough meat that you will be satisfied. So take my word, and run to Aunt Pookies and give them a try. Once again, I love this restaurant, I have not one bad thing to say about them, and I wish they were closer to my house so I could eat there every day. you will not be dissatisfied, and you will leave full. I drove a good ways to try out their sausage on a bun sandwich for me and my wife! After I paid for the sandwiches the owner told me we only have enough sausage for one sandwich which I thought was weird considering it's a bbq place! This is a hidden BBQ gem just North of the Memorial Town & Country area on Beltway 8. I had the brisket and sausage plate and both were excellent. They had the traditional sides and the fried okra wasn't a special order. The bbq sauce is now one of my favorites. I wish they sold it. The service was great. Friendly staff. The customer from the start was spectacular and made me absolutely at home. The nephew of the owner was there to explain the background of the place and name. His suggestion of the Pookie burger was not regretted at any bite that I took. It was 1/2 lb with grilled onions and basic condiments/toppings. It was well proportioned and well cooked. There juice was still noticeable in the burger. The seasonings were present. They serve steak cut fries that have a seasoning salt on them. Nothing special. They have a plethora options. I would suggest the bbq ribs nexts. Actually... any of the bbq. The prices have a range of affordable to getting costly once you finish adding everything together to complete your meal. Really solid breakfast tacos. I work up on the beltway and there's nowhere else I'd stop being breakfast for the office. Service is fast and friendly, they're open early, and location is great especially if coming from I-10 and heading on the beltway north (just take the feeder road). Having 30 mins to burn and it was noon..... and the nearest place was Aunt Pookies..... what the heck, I have driven by here plenty of times and it was usually busy, so today was my lucky day.... or was it? Feeling like some Q, but while standing there looking at the selection of meats, I called an audible and ordered a double buffalo burger. Placing an order was in need of a translator, but between the three working the line, it was made. It was ok at best and they are stingy with the orders of fries. Lunch took less than 30 mins, from ordering till finish.(the only plus) I am feeling generous with the two stars, but it was edible....(not sick yet) I now realize why the lot wasn't full when I left.... some had been there before and chosen not to return... which is what I will chose to do. read more

I came here last week when I was visiting my sister, her husband, and their brand new baby (my niiiiece!). My sister's nickname for me is "Pookie," so when we saw the sign for "Aunt Pookie's" (given that I JUST became an aunt for the first time!), we absolutely HAD to try it. Plus, being from the DC area, I was dying to try some "real" Texas BBQ! Unfortunately, I wasn't terribly impressed. The sides I got (mashed potatoes with gravy and cole slaw) were both very good, especially the potatoes, but brisket and pulled pork I ordered (I got a 2-meat combo plate) were lackluster. They only had flavor when doused in sauce, and the brisket was okay moistness-wise, but the pork was quite dry. I guess I should've looked this place up on Yelp before committing to it! Pricing is a little expensive for what you get, however the meats were good and definitely enough to fill you. What's it going to take to get my sandwich right? My office has lunch delivered from Pookie's every Monday. I regularly order a grilled cheese sandwich with bacon and tomato added to the sandwich, and sadly more often than not it comes out wrong!!! I have been given a BLT, a regular grilled cheese, cheese and tomato only, etc. There is usually something missing from my sandwich. Today, the bacon is missing off of my sandwich and they forgot someone's drink. Yet, they never forget to charge me. I just don't get why it seems to be so difficult to get such a simple order correct. This has literally been going on for years. Please don't get me wrong, I like Pookie's. They have the best baked potatoes and potato salad I have ever had in my life!!! And the customer service is great! The delivery drivers are always so kind, always so willing to drive back to the restaurant to get my correct order and return with it. However, making my sandwich this way seems to be an incredibly difficult task for the kitchen. It's really frustrating to have to wait another hour to eat my lunch because of such a careless mistake. If it only happened occasionally, I wouldn't be on this site writing a review. It literally happens ALL OF THE TIME!!! Great place to catch breakfast, lunch or dinner. I lived off of their breakfast tacos for about 2 years when I worked in the oil industry over in that area. They've catered dozens of times to the company I work for. The owner Mr. Audi makes sure that you are satisfied. Not to mention they aren't over priced like most bbq places in Houston are. You can go in and get full on $9-$10. I think it's safe to say that I'll continue to visit this location. Plus it's an easy access and exit right off of the beltway. Aunt Pookies is 5 mins walk from my office and I am no BBQ expert (Mike W is the King) but I know good food when I get it and everything I have ever tried here has been top notch They do brisket, chopped beef, Buffalo, HUGE ribs amongst a host of other stuff such as Chicken Fried Steak and Chili. I remember how astounded I was the first time I ever came here. I ordered the baked potatoe with ham and when it arrived it was the size of a Water Melon. Seriously, Texan potatoes are massive and the salads here come in a bowl that you could hold a party in. Just about everything requires a "t'go" box Once you have got your meal then you can dip into the salad bar for free and it is always crispy fresh and topped up. They also have corn & cucumber relish, je t'adore and coleslaw that tastes homemade. Hang on, just dribbled on my keyboard, gimme a min.... Pookies also does breakfast and this is where i got my first grits, different is all I can say. We have a little joke running here as all the staff are Mexican and their English is not so hot so when they come up against our British accents things can get a bit perilous. We have now all taken to saying 'Han' not Ham and making sure we annunciate carefully. The girl who does the breakasts is so funny, whatever you order for breakfast she always repeats it back to you but in a different order than when you said it which then confuses the hell out of you whilst you try and assemble in your head to make sure it is right.. "Could I have the Croissant with Egg, Ham & Cheese please" "Yew wan Egg & Han & Chiz crushon hokay?" "Yes please" so following the lead , the next day you go and order.... "Could I have the Egg, Ham & Cheese Croissant please" "Yew wan Crushon wit Chiz & Han & Egg hokay?" "Yes please" We then stand there like naughty school kids stifling laughter and trying not to wet ourselves until we get outside. All done in the best possible taste!! I would give 4 stars here but a couple of things need to be noted ... The grub is pukka but it comes on styrafoam plates and the cutlery is plastic. You have to be really careful when working over your ribs as you can end up with the tips of your fork embedded in your face, twaaaang. I saw someone here get hit on the back of the head by half a plastic knife from the other end of the room. It was like a scene from the Matrix as it slowly arced its way down the restaurant. If you do not want your ears to bleed then do not go on a Wednesday if you can help it. Two guys come in during lunchtime and play 'LIVE' music using an acoustic guitar and a Drum machine/music box.
