I will definitely take my bikes back here to be serviced. I took in two mountain bikes for a tune up and after I picked them up when I got home I rode them and I was having trouble with the gears on one of the bikes. I called and someone came by and picked up the bike, checked it out again and dropped it off at my house again. I didn't have to ask them to do it either, they offered. Part of the issue was that I was not shifting correctly. They helped me figure that out, adjusted one of the cables and made sure I was happy. I am very impressed. After the big box a-holes failed at having the simplest kiddie bike chain, these guys whipped out the repair link to save the day. They charged me 17 cents ! and armed me with the knowledge, and I vowed to BANISH Academy from my spending account forever. This is another fantastic reason to go local- even when the big box 'locals' dont carry the most basic of basics. Fuck you Academy, Welcome to the 'hood ATX. What a great place to buy a bike and get your bike serviced. Long story, short: I needed a brake part and had waited about 10 days and it was not in yet. Instead of me waiting any longer, Eric (who works for Brett), pulled the brake part off a new bike and put it on mine! Not only that, he wiped down my bike so it looked cleaner and then even fixed an annoying brake click sound that he did not like. He did all this and only charged me for the price of the part (no labor charge). ATX Bicycles is exactly what small business bike shops were like in the 1960's when I was growing up. It is a wonderful neighborhood bike shop that cares about its community and its bicycle customers. Big box stores cannot compete with this type of service. read more

I fell in love here. As someone who was always told to get a bike, but not wanting to commit hundreds of dollars on a new one I wasn't sure on, I tried to buy used bikes-but could never find something decent. I'm 6'5", so in order to have a proper bike, it needs to be large. They had a couple and I got a bike that fits me perfectly. I ride my bike all the time now. I talk about riding bikes a lot to the point where I'm sure people are annoyed. On mornings when I'm feeling particularly inspired and energetic, I'll ride 15 miles to work and another 15 miles back. Biking has made my life in general better. This would not be possible if the folks at ATX Bicycles had not helped me, who had no idea what I wanted or needed, find the right bike for me. They instructed me on how to do maintenance, what to watch out for and general riding instructions. Sure, I didn't listen then and made mistakes, but still... I don't know much about how this shop would be for experienced riders, but if you're going to pick out a new bike you can't go wrong here. read more

After a really bad experience at Jack and Adams, someone told me that ATX BIKES was the "only place to go." After I signed up for my first triathlon, it was an intimidating process to walk into a bicycle subculture that I didn't know, and on top of that, to ask for help. It was SUCH a relief to walk in to ATX BIKES. After visiting several shops, it was a Relief to NOT be greeted by someone too pretentious to take the time to talk to me. George and Brett were awesome. They showed me some bike options, helped to fit me for a bike, spoke about pedals and clips, and even did (on the spot!) all the necessary repairs my current bike needed. What's awesome is that I never felt rushed or pushed aside. That's called good, old fashioned, customer service. Since they moved out of their old space and are in transition into the new one I needed to know how to get my hands on that pink bike! Brett was great from the start and helped me navigate how things are working with them being without a shop. Eric picked up where he left off with me and today I bought my bike!! Eric went out of his way to meet me at the Veloway so I could ride before the buy. After that, we settled on a price and I ended up with my bike! I can tell they love what they do, and are passionate about the people and bikes. I was going to buy a cheap bicycle from a big box store, but none of them fit my needs exactly, so I went to ATX Bikes. I explained my back problems and the staff immediately knew which bike would be perfect for me. They took the time to go over every aspect of the bike and allowed me to do a test run in the parking lot. The service was helpful and friendly and I did not feel rushed. They also put on the kickstand I purchased and made sure everything was in tip-top shape. After two weeks of rides, I am still in love with my bike. I went back in to purchase a water bottle holder and the staff remembered me and made me feel welcome. This is a great shop with great people! read more

Unfortunately our experience was less than enthusiastic. Visited to find new bike peddles for my son's bike and the customer service was bad. The man was busy talking it up with a friend in store and seemed bothered that I came in. I was with my son and we asked if they sold peddles....he said yes but said if we did not have bike with us he could not help. Never bothered to ask make, model or size of the bike....which I had in hand! So we left store in search of someone more helpful! They offer fantastic customer service and they remember me even though my visits are sporadic. They are not like the big box bike shops and they go out of the way to ensure I want to come back to their shop. Was having trouble adjusting my new wheel on my bike so wanted to bring it to a shop nearby that could take a look at it. Stopped by on an early Friday evening and the guys were great. Adjusted it, tested it, and readjusted it. Didn't even charge me! Not sure how much business they normally get as the shop was empty when I was in but as I was leaving a family seemed to be heading in. It's the closest shop to where I live and I will definitely be visiting again for bike needs. read more

Frank and his crew are the best. Went in with a sick hydraulic brake on my daily commuter and got it back the next day dialed in. Because of the weird off brand brake Specialized spec'ed for the original Frank had to do some creative modification to adapt a new brake and rotor. Works spot ON. read more

Perhaps 2 stars instead of 1 (if I wasn't so upset after this experience) because I had not had a bad experience before (during multiple visits and accessory purchases) and on this visit, the main contact I interacted with when I arrived was helpful and honest. Sadly, the person I spoke with on the phone was not helpful, obviously didn't care that much, but worse yet, when I attempted to communicate with a guy named Dan, who was the manager on duty at the time, he was a total dumbass. Not manager material. He literally told me he heard my conversation with an employee (which was not possible since I was on the other side of the parking lot, when the guy I had initially been misled by (Dillon) that gave me a quote that was completely innacurate after I drove from Bastrop Highway based on what he said on the phone, I was disappointed. Then as I was leaving with my bike (that I had brought there to have repaired) and Dillon came out (he said later to apologize) and proceeded to make me wrong and be a disrespectful jerk. I mentioned to Dan this and he literally stood there and told me to leave and never come back. Ask and yee shall receive. I've been in sales management, sales coaching, and other forms of sales and services for over 40 years and I have never seen such a disrespectful manager in an escalated situation in all my life. Dan is simply not manager material, doesn't appreciate customers, and doesn't know how to talk to people. I had met the owner shortly after this place opened and really liked him. I liked that he supported the austin inline skaters club and others that do the full-moon ride at the veloway. Dan blocked me from communicating with him too when I told him I wanted to talk with him. Come on man!! It's not like their had ever been particularly Texas friendly during all of my previous visits. But this was so far the other direction, I had to speak up. Bye Bye now. read more

These guys are great. I brought in a cheapo kids bike, and an ancient trail bike to fix up. While these bikes are junkers, the folks at ATX treated them great, new tires, brakes and roadworthy for $60 each. When my kids are old enough to spend bigger bucks on a 'real' bike, we are going to spend it at ATX. read more

ATX bikes is new, it is local, and yes, they have just a few employees. I LOVE AMAZING customer service and did I get the at right away at ANY Bike (small) shop in town, eh, not really. I go to Austin Bikes, and they know me personally, so when they are with a customer, they don't say hey Sarah! They don't acknowledge me to my standards, but they are good. ATX is the same way. They aren't really coordinated to suite everyone's needs at once. They have to learn what the word "estimate" and "quote" are, but with the help of this site maybe they can become better! =) I don't go often, but I want to give them a chance. Would you open a Bike shop if you did not care about bikes and people riding them? I would not. Maybe they just need experience and a lesson in business ethics. That is easily handled. read more

Legen.... Wait for it... Dary! These guys are great! I just moved to Austin about 6 months ago, and was in need of a bike shop, but not in a big hurry. Naturally, my car decided to throw a temper tantrum. Who knew the check engine light could actually blink? So, I'm stuck without a car, and a bike that needed new tires and a tune up, but no way to get it to a shop to be fixed, or so I thought. ATX Bikes went out of their way to help me out. Within an hour, Brett was at my apartment to pick up my bike and take it in for me. He quickly assessed my repair needs, and made some recommendations as to other things to help me make my bike a safer and more comfortable commuter. Within a short time frame, he called me to let me know it was ready, and then delivered it back to my apartment, ready to go. The quality and value of the repair and add-ons was great, but you cannot put a price on customer service like I received. This is why I will be back for future needs and purchases. Any place will take your money and fix your bike, few places would go out of their way to pick it up for a new customer with minor repair needs, and even fewer would do all of this without hesitation. So when my doctor told me that I needed to get more cardio I thought getting back in the saddle would be a pretty good start since back in my youth I was quite the cycle punk. Of course back then, the pickings were slim, you needed to go to UTcampus to Freewheeling and after that there was only TBSS this side of the river, that catered both to the novice rider and the connoisseur with equal enthusiasm. But now in Circle C, with the Veloway just down the road ATXBikes is bringing that old school Austin feel that everybody is always looking for but can't seem to find. I'm a 78704 native and I have seen a lot of shops come and go and I hope this one sticks around because they have the whole package: expertise, great customer service and quick turn around. Great location. Always willing to give advice to the novice, too. Give a try and you won't be let down. read more

I recently went into the ATX Bikes location before they moved across the street. I was looking into getting some new shoes as my old ones were falling apart. When I went in I didn't know what I wanted. After talking to the two guys behind the counter they criticized the fact I didn't know what I wanted. I asked if they had a catalog or something with pictures and they showed me a few that were way out of my budget. I ended up going to another shop I used in the past who actually helped me find the shoes within budget. ATX Bikes on the other hand, I would only go there if I knew what I wanted so I could get out and not be criticized about my choices. Another time before this last visit I went in to buy a new wheel and they wanted to overcharge me for them. I scanned the UPC on my iPhone and found out they were $100 cheaper online. They would not honor it so I went to another shop that had the same set for only $20 more, and they matched the online price. Again, only go here if you know what you want, customer services is sub-par. read more

GET IT IN WRITING! I couldn't disagree more with the other positive reviews. My experience was just the opposite. I took two bikes in on a Saturday for repairs. The repairs were very basic and the owner quoted me a price of $50 for one bike and $100 for the other for a total of $150. The $50 was to replace a crank arm which for such a basic bike repair sounded high to begin with. He promised a delivery date of the following Wednesday. The promised delivery date came and went and then on Friday (2 days late) I get a call from the owner saying that the bike he quoted $50 was now going to be $90 and the bike that he quoted $100 was now going to $150 for a new grand total of $240. What??? So we went from $150 to $240...a 60% increase. When I talked to the owner, he said that the original quote was just an "estimate." Ok, so I'm to believe that he only game me an "estimate" on two very simple repairs that a bike shop does all the time. When I dropped them off, he even gave me an exact price to the penny on the parts. So was he off that much on the labor? Highly doubtful. And don't forget all this took place two days after the promised delivery date; so it was obvious that they hadn't even started the job so who knows when I would have actually been able to pick the bikes up. Since I needed the one bike for a trip we are taking, against my better judgment, I went ahead and had the crank arm replaced (only after the owner finally agreed to do the repair for $60, after much doublespeak and claptrap, but not an ounce of contrition.) I told them no way on the repairs to other bike. I had to learn the hard way. Don't make the same mistake as me, if you choose to deal with these people GET IT IN WRITING or you will be sorry. read more

Let me preface this by saying I was a bike mechanic for a few years in between high school and college and know bikes and the culture. There is a habit of bike shop employees to look down on and rip off people who don't know much about bikes. The difference between good and bad bike shops are which ones are honest and forth coming. ATX bikes is not a good one. The conclusion I've come to is that these guys aren't very knowledgeable or they are just jerks. I think its a bit of a combo plate myself. Actually I will say its just one guy in particular that works there that has given me problems. One other employer seemed ok when I went in a separate time. TLDR: This one mechanic who works there is at best a terrible mechanic and at worst a dishonest and snotty one. So I went in one time to have a wheel trued and explained that I had been working on it and could get it trued laterally but was having trouble with spoke tension. I had my suspicions that the rim was beyond repair but they assured me it wasn't. They were very prompt with the repair and called me back right away. Upon picking it up I rode the bike around the shop and the tire blew out. Turns out they forgot to put a rim strip on. They put a rim strip on and remounted the tire. I mention that there is a noise coming from the wheel and they assure me its just the valve on the tire. I didn't want to make a big deal about it and was running late so I took their word for it and paid. Get home and the spoke tension is all messed up and that's what was making the noise. Take it up there 10 minutes later and the guy acts extremely put out when I tell him whats going on. So he says the rim is dead, just like I had brought up when I first brought it up there and he said it definitely could be fixed. At this point he just stares at me like he's waiting for me to leave. I have to bring up that I don't think I should pay for it. He says the boss is gone and I'll have to come back up another day. So finally track down the boss and he refunds my money for the cost of the repair but not for the rim strip. The thing is why would I have bought a rim strip if the wheel wasn't fixable like I suspected in the first place. This is a long boring story for sure but it gives an idea of the kind of place they are running. Also, checking spoke tension when truing a wheel is bike mechanics 101. Either he doesn't really know what he's doing or he knowingly tried to sell me an obviously faulty repair. I had been in before to talk about getting a new mountain bike and asked the same guy some very specific and pointed questions about recent mountain bike geometry and technology. The response was what amounted to him trying to make me feel like a fool and some pretty uneducated and canned replies. He actually even laughed at me and looked at the other guy like they had some inside joke. So I don't know if he just didn't know and that was his way of keeping face or if that's just his terrible sales technique. Either way it was obnoxious. I know this seems like I'm just complaining to complain but if I didn't know any better I would have believed these guys and paid for a lot of crap I didn't need. It seems to be a problem with some bike shops but there are plenty of good and honest ones around too. The reason I give two stars instead of one is because they rent mountain bikes and the other time I went in a different employee was pleasant. read more

I have lived near and ridden bikes around Circle C for fifteen years but never stepped foot in ATX bikes until last Friday when a derailleur cable broke. The new owner as of Sept16, Frank Prior, greeted me as I walked in the door and asked if he could help. Told him my problem and he grabbed a couple cables. $10 and said they were pretty backed up but could probably get to it the next day if I needed any help with the installation. I was glad to hear they were that busy because it's great to have a shop right here in the neighborhood that is equal parts road, mountain and casual bikes. I also mentioned my bike was turning ten years old this month and that I might be interested in a new bike soon. Frank asked if he could show me something...and we walked back into the fitting area. High tech software and a GURU fitting machine all designed to breakdown bike fit based on your goals and riding style. Frank invited me back the next week before regular operating hours and offered to evaluate my riding position on current bike. Over a few hours from 8-10a, Frank broke down issues in my current bike and how I am positioned on it. I have long legs and we discovered my foot and knee angle were not optimal, in addition to hip bend and many others. We then took a look at newer road bike options based on my style of riding and goals. Frank went through changes in frames / components and many others since my last bike purchase. We found a few options and he plugged in the geometry into the Guru system...minutes later I was riding a setup identical to the bike he recommended so we could evaluate the riding posture. My new Giant Defy Advanced Pro 1 will be here next week. Frank and ATX Bikes didn't sell or persuade me into a new bike...they earned my business and support. It's great to have a genuine, kind-hearted small business owner right here in Circle C. Highly recommend for any cycling needs. 11/23/16 update - my new bike came in on Monday afternoon and I picked it up Tuesday evening after hours. Frank took the time to walk me through everything I needed to know and make sure I was ready for my first ride. Took it out this morning and WOW was I surprised. I was actually expecting to be a little disappointed as I really like my old bike I've been riding for ten years. New one blew me away at how smooth and stiff it is. Can't wait to ride it more! read more

I had an issue with my derailleur. The guys fixed the issue promptly at a very reasonable price even though I did not buy the bike there. The next day I took my wife down for a bike fit on a very old bike. They did not try to sell me a new bike, set up the bike very nicely for my wife and again did all of this for an extremely reasonable price. They took the time to explain things and my wife was very happy. Highly recommend them. read more
