The short version is: Even for a budget hotel, it's not worth it. There are better options nearby for not much more. The longer version is: Aside from the fact that the walls are paper-thin and you can hear everything including normal conversation of your neighbors, the night we stayed here another guest was very super drunk and very loud -- yelling, slamming doors, stomping past our room, and generally making it impossible to sleep even with earplugs and music playing, starting around 10pm. I called the after hours number to let someone know, but it wasn't resolved until 3am. We had to get up early, so got about 3 hours of sleep that night. When I asked for a refund--and I would have accepted any sort of token that the hotel was sorry, like, say, a discount on a future stay, a gift card for a local business, SOMETHING to acknowledge that it was a really crappy night's stay and they were sorry that they hadn't managed to handle the situation in a more timely way--the manager instead basically said: it's a cheap hotel, so what did I expect? Looking at other reviews, I see that domestic disputes and other such loud and disruptive drunkeness is not actually a one-off occasion but something that others have complained about as well. So, yeah, I guess it's a cheap hotel; what did I expect? Take your business elsewhere if you want the establishment to take care of any issues in a timely manner, OR treat you like a human. (I haven't mentioned anything else, like the "continental breakfast" is packets of oatmeal and water that takes a million years to heat, or the fact that you hear traffic from the freeway all night, or the surfaces of the desks and tables in our room were sticky and gross. Even for a budget hotel, it's not worth it. You will be happy you went elsewhere.) read more

Paper thin walls. You can hear everything your neighbors are doing. For instance, it's 3 am. My neighbors just got home. They are watching the TV show Cops. One of the two guys next door is explaining public intoxication laws in different states. The woman next door is saying the "f" word every other word. They don't understand how loud they are being, I don't think they know how thin the walls are. Anyway, I guess I'll get up. I have a flight to catch at 11 am. Other than the thin walls, the rooms are clean and nice. The front office is only staffed from 8 am to 10 pm. The staff is really nice. I'm going to be so damn tired today. read more

We stayed at the Atomic for one night, as we were on a road trip and only in Astoria for a night. Prior to this, we stayed with friends for 3 days in Pacific City, Or, at their beautiful home. We told them we were staying at Motel 6 in Astoria, and they recommended the Atomic Motel, as it was recently bought and remodeled in a "mid-century motif." So we canceled the Motel 6 and booked a room at the Atomic, for an additional $75 including pet fees not charged at Motel 6. Probably one of the cheapest "remodels" I have ever seen. In Real Estate terms, they simply put "lipstick on the pig". The staff was very friendly, and they included a minimal breakfast that, unfortunately, was not available until 9 am. Most travelers are on the road much earlier than that. We certainly were. A suggestion is that most motels that offer "breakfast" do so between 6 am and 10 am. For the difference in price, Motel 6 is just down the road, and no pet fees. read more

Good value. Inexpensive place that's not far out of the way. Easy walk to all the best spots in Astoria. Clean and felt safe. Had a extra pillows, TV, box fan, microwave, and a refrigerator. The continental breakfast was just old donuts. They have boxes of them sitting out days in advance. Gross, but there are other food options nearby. Also, street noise was loud and woke me up even though I'm not a light sleeper. Just a heads up for others to bring earplugs. read more

Worst motel. The place is very ghetto, in the room you can hear literally everybody 4-5 rooms away. Everything was dirty, the bathroom was filthy! the paint in the entire room was done so badly. And all of the "atomic" decorations were so cheap and fake looking. And the mattress was by far the worst mattress I have ever laid on. Everything was so outrageously bad we only stayed for about 10-15 minutes before finding a different hotel. My fiancé and I were told by the receptionist that she would try and get a refund but she never did, instead she put that she checked us out the next day! We didn't even stay the night there but she put that we did. Do not waste your time and money on this place. read more

The room was nice other then the odor, which seemed a bit off -- like it had been a day or two without fresh air. The breakfast we skipped because it was motel-mediocre (muffins, donuts). The problem we had was arriving back after 10 pm (when the front desk was closed) and finding zero parking spots. We thought about calling the "emergency" line but instead parked around the block since the next day was Sunday so the 1-h parking restriction would not apply. However, this whole situation is not ideal when you're traveling and don't know the area and, well, paid for a room that should have included parking! Add with carrying bags, it's even more frustrating. Upon checkout, I told the person at the front desk about the lack of parking. She said it was typical that they ran out of parking but that overflow went to the diner next door -- but no one told us! We got an unenthused apology before the clerk's eyes were drawn back to whatever she was watching on TV. Bottom line: Include this info in the ad or an in-room book if you're not going to tell folks without fail upon check-in. And make sure you have a "loading" spot so they can at the very least unload their bags without walking 2-3 blocks. read more

Ok, so this hotel was totally cute. They have great decor and a ridiculously friendly staff. The room was spacious if basic, and the beds were comfortable. Everything seemed clean. The price was right. The wifi worked well and so did the refrigerator in our room. And they have actual keys for the doors. Not cards with a strip. ACTUAL. KEYS. Neat. On the other side, they allow smoking in a corner of the parking lot, so you're going to get some whiffs of that, and at least one time there was someone out smoking on the balcony even though it wasn't allowed. The walls were rather thin and our neighbors were up screaming at each other about whether or not they were alcoholics well past midnight. And since the front desk closes, there is no one to call to come fix the situation. The pastries available in the morning did not look entirely edible. read more

While the motel itself is fine. It's nothing special. Having stayed at a couple converted motels it's in mone with that brand. But this review comes after a pretty awful sleeping experience in which had a room party in one side and a very vocal partners on the others it honestly felt like being in the college dorms again. While little can be fine to sound proof these old walls... at the very least an attentive manager would have been nice to nil the party in the bud. I cannot recommend this place, nor will I return. If you're looking for a fun, comfortable, and kitchy spot in Astoria, look no farther! Awesome new owners have updated an old highway motel with some kitschy vintage repo furnishings and art. They're fun loving and provide snacks upon check in and throughout the day. Parking is free, but kind of limited. Be sure to park and then take advantage of the trolly which picks up across the street. It's a little on the outskirts of the main drag, but easily walkable and safe. It's right next to a yummy breakfast spot too! Very comfortable bed and pillows. The TV had lots of local channels and the room was quiet. read more

The only reason I gave one star is it's the only way to leave a review. The info on this property is surely done by family or even some company paid to raise their stars. This is the worst place I have ever stayed. The bathroom was a horror. The shower fixtures were rusted and pieces missing. They painted over rotted wood and drywall, no grab bars or tub mats. They advertised breakfast, but the lobby is not open until 9:00am. Most of us travelers were already gone. The neighborhood was sketchy at best. Weird people on the street. My worst fears of dirty beds could have been realized. It was a dirty, scary place. There was a sign on the lobby door that said " don't park under the awning ". When I looked up, I could see why. I'm sure it is not safe. Just a run down old motel, that they have falsified the reviews. AND they charged us over $200 for one night! We took a trip to Astoria and thought it would be fun to stay in a unique motel. Unfortunately, we had a pretty disappointing experience. First, it was pretty dirty. We brought our pups and 2 minutes into being in the room we found our dog was eating something off the floor. It turned out to be dog food that hadn't been vacuumed up from the last person who stayed there. Overall, the floors were pretty dirty. Second, we asked for a room with 2 beds, which usually means at least 2 queen beds. We got a queen bed and a very small twin. The bedding was thin, and the beds creaked terribly. They also advertise breakfast, which is a joke. They dont even open their lobby until 8:30 a.m. so, if you wake up earlier, you have to go somewhere else for coffee or tea. We got in the lobby at 8:45, and the 9 muffins I'd seen through the window were all gone. I asked the front office attendant, and they said they were all out....so they only offer 9 muffins. This also applied to fruit. There was 1 banana and a few apples when we got in, and the attendant also stated they had no more fruit. The only other item they had was oatmeal packets- the super sugary ones. Our kids ended up eating the only oatmeal packets with hot water. No juice or anything else to go with it. Overall, it was a pretty bad experience. If you love bacon, they have posters on the wall declaring how delicious it is (thats the room art). They dont have cots if you have a kid who needs one. There's no in room coffee maker or really anything else to make your stay more comfortable. We love Astoria and go to the coast regularly. We will never stay at this motel again. We definitely feel like they advertised things they DO NOT have (like a clean room or breakfast). read more

This is my go-to place when I visit Astoria. Cute decor, good price, good location. I love that there is a little fridge and microwave in the room. I usually stay for a week so it's good to grab a few little groceries because you can only eat out so many times and Astoria isn't really an inexpensive place. This is a cute retro motel. It is 5 stars for what it is--cute, retro, clean, and fairly priced. A friend and I had a 3 night Staycation here. We had rooms next to each other and social distanced. Yes, this was during during the Covid pandemic. Each room has a mini refrigerator and a small microwave. We brought food & beverages. We were able to sit outside and enjoy our meals. While sitting outside, we had a fantastic view of the Megler Bridge over the Columbia River. The river walk is across the street. We enjoyed walking all around town and getting about 14,000 steps. I was born and raised in the Astoria area and knew the Atomic Motel before it was Atomic motel. I never stayed there because I never needed to. We have since moved to Arizona and our two sons wanted to return and visit former school friends. We made reservations for our two sons to stay there while they visited for several days. I spoke directly to a gentlemen at the front desk and explained what the situation was and purpose and made the reservation and paid. They flew from Arizona, picked up a rental car in PDX and drove to Astoria. When they went to check in there was no one there, no one at the front desk at 2pm. I called and finally got an answering service that said "She's out running errands and will be back at 3pm" so they waited. When she finally showed up she denied them saying because my oldest son was not 21 he could stay. She said it was Oregon law. Turns out it is not Oregon law and simply their policy. However, it says nothing of this on their booking site (apparently it does on third party sites) and the person at the front desk when I called said nothing about it either. I had hoped to give them a little business. I've hardly ever seen but one or two cars in their parking lot if any. We successfully made other arrangements for them at another hotel. What kind of hotel has very limited hours for someone manning the front desk and even then leaves their post to "run errands" leaving the office closed??? In the middle of the night I guess you're on your own if there's anything wrong. The decor might be kitsch, but that's all there is. Beyond kitsch you can't rely on much more. I suppose it stands to reason if no one stays there you can't have staff manning the front desk for more than a couple hours a day. When I was young I think it was called the Lamp Lighter Motel and they did pretty well, a convenient place with the Pig-n-Pancake sharing the same parking. Now they're theme hotel and that's where it ends. Forget service, it's just cheap. I don't recommend staying here unless decor is all you are looking for. That's just my 2¢. read more

I love Astoria! One of my favorite towns to visit. My late father lived there for several years, so it's a special place to me. I've been to Astoria numerous times, and stayed at many of the hotels/motels in the area... this was my first time at the Atomic Motel, but it won't be my last!! Previously the Lamplighter, someone must have bought this place and fully redone it. Super cool vibe - retro, kitschy. The room was clean. A lot cleaner than some more expensive hotels I've stayed at. For the price, you can't go wrong. read more

We were the only people in sight, she wasn't on the phone, and I doubt she could have been more disinterested or less helpful when asked a few simple questions (ex: do you have pet friendly rooms, can we see a room before we book it). Not the worst place I've stayed in my life but hard to recommend it. Would be easier if the price had been reasonable, but it was around $160 per night at the end of September, hardly tourist season. It's an old motor lodge that I normally wouldn't have chosen, but it was close to a wedding venue and I'm drawn to Atomic age kitsch. This was a poor, extremely superficial attempt at that. Cheap, thin bedding. Curtains that didn't work, a tiny TV and -- my wife made sure I included the worst part -- no outlet in the sink area outside the toilet/shower. So I had to make a run to Safeway to get an extension cord so she could dry her hair. Also, the lights over the sink and in the toilet/shower area were controlled by the same switch. So late night trips to the toilet had to either be conducted blindly or by shining a bright light on the bed. Then there was the missing bulb in the bathroom light fixture...which should have been detected by housekeeping. Others have noted the weak continental breakfast situation, which is true, but we weren't there for breakfast. The room seemed clean enough, but definitely smelled of the pets they allow to stay there. All of this would have been easier to accept had the room cost what it should have. For $72 (including tax), I had one of the best motel experiences of my life. I've been less satisfied with my experience at hotels that run 5x this much. From the very beginning, service is excellent. They served free dinner, offered me a drink, and that was before I even made it to my room! The room was clean, nice, and aesthetically-pleasing. Rooms: descent sized rooms with comfortable, though squeaky, bed. There is a microwave and mini-fridge. Bathroom shower head was extremely low, but who doesn't like a challenge? The decor was adorable and I was comfortable with the room temperature. One downside was there were several bugs in the room (mosquito eaters). Service: amazing! The staff were kind and thoughtful. Safety: I do wish the doors had deadbolts, particularly on the first floor. There are handle locks and chains. Price: wonderful for the area. I've stayed in several hotels in Astoria and was impressed by the price of $77 (including tax). Parking: there simply isn't enough parking, park before 7pm if possible. read more

Right on both counts and very friendly service by both owners and lucky to get the last two rooms. Loved the lobby, ( needs a milkshake machine!) and the deck in the lot. We stayed at the Atomic motel for only one night. It was a fine lil' place to stay. Room was clean. Beds were comfortable. No ironing board/ iron, but we were able to get one from the office. No air conditioner and no blow dryer. The staff in the Lobby were very friendly. Next door to the hotel is the visitor center, which gave us lots of information. We probably would stay here again, but not if we were visiting for longer than one or two days. The town does shut down early, so be aware. read more

Unfortunately this motel was a great disappointment (room 111): 1. Overpriced - we paid a total of $476.82 for two nights (you read that correctly) for a queen room with no air conditioning; a tiny bathroom that had not been updated and had no fan; lots of highway noise; and no noise-proofing so that we could easily hear our neighbors above and to the side and outside; and minimal breakfast (wouldn't even call it continental breakfast). There were no discounts offered (AAA, AARP, Senior, Military, etc.). 2. While the motel is indeed cute and has been decorated by someone with a good eye, the rooms have not been updated other than superficially and are NOT as represented on the web site. In our unit whoever did it seemed to have run out of energy when they got to the bathroom, where the paint and wood trim were sloppy and the shower didn't work correctly (half the water came out of the shower head, and half out of the spigot). 3. Lack of air conditioning or in-window fan is a real problem and would be worse earlier in the summer or any time with higher temps. We did get a standing fan from the helpful desk clerk (it was the one for the office, as there wasn't one in the room although there should have been one), which was a life-saver. Opening the window made it too noisy to sleep, as the motel is right on a busy highway. Thankfully it was not too hot, because a fan alone would not have been enough. 4. The rooms lack even a basic but standard amenity - a coffee maker! Two positives: the bed was comfortable and the front desk staff person was very nice. I would not recommend this motel to anyone. I've written to the motel, included a copy of this review, and requested a partial refund, and woud be very pleasantly surprised to receive either a response or a refund. read more

My husband I just happened upon this motel on our trip through out the Pacific Northwest. The sign says We're fun! and it is from the moment you enter the lobby to when you walk in your room. I'm a huge fan of motor lodges from the 50s and 60s, and there are three along Marine Drive in Astoria. I had stayed at a different one two years ago, and this past weekend was a great opportunity to visit the Atomic Motel! Online reservations were simple. Check-in was a breeze. The room was clean and well-appointed, with abundant amenities. We had no problem or issue with noise, or individuals in the parking lot, or nasty staff. The continental breakfast is sort of meh. Pastries are dry and insipid. Coffee was weak (but fortunately, I always bring a coffee pot on road trips, so we had good coffee in our room). I have to say that I absolutely love the placards in the room and the lobby with amusing statements. They definitely put me in a good mood to explore Astoria and the surrounding area! Based on price, quality, and convenient location, I will definitely return to the Atomic Motel! read more
