Friday 8/31 at around 7 pm I went to the counter to order my coffee like I normally do. The couple in front of us ordered their coffee with a polite and pleasant attitude from the cashier, however when I went to order and asked what ingredients were in some of the cold brew options, I was spoken to with a condescending and rude tone. He spoke quickly and at a low volume, and lacked any sense of wanting to help. My sister ordered her drink and when I asked for light ice, he disregarded my request and pretended to acknowledge me so that I would continue with my order. I then ordered my drink with light ice, and again he shrugged and did nothing on the register as before. Knowing that he didn't make any notion of putting in light ice for our order, I stayed next to the counter to make sure my order was followed. As expected, my drink was made filled to the brim with ice but the most frustrating part was the fact that the cashier I ordered from was watching my drink being made wrong, and looked up at me to see if I was watching. So I interrupted the woman who was making my drink and reminded her I asked for light ice, so she gladly fixed my order. What upset me even more was the cashier watching me interrupt her, KNOWING that I had ordered light ice and intentionally letting her make it wrong. And even worse, rudely staring at me as if he was looking down on me. Truly, I could care less about having ice or someone explaining drink descriptions on the menu. It's a first world problem. What matters to me is the change in attitude I witnessed from the Caucasian people ordering in front of me, to my sister and I (who are brown). I genuinely felt as if he didn't want to give me light ice because of whatever stereotypes he thinks of me. It's not right and it has completely changed my outlook on atomic coffee. I no longer feel comfortable studying here or giving my business to this establishment. If you have poor customer service skills, that's one issue. But to clearly change your attitude between races in unacceptable. read more

Definitely my favorite study spot in Royal Oak. The lavender latte is delicious, very mildly sweet and very frothy. The syrups are made in house so they're very tasty. I also got a vegan Apple muffin and it was good. The flavored lattes are like $5 and my muffin was about $3. So it's comparably priced to other places. Also if you get an in house mug of regular coffee ($2ish) you get a free refill. The lighting, music, and seating areas are perfect for studying or meeting up with a friend. Sometimes it's really busy during the day and impossible to get a seat, in which case I head to goldfish tea down the street. It can also get pretty noisy when it's busy. But the hours are perfect for study sessions and all the staff is very friendly and helpful. I've asked questions about products on a couple occasions and everyone's been very open to explaining without being judge-y. Definitely a fun spot overall. read more

One of my favorite study spots. Their lattes are delicious and ever changing, soups, sandwiches and salads are also always great. Pastries are also quite decent. Prices are on the higher side which prevents me from going more often than I would, being a broke, starving student and all.... It does tend to get a bit crowded so I would recommend going earlier to nab a table. I came across atomic coffee shop and decided this will be my new place to study after school and work. I love the atmosphere. When I study I like to have positive energy around me and this place has a ton of it. The windows have a big impact on the way I study And I don't feel claustrophobic at all. The coffee here is pretty good, however if you care at all about the environment and the footprint that your dollar is leaving then skip this place. When asking for a spoon you will get a whole plastic bag filled with a plastic knife fork and spoon. Your ice latte will be served in a plastic solo cup with a non recyclable orange plastic straw, and all food is served in plastic containers. They don't even have a receptacle for recycling all the plastic trash that they are serving. As an owner, you can offer plant based biodegradable utensils, cup, lids, and Togo containers. It's located where the old Caribou Coffee was on Main St. The spaces was empty for so long, I was so glad when this place finally opened, and now it's one of my favorite coffee shops in Michigan. My go-to place to work remotely! Since Atomic Coffee opened, it's become my favorite coffee stop in Royal Oak. Both the Lavendar Latte and Mexican Mocha are well-worth $5, especially if you sit down and enjoy them in a cup instead of a to-go mug. :) The staff is friendly; there are three different areas to sit, and lots of outlets, which is really good for anyone who needs to charge up their phones or sit with their laptops for a while. For longer visits, they have food and smoothies and baked goods (like pan au chocolate, almond croissants!!) which helps me justify staying a bit longer to finish up an email or read an article. I recently had to limit my coffee due to pregnancy so their green tea has been a great replacement. I have to say I was skeptical of this place when I first saw it. Royal Oak has changed a lot over the years. Gone are my high school days of loitering at Caribou Coffee in Royal Oak and wandering around town and going to clothing boutiques and record stores... It's mostly bars and restaurants now! I first came to Atomic on a warm October day, where I brought my puppy for a stroll downtown. I was really craving something to eat but I couldn't really leave the little guy outside. I noticed Atomic Coffee and saw they had a nice patio. I approached the girl who was cleaning and asked her if there was any way I could order from her and get the food brought out to me. She was extremely accommodating and helped me out. It was nice that I could eat outside with the puppy and not have to leave him tied to a post somewhere. I got a turkey sandwich which was awesome. Since then I have frequented this place a few more times (sans puppy) and I love the vibe. The baristas are always extremely friendly and always describe menu items and give recommendations without acting pretentious. It's a great place to go on a date, or meet a friend and talk for hours, or even study. I hope this coffee shop is here for many more years to come! read more

To the drinks...... we were very disappointed in the ones we had. First they do not carry decaf espresso so I couldn't get a cappuccino, to late for caffeinated. So I went with plain decaf coffee. It was not at all good! Very very weak! Some of us have to have decaf and it needs to still be flavorful and strong. This tasted very watery. May come back and try something else as they seem to have a lot of baked goods and other drinks. I hope they improve their decaf though!! read more

Sleek and cool - fresh and crisp - this place ROCKS !!! I try to come up with every excuse to go here. I've set up meetings on their outdoor patio with clients, they're from Miami and LOVE it. It is extremely hip and trendy - but here to stay for sure. The Nitro Cold Brew is incredible, there is not jolt from caffeine greater than this option. Conveniently located right in downtown Royal Oak. If you aren't on foot, you would probably be able to grab street parking. It is on the higher end for price, but honestly the craft and love that goes into the drinks makes it seem A-Okay. They know what they are doing here and it is evident, if you truly are a coffee snob, this is your spot. This is one of the best places in the metro area to take a laptop and get sh*t done. Plenty of outlets and USB ports. I've been here dozens of times. Good breakfast sandwiches, soups, and strong coffee. The space has a lot of white tile and has a modern, minimalist look. Huge windows in the front that can fully open, which is really nice when the weather is warm. The atmosphere may not be what I'm looking for in a coffeehouse, but it does mirror the changes that have come to Royal Oak in recent years, and offers a pleasant/modern feel while sipping coffee or a fruit concoction! There are multiple rooms, and each has a unique vantage - it's appropriate that there is a section for high schoolers/college kids to study, and others that lend more to socializing. Although I have yet to try the coffee, I am impressed that the smoothies are made from fresh fruit, and not a powder. What is most important to me in judging the success of a business is by the owner and staff's ability to please customers, which far exceeded my expectations for a cafe! This relaxed laid back mostly coffee shop has many exotic coffees, also smoothies, fresh juices, and breakfast. I was very impressed with the setting and how on a really nice day I could just stay in the restaurant all day. They open the windows to the street and the fresh air just pours in. They also have an outdoor section if you just want to be outside. I had the Berry Brotein it was very flavorful the fruit was fresh with the smoothie had a great consistency not to thin. While I still enjoy Atomic coffee very much, the quality of Latte varies wildly from Barista to Barista. Sometimes the cup is filled to almost the top, sometimes it's only about half full with 60% foam. No one expects that much foam upon ordering a Latte. I fully expected snobby baristas (judgemental mistake on my part) but the girl who helped me was quite nice and helpful. $5 i think or around there for my lavender latte. Too expensive i think but hey that's the price to pay for some instagram worthy latte art i guess. My biggest problem was that my latte was cold and i could barely taste the lavender.
