Alright, I've been back to Atomic a few times now and have confirmed in my own mind that all of what I said before remains true--it's a great spot. However, coming for breakfast tipped the scale toward 5 stars: the breakfast sandwich was next-level and the Saturday ambiance was lively but not overwhelming. Also, I picked up a pound of their whole-bean coffee (which is freshly roasted, it just might take a few minutes to discover which bags are freshest) and it's been excellent. So unless something opens up to compete (seems unlikely), this is my new go-to spot. read more

I was running late for a meeting and driving a car without A/C, so I spent only a few minutes here, and had the iced coffee. It was brewed perfectly -- not a common find. I give it high marks for serving fair-trade and organic coffee, but this cafe has quite a few other things to recommend it. First is the roaster right in the front window. Second is the free wi-fi, with clearly-stated expectations about its use. Third is the ample seating -- booths and tables and a counter with stools. And of course, friendly people behind the counter! This was my first visit to the center of Beverly, and I will have to go back when I have time to walk around. It seems to have plenty of good eateries and shops -- what a downtown should be. The parking reminds me of an old Garrison Keillor joke: every space on Cabot Street has a meter, but the side streets are free. read more

Love this place, I don't think I've ever actually had a bad meal. The hot chocolate is amazing and most of the baristas do latte art on them (bonus!) the wraps salads and grilled cheeses are what I mostly reccomend because they seem to be the best out of the menu as well as their coffee cake. The coffee is quite impressive, perhaps the best in all of downtown Beverly between St Mary's and the Beverly Public Library. It's just a shame that I didn't pursue my graduate degree in comparative lit or I'd have more time to sit and enjoy a cup while working on my thesis. I've heard about this place and how great it is from a few different people and decided to go there with my sister. We like grabbing food at little cafes like this when he hang out because they're usually moderately priced and have good food. I was honestly expecting something much better, and my expectations are not high. It's an alright place, really nothing special. I feel like the decor is kind of gross they would probably attract more customers if the place was more welcoming and looked cleaner. The drinks we got were actually really good. The food was okay nothing special. They menu is really weird, its almost like they're trying to have the gourmet cafe menu but don't know how to put together that kind of dish. Needing a hot drink the Friday after Thanksgiving, we dropped into the Atomic Cafe and just smiled as we entered and smelled the roast coffee. The group did Mochas, a Latte and a black Dark Roast. I went with my oldest here for dinner after a doctor's appointment. It looks cute from the outside but inside it's kind of dirty and rundown. A sign in their restaurant proclaims that they're the 'friendliest restaurant in town'. Uh...I would have to disagree with that. When we sat down, they pretty much ignored us, and when I went to the coffee bar to say 'Excuse me, sir, can we order something from the menu?' the young man continued chatting on his cellphone and did not acknowledge my existence until he hung up several minutes later. It's not what I would call friendly service. I had the Honey Ham Delight sandwich with iced coffee. They iced coffee was okay (though rather small) and the ham sandwich would have been good, except for the mustard they put on it which was completely gross--it tasted like battery acid. I ended up using my knife to scrape it off and that improved it quite a bit. My daughter had the spring mix salad with raspberry smoothie to drink and she loved both of them. For dessert we had a key lime pie brownie which was awesome and nearly made up for my sandwich. Still, it was a struggle to get staff's attention (one was just sitting there staring into space, the other two were in the back room chatting). It took me ten minutes of waving my hands and saying 'excuse me' to get their attention. For a relatively small meal, (sandwiches, drinks and a small dessert) it was over 20 dollars, which is way overpriced in my opinion. The cafe was extremely loud, which I don't particularly like, but I did like the 50's decor (even though it was very rundown) and the art work on the walls, each which came complete with a funny story explaining the picture, so it wasn't a total fail. This is a solid 3 Star place. The waitstaff is more angry that your bothering them than taking your order. And the prices are too high for what you get. Lots of angry women servers, even the guys act like old ladies. That being said, they have a few sandwiches that are good. Chicken salad, and their breakfasts are ok. I should note that, for me, this is generally positive quality to have in a coffee shop/cafe. I love this place. The coffee (most of which they roast themselves off-site I believe) is delicious, which is the main reason I come. Lots of good variety - definitely try the Guatemala and also the Pumpkin Spice blend, if it's in season. Definitely a cool, very basic atmosphere inside with several small tables and a bar area. A little on the small and crowded side, but I've never had problems finding a place to plant myself. They also have some outdoor seating if the weather's nice and you want to take in the Cabot St surroundings. So what marks Atomic as a hipster haven? Tattoos, ironic facial hair, experimental indie rock and fashion mullets. And these are the things I love to see around a good coffee shop. read more

Rude Service Average Coffee. Was waiting at the counter when Barista told me he would be right with me. A few minutes later order taker returns and asks another couple what they want. We both stated I was next. Although I was standing less than 3 ft from the other couple, instead of asking me what I want I got a lecture about next time I need to be standing in a spot 2' from where I was standing. Crowded, expensive and overrated. They always burn their coffee, and it sits in canisters all day and gets acidic and bitter. I like the art on the walls, and it's a decent place to grab lunch, as they have more seating than other coffee shops in the area. I don't quite understand the caché value of this place. 5 stars for a coffee shop? Yes, friends. You saw this correctly. Dunkins keeps you going for a good hour. Starbucks gives you a nice kick in the ass and has you running through your day. But Atomic Cafe... I swear, I think I got high after finishing this coffee. It was so strong and yet so delicious. Not overly bitter as you would expect from a strong cup of coffee, but you can definitely tell this isn't a cup of wussy Honey Dew Donuts coffee either. I {can't} absolutely guarantee you'll be singing "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" after your second cup (free refills) as you try to walk down the streets of Beverly. I don't know about you guys, but I need a pot of coffee to make it through my day. This place condenses a pot to a cup, while providing me with lucid hallucinations. Bravo, AC! The coffee is quite good, as is the vibe. But, they don't have allot of vegan options. Just a pretty basic hummus sandwich. Also they don't keep plant milk out for coffee. It's 2018!! That option should be as standard as whole or skim milk, not something you need to ask for. read more

Have you ever woke up one morning and decided you really just didn't feel like committing to a 6 hour work day? That you'd much rather just wander around aimlessly enjoying the sunshine we finally get? That was certainly the day I was having when I first experienced Atomic. My fella and I wanted to find a little coffee shop where we could just grab a small bite to eat and go about our merry way. My first impression of this place wasn't a very good one. A bunch of trendy hipsters were sitting outside giving me the once over before I even got within 10 feet of the door. I didn't really expect that in Beverly, so I was a little put off. Walking inside the place looked a little disheveled, and unorganized. I grabbed a seat next to the window and proceeded to stare back at the hipsters while my fella ordered me an iced coffee and a turkey panini for himself. This is where things get messy. Right off the bat while trying to steal a bite of his sandwich I knocked over my coffee and spilled more than half of it all over the table and the windowsill. As my face turned red, I started chuckling to myself and shaking my head. Definitely a me move. The employees just kind of shook their head and smiled at me while we cleaned it all up. Surprisingly being really friendly. Once the whole mess was cleaned up, and I had a bite of his sandwich, I was pretty impressed with how fresh and tasty it was. Even my humiliation didn't ruin the taste. The girl behind the counter when asked for a new straw for my iced coffee filled up the missing portion, you know the bit that was all over the floor, and was really quite friendly. A place definitely gets my vote when good customer service is involved. Overall, I wouldn't mind going back here for a light lunch. But I can definitely say I wasn't too disappointed the coffee landed on the floor and not in my tummy. It wasn't that great. read more

I'm not really feeling the Atomic cafe like everyone else seems to be! Went here for lunch today with Hubs. Got 2 bowls of hungarian mushroom soup ($5.25 each). Hubs got the chicken cordon bleu sandwich ($6.50) and I got the hummus sandwich ($5) and we got 2 "for here" coffees. Total bill was $28 which seemed kind of steep for what we got. My sandwich was small and not very satisfying- 2 small slices of multi grain store bought bread with a thin slathering of hummus, a slice of cheese, sprouts and tomato. I have made much better at home. Hubs' sandwich looked like a plain- made-at-home turkey and ham sandwich. Only had the choice of chips for a side, and I skipped them. Coffee was self-serve. At first glance there seemed to be a good variety of coffees (maybe 6 or 7) to choose from, but 3 of the carafes were empty (including the pumpkin one which I was hoping to try). I settled on the Colombian and it was a little bitter for me. The place was packed (due to a parade that was apparently about to start) and was crawling with kids. Limited seating. Kind of dingy. I found the drip coffee at Atomic to be pretty mediocre, especially for a place that seems to try to present itself as a high-quality, local coffeehouse. (Though Atomic Cafe seems to be having an identity crisis since it was giving off the "diner" vibes, too.) Also, my oatmeal was a little overpriced, in my opinion. Why do places have to make it so difficult to make the healthy choice?! This is a fantastic coffee shop! I'm a big fan of the "chai charger," chai tea latte with a shot of espresso, but the regular brewed coffee is also terrific. The sandwich menu has many tasty options, I can personally recommend the turkey and the grilled cheese. The place has a great community vibe as it's frequented by students, stay-at-home parents with kids, and commuters depending on the time of day. I've spent lots of time hanging out and reading a book, and so far as I can tell, it's never slow. Atomic is definitely one of the best hang-outs in Beverly, and an asset to the community. read more

I love the Atomic! I used to hang there years ago and now that my wife and i have moved to Beverly I plan on becoming a regular again! Now they even roast their own coffee! The dark roast is called diesel and will definitely put a little lead in your pencil! The sandwiches are fantastic, (turkey cordon bleu is my favorite). The Atomic is my home away from home. The fact that they make delicious espresso drinks is no accident. The staff is warm, enthusiastic, and hip. I was an art student in Beverly long ago, and as a student in Beverly, you had many food options. Atomic Cafe is one of the best. Atomic caters to carnivores and veggies alike, with sandwiches, smoothies, juices and sometimes soup. They are always making the food to order, so be prepared to hang out for a bit. It can be packed during lunch times, and it should be. The place itself is cute, small and supremely hipster. I love it. You can sit in a booth, at the counter or by the windows, and even outside! I came to atomic with some Mum friends and 4 babies in tow. I had never been here before and was pleasantly surprised we could fit our strollers inside. This was huge as it allowed us to sit and have lunch without waking any of our babies. For lunch I had the turkey BLT, and it was amazing. The turkey was great, yummy bacon, and excellent bread. The salads and other sandwiches looked great as well, everyone else loved theirs as well. I had a Café au lait and it was solid but could have been hotter as it got cold very fast drinking it in house. We split a peanut butter cookie which tasted great but was a little drier than I personally like. The staff was incredible and did not seem annoyed we came in with kids. What an adorable coffee shop! I visited this past weekend (2/25/2012) and was rather impressed with Atomic Cafe. I ordered a tea (which I know they don't make there) but found it splendid. Good job, AC, for finding a great tea vendor. I gave AC 5 stars solely due to the location and physical layout. Location: Hailing from Cape Cod and living in Boston for the past 6 years, I was super excited and impressed to find an adorable main street with a cute coffee shop landed in the center (maybe this isn't the truth, but this was my perception). Additionally, the beach is a 5 minute walk from the cafe, I bet this place is great for a summer night's date. Physical layout: I love the layout here. I loved sitting up front and people watching (one of my favorite past times). There's also a community board which is awesome. This place feels like a typical, yet exciting, community cafe rather than a cookie cutter Starbucks. Hooray, Atomic Cafe, hooray. read more

We visit Beverly a few times a year and I always try to find a really good cup of drip coffee, and last week tried Atomic for the first time. The coffee was perfectly commendable, but I really don't like the lids they use on the "to go" cups - they are the type that require you to place your lower lip on the side of the lid while sipping, and the heat conducts right through the lid making for a very unpleasant and uncomfortable experience. I actually burned my mouth on the hot coffee (and I love HOT coffee) because I was trying to drink it without letting my lip touch the lid, an impossible task. What saved the day was I had an empty cup and lid from my free hotel coffee in the car and the free lid fit the Atomic Cafe cup. I sometimes wonder if people who serve these lids actually ever use them. The flat lids with the pull up tabs are infinitely superior in drinkability. read more

Moved to Beverly just a few months ago and I am so thrilled to have found my coffee spot!! The mocha chai charger is the best coffee drink I have ever had. I finally had the pleasure of having it in one or their oversized cappucino mugs (rather than to-go) and it was heavenly and a work of art! My 2 year old loves their smoothies and scones. The Pesto and Goat Cheese on ciabatta bread is absolutely delicious. So much flavor, it knocks my socks off every time. Very friendly baristas. I love this place! read more

This afternoon around 2 p.m. I was at Atomic Cafe grabbing a coffee. It was pouring out. As I stood there in line getting a coffee, I witnessed a cashier as well as a manager verbally assault four paying customers. Never in my life have I been so mortified. Four ladies were having lunch enjoying their coffees and cupcakes. I noticed all of them had food from Atomic Cafe and it appeared that two of them had food from another restaurant up the street. The manager came out and basically said they should not be eating food from another restaurant at Atomic Cafe. I could clearly see all women had coffees in front of them as well as pastries from Atomic Cafe. All of a sudden I noticed that everybody was staring at them. A scene was being created. Next thing you know a cashier comes over to the table and verbal assaults them. I have never seen anything like that in my life! When the ladies got up from the seats to leave I'm sure in a state of embarrassment, the cashier continued to berate them and said "bye losers". Shame on you Atomic Cafe. You've definitely lost a paying customer here. I'm incredibly disappointed in the lack of dignity, respect and compassion for the four women sitting trying to enjoy their coffee and lunch. The situation could have been handled professionally and in such a different manner where you could have gotten your point across in a positive manner. I am sure those four woman will never be back to Atomic Cafe! And nor will I. read more
