So what can I say about Aster Hall, It's all you and wanted and didn't know you needed. I went to Aster Hall after my co-workers brought in some great smelling chicken. It's just across the street so, it made it even better. The prices are moderate considering the food and area that it is in. In my first trip I spent about $40 in good for my family. I ordered Shoyu Ramen with extra five spice, Italian beef, Chicago's style hot dogs, burger from Au cheval. The ramen was pretty good for what it was worth, I would say a solid 6. I've had better at Jinya Ramen and Ramen San. All the other things I ordered were good. When you got to pick up your food, you get them from different vaults. Your receipt shows you what vault to go to. There is a hidden gem at the sweets counter. They have gigantic cookies, slices of cake, and other goodies too. Stop by on your way down the escalator. Usually I avoid eating at food courts at the mall but this place is next level - it's like a food court from the future. Rather than going from stall to stall to order, you can order all the snacks you want from one kiosk. The food comes out pretty fast and there's a wide selection to choose from ranging from small cheval to green street market to al pastor tacos, there is a diverse selection of food to choose from. Being able to get the Au Cheval burger in 4 min rather waiting 4 hours (yes I did wait 4 whole hours for a burger) is a game changer. Note: lunch starts at 11am, options limited during breakfast. In addition to the delicious food available at your fingertips the decor is beautiful. It's actually my new fave place to do work. They have booths with outlets and even a lounge upstairs. I've been here now a few times. Like any new space that opens up, there's a curve to get your feet under you and get a rhythm going. Since they've opened, they've definitely made a lot of improvements as to how to handle the people in line waiting to order, and directing them as to what kiosk to pick up their food. And yes, they have "runners" who can bring it to you. The food is quick to order food, but better than fast food. Which is why you won't see ribs and brisket and things of that nature on the menu. It looks like everything is made fresh here. While I haven't tried everything here, Small Cheval and The Rotisserie are a cant miss, if you like burgers and chicken. Many people don't realize that there are booths and tables upstairs at the bar area, and are left wandering around when the main floor is busy. There is signage directing people upstairs, but it blends in with the new layout and is easily missed - this is really the only real complaint I have. The trash gets full fast with people churning in and out, but they stay on it as much as possible. There is even a couple of stations to wash your hands, which is really convenient. Tables tend to not get cleaned down right away, that's the other small thing I noticed. Yes, they take credit card or debit card only. It's faster, there's no hassle with a register or person handling the money, no danger of a register being robbed, or anything else. It's the most convenient and fastest way to get people in and out to order, one stop shopping. If you're that upset that they don't take cash, then you might be ready to start yelling at people to get off your lawn. read more

This is about the margaritas at the bar made by Amilcar (a gentleman from El Salvador) -- 5 star drink! Fresh lime juice (not that mix crap) with the perfect combination of sweet and sour. He doesn't skim on the tequila and salts the glass perfectly. This is for $13, not a bad price for that part of town. We'll definitely make this a regular stop for margaritas! Aster Hall is a new category of dining. One could call it an upscale foodcourt- but it's so much more than that. All of the ordering is done through kiosks which eliminates the need to tip a waiter. It allows you to mix and match dishes from any of the 16 venders. The interior is very nice and bright with a variety of seating options. There is additional seating upstairs that is a bit more formal. I ordered a cheeseburger from Cheval and added extra pickles. Unfortunately the burger came out without the extra pickles, but it still tasted great. I also tried the Sweet Corn & Poblano from Al Pastor. This is a great spot that is worth checking out whether you're grabbing a quick lunch or meeting up with a friend. Very versatile. read more

This is a great place to hangout during the day. The Food hall is good, no doubt. And the mezzanine is just fantastic. Great atmosphere, a full bar, and not so much people there for now (begin of 2019). I bet this place will be more packed by the future. But right now, I love to go there, just to read a book, having a cappuccino or a glass of wine. I've gone twice now. The first time was in the middle of the lunch rush hour. Had to wait in line to order at kiosk or attendant walking around with a digital pad. I got sushi, truffle fries and a char dog and coke. If you order food from different "vaults" you have to actually walk to that area to pick up your food. Which doesn't sound like a big deal but when it's crowded and many folks orders are in front of you it's a little anxiety inducing. I had never eaten truffle fries before the taste isn't for everyone of truffles. The sushi was average as well as the char dog. The attendants will refill your pop though. The second time I went it was before the lunch rush. Waltzed right to a kiosk ordered my small Cheval double and some fries. Walked over watch them to put the meat on the grill and season the fries. Took my food to go. The second experience is tremendously better. In and Out. Small Cheval has some excellent burger and fries. I'm certainly a fan of the food hall movement in big cities. Aster Hall is a delightful new addition to Brandon Sodikoff's portfolio and I loved visiting the new food hall at 900 N Michigan. Everything is thoughtfully designed with the new tech age in mind. The kiosks are self-serve and intuitive to use and the environment is from a classy great Gatsby gilded age. The variety is huge and it gives sodikoff a place to incubate new ideas with classic hits from Sawada, Small Cheval interspersed with a new taco joint, ramen concept, and fried chicken concept. It's a great experience all around and can't wait to come back. My favorites have been the matcha latte from Sawada/Doughnut vault, the spicy chicken sandwich, Parmesan truffle fries, and nopales taco. The only improvement I can think of is a better way to communicate when your food is ready as opposed to constantly checking the screens at the right vault. I'd love a way to push a text to your phone whenever your food is ready or be able to order through a mobile app. read more

Michigan Avenue is known for the luxury shopping that gave the area the "gold coast" moniker. Yet, when these are your neighborhood stores, sometimes you want a bite to eat when you're out running errands that's not a $100 steak or a $20 cocktail. Enter Aster Hall! While technically a mall food court, it's so much nicer than that. Every element of this establishment works to make you forget it's in a mall at all. First, you can take an "express" elevator straight to the fifth floor to the left of the main entrance of the 900 Michigan Shops on Michigan Ave, bypassing all the escalators needed to get to the fifth floor. Once you arrive at Aster Hall, you'll notice the beautiful marble, gold, and leather decor that's more reminiscent of a gilded age cafe than a mall. It's quiet, light filled, and peaceful. You order at one of the electronic kiosks and pick your food up from one of eight or so "pods" that each serve a different cuisine - from lobster rolls, to tacos, to sushi/poke, to my two favorites- burgers and fries from Small Cheval and some very good ramen. I actually like this location of Small Cheval the best - I find the burger quality the best and most consistent, and the lines are much shorter! The ramen is also solid. Unlike most spots on Michigan Ave, prices are quite reasonable. An entree will cost around $12, and about $3 for a drink (though still and sparkling water are both free). I only wish they had a few more dessert options! read more

The Greens vault is good but just sad they don't heat the salmon, my was raw in the middle and while I love sushi, I either like my salmon completely raw or medium well. Frequently, in between clients, I search for places to eat that are inexpensive and allow me to work at my table for a while. There are few places where I can do this. Today, I found Aster Hall, which is on the 5th and 6th floors of 900 North Michigan Avenue. Aster Hall is self serve where customers order at computer displays and pick their orders up at different kiosks, each specializing in a certain type of food (tacos, stir fry, pizza, ramen, etc). I ordered Kung Pao chicken from Lost Lilys, one of the kiosks. The Kung Pao chicken was tasty, but I have had better. But, for the price and the excellent ambience it is worth it. It was relaxing and enjoyable. The seating area offers different types of seating ranging from table and chairs to booths to couches/chairs and tables with an excellent view of North Michigan Avenue. A coffee/spirits bar flanks the lounge section of Aster Hall. An aspect of Aster Hall appears to be catering to the customer looking to hang out, not be rushed, and not spend a lot of money. Beware though, individually purchased items can entice the diner and lead to a steep bill. Overall, I highly recommend Aster Hall for a off work site and, potentially, and after event coffee place, though I see that it closes at 8:00 pm on weekdays and 6:00 pm on weekends. read more

I like food halls. I like having the convenience of visiting one location but being able to try food from multiple different vendors. A really good food hall can make for a great meal. Personally, I think Aster Hall falls into this category. Now, again, my philosophy when writing these reviews is not to complain about the price of food. A lot goes into these things and anyone who knows anything about this stuff is fully aware that most establishments barely make a profit when you factor in the cost of food, labor and overhead costs. Being located in a mall alongside Bloomingdale's and the Four Seasons can't be cheap. As for the food, ambiance and overall experience, I think Aster Hall has a lot going for it. I sampled food from the taco vendor, Small Cheval, I had a Chicago dog and even tried some sweets from the dessert bar. Everything was good and the standouts were the tacos and the cheeseburgers. The kiosk ordering system was super simple and convenient. There weren't a lot of people when I went which made getting my meal super quick. And the whole place looks really fresh and upscale. All the vendors package items to go and you can pick up to go bags, cutlery and condiments at convenient stations near the vendors. All in all I would definitely say I enjoyed my experience at this food hall. read more

Great atmosphere and selection of food. This food hall is located on the top floors of a shopping mall. Most food options can be ordered at the large screen kiosks. The ordering process was pretty intuitive. After submitting our order, the food was ready within a few minutes. Portions are larger than expected. If you order at the fried chicken place, you can definitely split that with another person, so it's a great deal! I like how they have garlic aioli/mayonnaise available with your normal condiments. Super easy and convenient place for a satisfying meal. Will be coming back soon to try the other food options. read more

We live close by so we are semi-regulars at Aster Hall. With all the restaurant options nearby, this is low on our list for the following reasons: 1) More often than not, tables are dirty and you have to clean one yourself; 2) While there are a number options to choose from, the food is mediocre. Here are my reviews of the food we have tried: - Small Cheval: The Burger was great the first time I tried it but I found the quality to be inconsistent after several visits. - Lily's (Chinese): Orange Chicken & Beef and Broccoli are okay. Vegetable fried rice is way too oily. Overall, higher quality than Panda Express but definitely not as good as the Chinese restaurants around. - Rotisserie Chicken: Both the spicy and the regular fried chicken are good. Not the best I've had but one of the better options at Aster Hall. Overall, I would go again for convenience but I'd probably frequent this place more often if they keep their tables clean. read more

I live very close by so I've tried a lot. The fried chicken was good, the brisket sandwich very disappointing so try the Italian Beef instead. I hope as particularly hungry so I ordered a small Cheval with an extra patty. It came up too fast and it was so dry it was hard to eat/swallow. Don't expect the same great Au Cheval hamburger. The Chicago Style Vienna Hot Dog was fine but I've been to just about every Vienna Hot Dog stand in the the city and the burbs. They actually had the nerve to charge extra for the relish and onions. I work close by, so I have been here at least 20 times... I thought it was fantastic the first couple of weeks, but it has been very inconsistent. I've had the tacos s few times, and ordered them today and they were disgusting. The chicken and beef were just bland shredded meat, and the pork was burnt unedible hard pieces of black horrid pork. This is the fanciest food hall I've ever been to. Which is not completely surprising considering the fancy building it's in, but still, once you take the elevator up to the 5th floor and find the vast two-story dining space, clean white tables and vendor stations, and tantalizing dessert station as the centerpiece. Head upstairs and you'll see even more seating, including a lounge area + bar which rivals those found in many River North hotel lobbies. It's hard to comment on the food here, because you're obviously getting a lot of variation based on the vendor(or 'vault' if you want to be sophisticated). Tried a few different things out here, and most everything ranged from tolerable to good. Small Cheval burger is never a bad choice, Green Street sandwiches are there, and if you can get past the plastic bowls and utensils then the ramen is decent as well. Doughnut vault isn't technically a vendor, but it's the same hospitality group and in the same building, so I consider it a part of Aster Hall as well. I think the best deal was the Nashville Hot Chicken, which was 4 large pieces of chicken(a half chicken basically - thigh, drumstick, breast, wing), impeccably fried, and then covered with a semi-spicy paste. I say semi-spicy because it is no where near as Hot as real Hot chicken, but if you can get past that the flavor is alright. Also the fry is great; a thick coating to match the thick pieces of chicken, so you get both crunch and moist meat in each bite, and remained crispy even hours later when i ate the rest at home. Best of all is, despite the fanciness of many of vendors and the venue itself, the food is fairly affordable with most options coming in at $10 or less. And while being cash-free has it's own limitations, the kiosks are easy and intuitive to use, and let you order a bunch of small things from different vendors so you can mix and match your meal even when dining solo. No more awkwardly walking around to settle down on one place; If you want your lunch to be one taco, a side of waffle fries, and a bowl of clam chowder, you can order it all from one place. Aster Hall has a lot going for it, and can accommodate a few different roles. While it's fast enough for a solo lunch, it's also fancy enough that you can take guests to enjoy the bar and some snacks. You can bring your computer and study here, or you can bring a group of friends and be at peace knowing that you can eat together, but not be forced to eat the same thing(e.g. when everyone else is trying to get a burger but you actually want ramen). Granted, not all the vaults will be of equivalent quality, and the dishes will have many hits and misses, but as a venue itself, Aster Hall is a great addition to River North/Gold Coast, matching the classiness if the Mag Mile while providing a bolus of different affordable food options that the area needs. read more
