We went to Assembly on 11/1/12, so the restaurant is still new and will hopefully improve over time. I don't usually bother to write restaurant reviews, I just won't go back to a place if I don't like it, but I'm thrilled to have a new place in Quincy near my house, so I'm hoping that they do well and stay in business. I was never a fan of Murphy's, but Assembly will be our new "go-to" bar if the food improves.
Ambiance: The decor is fantastic. Very classy and a huge improvement over the standard Quincy establishments. It was packed on a Thursday evening, and we had a short 10 minute wait to get a table. It will be interesting to see if it stays popular after the "newness" wears off.
Service: Our waitress seemed inexperienced, but the bartender/assistant manager assisted as needed. I would give her a 4 out of 10, he gets an 8 out of 10. I think this will improve over time.
Drinks: For drinks we got beers and the "Assembly-tini" ($11) The draft beer was good, with a proper pour. The Assembly-tini should have been better since they named it after themselves. I ordered 3, and each one was made differently, which is not acceptable for an $11 drink.
Food: For the appetizer we got the beef terriyaki sticks ($11, I think). They were fantastic and came on a little bed of rice. It was almost a meal by itself. We loved them and will definitely order them again. I ordered the shrimp scampi ($16) as my meal. It was a total fail. The shrimp were big and generous, but slightly overcooked. The pasta was a choice of penne or linguine, but I prefer angel hair pasta for scampi. The sauce was not scampi, I really don't know what it was, just a mound of onions and tomatoes, with what tasted more like marsala sauce. It was definitely not a garlicky scampi. I will not order it again. They should check out Cafe Tosca for a fantastic version of scampi, or rename this dish to better describe what you will actually be eating. My companion ordered the steak tips ($14, I think) (medium) with rice and onion rings for sides. What arrived was some medium steak tips, while others were completely rare, a big pile of rice, a big pile of gross looking carrots, and three lonely little onion rings. He really liked the steak tips (even with the cooking inconsistency) and the rice, and liked the onion rings, he just wanted more of them. We did not try dessert on this visit.
Price: It was reasonably priced, but the quality of the food and drinks need to be improved to match the prices.
Suggestions: The bar stools at the high tops don't have backs, and there were no hooks on the wall or under the table, so the girls had no place to put their purses. Every bar should have hooks! No one wants put their purses on a dirty bar floor, and we had to sit on our jackets the whole night.
Overall: We enjoyed it and will definitely be back.
Follow up: I meant to post this after my initial review, but I never got around to it. As I mentioned in my review, they did not make the "Assembly-tini" properly. One of the 3 had very little pineapple juice, and one had none. I had asked the waitress for some pineapple juice so I could fix it myself. Well when I got home that night I realized that they had charged us $5 for the pineapple juice, even though I was using it to fix their improperly made $11 martini. Not cool Assembly, not cool. Now I either don't order a drink while I'm there, or I just get a single ingredient beverage like wine or beer, that requires no mixing from the bartender. I also haven't tried any other food since then, I just keep ordering the beef skewers as my meal because they are absolutely fantastic. read more
