Well, thanks to The Tavern we had it all. :) On a beautiful Wednesday evening we came here for dinner and sat on their patio. It has been quite some time since we have dined here. The view was stunning since we had the perfect seats to watch the sunset. I honestly could've stayed here forever. Our server Megan was friendly and kind. We both started off with a few drinks. I had their Sparkling Pear Martini which was good. We were both starving so we ordered our main dishes and skipped the apps. I had their Grilled Swordfish and my husband had their Baked Scallops. Both were fresh and hot, but mine was a bit overcooked. I did mention this to our server and she kindly apologized. The vegetables that came with it since I substituted the rice for Carrots were delish, flavorful and healthy. The scallops that my husband had were cooked to perfection and I can still taste decadent butter sauce it was baked in. YUMMY! I don't know why this restaurant did not get good reviews, but I would highly suggest going on a beautiful night to watch the sunsets. Slow service and poor food :( The good: - Nice location, good views of the Boston skyline (our table didn't have a direct view of the skyline but it felt bright inside with big windows). The bad: - Extremely slow service. This restaurant appeared heavily understaffed with waitstaff. Our waitress didn't say hello after we sat for at least 15 minutes & was very sporadic in checking on us. - Food was pretty bad. We got a mix of items and no one was wowed by anything unfortunately. Everyone said they wouldn't order any of what we ate again. The photos looked better than it tasted. - We were celebrating a birthday - we made a reservation & made a specific note when booking the reservation. It wasn't acknowledged by the hostess or waitstaff. We weren't expecting anything in terms of a free dessert since we had plans elsewhere, but the hostesses should pay attention to the notes on reservations. read more

I had an extremely disappointing experience here. I came with my partner, and we were the only Black people in the restaurant. The hostess sat us outside and gave us water, but after that, we were completely ignored. We sat for 30 minutes without so much as a check-in, while two parties who arrived after us were served drinks and appetizers almost immediately. There were three servers actively working, so it wasn't an issue of staffing. The day before, I had come with my white-passing friend and had a wonderful time, which is why I wanted to bring my partner back. Unfortunately, this time it felt very different. After half an hour of being overlooked, we got up and left. This was deeply disappointing, and I hope the restaurant reflects on how this experience could happen. read more

I recently received a gift card to this restaurant so this past weekend I decided to take my mother for dinner there. It is a nice restaurant, good sized, and you may sit either in the dining room or at the bar. The menu has something for everybody on it with steaks, sandwiches, seafood and salads available. I had the steak tips. They were delicious and cooked exactly the way that I specified. On the menu it says they are served with fries but my server let me switch out the fries for mashed potatoes instead. I also had the coleslaw that they serve with the steak tips. It is made with kale and is very delicious. My mother had a sandwich and she enjoyed it as well. The atmosphere here is very nice and if you are lucky and can get a table near the windows you will get a great view of the beautiful Boston skyline. We came tonight to celebrate two birthdays for a 5:30 PM reservation. We were seated but right off the bat, the chairs were uncomfortable. Either the chairs are too low or the tables are too high- either way, they didn't match. We decided to ask for a booth. My brother's partner left the table and walked over to the hostess to ask to switch. A few moments later, one of the servers came over and asked what we wanted to drink. My brother politely did a "hi" with his hand, smiled and asked if we could switch over to the nearby booth (there were plenty open). She walked off. It was at this time we found out she described my brother to her coworker out front as putting his hand out to her. His partner saw the commotion and heard her complaint and piped up "that's our table". Another hostess helped us move to a booth. And we had a new server, who was attentive and helpful. Glad we didn't have to deal with the original server. Maybe she was having a bad day and projected that to us? It's not our fault the chairs and tables are uncomfortable. The food: One of us ordered the burger cooked to medium but it came out well done. Roasted chicken lacked seasoning. The nice part ? They deboned it. Mac N Cheese entree had onions in it and cheese didn't taste fresh. He asked for no onions. There were still onions My burrata ravioli was good. Very cheesy and rich. Carrot cake way too sweet. Not good. This is our first and last time here. From the time we were seated until we left, we didn't feel the hostess* and original server provided even basic customer service. Let me say our second server was nice and he did his job right. Luckily we came at an off-peak time and were able to snag a table somewhat close to the windows, where there was a nice view of the Boston skyline and the nearby golf course. We ordered the fish and chips and a chicken dish that I don't remember the name of. My major impressions were that the portions were very generous, the flavors good, but the service was quite slow (it seemed like they only had 1 waitress covering a whole bunch of tables). I see a lot of the reviews on this place aren't great. We enjoy The Tavern for the beautiful views, lively atmosphere and solid food. We kept it simple and just ordered a couple of "Bowls" with proteins, but both delivered great flavors and proper cooks on out proteins The Mexican bowl featured perfectly cooked medium steak tips with vibrant Mexican spices and fresh veggies and Beans over rice. The Asian bowl offered a delightful contrast with its pan-seared scallops. Each scallop was expertly seared to a golden perfection, delivering a delicate yet savory taste. The Asian-inspired sauce and accompanying vegetables added depth and complexity to the dish. The only negative was our waitress was nowhere to be found the entire meal. The bus boys had our table cleaned for a good 15 min before we had to flag her down to the the check. read more

It was my first time there my friends took me for a birthday lunch. Omg why haven't I ever heard or been to The Tavern?? I just Love the atmosphere and the service was superb. Thanks Joe! We started with Shrimp Cocktail and my eyes popped right out my head, 18 large Shrimps with a homemade cocktail sauce ( to die for). My friend Wendy had the Grilled Salmon with a thick slab of salmon pile with purple pickled cabbage and something orange not too sure. Her plate was so colorful on a bed of rice. Her husband and I had the same thing double delicious Half sized Rigatoni, cheese sauce, spinach, peas with shrimp and scallops. Homemade bread with butter. It was so good I kind of overdid it with the bread. I did take half of my lunch home. I didn't really notice too many scallops and I wanted more of the scallops they were so tasty. I cut the scallops and shrimps into small pieces so I could have some in almost every bite. I had a fresh brewed iced tea with lemon. Don't order the clam chowder. I did and it was basically creamy broth. There was minuscule pieces of unidentifiable ingredients perhaps generally included in a clam chowder and 1 piece I could identify as a clam. When collecting the plate my server politely asked how it was. I replied it was basically a broth with with no guts. She said she would inform the kitchen. When paying the bill I asked what did they say and she told me we don't make the clam chowder in house and she too was surprised by this. What a poor excuse! You would think that a restaurant that charged $9 would use this purchased product and improve it by at least adding some potatoes and clams and maybe adding chives and bacon bits just to add to the appearance. I will say the fish sandwich and fries were good but definitely avoid the clam chowder. read more

I have been here many, many times & always enjoyed the food and service. However, we had a birthday party for my sister there on February 11 with 15 people. Between the bar and the restaurant we spent over $1300.00. They gave us one waiter to service the table. While Joe was amazing, his task was impossible. I brought in a very expensive cake with 10 chocolate covered strawberries. When they cut the cake in the kitchen and served it to us by the slice, there were no strawberries to be found. I assume the kitchen staff enjoyed them. I did not know this until the next day when everyone said "who got the strawberries?". Apparently not us. This could have been a very honest error and acceptable except that when I inquired to Granite Links I got zero response. That is not acceptable. read more

One of my favorite places to go when in the Boston area is The Tavern. It's a treat from my parents by choice. They started going here when they realized that you don't have to be a member to dine in the restaurant. The view from this place is magnificent view of Boston. It was amazing to watch the sun go down last night over Boston while enjoying dinner. There is indoor and out door seating. They have valet parking at no cost but tips are appreciated. We started our meal with drinks and warm bread and butter. Off to a fabulous start! For appetizers we share a ceasar salad and shrimp cocktail. I am not a fan of shrimp cocktail, but this was very tasty and perfectly cooked. Huge slivers of parmesan cheese in the salad but a little shy with the croutons. The crisp lettuce and delicous cheese were a hit. There are a variety of soups, burgers, steaks and seafood items available. I was dining with vegetarians and was pleasantly surpised by the good choices available for them. I enjoyed the mushroom and brie pizza. Crisp thin crust covered in mushrooms over brie with fresh herbs was amazing! My friend enjoyed the mac and cheese, very nice blend of cheeses with just enough crunch on top. My other friend enjoyed the clam chowder which I imagine was delicous because he clammed up when it arrived and said nothing until it was gone. A superb summer dining atmosphere. read more

Arrived at 7:30 PM for dinner and got to see a beautiful sunset that turned too quickly into a great view of the skyline. The service was attentive and went at s relaxing pace. The appetizers were served first and everyone's meal was served together (no long waits for all to get their orders at the same time) so we started dinner together. Harder to do with a party of eight. Salmon dinner is recommended along with the bacon wrapped scallops. Calamari is a bit oily. Clam chowder is served perfectly hoy and is delicious. The food was delicious. Well seasoned, right temperatures and reasonable portions. They don't serve lattes but the coffee they served was fresh and hot. Their carrot cake was sweeter and stickier than expected. Usually there's a cake with cream cheese frosting but theirs is like a sticky pie filling with regular sugar (not whipped cream) frosting. The cake is much heavier than the usual. The chocolate cake was reportedly delicious and as chocolate cake should be. This reviewer didn't try it but others at our party like the chocolate cake. Prices seemed reasonable. (Appetizers are around $11/each and entrees are $17 (chicken) to $29 (filet mignon). read more

This is my go-to restaurant for family birthdays. They were closed for renovations this past January and changed the menu, so I wasn't sure if the changes would be to my liking. However, we went there tonight for my son's birthday and we were just as satisfied as we have been in the past. The dining room renovations included new flooring, tables, and chairs which give the space a more modern, bistro feel. The food was solid. I couldn't resist the shrimp cocktail: 12, that's right, 12 large firm shrimp served in a martini glass with tasty cocktail sauce and a lemon wedge. I was full after that, as I couldn't leave any behind. However, I followed up with a substantial caprese salad to make it a meal. My kids had pizza, steak tips with mashed potatoes and asparagus spears, and a big, juicy burger and fries. All were pleased with their meals. The menu is diverse and has something for everyone. Service was good. The server came quickly came over to take our order, but when I said we needed a few more minutes, she came back over a couple of times until we were ready. The tavern always has a dessert tray ready to present when the meal is finished. Each of the six desserts presented were tempting and caused me to order one. And I almost never order dessert. We ordered alpine red velvet cake, strawberry tiramisu, and chocolate lava cake. The alpine red velvet cake is basically red velvet cake covered in white chocolate. It was delicious. The cream cheese frosting between the layers of red cake was delectable. The strawberry in the tiramisu made it more flavorful and visually appealing than any tiramisu I've had. The chocolate lava cake was slightly dry and could have used more chocolate lava. It seemed like Hershey's syrup was used around the edges. Aside from the food, the setting of the restaurant is breathtaking as it is at the Granite Links Golf Course and offers an incredible view of the Boston skyline. It is particularly enjoyable to have a meal here on a clear, sunny day during sunset. Overall, a great place to have lunch or dinner. read more

We went here this past Saturday evening (5:30) and we're escorted to a table right away. We had a nice view of the city and all below us. Drinks were beer and white sangria which was ok and not a true sangria (this was a bar sangria made at time of order and not in batches to marinate to get the flavor it needs) this should not be called sangria. Bread was delivered to the table which was cornbread, it had a good flavor but dry, don't waste the calories on this(I'm a southerner and know my cornbread!) Apps we ordered bacon wrapped scallops and the tater tots... go for the tots! Awesome! Scallops good but the maple flavor a little too much glaze. Dinner was steak tips and fries, good size portions and cooked perfect with a great sauce. We also ordered filet mignon, it was cooked perfect as well. It had mashed potatoes and asparagus both great. Our waitstaff was good and only when the room was hopping did she forget to bring refill drinks. And of course when your ready to book they take their time getting you the check! LOL! We will be back to the Tavern, you can count on it! 3.5 stars but I'll go with the under. I came here for a business lunch for the first time, though I had heard about the place for quite sometime, especially their shrimp cocktail. The shrimp wasn't overcooked and tasted fine, with a tangy cocktail sauce. The shrimp, though, was unevenly sized. While most of the shrimp was on the larger side, a few were rather small...noticeably small. I went for the grilled chicken caesar salad and it was fine, though I was a little confused with some of the proportions of the elements of the salad. Do you want lettuce with your croutons? The chicken was tender and had good grill flavor, so that was encouraging. Service was mediocre and the food took FOREVER to come out. It shouldn't take 30+ mins for a caesar salad and Mediterranean wrap to arrive with the restaurant mostly dead (a la Princess Bride). I wasn't in a hurried pace but I had to find more topics to discuss during this business luncheon than I'm sure the counterpart wanted me to conjure. If you're going to apologize for the length of time for the delivery of food, you could refill our sodas (not like it's a real sacrifice) as appeasement, right? read more

I hate to do this especially with the fact that the Tavern has some of the best views of Boston you could wish for, and the food is pretty good too, but, on a recent visit for lunch i was sitting at a table and next to me in a booth was a lady with a dog sitting next to her. Now this wasn't a service dog, it was the small long haired "pocket book" size dog that some people insist on taking everywhere they go. It was certainly obvious to me so i'm guessing it was certainly obvious to the server. I like dogs, my family has dogs, i had a dog for a while until i discovered i have an allergy to both pet dander and the saliva so double whammy for me. Being allergic to dogs makes this a little uncomfortable for me, sure i could have asked to move, but any restaurant that allow's animals in the dining room is no longer worthy of my patronage. read more

I wanted to really like this place, the interior is beautiful, the atmosphere with the golf course adjacent adds something else, but the food was just average. I got the Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese. Now I am a connoisseur of Buffalo Chicken M&C, and the first rule any kitchen should observe with this dish is if somebody wants BC M&C, rather than just M&C, it's almost certainly because they want the little kick of Franks Red Hot whacking their taste buds as they eat their meal. Yet this was the most mild BC M&C I have ever had, they may as well as named the dish "Chicken Mac & Cheese". The view is tremendous and if you are bringing someone from out of town and want them to see Boston, the view is amazing. The food was just so average. It's pub food but at nice restaurant prices. My food was cold and the order was wrong, but I had appropriately set my expectations pretty low. On a positive note the waitress and staff were all very nice. Awful. Went here for Mother's Day lunch. Server was quite awful: she began our day by yelling at one of the folks in my party "I need to get this chair in there" rather than saying "excuse me". Food was even worse. My wife got turkey tips that were raw in the middle. We told the waitress. after 10 minutes, the manager comes over and says "I'm sorry you didn't enjoy that". Didn't enjoy! More like: "I'm sorry we almost poisoned you." Then the waitress tells us that the chef was appalled it happened, but apparently not appalled enough to come out to us and apologize. It's justtoo bad my wife didn't enjoy her raw turkey. I will say that they did take the turkey off the bill, but they could've handled this much better. We have been coming here since it opened at least 3-4 times a year, and I have always been happy with the food. My last two visits were disappointing though-it is continuing to slip beyond "good". I think they may have changed the management and/or the head chef. The truffle mushroom pizza was disappointing both times, lacking the truffle flavor. I thought they might have forgotten to put it on but the waitress brought some on the side and it didn't make a difference. Whatever they are using now is inferior to what they used in the past. They no longer serve it with a sprig of rosemary that really added something to it. Service was so-so, barely acceptable, not what it was been in the past. I will continue to come here occasionally for the sunset, but it's unlikely I will bring friends or recommend it to others. read more

We have been going to The Tavern for many years and have enjoyed it tremendously. The renovations are great but we have had two awful experiences with the food lately. The menu has changed and old favorites are gone or changed. What has happened to the kitchen? Even the staff (which we know personally) has admitted to us that there have been numerous complaints about the food. We went with friends and all ordered burgers medium rare. All four burgers were very well done and sent back. Fries were cold and onion rings were mushy. Another visit a few weeks later the burger was sent back three times for being very well done. We finally gave up and asked to have it taken off the check. The new beet salad on the menu does not compare to the old one. What about the very popular Thai lettuce wraps with chicken? We love the staff, view and feeling of this bar and restaurant. Please fix the food! read more
