About five minutes later, I asked the bartender if I could instead order the burger, since it already comes with tots. I wasn't asking to combine two dishes or receive anything additional for free. I had simply changed my mind shortly after ordering and wanted to see if my original order could be adjusted. The response I received was that there was no way to "combine" the two. I could have clarified what I meant, and I recognize that. However, I also would have appreciated a little more initiative in understanding what I was asking or checking whether anything could be done, particularly since only a few minutes had passed. Having spent many years in customer service myself, I really value those small moments where someone makes an effort to accommodate a reasonable request when possible. It's often what turns an ordinary interaction into an experience that makes someone want to return. To be clear, the bartender was not rude or unpleasant. He seemed friendly and had great rapport with several familiar guests at the bar, joking with them and taking good care of them. I simply didn't experience that same level of attentiveness as someone who was apparently new to the establishment. Overall, this wasn't a terrible experience or something I'm angry about. It was simply underwhelming. I think a little more curiosity about what I was actually asking for, or even a quick attempt to see what could be done, would have made a significant difference in my impression of the service.

As I've been to England many times, Machine House in Seattle is one of the few place in the states I've had real British ale, especially their Best Bitter.
