Steam Bok Choy with Minced Pork

Alright where do I even start... first of all my food looked like there was maggots in ma food. Second of all my waiter looked like he just came off a dat weed. Cmon brotha we ain't at the liquor store get some better workers. And finally this place is anything but an Asian legend maybe the food is a told legend that the food is TERRIBLE. Never cuming back.

Not sure what any of these are called in English, but once again, ALL DELICIOUS!

This is another one of those spots where I can't believe I haven't written a review yet! Hands down, the best Asian food (specifically TAIWANESE FOOD!) in Ann Arbor! As a Taiwanese American, it was so wonderful to discover this spot when I started school at Michigan and it was easily the go-to spot every time my parents came into town to visit me because obviously, we always want to have Taiwanese food! My only light complaint about Asian Legend is that it can sometimes be inconsistent - at times, overly salty in its dishes or sometimes bland, but given how many times I've come here, the vast majority of dishes/food we get is wonderful and delicious and truly hits the spot! That spot being...my constant craving for Taiwanese food because it's truly the best type of cuisine! Asian Legend has all my favorites, all my comfort foods, from the small dishes/sides like scallion pancakes to the larger mains like rice noodles with beef (I'm trying to translate all of these things over from the Chinese names for all the dishes in my brain lol)! But just trust me on this, everything here is delicious and just depends on preference, but I encourage you to order a plethora from all over the menu in different categories and then share it - family style, of course - with the entire table! Asian Legend doesn't have massive lazy susans in the middle of every table for no reason, after all! In conclusion, if you're craving quality Asian food when you're in the Ann Arbor area, look no further than Asian Legend. It's - dare I say - a hidden gem and very understated in its outward appearance, so you might pass on by it without a single thought, but you just know that's further proof that this one is going to be a good one! Focusing on its food rather than on the environment! I'll take that over everything, any day! Love you, Asian Legend!

Taiwanese street food is some of my favorite food as I grew up eating it. It's a bit hard to find in MI...until I moved to AA! A friend, who used to frequent Asian Legend nearly 10 years ago during his undergrad years, recommended it to me. Asian Legend has partnered with EatStreet for quick online ordering. But, I rely mostly on Chinese characters when I'm ordering Taiwanese food & the EatStreet menu does NOT include Chinese, so I just ended up calling because I ordered the wrong things the first time. But, as a heads up, if you're looking for 滷肉飯 (Lu Rou Fan), it's "Minced Pork Over Rice". The "Braised Pork Over Rice" is 燒肉飯 (Shao Rou Fan) is slightly different. I haven't had it here, but it's typically larger pork belly pieces versus the minced pork which is typically ground pork (as it is here.) Their Onion Pancake Wrapped w/Beef (牛肉捲餅) is pretty dang tasty here. Nice crispiness that held up well in the styrofoam box! It's like a Chinese burrito (but with a green onion pancake instead of a flour tortilla) with marinated pieces of beef shank. The Minced Pork was a GENEROUS portion with the hardboiled soy sauce egg and tasty pickled mustard greens. I was also really impressed by their sauteed pea shoots -- really garlicky & could tell that they used xiao xia mi (little dried shrimp that you can't really see) for that nice punch of umami -- exactly like how my mom used to! I was pleasantly surprised that it came with a box of rice too -- not sure if it's because I ordered during lunch. I'd love to see Asian Legend around for another 10 years, so please support your local restaurants and find your new Taiwanese fav!

Eggplant with Fried Tofu

What's with all of the bad reviews? Two main takeaways: people in A2 would rather have Panda Express than authentic Taiwanese food, and people overvalue service, which is always going to be poorer at Asian restaurants. I was very happy with our dinner. We had fried tofu with basil, eggplant with tofu, noodles with pork, and garlic bok choi. The tofu was plump and juicy, with lots of sauve in all of the dishes. The eggplant was a huge hit, our favorite of the bunch. The noodles were thin, with lots of Taiwanese-seasoned pork bits. I though portions were quite reasonable for the price: ~$45 got us three entrees and a side and fed us for five meals. Rice was included with the veggie entrees. I would definitely come back.

I get that covid has turn the restaurant industry up-side down and a lot of creative ideas has to be hatched during government ordered shutdown. I've heard of covid service fee or raising prices to offset the delivery cost, etc. However, all the emergency orders were lifted, dine-in is allowed, masks are optional.... but mandatory tipping for dine-in? Call it an excuse, convenience or just going with the flow, but Asian Legend automatically adds 15% tip for dine-in. I've been to lot of restaurants since the government allowed dine-in, all the places that I've visited do not automatically include tips, it was optional - especially for party of two. Yeah, don't think I'll be coming back again.... and it's been around 9 years since my last visit. I came by with my nephew for lunch. We were the first customers (12pm); got seated and reviewed the menu. To order, you indicate what you want on the paper menu and we went with the following: - Taiwanese baby bokchoy with garlic - Eggplant with sliced pork and basil - Beef Chow fun - Fried chicken (chicken with basil) - Onion pancake wrapped with beef We enjoyed the meal. The least favorite was the fried chicken - really had no flavor to it. The onion pancake was excellent - good way to start off the meal as a starter. Overall, good lunch, as stated was taken back with the mandatory tip!

Onion pancake, Taiwanese Rice Noodles with Minced Pork, fried shrimp, Taiwanese Cabbage with Garlic

Lived in the Ann Arbor area for years and never heard of this place until now! Was recommended by my boss who is Taiwanese. We went here for a work party and tried a variety of Taiwanese dishes including onion pancakes and onion pancakes with beef, eggplant and oysters, cabbage with garlic, and fried shrimp (not sure what the name is), and some sort of pork noodle stir fry with mushrooms. The only thing that I didn't like was the tea- very weak. Otherwise a great spot and it was super busy when we were there but our food came pretty quickly for a large group!

Chow Fun w/Beef ~ Although one of my favorite, this dish is pretty oily.

One of the best places on campus to get Chinese food. My boyfriend and I usually like to get the Chow Fun w/Beef, Yung Chow Fried Rice, and the Onion Pancake Wrapped w/Beef. Pros: - Authentic Taiwanese food - Tasty and a wide variety of food - Pretty good service for an Asian restaurant ~ Servers know Mandarin and English - Large portion sizes ~ This is more a family style restaurant - Main dishes are decently priced for the portion - Large restaurant ~ Good if you want to eat alone, eat with a small group, or eat with a large group of friends Cons: - Food can be on the oiler side - Appetizers are a bit pricey ~ The onion pancake (which is a starter) was the same price as the chow fun (which is a main dish) Overall: - Asian Legend is my go to if I'm looking for some Chinese/Taiwanese food

Vermicelli with minced Pork
Amy L.

This is probably my favorite authentic Chinese restaurant in Ann Arbor! They have sooo many options and from all the dishes I've tried, they're all really good. Can't wait to try more items on their menu. I also love getting their personal bento boxes to go - braised pork over rice and chicken over rice are my go to's. As for their authentic dishes my favorites are the vermicelli and minced pork, eggplant with garlic sauce , and the tofu, intestine, and mustard green.

Fried chicken over white rice dish.

I got the fried chicken over white rice dish. Very flavorful. Nice indulgent meal that's not too heavy on the stomach.

Kangkong garlic sauce

Finally found a Singaporean favorite in Ann Arbor, stir fry kangkong and horfun and they are amazing! Fyi its not sambal belacan but garlic stir fry, still, im happy to find two dishes that im familar with and craving since covid lockdown! 10/10 for the Horfun, great noodle texture, thick, huge pieces, flavorful. Gravy is thick, not too salty, owner isnt stingy with meat. 9/10 for the kangkong, If only it was sambal belacan haha but other than that the garlic sauce is nice too. 3/10 Cashew Prawn, erm.. Too dry, the sauce seems weak, too much veggies. This restaurant is my new fav and i will be back!

Hot and Sour Soup $7 (good) and 4 Piece Crab Meat Rangoon (not the best)
Hali M.

Definitely the most authentic Taiwanese we've found near the Ann Arbor area over the past 6 months. This is our GO TO spot, they deserve a lot more credit for authenticity and solid food. I generally get their boba drinks which are great, hot and sour $7 that is OK, and crab Rangoons are eh. We also generally get the mapo tofu which is great and we try other items from time to time, such as the intestine which was OK but not crispy enough. All in all- our fave authentic Taiwanese restaurant in the nearby Ann Arbor area. Worth it!

Chinese Chive with Shrimp and Egg
Zhao C.

This is definitely the place to go if you're looking for a large variety of authentic Chinese and Taiwanese dishes, meaning dishes you would order if you were actually in China or Taiwan. I ordered the Chinese Chives with Shrimp and Egg and the classic Ma Po Tofu and requested to have both spicy. I was happy to see that they did indeed make it spicy by adding chili peppers to both the dishes - really enjoyed experiencing a taste of home :) Their portion sizes are huge too, so come hungry or get ready for leftovers!

Michelle T.

The Taiwanese food here is really good and authentic! This is the only place in Ann Arbor I could find that serves oyster omelet which is one of my favorite Taiwanese dishes - I always get this specific item whenever I visit relatives in Taiwan. They also have a lot of other yummy dishes I like to order such as the three cup chicken, ma po tofu, and lu rou fan (minced pork over rice). It felt like a taste of home having some of these things. Like most Chinese/Taiwanese restaurants, it's more fun to eat with a larger group so you can order/try as many dishes as possible. The prices here are fair for the portion sizes you get. I haven't had an issue with service. However, I do speak mandarin and the people I usually eat with also speak mandarin with the servers. That may be a contributing factor.

Food is good but is expensive considering the price and the amount of food. They also charge tips directly so it's annoying.

BUUT why are you closed every time I'm craving Chinese? I get it. Everyone deserves time off. You're a small family business. Work-life balance, as they say! But I want my (huge, perfectly crisp, bursting with deliciousness) egg rolls dammit! I've even got my parents who live in Arizona hooked on you like a drug. Only to be disappointed whenever they are in town-sure enough you are closed! It's becoming a running joke in my family. I'll call and get a busy signal on your single phone line as many times as it takes (11, to be exact tonight). Today, I hit rock bottom and ended up getting the most awful/greasy/disappointing almond boneless chicken and salty weird wonton soup from another establishment, like an addict who needs her fix). Never again. I understand that good things come to those who wait... I'll keep waiting for you, Szechuan Gourmet. Please be gentle with my heart. And my tastebuds. And my GI tract.

The guy "tag-teamed" his wife to come out of the kitchen and bicker with me, right in front of multiple other customers, when I "dared" to speak up about their tone and attitude, then repeatedly pointed to a sign on the wall that said "we match your energy" (AKA: "we reserve the right to be total a****les for any and all perceived slights, real or imagined") when I had the "audacity" to complain about how they spoke to me and my dad on the phone and in-person. They were furious that my elderly dad was "taking too long" to place his order for four people (he was not, at all) and acting like it's somehow our fault that they only have a single phone line. Give me a break (take-out only establishment, by the way). They then proceeded to promptly cancel my dad's order and shoo me out, all the while cussing at me in Mandarin, at which point I walked out of there (for the last time). You would do well to AVOID this place at all costs, trust. Not to mention, I've had their food more than a few times before, and it is not even NEARLY good enough to justify them being this nasty towards their patrons. Their offerings are the very definition of "sodium-infused slop" and "mediocre at best" and they act like we are lucky to be allowed to purchase them. What a joke! Do yourself a HUGE favor (like I did) and pay a little extra for a place with WAY better people and service, and MILES better quality food, places such as Shangri-La (amazing!), for example. Never, ever again. You have been warned!

Anything like String Beans with Garlic, or Beef with Broccoli, is going to be perfectly acceptable for a road warrior like you. The location, consistency, and ease of triangulation with regards to ordering over the phone (or having your shotgun passenger order) about 10 minutes before you reach this Hwy exit merits a solid 4-star review. The food is 3-star ish, but the mere existence of this place warrants a bonus "Oasis" star.

Total plot twist. The place was pretty quiet with only a few diners, so service was steady, though a little slow at times. We ordered the veggie noodles, cucumber salad, lamb skewers, xianbing pancake, and juicy pork dumplings. Overall, the food was decent and comfortably average, but honestly, we were just excited to finally find a Szechuan-style Chinese restaurant nearby. The veggie noodles were the clear winner of the night: chewy, flavorful, and coated in a sauce that had us going back for bite after bite. I could've done without the bok choy, though, and I wish the noodles had been a little less oily. The cucumber salad leaned much sweeter than we expected and was swimming in a bit too much soy sauce for our taste. The pork dumplings were nice and juicy inside, but the wrappers were slightly too doughy. Now the lamb skewers? Absolutely delicious. Great flavor, good portion size, and easily one of the highlights of the meal. The biggest disappointment, unfortunately, was the xianbing pancake. It didn't feel authentic at all. The crepe was way too thick, and the crispy crackers inside had lost all crunch and turned soggy instead. Still, the cozy vibe, solid noodles, and tasty skewers made it a worthwhile visit, especially if you're craving Szechuan flavors around Madison Heights.
