A lot of the NoVA hibachi spots aren't open for lunch on the weekends. We chose Sakura Grill because it was one of the few that were. We came for a Sunday lunch and it was nearly empty. Service was pleasant, but the hibachi chef did the bare minimum. We started with a couple appetizers - the crab rangoons, takoyaki, and an eel roll. All were satisfactory and brought out quickly, but noticeably absent from the takoyaki were the bonito flakes. I will commend the restaurant for being mindful of dietary restrictions. We had someone in our party who requested no onions in their hibachi, and the chef was able to accommodate without any issues. We also had someone who ordered the vegetable hibachi, and the staff asked whether that diner was a vegetarian and advised that the hibachi meals came with shrimp. Another plus was that they had a sink in the dining area to wash your hands. Each hibachi meal comes with a small house salad and hibachi soup (mushroom based broth with fried onions). You can also swap out for the miso soup, if you like. The filet mignon was nice and tender. I could've done with more flavor, but I guess that's what the dipping sauces are for. One of my favorite things about going to a hibachi place is the fried rice. This fried rice was average, and the veggies were also average... everything was average. Unfortunately, we noticed flies hovering around the lights shortly after being seated, which wasn't the best first impression. One thoughtful touch was the availability of Fun Chops (chopstick helpers), making it easier for guests who aren't comfortable using traditional chopsticks. The drink menu featured a nice selection of sake, beer, and cocktails, but we opted for Thai iced teas instead. We couldn't tell whether they were made with brewed tea or powdered mix, but they tasted noticeably bitter and weren't particularly enjoyable. The sushi presentation was definitely creative! Ordering two classic rolls or one signature roll meant your sushi arrived on a rectangular mirror with color-changing lights and a dark-colored shell. It was a fun visual touch that made the presentation stand out. My friend ordered two classic rolls: the Spicy Kani Crab Mix and Avocado Roll and the Eel and Cucumber Roll. The Spicy Kani Crab Mix and Avocado Roll contained imitation crabmeat mixed with sriracha, mayonnaise, sesame seeds, and avocado. While he enjoyed trying the rolls, he felt the Spicy Kani Crab Mix Roll wasn't spicy enough. I ordered the Chin-Chinlicious Roll, which sounded much more exciting on the menu. At the end of our meal, we received fortune cookies. My friend's fortune read, "If we do not change our direction, we are likely to end up where we are headed." Mine read, "Man has limitless capacity to achieve goodness." Overall, Chin Chin Cafe earned 3 stars from me.
