Ahhhh,- the Palace Hotel. Since I don't use internet when I travel, I have no idea what their access costs but if the price of a Mimosa is any indication ($22 at current Euro/Dollar rates), then I'm sure it's expensive. This hotel has such a beautiful sky-domed drinks & tappas area that people come from all over the city for business lunches, drinks after work, etc. While the hotel and restaurant are 1st class both in service and quality,- it's quite expensive. While the cost is about the same as the Ritz (less than a block away), this hotel has a "lock" on the "old-world" ambiance thing... Why else would Bill Clinton insist on staying here whenever he comes to Madrid?! read more

Stayed at the Westin Palace back in March 2011. Located not far from the Museo Prado and just next to the Plaza de las Cortes, the Westin Palace once served as a home for the Spanish royalty. It's been since restored to its former glory, and then some. For you Americans, a Starbucks is handily attached to the building just along the Plaza. Numerous restaurants and pubs line the back alleyways. Just be mindful that siesta is in full effect between 2 PM through 5 PM. read more

The best thing about this property is its central location - you are mostly paying for this. But having said that, you'll save a TON of $$ on transportation because everything is in walking distance. We didn't take the metro at all because you can walk everywhere. The rooms are big for european standards and very comfortable. I thought the one thing that was missing was a self-service coffee/tea maker in the rooms - there was no way to boil hot water so if you want a drink, you have to walk downstairs instead of making it yourself. read more

I stayed here by myself for the start of a 2 week solo trip last February. The property is very nice and the staff was quite friendly and helped in tracking down my luggage which the airline left who knows where. My room was beautiful and I really enjoyed the location. Easy and safe for a gal to walk around late at night, early in the morning and all day long. My only complaint was that I didn't find the food to be that great in the hotel. Thankfully, there are many other places to eat in this grand city, but sometimes it's nice to have breakfast in bed. I very much enjoyed the bar that had the air of a library even though there was large groups of gentlemen watching soccer and not tremendously quiet either. But a nice atmosphere and very comfortable. I got a really good deal on the price so I don't know if that has made it seem a lot better than it was, but I've stayed in some of the nicest and best rated hotels from Asia to South America and I was happy with my stay. read more

The hotel has many charms--from the elegant facade to the above-average service--but it also has numerous issues. We had a room overlooking Neptune's fountain and that was the highlight of our room. The room itself was overwhelmingly plain and showed numerous signs of wear (stains here, there, and everywhere; bathroom ceiling peeling, leaky/squeaky shower door, etc.). More than anything the room felt very dated and many important details seemed to have been neglected. For instance, the bathroom was railroad style (e.g. hallway length) and the toilet/bidet area was in the very back. On its own this is meaningless, but when you realize there are no dim or night-oriented lights, you quickly realize that you must trudge this distance guided by blazingly bright lights should you need to relieve yourself during the night. There were no cotton balls/pads in the room. Also no qtips/cotton swabs. Fortunately, at this late point in our trip, I was traveling with both. If you need these common toiletries and choose to stay here, I recommend that you bring them with you. Our less than stellar experience with the restaurant (La Rotonda) deserves its own review, but suffice it to say that we disliked the majority of the food we were served. The service in the restaurant was relatively quick, kind, and attentive, but untouched dishes should have garnered some verbal curiosity (if not a prompt for replacement or substitution) at the very least. They were simply whisked away wordlessly. We'd have complained and/or protested, but we were simply too tired to bother (this was the last night of a 10 day trip). Lastly, the restaurant's atmosphere is visually engaging, but it lacks intimacy (e.g. it's a cavernous and somewhat disjointed space). The overall service in the hotel was very good. All of our requests were responded to in a timely manner and both our check in and check out were relatively quick and pleasant. The location of this hotel is quite good as it's adjacent to the Prado Museum, fronts the fountain of Neptune, and is very centrally located. Numerous museums and restaurants (among other establishments) are within easy walking distance. Fortunately, we only spent one night here, but one was more than enough. We would not consider staying here again. BOTTOM LINE: A charming, but dated hotel that needs renovating. Our room showed many signs of wear and lacked toiletries that were common elsewhere. Not worth the price we paid. read more

There's a reason why this hotel incorporates 'Palace' into the name - you may very well end up feeling like royalty during your stay. So, it's widely considered that the Ritz and the Westin Palace are the poshest hotel properties in Madrid. And after visiting the Ritz just to check it out and being told we couldn't walk past a certain invisible line unless we were guests, I'd say that the Palace is just as swanky but without the haughty high horse judgement (and yes, we were dressed appropriately). I traveled during the off-season, so stellar rates were available, otherwise this property would be well out of my budget. Because I try to stay exclusively at Starwood properties whenever I can, I've earned Platinum status and the Westin Palace definitely takes good care of their most loyal customers. We were upgraded to a spacious suite, with a bottle of chilled cava and chocolate truffles awaiting us as we met our accommodations for the first time. We were also given a gift certificate for 2 complimentary drinks at the bar because we had to wait a couple of hours for our suite to be ready. Nice touch! The location is ideal - the Museo del Prado and the Spanish Parliament are only mere steps away and you really feel like you're in the center of it all. With our free breakfast perks, we had our most deluxe breakfast experience during our 7 days in Spain. The buffet is elaborate but quite spendy at 34€ per head (that's approx. 44USD!). However, I don't think you'd be disappointed if you decided to splurge one morning. Service. Location. And loads of old-world glamour await! So why 4 stars instead of 5? After getting soaked by a scattered shower, I opted to get a fresh blow-out in the hotel salon. While being shampooed, I was asked if I wanted conditioner... well of course I want conditioner! Have you seen my super thick and thirsty mane? 45 minutes and one reasonably impressive blow-out later, I was presented with a bill of 100€. As it turns out, the 'conditioner' turned out to be a special Kérastase mask. Would have been helpful if they would have informed me that I was about to sign up for the most expensive blow-out of my life due to the 'conditioner' add-on. It hurt, and it still hurts now. Lesson learned: don't make assumptions, ever. Still enjoyed my two lovely nights at what is likely one of the nicest Westin properties in the world. Just use caution when visiting the salon! read more

The Westin Palace in Madrid is such an amazing place to stay. I felt like royalty staying there - service was impeccable! Our room was palatial - generous sized rooms, large comfortable beds, and every amenity needed to provide for a restful stay. The location is perfect - a close distance to the Prado, Sofia Reina and the Thyssen-Bornemisza, and only a 10-minute walk to Puerta Del Sol and Plaza Mayor. The location feels really safe since it's right across the street from government offices and there are several embassies in the vicinity. If you're in the mood to feel like a member of the royal family, just spend a week here, and they'll be calling you "your Majesty" before you know it! read more

Beautiful hotel in a central location! The rooms are quite large with beautiful bathrooms and excellent toilettes. The staff, as expected, was very attentive and professional. Room service was quick although expensive. The best part is its proximity to everything. The hotel is across the street from the Prado, a short walk to La Barraca (the best place for paella), close to San Miguel's Mercado (yum) and within the hotel for us Americans who need a Starbucks once in a a wile, there is a Starbucks within the hotel. Ever notice the nicer the hotel the more expensive the internet access is? Not sure why but that seems to be the trend. Other than that, there isn't too much to complain about here, though I guess you can say, it's not cheap. The crazy thing was we were staying here when Madrid Atletico was playing for their championship, and where does everybody celebrate? In front of the fountain next to the hotel. The first night was mayhem and I was walking with a million other Spaniards when they won at midnight, It made it hard to get back in my hotel, i was shielded from the rest of the world in my comfy bed and excellent bathroom. The intercom system where they can talk to you through your tv is a bit alarming (they do tests sometimes) but otherwise it's an excellent hotel in the heart of Madrid. If you know what you're doing, you can use the net to get some pretty good discounts here. 4.5 stars read more

I always sing the praises of SPG properties and this visit is no different!! The Westin Palace was a beautiful hotel located in the heart of Madrid, within walking distance to the major hot spots: Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Mercado de San Miguel, Palacio Real, Prado Museum , it was a perfect choice for our vacation. The Popa was in town during our visit last summer, so it was a bit hectic, the Palace truly was an oasis away from all of the chaos of the crowds I remember there was a small accessories shop(Loewe) in the lobby, where there were some beautiful handbags and scarves, that were offered at a steep premium. There is also a great wine shop, where we gathered some of our favorite Spanish wines from our trip. The rotunda was just magnificent, a great spot to sit for some peace and quiet and grab a drink. I found myself sunken into a fluffy couch staring up at the stain glassed dome. We lounged in the Bar Palace which is a nice library, study area where we had an evening cocktails before bedtime. The Palace also had some very nice restaurants within, we ended up celebrating my birthday one evening at the Asia Gallery restaurant. The service and food were both top notch! Our room was enormous, it had great light and airy with a fabulous view of the Spanish architecture of the neighboring buildings. As always the heavenly bed, made it hard to want to get out of bed in the morning and go see the sights during our vacation, although it made drifting off to sleep happened at record speed, it was also rather large compared to European standards. The bathroom was pristine, creamy marble through out with a separate area for the toilet and bidet. I really appreciated the double sinks, so that I didn't have to share with my husband. The concierge was incredibly helpful, she consolidated our travel agenda and directed us to what she thought was the must see sites, she made great recommendations for places to eat and even arrange our reservations for us. read more

We stayed here on Starwood points. This is a beautiful property, but I am not sure I would pay the rack price, especially for an interior room which overlook the top of the glass atrium. Service was top notch and friendly. You melt into the heavenly beds. Its right across the street from the Prado, a short walk from Atocha and there is large Starbucks on the street level of the hotel. Not, perhaps a full 5 star...but..I think much better than the Ritz across the street. Rooms are larger and the AC actually works. Really, no better way to start your day than a terrific breakfast with fresh squeezed OJ (the norm in Spain) in the lovely glass Atrium. Excellent location for virtually anything in Madrid. Expensive...not so bad...I thot a pretty good deal on Hotels.com...you can occasionally priceline some of the better hotels....and there are much "hipper" hotels....that have ice bars etc. But....we come home from a full day of touristing and eating and drinking (too much)...we just want to crash in a soothing environment. Which this hotel is ! If touristing....check out "MadSegs" segway tours...try to do it on your first day to get a sense of the city.. also...if you like the segways...do an evening tour....we came home and I bought two of the damn things :) read more

When our parents joined us for a two weeks in the middle of a backpacking expedition, my best friend and I couldn't have been happier. Especially since the Westin Palace was where we ended up staying while in Madrid. The rooms were gorgeous and even with a roll-away added for my sister, we still had plenty of room to move about. The hotel bar with the large glass domed roof was a gorgeous place to meet every day as we set out on our way and to grab a drink when we wanted to rest our tired feet. I'll never forget getting locked in the hotel. After our parents left us, my best friend and I had a couple more weeks to run around Spain, but were flying out of Madrid. For our last night in the city we went back to Las Cuevas for dinner and to have a drink in the bar/lounge at the Westin. We stayed so late that we finally realized it was time for us to go when the staff came in to clean up and fluff the pillows for the next morning. Sad we had to walk back to our hostel, we laughed like school girls when we couldn't get out the front door and had to get the desk clerk to unlock the door for us. Best. Trip. Ever! read more

Ran into the Japanese Prime Minister and his security detail here. He called my 6 year old daughter "cute". Can't beat that. Lot's of police in the area. Wow. One of the best hotels I've stayed in ever. Staff was super helpful; the rooms are excellent, clean, and a good size...all up to date. An absolute marvel of architecture and right across from the famous Prado museum. I'm used to pretty mediocre or poor breakfasts when they're included in your room...let me say this: you don't want to miss this one. Absolutely every food you could imagine and more. And the rate we got as part of a group was under 200 euro...a steal! I felt like a thief signing my bill. Our friends had a wedding there (a small one) and the hotel exceeded everyone's expectations all the way...even surprising the couple with a secret photographer so that when they came back to their suite about 2 hours later, they found an 8x10 photo already in a silver frame set up in their room as a gift from the hotel. In 30 years of travel, I've yet to see such a consistently high level of service. Highly recommended. read more

Are you a vegan living off of patatas bravas and in need of some serious protein? I love potatoes as much as the next person but that's not a sustainable lifestyle, unfortunately. Asia Gallery will hook you up with delicious tofu sautéed with vegetables. I don't know if I was just nutrient deprived or what, but I went nuts for what I expected to be a pretty boring dish. I made everyone try it, though, because the vegetables were so fresh and amazing. The asparagus and mushrooms were especially on point. Our waitress understood what vegan was and guaranteed that there was nothing fishy with my dish. She took care to bring me plain rice when the table ordered fried. I just felt super comfortable eating here, and the food was so satisfying. I finished with a cup of mint tea that was pretty perfect. I was with a few people who speak perfect Spanish, so I'm not sure how well I would've been able to communicate with the staff on my own, but since this is in a hotel, I have a feeling it wouldn't have been too difficult. read more

Really a great location. Perfect for the museums, retiro park, and the train station. The concierge led us to some great restaurants and really everyone we came in contact with was very efficient and friendly. Our room was extremely hot even after turning off the air and opening a window. I told the concierge and it was fixed when we returned. I only mention it so you don't suffer a couple of nights like we did. They have a deal where if you don't mind them not changing the sheets and towels for a day you can get 500 points or another couple of options. I would have been happy to take this offer if they had put more than two towels in the room. Probably my only complaint was not enough towels for the apparent plushness of the place. We had an inside room and you couldn't hear a sound so with the heavenly bed it was great for some great restorative sleep. Pretty pricey but you can figure that out. read more

I had high expectations for the Westin Palace based on reviews and the write up in our travel book. I used some of my upgrade nights to get a junior suite and was very pleased with the size of the room. In particular, the closet was extremely large and had plenty of shelf space for our clothes. The quality of the food in the breakfast buffet was hit or miss. One day they had a nice selection of fresh fruit. The next day the fruit looked awful. The service in the restaurant was very friendly. However, I would expect a 5 star hotel to provide a black napkin when someone is wearing dark colored clothes. This is something that almost all mid-tier Sheraton properties provide. It may seem petty but this is a 5 star hotel and they should pay attention to the smallest of details. My biggest issue with the hotel was with one front desk employee. I was waiting in the SPG Platinum line to get my room key redone when the front desk employee allowed someone to cut in front of me. When I spoke with the front desk manager he told me that he was new to the property and has found that the front desk staff is very traditional. Meaning that they have a lot of long time customers and sometimes serve them ahead of others. This was extremely annoying since I stay at the same hotel SPG property almost every week and would never expect or allow the staff to allow me to cut in line. Overall, I was extremely disappointed in the service provided by the Westin Palace. read more

Ambiance, service and even price wise for a restaurant in a luxury hotel, it deserve 4 stars. However, for the taste of the food...I was sad to say that the food was just okay. Soft shell crab was too salty and the recommended spicy prawns were just that, mayonnaise and sriracha sauce mixed together. I reallllly really want to praise the lobster and scallops but it was just frustrating...I wanted it so bad to be as good as the place and the service, but the taste was just just okay. I probably should have ordered something else, but alas, first impression for the food was not promising. I might give it a go next time I want to go to somewhere fancy. read more

I love Westin hotels and stay there whenever possible. Their Heavenly bed are amazing. The Palace hotel in Madrid is amazing - great location, great service and superb decor. The room was a good size for their standard room. We brought our own bathroom items such as shampoo and conditioner because we were told not every hotel will have that for you in Europe no matter how nice the hotel! But I knew the Westin would not let us down - the have their usual stuff you find in their US locations. I could have had more room in my suitcase haha :). The only issue I had was the circuit outlets are funky. I was blow drying my hair and it stopped after 2mins! I messed around with it for a little bit but gave up. No big deal when you compare that to all of the good things about this hotel. That's the only reason why I gave then 4 instead of 5stars. read more

I didn't stay at the hotel, but came here with a friend to rest my tired feet after an afternoon at the Prado. The rotunda is simply stunning and is worth a trip to the Westin on its own just to see it. Food and drinks were not cheap, but we got a good snack (I had the gazpacho) that was pretty tasty. If you need somewhere to take a break from all your museum hopping, think about coming here. read more

Location, location, location! This hotel is situated perfectly around great eateries and the main plazas in Madrid. The hotel itself is fancy and clean (old school fancy, not modern). The rooms could use a little touch up though. Our bathroom shower had a corner that looked like it was sagging and had evidence of a little mold. Still, I really enjoyed the historic feel to this place. No coffee machine in your room, it you could call the service express line for a fresh pot with steamed milk (once per day). I would love to stay here again! read more

We stayed at the Westin Palace Madrid for 4 nights at the end of May 2014. The location cannot be beat and I thought our room was very nice (I was expecting something a bit more tired). We were on the second floor and heard no street noise. The breakfast buffet was wonderful (we had it every day) and we were able to use free internet every day for several hours (including at the lobby) so there was no need to buy paid internet. The gym was very nice and is open 24-hours, which really sets it apart from most hotel gyms you'll find in Europe. However, for a 5-star hotel, the service was lacking, at least for us. We are a very young looking couple, and we are sometimes treated like kids. This is fine when we go to some dive bar, but not if we are staying at a 5-star hotel. If you are a registered guest and are paying the money, you should be treated the same as any other guest, regardless of whether you look like you can afford to stay at the hotel or not (if you gave them the money, then you can afford it). We arrived in the evening and came straight from the train station with our roller bags. We walked in to the hotel and the doorman in the front didn't even look at us. He didn't welcome us, ask to take our bags, or even look in our direction. We had to drag our bags up the first flight of stairs leading to the check-out. The person assisting us with check in was fairly condescending to us while we could see the woman next to him being extremely pleasant to a group of older men who were checking in next to us. This check-in experience left a bad taste in our mouth. I will say that we got excellent service during breakfast and one employee working on Saturday, May 31 really went out of his way to help us store our bags. He ran right up to us and grabbed our bags to make sure we weren't dragging them around, which is the way it should be. read more

The hotel is in a great location, right near the Prado, and is very clean with lots of amenities. The staff was very accomodating. The one downside was the internet access. When you go to connect, it will tell you you may login using the free WIFI, however when we went to check out they told us that was only for the WIFI in the lobby - although it clearly says when connecting to the internet that it is free unless you choose a higher speed internet or more access! We did not discover this until paying our bill on the way out. We did argue this with the staff, and they ultimately took it off our bill. read more

Me and my husband had a beautiful stay in Westin Palace. The staff were very polite and friendly. Since we are SPG members we were upgraded to free high-speed internet, which was very nice. The location of the hotel is awesome! right in heart of Madrid, close to the museums, Retiro park, Royal Palace, Puerta del sol, Plaza Mayor, San Miguel Mercado, and many restaurants, cafes and bars. The only negative comment I have was about a taxi that the hotel watchman got for us to take us to the airport. When the watchman asked which terminal we are going to, my husband decided to go back in the hotel where he had access to WiFi to check his United App to figure out the terminal number. The watchman didn't let us go back in the hotel. He assured us that the taxi driver has a chart that matches the airlines with the terminals, so he knows exactly which terminal he should takes us to. The airport was very far. We finally got there. The taxi driver was unloading our luggage and we were looking for United Airline sign, but we were not able to find it...apparently we were at the wrong terminal. The taxi driver was trying to convince us in Spanish that this is the right terminal. There was another taxi driver who heard our conversation. He told us with confidence that we are at the wrong terminal and we have to go to terminal 1 before we lose our flight. My husband was confused! One taxi driver was saying that this terminal is right and the other one was saying it's wrong. My husband left me with the luggage and the taxi driver and ran into the terminal to find an information desk. While my husband was gone, the taxi driver was very rude to me. I don't know Spanish so I don't know exactly what he was saying but I could understand his angry tone and his rudeness. I did understand though that he was asking for 10 more Euros because we were wasting his time by not trusting him. Finally my husband came back running and telling me that we are at the wrong terminal. The taxi driver put the luggage back in the trunk with anger and drove to terminal 1. On our way to terminal 1, we were afraid we lose our flight , so we tried to speak with him in basic English and ask him to drive a little faster. He just stared at us in the mirror and didn't say one word even in Spanish. He was trying to be rude and show us his anger. I don't understand why he was so angry, we should have been angry not him. We finally got to terminal 1. Although he gave us so much stress by taking us to the wrong terminal I was willing to pay him more. We got out of the taxi. My husband wanted to open the trunk to unload the luggage, but the taxi driver put his hand on the trunk and asked for his money. That was a little strange. Maybe he thought that we don't want to pay him. My husband paid him more than what he asked for. Then he opened the trunk, took my husband's luggage and literally through it out of the trunk on the ground. I was shocked!!!!! what was he doing? Why was he doing that? I quickly stretched my hands to pick up my own luggage out of the trunk so that he doesn't do the same to mine. But he didn't let me touch my luggage. He again lifted my carry-on and through it at me. I didn't know what to say!!!!!! I was just shocked!!!!! After such a nice and pleasant trip in Madrid and dealing with such a nice people in Westin Palace and overall in the city, I was not expecting such a behavior especially when I was actually about to leave Madrid. I'm so sorry for that taxi driver. Maybe if the hotel watchman hadn't trusted the taxi driver and let us check the terminal ourselves, this would not had happened -:( read more
