Ashley's of Rockledge is located in a historic Tudor that has seen its share of businesses. Through the years its been Jack's Tavern, Cooney's Tavern, the Mad Duchess, the Loose Caboose, Sparrow Hawk and Gentleman Jim's before it becoming Ashley's in 1985. Back when it was known as Jack's in 1934, the body of Ethel Allen, a 19 year old local of the area, was found violently murdered on the shores of the nearby Indian River. She was known as a regular of Ashley's and it was one of the last places she was seen. Her killer was never caught. It is believed that Ethel's murder has resulted in ghostly activity centered around the ladies restroom. People have also reported the feeling of being pushed by an invisible force while ascending or descending the stairs. Lights have been seen flickering on and off during the night, burglar alarms go off, and glasses and dishes fall and break without cause. Employees hear whispering in the restaurant after closing and find that objects have moved when they open the next morning. I love a good ghost story so I have wanted to visit Ashley's every time I passed the exit but I was always rushing off to somewhere else. I finally got a chance to explore a bit of Rockledge this summer and fell in love with Brevard County's oldest city. I had lunch at Ashley's it was an interesting experience. The place looks worn but I guess that is part of the ambiance. There is a first and second floor to dine on. I can't say I received the warmest welcome but I settled in for lunch. Ashley's thrives on its ghost stories. The menu is filled with nods to its reputation as being haunted. Sections include sinister starters, Ashley's eternal favorites, spirits, drafts of the dead, wicked wines, ghostly pasta, slaughterhouse, killer burgers, dead man's tacos, ghoul greens, souls and stew, and death by dessert. The menu has several pages of American homestyle food and prices are reasonable. I had a serviceable patty melt with fries. Unlike the spirits of Ashley's I didn't linger long but was happy to strike it off my bucket list. read more

Had lunch today. Young kid server, not attentive with the typical millennial attitude. Ordered steak/onion sub with tomato, lettuce, mayo, the works. I got a sub roll w/melted cheese and very little meat. Asked server to correct the order and he just took it off the bill. Next, ordered a pizza to go. The dough must come frozen and pre-formed. It was uniform in size and had no noticeable chew like a fresh pizza. no manager came around to ask about our experience or issue with the order. Run...don't walk...away! Just read the ghost stories online and skip the torture of the food and service here. We had a party of 6. One meal was not brought with the rest of the food. The 5 that came together were all delivered cold (fries, steak, chicken). The encrusted parmasan steak was inedible...rare inside and burnt outside...and had some shredded parmasan cheese on top. Not encrusted. Piled on top. The hamburger had gristle and a chemical taste (similar to the nasty steak!). So it didn't get eaten. The chicken parmasan was cold and it felt like it was a frozen chicken nugget dipped in watered down canned marinara. The description said it was served with a salad and one side and served over noodles. When we ordered, the waitress asked what we wanted as a side so we said fries. The meal came without noodles and we were told that it only came with one side. Well, if the menu says it's served over noodles and that's supposed to be the side, don't ask me what side I want! Confirm I want noodles!!! Clearly the waitress didn't know the menu and nobody cared enough about customer service to "get it right". We asked for a sprite, they brought coke. We asked for no tomato on the club. It came with tomato. The waitress didn't offer to go boxes, nor did she bring us the check. We had to get it ourselves and then find her to pay. I don't need to ask for the manager and complain, I'm hoping this makes it clear. The cook can't cook. The waitress can't wait. Don't bring children here because the vulgarities are all audible. For years we have passed this restaurant and said "Gotta try that place". Today we went for lunch. Plenty of parking. We were greeted immediately. It's very old fashioned in all ways. Old fashioned decor and old fashioned friendly service. The Special of the day for Monday is an $11 burger. It was huge, juicy and charcoal broiled. Served with a generous helping of fries. Everyone at the other tables were getting the Irish Nachos which looked delicious. Next time we'll try that. This is a place we will definitely come back to. They post the fish of the day outside. The service was good and pretty quick, the food was good and served hot and reasonably priced. The ambiance was interesting but the table in the both was quite a bit higher than a normal table and the legs to the table almost blocked the ablilty to get your feet in under the table. My wife and I are senior citizens and had trouble getting seated and getting out because the table lets blocked the entrance way to the table. Several of the patrons seated in our area had the same problem. I would go back again. read more

Haven't been there in years so gave them a try. We were not disappointed. Good service even though they were short staffed. I had the Asian Tuna Salad and my husband had the pork chop, both meals were excellent. We will go back and order the same. I don't recommend the mixed drinks, stick with beer or wine. The only drawback is the stairs, there is no elevator. The stairs are steep and difficult for older people to manage. So I highly recommend the first floor. read more

My party stopped by for dinner after a matinee and we were starving. I have been here a couple times before but honestly prior visits were not a very good experience. We were warmly greeted and seated right away. Our server took our drink order right away and they were delivered promptly. I ordered the prime rib dinner with baked potato, ceasar, and clam chowder. Our entrees arrived in a reasonable time. The soup and salad were tasty but I found the potato tiny and worst of all the prime rib though tasty was very cold. My granddaughter and I came to eat a late lunch. The atmosphere was nice and we felt the staff was friendly. My granddaughter had a hamburger and she was very happy with it. I had fried clam basket which was cold. I feel like they were probably under staffed, due to the fact it took around 5 minutes to seat us. There were tables available. Great atmosphere, good food(some items better than others, but overall good), friendly people. and the rolls are incredible! Solidly mediocre experience, and I REALLY was looking forward to trying out Ashley's. My wife and I wanted to try something different in the area to support a local business and every time we pass this restaurant, it's consistently busy. It's an older building, and seemed dirty, and the mens room confirmed it. Broken plumbing, rundown, and the stench of urine was overpowering to the point you have to hold your breath. I stopped to wash my hands before the meal and questioned if they were any cleaner after being in that restroom. Our server took a while to find out table, took our drink order, and disappeared for a while. We ordered a couple of appetizers, the onion rings, and the Irish Nachos I believe they were called. Apps arrived in a timely manner, though the onion rings were clearly not handmade, and the nachos were a mess. The ratio of potato to toppings was about 2x what it needed to be. I could have had the Irish nachos and been full. The entrees arrived, my wife ordered the buffalo salad, which was so spicy she couldn't eat it. We took it home and never did eat it. I ordered the Mahi basket, in which the fries were good and crispy, but I found the fish to be dry and stringy. Overall, for an $80 meal after leaving a decent tip, I was incredibly disappointed for what was provided. I felt that the value wasn't there, and a $4 soft drink seems a bit much. I would have ordered a beer if i realized a soda was so expensive. It was a Sunday afternoon, and maybe we just hit it at a bad time. The bar was steadily busy, so maybe that's the draw here? Overpours and cheap drinking? I'm not sure. Our server seemed very uninterested in us, and wasn't around for much of our meal. I noticed about halfway through our meal, the never looked at us when she came by the table, or checked to see if we need anything. I got up to get my own refill at one point, and another time searching for a ketchup that wasn't empty at another table after giving up hope of seeing our server again anytime soon. Overall, meh. I finally had the opportunity to try Ashley's after years of driving past it on US-1. All I can say is: wow, I was really missing out! I ordered the Smokey Mountain Chicken (in honor of Smokey Mountain Wrestling) and it was grilled perfectly! When other places make this dish, it is 90% chicken and with few toppings. Here, it was balanced perfectly to allow the flavor to really come together. The chili and cole slaw were also great. Prices were much more reasonable than other comparable joints in the Rockledge area. Finally, is it haunted? Possibly. During dinner, all the food on my plate started to mysteriously disappear! Ashley's Of Rockledge - Rockledge - 0 Stars "Swill Alert" On July 18, 2018 the name Ashley's popped up on the random restaurant generator list. I momentarily remembered the few times I had been here previously. All of my prior memories were positive, though it has also been over 20 years since I last dined at this restaurant, which has been open over 60 years. What happened next was an encounter that will stain those memories as well as the history of this long-standing restaurant. As I stared down intently at my meal, my guts simmered with rage over how despicable and embarrassing the food I was served. I thought long and hard as I drove home about some way I could easily convey to my readers to stay away from food that is total slop. Food so bad a pig farmer would be scared to feed his animals. Like a bolt of lightning it came to me...."Swill Alert." You may be thinking to yourselves, "wait, there have been previous Swill Alerts. So how did you say come up with the idea of the Swill Alert now?" You are correct. On July 18th I was 90 days behind. Now, thankfully, that time lag has been cut to 45 days. So while I applied the idea retroactively, it was fomented here at this sad, pathetic excuse for a restaurant. My close friend, Andy, had been wanting to accompany me on a review. Things never lined up right until Ashley's. We talked, laughed, and truly enjoyed the company. However, once the food started coming, all the fun stopped. One constant I have noticed is that for some reason, the worst-rated establishments have the best servers and vice versa. However, breaking even this standard, our server Shelby was listless and uncaring. It was clear that she was just there punching a clock. When I encounter these sloth-like restaurant staff I always think back to the diner scene in "Reservoir Dogs" and start agreeing mentally with Mr. Pink. Andy wondered what her problem was. I replied, "I don't know, but usually when servers are incompetent, the food is really good." I ordered their "world famous" Prime Rib with red cabbage and a salad with blue cheese. The salad came out with ripped pieces of iceberg lettuce, two sad tomatoes, and a courtesy cut of purple onion. By this point I had decided I would no longer consume iceberg lettuce as it is the lines of least resistance to a restaurateur. However, I dipped a tomato into the dressing and noticed the Blue Cheese was nice. Then my prime rib showed up, and the conversation went something like this: Big Boy: What in the world has happened to it? Shelby: What? BB: This has been microwaved! Shelby: Yeah, to warm it up. BB: You have got to be kidding me. Shelby: So I guess you don't want it? Amazingly, she took it off the bill, but at this point, a manager came over and started to brow beat me over the Prime Rib. It was then that I revealed who I was and explained the wool over the eyes trick they must perform on people stops with me here. She turned and walked away in a huff. Andy and I trudged out to the muddy parking lot and decided to try again soon. This is an original, true "Swill Alert," being the genesis of this unfortunately growing category of restaurants. HORRIBLE. One of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had. The storied history is what brought us there. We were a party of 5. The restaurant only had around 15 guests when we arrived at 5:30PM. From the time we ordered to the time we received our meals was at least 30 minutes. Now for the food issues: The meals were supposed to be served with dinner rolls. The butter was placed on the table but the rolls never came out. Onion rings (appetizer): they forgot to put the order in and didn't arrive at the table until we reminded them when the main course came out. French Dip Sandwich: very bland and the au jus was served in a plastic to-go dipping bowl with the lid still on. The lid was partially melted and it burned my wife's hand when she removed the lid. My guess is it was microwaved. Mahi-mahi with baked potato and broccoli: DRIEST FISH I'VE EVER HAD. The fish was horrible and dry. Tasted like it was prepared 2 days ago and microwaved. The baked potato was so small and was served with a slice of cheese and bacon. The sour cream was served in a plastic to-go container. They forgot the broccoli and when they brought it out, it was dry and didn't look appetizing. I sent the meal back after a few bites and I didn't eat. Shrimp with baked potato and a side salad: the shrimp was average. The cocktail sauce was frozen and served in a plastic to-go bowl. The baked potato was the same as above. The salad was served with bleu-cheese dressing that was nothing more than mayonnaise with a few chunks of bleu-cheese. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. You could tell the chicken breast was a frozen and tasted freezer burnt, the cheese was dried and looked... not good, I peeled it off. The bun was burnt on the inside. My friends and I are paranormal enthusiasts, so when we found out that this was the most haunted restaurant in Florida we had to take a look. It was great that the restaurant embraced this, and had the history of the location listed on the back of the menu. The prices of this location were just as high as the kitchen staff. The location has a lot of character, but in order to get into the restaurant you have to walk past the kitchen. We didn't want to let this deter us as we had driven 45 min to experience the restaurant. Our server was polite but took very long to get our food as he was busy running back and forth for smoke breaks. The Irish Nachos were appetizing. Two members of the party ordered burgers, one requested well done the other requested medium well. The burgers came out and both were hockey pucks. It took the server about 10 min to get back to us in regard to the overcooked burger. They were kind enough to take it off the check as the other two members of the party were already completely finished eating by the time the burger was taken to be cooked again. The fries were hot and fresh. I ordered the BLT wrap, while it tasted good the wrap was very flat in comparison to normal wraps. We had to ask our server for a desert menu and he stated what was on the menu, none of which was on the actual menu. I understand things change but this was very frustrating.
